    Food!
    Friday B.

We didn't know Carl's was cash-only before we went. Thank goodness we had cash! The whole store is pretty small, with around 20 seats total on two separate counters. It has a real old-timey lunch counter feel. The service was great! Our waitress was super sweet and attentive. The food was really good! I'd definitely come back if I was in STL. I'm a pretty picky eater and this satisfied me. The smashburger was great! Cooked well and not burnt at all. The fries weren't my favorite. They were okay but I think switching to a different brand or frying them in something else would be better and more flavorful; as it was, they were pretty bland and inoffensive. The coke was great too, with teeny tiny ice like all good diners have. The shake wasn't something I'd order again. We ordered chocolate and it tasted like milk with a little chocolate syrup thrown in. Onion rings were good too! A super fun stop! I'd come back!

Excellent smash burgers served in an old time belly up to the counter diner feeling establishment. The burgers are tasty and just the right size and priced very nicely at 6.50. I highly recommend the made fresh daily root beer. My lady Red, and I both enjoyed the onion rings. If you are hungry for a smash burger and in the Brentwood/rockhill area I would say stop in and enjoy.

If you have a hankering for a cheeseburger, fries and a root beer this is the place to go! Carl's has been around forever, so they have had time to prefect everything on the menu. First, know they only take cash. They do have a small ATM situation if you don't have cash. Second, there is only seating for 16 inside, split up on both sides. They have recently put out a couple picnic tables for extra seating. Third, no bathroom. Go before you go. Our family has enjoyed Carl's for generations. Walk in grab a barstool and take a load off. The menu is small but still hard to pick from because everything is delicious! Everything is cooked right in front of you fresh off the grill. I usually start off with a root beer in a cold frosty mug. They have been using the same recipe for years, It's so good! The kiddos love to enjoy a root beer float. Then order a cheeseburger with fries or onion rings. You have to wait a minute to eat when your food is served because it's that hot from the grill. The servers and cook work together like a well oiled machine to get orders out quickly. The small town 50s style diner vibe is such a nice change of scenery from big restaurants. I like to go during the.week after lunch time so it's not super busy. Just know it's worth the hype!

We have always loved Carl's! We had taken a break for a while and just visited again. I ate here a few times weekly when I was pregnant. All I craved was a root beer and burger. We brought my daughter and she loved sitting at the bar. A few things: It's cash only. There is an ATM machine inside that you can use. Bar space is limited. There's a bar with 7/8ish stools on either side of the grill area. It's an eat and run sort of spot. People are squeezing in between you to order and pay so don't go in a bad mood!

Carl's Drive In is a family staple of ours and has been for generations. My grandfather used to say "you'll never find a better burger". From the small quaint atmosphere, to the quick speed of the inside hustle, you can't go wrong when you need a classic smashed burger. It's cash only and the food is extremely reasonable. We always get the double cheeseburgers with everything (lettuce, onion, pickle, tomato, mustard and ketchup). You can get some additional toppings also if desired. We love the fries with cheese and the onion rings are delicious! The service is always quick and if you go enough, the same staff there to greet you and working their tails off to serve top notch burgers every single time! If you haven't been and live in St. Louis, it's a must!! Add it to your list, you won't be disappointed!

Service was great at both the counter and the table. I had the Split & Melt which was delicious. Crispy smash patties, gooey cheese, buttery bread. I also opted to add heirloom tomato to it which added a nice brightness to it. My mom ordered the double, which she said was amazing. We ordered a variety of sides to share. The mac and cheese was amazing, the onion rings were flavorful and crispy, and the fries were also very well seasoned and crispy. Overall, everything was a 10/10. Also, I loved that their fountain sodas are Excel sodas. Will definitely be back to try their draft beers and more burgers!

Price: All together, with a dollar tip, I paid $27 and change, which to me is incredibly pricey for counter service. $2 for a dipping sauce is steep, and for a small container. Next time? I'd skip the dipping sauce and homemade lemonade to save $7. I'll be back but not running to pay this much again. The storefront: the direct out front, small parking lot was packed and people were going into the gated lot to find parking. Only one person working the counter when you first walk in which lead to a long line at the dinner rush that seemed to be moving pretty slow. We got in before the rush and got our food quickly after. Staff were kind and very helpful! Fairly clean with the food runners circling tables often to remove trash.

