Regular Chicken Katsu Sando and Regular Chicken Katsu Rice Bowl and Sprite can
    Canada R.

My brother and I stopped in here for lunch and it was a great experience! The restaurant is clean, and the cashier was very friendly. I had been once before, but it was my brother's first time and he enjoyed his bowl! I got the regular sandwich with curry fries, which tasted excellent with a little cup of dipping sauce they now pair it with. The sandwich is so yummy! The sandwich and fries pair well with a crisp can of Sprite. Everything was very fresh, and well worth the 10 minute wait. Can't wait to go back and try more menu items!

Highly anticipated spot for me... I was really really counting on some authentic Japanese food after visiting Japan earlier this year. Mostly I wanted the soft bread.. so I was slightly disappointed when we got our sandwiches and they appeared relatively average American looking sandwiches. There are rice bowls also available. The flavor was very good and was satisfied with the meal overall, but just not the caliber we found in Japan. They always seem to be busy which makes Me happy, I'm glad they are finding success. they are in a perfect spot right on the corner. Overall, glad they are there! Excited to try again.. atmosphere was bustling !

We were in the area and walk around the neighborhood and saw this place. This was our first time going here. The food was good. The cheeseballs were unique with curry flavor and quite enough cheese. The fries have good seasoning. The staff were fast and helpful. If you are in the area, give them a try.

Sandwich was good, nice, rich flavor! Tried the fries with Japanese curry sauce- fries were awesome. I ordered the teriyaki tofu rice bowl which was also solid, tofu could have been crispier, but that's a personal preference ! Service was very friendly. Street parking. Order at counter and eat in dining area. Meal took about 15 minutes to come out which they told us about prior. Overall good experience!

Went here for lunch on Saturday afternoon with a friend. I have tried to go before but it's been closed for various reasons. Ordered the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Katsu Sando with curry fries. Sandwich was a good size and flavorful but I didn't really get a lot of sweet and spicy flavor from it. I really enjoyed the curry fries and the dipping sauce with them. The location is pretty large and has plenty of seating. Sandwich took a while to come out, but was hot. Service was friendly. I would love to go back and try a rice bowl.

First time in their brick-and-mortar location in Maplewood. I parked around back but there is street parking in front if you happen to snag it. The set up was similar to the business that was there prior, but it was well laid out and decorated with some great murals and such. Order at the counter where the staff is ready to answer any questions. I had tried the chicken katsu sandwich from the food truck so I decided on a bowl this time. The Pork Katsu rice bowl described as Pork Katsu, house made cabbage slaw, cucumbers, pickled ginger, over white rice. My order came up pretty quickly, and I sat at a table to sample. the bowl came with a sticky sweet sauce on the side. I enjoyed the bowl ingredients minus the sauce. I was skeptical about the slaw and the rice but the combined bite was delicious! The portion was generous with lots of pork katsu slices. Lots of people had the sandwich and seemed to be enjoying it but I might continue getting the bowl. The staff was friendly and helpful, food quick and delicious, the only small issue I had was the plastic fork wasn't the sturdiest to use on the rice. I would go back again, for sure

Loved the food truck and was happy to try the new location. Chicken is delicious as always and very filling. Staff was friendly and the cashier went through everything they had and answered all of our questions. Clean establishment and is a great choice for a quick lunch. Will certainly head back next time I am craving some katsu chicken.

We stopped for a lunch at this new location and really enjoyed our experience! I hadn't ever gone to their old location, but this one was very spacious with adequate seating. For lunch, it was quite busy work people steadily filling up chairs as they emptied. We ordered a few items from the counter and grabbed a seat. To start, we did the sweet chili wings and cucumber salad. The sweet chili wings were deliciously sticky, perfect amount of heat and spice. The cucumber salad was crisp and refreshing! For our mains, we did the chicken karage sando and the pie tonkatsu sando. Personally, I LOVED the pork. It was juice and crunchy. The slaw on the sando really helped to cut down on the heavy fried taste. The fries we got with the spicy togarashi seasoning, which was fantastic with the cook of the fries. A light spice flavor without being overbearing or too salty.

I was anxiously awaiting getting to try them in Maplewood, and it was worth the wait! The chicken on my sandwich was crispy and juicy, the toppings added a nice crunch too. I got the curry seasoned fries, but couldn't really notice any huge flavor difference. Overall though, it was a stellar meal! The staff was super friendly for how busy they have been - and how busy they were when we went at 6:30 on a Thursday. I got the matcha ice cream for desert (they partner with Sugarwich!) and my friend got a taiyaki. We are used to places serving taiyaki warm, but this one was not. She still said it was tasty though, and filled with plenty of Nutella!

Love Sandos new location! So much bigger than the tiny spot they had before! The decor is still the same but there's so much light! Service was fast even during busy lunch hour. I got the classic sando and it was delicious and had to save some for later! Love their sauce and toppings! The curry fries is a bit sweet. They have ice cream and taiyaki now so next time I have to try that!

