I am so so glad I made the decision to get my hair cut here! You won't regret it! A week ago I got a haircut from a different salon and left so unhappy with the result I was really scared to try another place, especially since I'm getting married later this year, but I knew I needed to get it fixed. I told Robert what I was upset about and what I wanted fixed and he listened to everything I said. He also really validated me by noting how uneven and choppy my previous cut was, but was still really respectful about it and didn't bash the other stylist which I think spoke a lot to his professionalism. During the cut, he communicated everything he was doing, even telling me the purpose of the products he was putting in my hair. I then left with a super cute blowout and felt so confident. The salon itself was also super nice. Everyone who works there is so kind and inviting. It's very clean and relaxed. I'm 100% certain I will be coming back. read more

Frizzy girls- listen up! I thank God that Marcos exists. I started going to him right after I got my first full-time job 12 years ago. Not only is he a sexy gay man but he's a genius when it comes to my frizzy mess. Back then, three of my friends commuted into NYC from NJ just to see him and they had three different types of hair. I had settled on getting my hair chopped by whoever for $35 and dealing with the "Oh, you're half black and half Japanese? That explains your hair" look from hairdressers all over the country. My friend convinced me that I should go because Marcos had done wonders with her hair (subtle highlights, cutting her thick straight Italian hair). Even after he had won me over with his personality, I still needed convincing and that's when Marcos pulled out the ultimate weapon...a picture of his own hair au naturale! I've been getting a wash, deep conditioner, a light texturizer on my hair, and a superb cut ever since. A marriage and a baby later, my friend is also still going to him :) Carlo Marco is a bit pricey for my pocket these days but for $200 (after tax and a 20% tip), I go every four months. What I love is the atmosphere and that my hair is cut to just above my neck but is still very girly and not boxy. He's very talented with those scissors - my hair still has shape even after four months... I've gone to Carlo, too, but Marco is my favorite. Doug and Carolina are awesome :) Appointments are recommended but they take walk-ins, too. If you want Marco or Carlo, definitely call ahead. If you go in winter, ask if Carlo has made his Mexican Cocoa - its a delicious indulgence and they give it to you free! Coffee, tea, and water are always on the house. Can you tell I'm devoted? Giovanni is the best hair stylist I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. And take this from a guy who went to 8 different people when first moving to New York b/c I was never satisfied with the job done. I finally found Giovanni about two years into my time in NYC and have been going to him religiously ever since. I refuse to get my haircut anywhere else and will travel back to New York regardless of where I am to do so. I've gotten one haircut outside of Giovanni in the past 6 years and boy was it a mistake. Before going to G I always had short to medium length hair. Based on his recommendation, I decided to try growing my hair out and am continuing to grow it even longer now. With Giovanni's careful craftmanship, I've NEVER had an awkward stage despite growing my hair from short to medium to long. Which I know seems almost impossible, but he finds a way. At this point, I don't even go in telling G what to do. I more so ask what he thinks I should do. Because I've gotten so many compliments and am so happy with the results since taking his advice. I cannot recommend Giovanni enough, especially if you have interest in growing your hair and/or beard out. He's an expert on that for sure. Nice place, nice people, fun cocktails and a convenient subway. Unfortunately, none of this makes up for how irritated I feel after getting a haircut here. I had very long hair, but it had some split ends and was getting heavier than I like. I came in and asked Carlo to take no more than three inches off the length and add some face framing layers. My hair is now no less than six inches shorter and in a practically blunt long bob. It's a very nice, even cut, but he ignored everything I asked for. My hair now falls only a couple inches past my shoulders. I think Carlo was even surprised by how short it was when it dried, though I warned him strongly about how much my hair shrinks up. I'm not thrilled. It will take me six months to regrow those 3 inches. I guess my salon phobia is back. read more