For a small upcharge you can get a salad as a side, I like to do that because I can steal a few of the delicious fries from my companions. The salad is generous, spring mix, red onion, tomato, croutons. It comes with shaved parmesan, but I ask them to leave that off. The champagne vinaigrette is perfect. This is my favorite burger place, but I like that I can get a great chicken sandwich!

The CBGB fries are legit, loaded with grilled onions, chopped bacon, and a house-made beer cheese sauce featuring Busch beer. The deviled egg appetizer is another must. I'm not sure what kind of magic they use because the ingredients are very traditional. The worst aspect is the ventilation which needs much work. We came out smelling so greasy and smokey. We seated ourselves and waited a minute for our waitress to assist us. She kept saying she was new, that it was like her second day or something and didn't quite know the menu. She also didn't know how to make a drink, with that being the case why are you allowed to make any cocktails. If you have a limited cocktail menu but an extensive bar selection you would think their cocktail specials were on point. Nooooo. The BF tried a margarita special and it was awful. I tried a special crafted cocktail that was cool that our waitress asked the guy bartending to specially make because she had no clue about what I was talking about. I hate going to a spot where I make drinks better than the bartenders on hand and that's your job. The BF ordered the the garlic burger and I ordered the Korean wings which NEVER came out because our waitress forgot to order them. So I shared food with the BF. The burger was extremely underwhelming, not seasoned at all. How do you specialize in burgers and mess that up. The best item we ate was the fries and the comedy show was good. I love dinner and entertainment. We are burger enthusiast and if this what your restaurant specializes in I expect to be wowed. We saw all the social media hype surrounding this place and were so excited to try them. To find out it was ALL just hype is a real let down. A guy from my running group asked me which way it was, and I was like, "Uh, I think it's that way." A few places on this strip all have similar awnings. I thought I was lucky finding such a good spot. By the time I was done with my run, maybe an hour later, all of Clayton was an absolute ghost town. It makes me wonder what they'd have to put here to get people to visit Clayton during the evening, a 7 Brew? Inside is more along the lines of a bar, with a number of beers on tap and decor that may have been purchased from a Kohl's. I appreciated the way they had the beers on tap written on the wall in ginormous fonts, and I'm sure the elderly are similarly appreciative. Sometimes you ask these waiters what beers they have on tap and they act like they're doing you a favor by listing them. I asked this hillbilly they've got waiting tables at the Syberg's over on Dorsett what beers they have on tap, and he just said they have 30 of them. Uh, thanks? I wonder if he counted them. I went with the 4 Hands Incarnation, which I have at least once a week, because I get it for free. It seemed less "high gravity" than it does when you get it in the tall cans.Hmm... Usually, my move at these burger places is to order a bacon cheeseburger or a specialty burger that has bacon on it. 5 Star had such a burger listed first on their menu, making my choice easy enough. I toyed with the idea of ordering the Green Chile Cheeseburger, but not seriously. I wasn't sure what the green chiles would taste like, and what if they turned out to be gross? The Blue Ribbon Burger comes with bacon, port-braised onions and Gorgonzola cheese, along with LTOP. No, that's not a typo. You get thinly sliced red onions in addition to the port-braised onions. It feels weirdly generous of them, even though they're just onions, and all the fresh toppings are of a seemingly high quality. I was more ambivalent about the toppings specific to the Blue Ribbon Burger. I didn't dislike them, but I was less impressed by them than I would have expected. The bacon was good, but it was in crumbles and I think I would have liked it more if it were in thick, crispy strips. No Diddy. The cheese was either not flavorful enough or in not abundant enough quantity to be much of a factor. The onions, on the other hand, provided a nice flavor kick--less tart than I expected, more along the lines of the onions in a french onion soup. The fries were kinda whatever. They were good, being french fries and all, but not as gourmet as the menu would have you think. And they don't give you very many of them, if you get the regular serving. Weirdly, the regular serving doesn't cost much money, by Brandon-era standards, but the serving-size is decidedly skimpy. Why not just charge a normal amount and give you a normal quantity? Even the large won't exactly break the bank. I went with the small because I just wanted to see what they were like, for the sake of citizen food journalism. You're welcome.