Stopped in for lunch around noon on a Sunday and it was already quite busy! Despite how busy it was the food was very quick to arrive! I tried the chicken karaage sandwich with fries and the star of the show was definitely the chicken! Specifically the breading, it was fried perfectly very light, not too oily and seasoned perfectly! The slaw was a refreshing touch as well. The sandwich was a little hard to eat as it can get quite messy but it was delicious. The fries are crunchy but nothing extraordinary. Overall the service was great and speedy. There were a decent amount of seats and a little corner with games. By the time I left every table was taken but I will definitely be coming back for that chicken again!

New location of the Sando Shack has opened in Maplewood right on Manchester Ave, so really easy to get to with ample street parking and lot parking in the rear. The place was really clean and had a pretty good amount of seating. The menu is pretty simple just a few sandwiches and a few bowl options (both same topping just sandwiches or rice bowl). They also have a few Japanese ice cream options (they look like little fish!). I got the basic chicken Sando with fries (there are three options: salt, or two spicier ones - I'm boring so just regular for me). The chicken Sando had a good crispiness to it and the bread was toasted perfectly. The slaw and the sauce was a little underwhelming to me. Service was good, nothing exceptional but staff was kind, and answered my questions with ease. Food came out relatively fast.

Went here with my sister and had a great time devouring this meal. I also had the taiyaki Nutella which was alright... overall will go back someday to try other menu items!

While I've yet to go to Japan, it def gives off the vibe strictly from ambiance and the decor. It's small but intimate and offers seats at the "bar", as well as communal seating. We didn't get a choice and were sat at the bar. Ordering is done through the QR code and water is offered self-serve. We split an order of the appetizers: house cucumbers and karaage. I'm not a huge cucumber fan but I tried it. I preferred the one with miso as I found it to be more subtle in taste. The chicken was average and didn't wow me. We each got the chicken shoyu with no pork, no scallions and an extra egg. It felt like it took a long time to get our food. We were both surprised once we got it as we were expecting actual chicken pieces but after rereading the menu description, it was chicken oil. He was a bit disappointed as both our dishes were covered in scallions. I suggested we not send it back since it took quite a while to get our food and they were close to closing. Nevertheless, I found the broth to be tasty and full of flavor despite there being no meat. Overall, it was a solid first visit.

Some rolls are half off and so are a few beverages, like hot sake. I had never had hot sake. I've only had any sake once. I liked it fine, but I didn't want a second order after I finished the first. I was disappointed that Robata was out of plum wine. Instead I ordered what was described as a white sangria, but it tasted more like a brandy. I had a few sips and gave it to my friend. I had 4 vegetarian sushi rolls. Only the asparagus was included with happy hour. My 3 other rolls were takuan, pickle plum and BB. As much as I like plum (keep reading), and takuan was a pleasant surprise, and the asparagus was good, the BB, which has tempura asparagus, cream cheese, and sweet soy, was my favorite item of the evening. I was happy to see umeboshi onigiri on the lengthy menu. These were of a good size, but I think it perhaps would have benefitted from a higher pickled plum to rice ratio. (The only time I've had it has been from a food truck and I don't know how representative it is of onigiri.) Each order of food took a while to come out. My friend had trouble getting the server's attention when she wanted to put in more orders. Robata is not a place for a quick happy hour bite. It's going to take a while, especially if you're ordering in multiple rounds like we did. When the kitchen got too busy, my order another roll was denied. That happened well before dinner service ended and it was disappointing. I would have waited a bit longer. But it was probably good to get cut off from sushi at some point. We were a little confused by the bills. My friend may have overpaid (not gotten happy hour price) for some of her items, and there was some question about whether mine had been billed correctly, but in the end we decided that mine was probably correct. Hers, though... we aren't sure. I think I'll return to Robata for the BB roll, plum wine, and maybe something new, but I will be sure to have plenty of time, order a bunch all at once, and check the bill.

The heat was out? Which the waitress apologized for. They had a space heater out, so we sat right by that. I also ordered a few of the onigiri to go. They aren't the best I've had, but I'll probably be back semi-regularly to get my fix of the flavor, which is just so unique. Same for half off mackerel Maybe one day I'll even try their non-sushi offerings...

The shrimp come tail on, which is fine, but one of them had sand in it, I'm not sure from what, but they definitely were not thoroughly cleaned. The flavor was flat and yet the Pad Thai was overly saucy. I saw people saying this restaurant it is authentic, speaking highly of the food, but they must be comparing it to other Thai-American spots because I just don't see it at least from the Pad Thai. Pad Thai should ideally have subtle cooked down flavors of tamarind and fish sauce, some complex sweetness from palm sugar, and subtle dried shrimp flavor as well. But here the flavor just was bland and uninteresting. Some redeeming qualities are that they had some dried shrimp on top, which is very rare in the US even in larger cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle; the rice noodles themselves were cooked well (not over or undercooked); the bean sprouts looked fresh and clean; and the peanuts, chili powder, and lime coming separately was appreciated. I am do not believe in basing ratings on service and generally don't comment on service, but it wasn't great.