Recently started going to Carlo Marco Studio when Giovanni joined their staff. I'd followed him from his previous location and will follow him again if I have to! Though he specializes in color, he has always given GREAT men's haircuts. I've only ever gotten a cut, but I've seen the outcome on some of the ladies that have gone to him for a color job, and I mus say, they all always looked pretty amazing. The staff that I've met are fantastic as well, very professional yet friendly. Facilities are clean and well kept. Appointments are so well run, I rarely a long wait to get seen. I'd give more than five stars if it were possible! Highly recommend this place, particularly Giovanni for sure! read more

Beautiful setting, perfect location, cocktail Saturdays and a professional and friendly staff. I have been a client of Carlo for at least 14 years and have labeled him the "Messiah" of hair. I have never left the salon unhappy. Not only is he a extremely talented, he always listens to what style I want and/or will make a suggestion if I am unsure. My hair color is so gorgeous that I have actually been stopped on the street by strangers asking where I get my hair done! Oh I hate to tell you about them. You will all go and swamp the place and I won't be able to get in. I met Carlo years ago when I first moved to NYC. I had gone to Aveda and had my hair dyed with natural dye. Uh, there should never be anything natural about dye. My hair turned orange and that is when my friend suggested her hair stylist. Carlo fixed my hair color so it looked like it sprouted out of my head. He is an amazing colorist. Now I have turned all my friends on to him. Wow! What can I say about Carlo Marco Studio? I was recommended by a friend to get my haircut years ago, and I've gone every 3 weeks ever since. It's simply the best haircut for the money you'll find in NYC. They're all extremely friendly and genuinely care about their clients. Man! Are they professional. They spend hundreds of dollars to have their scissors sharpened (I didn't know that hair professionals did this). I'm always very pleased after a haircut there. Doug -- the receptionist-- is a gem. I must agree - Carlo is a genius. I've been going to him for years, and I get compliments from friends and *strangers* alike - about the cuts and when I finally caved and got highlights. Doug the reservations guy is as sweet as he can be. I've sent tons of friends there, and only one was disappointed (she didn't speak up when asked what she wanted). Carlo knows I want a low-maintenance cut and he delivers - never nudges me into something fancy that isn't me. Yet somehow I always look fab when he is done - AND the next day! Aside from his mad hair skills, Carlo is also somewhat reserved, so for those who don't want to chat endlessly about their personal lives, he is a gift from heaven. I feel fortunate that I found Giovanni...I am particular about my hair and I have to always be up on whatever trend is coming next -- Giovanni is one of those rare professionals who is great at both cut *and* color, and he knows how to work them together for best effect. Giovanni is a blonde's secret weapon! He saved my platinum hair which was so damaged from previous and not as knowledgeable colorists. After a few appointments he was able to breath life back back into my color as well as save the integrity of my hair. I have been going to Carlo Marco Studio for nearly 5 years now and could not image going anywhere else! Everyone that works there is incredibly friendly and each and every one of them contribute to making the salon the warm and welcoming environment that it is. I see Robert when I go there and always look forward to my appointments... and to see what there cocktail of the day will be! Which no matter what the drink is, trust me it is always delicious! Neighbors stop by to say hi as they walk their dogs (they keep dog treats behind the front desk) which makes me love them even more. They have become such a part of their neighborhood that you couldn't ask for a better experience at a salon in Manhattan where most places are impersonal and you just become another appointment. Robert knows my personality and hair so well that I am happy to say I walk away with perfection every time! I have dirty blond hair and he has found the ideal color for my highlights to get it to a lighter shade of blond without it actually looking fake and highlighted. It blends so naturally that I seriously don't think anyone will ever get it this great again! Safe to say as long as I live in NY you will find me going to Carlo Marco Studio! After growing my hair out for 5 months, I was desperate to have it shaped and cut to give it a much more even and manageable style. I had a wonderful stylist in the city, someone whom I had been loyal to for many years, but sadly he passed away. I went to Carlo Marco because I had walked by this salon in the West Village for many years and thought I would give them a try. I was pleasantly welcomed by the receptionist and treated to a blood orange mimosa on a Sunday afternoon--that in itself was a nice gesture. I explained to the gentleman who was going to cut my hair what I wanted done and made sure I explained it thoroughly. During the cut, there was very little interaction and I made attempts to make small talk--I don't like the uncomfortable silence and he was kind enough to engage me. Throughout the cutting process, I noticed that my hair kept getting shorter to which I mentioned it to him--but he assured me that he was layering it to give it some depth and volume. At some point, I mentioned I wanted the back a little shorter to compensate for the fact that it just kept getting shorter, and again he said it was fine. After the blow-out and style--to which I looked like a conservative, old business man, I am not by any means that old, I asked for some products and used the bathroom to closer inspect it--I was not happy but what can you really say when your hair is shorter than what you wanted, you can't really ask him to put it back! I clearly was unhappy but had to just let it be--he told me it would grow back! Mind you I spent 5 months growing my hair out from a buzz cut to a nice length. A few days go by and friends mentioned that one side was longer than the other--I went back to the salon and he was kind enough to "fix" one side, admitting that it was longer--there was no shampooing or even wetting the hair to see the differences in both sides--I found this method unsettling since I had product in my hair and it was styled. He sat me down and used a clipper to make the adjustments and after a few tousled moves, I was once again relieved, thinking my hair was fixed. Not so. I went to an event where I had a stylist do my hair for the show and sure enough she mentioned the uneven cut on the side he was supposed to have fixed! Now, in order for me to fix the cut, I have to cut the back, and both sides even shorter to compensate for the unevenness. I am not happy about this and this has only been 2 weeks since I had it cut! Salon prices are not cheap by any means and I even tipped him quite generously for the service. It's a nice enough salon, but its too small of a place to have way too much noise for the receptionist to be that loud while reading blogs aloud and the obnoxious laughter. So I give this place a 1 star for their effort but NEVER AGAIN. read more

