If I could give this place negative ZERO stars I would. My friends and I came to this place after a long day of work and drinks. We purchased two pizzas and headed over to the pool table area where there was ONE person sitting in one of the booths. No one else.. we were a party of 9 and thought it would be easy to pull one of the tables closer to the pool table so we could all sit and eat, not thinking much of it. (Seeing that there was no one, except for that one person) who we shared a slice of our pizza with!! Well, the so called "owner" approached us in a very passive aggressive manner asking us to "move" away from the pool table that NO ONE using at the time. We were a bit confused on why he approached us the way he did. We didn't think much of it, considering that we were just waiting for our second pizza. He then comes back like 5 Mins later only this time he was actually rude. He then leaves and called security but by then we had already moved the table back to its place. He then goes back to the kitchen to grab our pizza, comes back and as he is handing over our pizza he tell us "you can go now, I can hear you talking shit and I don't like it.. so bye now" again... this is the "owner" talking. We were super confused at his reaction and why he was acting in such way. As we were walking out he started talking more shit to us and attached below is a clip of how he was acting. I came for the first time tonight and got to admit pizza was pretty good But after watching and hearing a employee kick out a group of people out for honestly no reason, I probably wont ever come back Its a very small place. Inside is about 2/3 tables. Ht there is a pool table. At the moment there was no one playing pool. Didn't like the pizza, but thought the calzone was pretty good! Also thought this place was pricey. Our total for two large pizzas, 2 sodas, and a calzone came out to 72 bucks (not including tip). Kind of steep for the quality. My biggest complaints about the pizza was the crust. It was super soggy. Some parts were beyond soggy and just simply wet. When the pizza gets like that even tossing it in the oven doesn't do much to rectify the undesirable texture of the crust. Ended up removing the onions from the pizza and feeding it to our dogs. Allow me to tell you why I think Carlo's in Downey deserves 4 stars - which is a very good rating IMO. My usual Friday lunch date with my daughter & best friend took place just before noon April 4, 2014. We were a little shocked by the area. I mean, it's not ghetto but it's not Downey Landing either. I grew up in a dirty old oilfield town, so this "scenery" doesn't deter me... not even the liquor store next door & the small, strange parking lot deterred me. We walked in and the place was completely empty. No sign of any workers. However, there is a blaring TV in the main seating area with the opening home game almost set to begin at Dodger Stadium. We hear a voice, but we weren't sure what was said. So, we just found a place to sit including a highchair for my baby girl, then a large man, now known to be Carlo, came out to turn the blaring TV down. He apologized for the loudness, but my daughter and I both were deck out in Dodger gear so it bothered us hardly at all. In fact, I appreciate business owners who support their local teams. Carlo proceeds to give us some laminated menus. We both ordered some Henry Weinhard root beer. Carlo said that they would be served with ice cold mugs. Sure enough, the root beers came out quickly. And not only were the mugs ice cold, but the root beer was cold as well. Nice touch. A couple of guys came in and ordered a pitcher of beer. The prices on pitchers of draft beer, by the way, are very affordable here! Then Carlo took our order. We both ordered calzones, but I opted for the three-topping calzone which was $8.99... meatball, jalapeno, and onion. You could also get a 1-topping or 2-topping calzone, but that's just boring. I wanted to order a salad, but refrained from doing so. Good thing I didn't because the calzones are huge. We did not wait longer than 10 minutes for our order to come out hot and fresh. The bottoms and edges were a little crispy and slightly burnt, but I didn't mind that at all. I only hoped for two things: that there was a little more sauce and the jalapenos were a little more spicy and flavorful. Otherwise, this was a hearty lunch meal for both of us. We took our time eating, then suddenly a few different small groups of people... all mostly Dodger fans! (By the way, I would only recommend groups of at most six people as the restaurant is fairly small.) During our meal, Carlo and another gentleman checked on us frequently. My friend and I both ended up taking some leftover calzones home. Normally I could probably eat one all by myself, but I'm currently almost 5 months pregnant and I tend to eat lots of small meals throughout the day. See the picture I posted of mine! While I am not sure how the service is when the place is packed, we sure appreciated the small hometown restaurant feel at Carlo's. All of the pictures hanging on the walls were a nice touch as well. The only real downside was the extra $1 charge for using a credit card when we paid out. Many places in the LA area tend to do this. It's sort of a drag to me. I can only recommend the calzone here as we did not try any of the baked pastas or pizzas, but there are also a few salads and sandwiches on the menu that I would like to try someday. Where do I begin? 1) Super pricey for less than mediocre pizza - $65 for two pizzas, a water bottle and a large drink. 2) HORRIBLE customer service! Let's start with the phone call. I called to make an order and I was put on hold for 10 minutes. I was able to hear everything, their conversations and other customer orders. At one point I thought they forget I was on hold. I order the pizza on a Friday night so I completely understand that they can be busy and take a while to deliver. The delivery took an hour and a half to arrive to my house. You judge if you think that's too long. For me it was. I can understand 45 minutes, but an hour and a half??? Lastly when I tried the pizza, it was absolutely not worth the wait. It wasn't cold but the taste was bad. Had a hankering one late night for work and found this place to be open fairly, your typical whole in the wall so I was excited about it. I ordered and went into the waiting area where there is a pool table and played a few games, got my pizza and it was pretty damn good..fwd a week later same scenario but this time there people playing so I moved towards a corner of the area to be out of the way when one player asked where I was going which I answered no where just moving out of the way. If you're looking for a late night pizza or a calzone this is the absolute best place! The owner Jeff is amazing at what he does. The pizza is the bomb and they even sell by the slice. My favorite would have to be the calzone though! I prefer it with pepperoni, sausage and mushroom. These calzones are pretty hefty with marinara and toppings on the inside and a garlic parmesan rub on the outside. Also pictured here is the ravioli(my girlfriends fav!). These 3 items are our go-to but you really can't go wrong with anything here. From the lasagna to the wings to the delicious sandwiches! I highly reccomend checking this place out if you're in town.
