When we walked in, we saw the traditional Japanese artwork with their logo. The floors were very clean and mopped as well. The staff were very quick on making our order, as well as being very attentive and quick taking our order. The owner was quick on making my friend's matcha ice cream. I ordered a Taiyaki and Katsu Bowl. The Katsu Bowl's serving size was very plentiful, and the Taiyaki was very good with the red bean paste, even it sounded disgusting to me since I do not like baked beans. Very cool spot in Maplewood to add another option of food to their already diverse shopping strip! Bf and I stopped in right when the snow started and got almost the entire place to ourselves. Clean restrooms and friendly staff, very important to me and this place has both! Owner or manager greeted us upon arrival and asked if we had been in before or needed any suggestions from the menu. I asked about the ice cream choices and considered saving room despite the cold outside...but sadly missed out and didn't get any at the end. Bf got the regular chicken katsu bowl and I went with the pork tonkatsu sando. Similar flavors but just depends on if you like using your hands or working with a fork. Finally get to try the brick and mortar location of Sando Shack. The last time I had their Sando was so long ago. Their Maplewood location was big and spacious. I really liked the decor and the cool vibe. We ordered the spicy chicken katsu Sando and it was delicious. The meat was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The Sando came with the side of fries. We got the togarashi fries and they were so addicting. Fries were not as crispy but very well seasoned and went perfect with the aioli sauce. We also tried the pork katsu rice bowl. I didn't like the sauce as much as the chicken Sando but it was still pretty good. I liked that the rice was well-cooked. You must try their ice cream. I would have come just for it alone. They have a good variety of flavors. My favorite was the miso taro and the yuzu caramel. The staff were very nice to us and the food came out quick. My brother and I stopped in here for lunch and it was a great experience! The restaurant is clean, and the cashier was very friendly. I had been once before, but it was my brother's first time and he enjoyed his bowl! I got the regular sandwich with curry fries, which tasted excellent with a little cup of dipping sauce they now pair it with. The sandwich is so yummy! Highly anticipated spot for me... I was really really counting on some authentic Japanese food after visiting Japan earlier this year. Mostly I wanted the soft bread.. so I was slightly disappointed when we got our sandwiches and they appeared relatively average American looking sandwiches. There are rice bowls also available. Went here for lunch on Saturday afternoon with a friend. I have tried to go before but it's been closed for various reasons. Ordered the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Katsu Sando with curry fries. Sandwich was a good size and flavorful but I didn't really get a lot of sweet and spicy flavor from it. I really enjoyed the curry fries and the dipping sauce with them. The Pork Katsu rice bowl described as Pork Katsu, house made cabbage slaw, cucumbers, pickled ginger, over white rice. My order came up pretty quickly, and I sat at a table to sample. the bowl came with a sticky sweet sauce on the side. I enjoyed the bowl ingredients minus the sauce. I was skeptical about the slaw and the rice but the combined bite was delicious! The portion was generous with lots of pork katsu slices. Lots of people had the sandwich and seemed to be enjoying it but I might continue getting the bowl. For lunch, it was quite busy work people steadily filling up chairs as they emptied. We ordered a few items from the counter and grabbed a seat. To start, we did the sweet chili wings and cucumber salad. The sweet chili wings were deliciously sticky, perfect amount of heat and spice. The cucumber salad was crisp and refreshing! For our mains, we did the chicken karage sando and the pie tonkatsu sando. Personally, I LOVED the pork. It was juice and crunchy. Stopped in for lunch around noon on a Sunday and it was already quite busy! Despite how busy it was the food was very quick to arrive! I tried the chicken karaage sandwich with fries and the star of the show was definitely the chicken! Specifically the breading, it was fried perfectly very light, not too oily and seasoned perfectly! They also have a few Japanese ice cream options (they look like little fish!). I got the basic chicken Sando with fries (there are three options: salt, or two spicier ones - I'm boring so just regular for me). The chicken Sando had a good crispiness to it and the bread was toasted perfectly. The slaw and the sauce was a little underwhelming to me. I've been wanting to check out their brick and mortar, but hadn't found the time - glad to finally make it work! I placed an order online and was easily able to pick it up. I love that the sandwiches come with a side of fries! I got the tofu rice bowl and my husband got the pork katsu with the curry fries. We also got the egg salad sandwich with the spicy fries. The food was still warm and relatively crispy when we got home. The seasoning on each of the fries were delicious! The tofu bowl didn't really have a ton of flavor, the pieces of bok choy had surprising and sporadic heat, would have loved more throughout the dish. The ice cream flavors sounded great though I wasn't able to try any. Maybe a ten minute wait for the food to come out but it was piping hot and tasted amazing. Cozy shop in tower grove! My friend and I went just as they opened so we were serviced quickly. I ordered the regular chicken katsu sando and opted for fries with sea salt. There were three different variations of fries you could order. You can't really tell from the photo, I was starving so I inhaled half of that bad boy. I visited the Japanese Garden at MBG today. So I felt like continuing the international staycation and went to the Sando Shack for food as 1st time visitor. I saw Japanese style sandwiches on Yelp and thought, I'll try it. I'm so glad I did! The entrance is sandwiched (haha!) in between several businesses - look for the bright red sign. There is a lot of street parking all around the block. You may just need to circle once or so to find a spot - or walk a block. Once inside you'll see it's a small shop with only a few seats along the storefront windows and the counter to order. I got the Pork Tonkatsu sandwich with Togarashi fries. Sando and fries both had amazing crunch and lots of flavor. The slaw on the sandwich complimented the sauce on the pork, and the bread was nice and toasty. I really enjoyed the meal! But friends, gather in close and listen up... forget regular fries with sea salt and get the Togarashi fries - they were awesome! Seriously. That spice blend is genius on fries and so good with the pork sandwich! I did wait for about 10-12 minutes for food, and there was only one family of three ahead of me. Finally made it to Sando Shack at their new brick and mortar location on Morgan Ford, which is a up and coming little area! You are able to eat inside or in the adjoining bars on either side of the restaurant. I ordered the sweet & spicy chicken katsu sando which is a chicken thigh breaded in panko crumbs, deep fried, topped with cabbage slaw, sweet and spicy chili sauce, on a buttered toasted bread. The first bite was DELICIOUS, however as I ate on, it started to lose it's flavor and I don't know why. The ride wasn't as good as expected at the end. I was down the street at Dobbs and needed to kill some time. I've been wanting to try this place forever. You order at the counter and sit down and they call your name. I got the sweet and spicy chicken sandwish with the spicy fries. Everything was AMAZING. The chicken was crispy and the fries were fantastic too.