I've been going to Marcos for 10 years, and my mother and sister have been going for longer. Even my former roommate is a client, so it was a no-brainer to go to Carlo Marco Studio with my bridesmaids on my wedding day. Everything was totally relaxed and fun (and on time!). We all left feeling gorgeous! Mala did our makeup beautifully. One bridesmaid - who's had makeup done for several weddings - said it's the first time that she has ever liked the outcome of her makeup being done professionally. And our hair looked awesome and stood up to some serious dancing, sweating, and A LOT of photos! I couldn't be happier! read more

Seriously the best Salon in NYC. I have been going to Marcos for about 20 years. I took a break for a while because I moved out of Manhattan. Now that I'm back my hair never looked or felt better! They only use top of the line products, make the best recommendations for styling and the atmosphere is warm and festive. Marcos not only does my hair but my children's hair too. He also has been cutting my husbands hair for years. When he's not available Robert can easily jump in and does an awesome job too. I literally feel like a super model when I leave and I can't forget to mention the fact that I may have enjoyed a nice glass of wine during my visit and definitely some great conversation. Prices are completely reasonable as far as NYC salons go. I love the fact that I can sit , relax and let the staff at Carlo Marco Studio work there magic without a single concern. My haircut at this salon a few months ago was not what I expected. The cut itself was very good- but for a boy, not for me (girl). For example, my hairdresser gave me sideburns that were square, rather than soft and wispy. I also asked him to keep my bangs, but he lopped them off. I'm not sure where the communication got lost. That said, I'd maybe be willing to give it a second chance since it did grow out nicely. I'd just advise anyone to be very clear about what you want. read more

Ai Nishiyama cut my hair in February 2015. I live in California but was visiting New York for a few months. A California friend told me that she flies to NYC to get Ai to do her hair, and after my haircut, and I can see why. Ai gave me the best haircut I've had since 1975 (and it was certainly as good as that one, which has been the template by which all others are judged). It still looks good, 4 months later, but I'll probably get it trimmed soon, just so the haircutter here can see what she did. Pay Ai whatever she asks and considerably more; she's worth it! read more
