Came here to paddle board on a Saturday afternoon. I have gone stand up paddling many times before and I would not recommend trying it here. It was tough to paddle back because of the currents and the jet ski area made it pretty choppy at times. My friends and I came here last weekend for the beginning of a bachelor/bachelorette party weekend. We were unable to find a place to sit, relax and eat because the area was small and there were lots of people on top of that. The afternoon however was salvaged by tubing. We had an hour of tubing reserved and we had a great time! The lake was definitely not the cleanest body of water, however, after an hour of tubing, part of me didn't care. In a nutshell, the beach is better if you're looking to have eat with a large group of people, tubing was super fun, water is definitely not clean. I had my first experience with stand-up paddle boarding at the Carlsbad Lagoon. The experience overall was fantastic. I went with a group of 9 people and we all purchased our tickets either on Groupon or Amazon Local, for $24 a person. After we checked in, we received our boards and some simple instructions from the staff. Not a lot of wait-time, so that was awesome. I would give the staff a 9/10 (I didn't find the female processing our paperwork to be too friendly - she seemed bored or indifferent, but the rest of the staff was really nice). The lagoon is a lot bigger than I thought and the jet-skiers/boaters were separated from the rest of the activities, so it was pretty safe. I even saw fish jumping out of the water the further out I went. Had I had a net, I would have caught dinner! (A girl can dream!) I would say that the only thing that made me give them a 4/5 stars would be the conditions of their restroom. No toilet paper, no seat covers...it was pretty nasty, like "Oh, it's like going camping and digging your own hole" nasty. But, overall experience was good. read more

My cousins and I wanted to go kayaking and found this awesome deal on Travelzoo for kayak rentals ($23 for 2 hours). I had originally chosen a Travelzoo deal in La Jolla, but this place had no minimum age requirement (the place in La Jolla, kids had to be at least 6 y.o.) I have a 3 year old, and at this place, she could join us in the fun. Staff was very friendly from the get-go. Everyone kindly directed us to the waivers and the guys who set up our kayaks and aqua cycles did so quickly and helped set us off. The aqua cycle, though not necessarily hard, does NOT move quickly. Half of our group (12 ppl total) had the cycles while the other half breezed by them on the kayaks. When we asked if we could switch our aqua cycles out with kayaks (we came back after 30 minutes, our quads were killing us), the main guy originally said no, but then changed his mind and said we could trade one cycle for the kayak. Good enough for us! The day was perfect, the waves were light (my cousin also didn't want La Jolla cuz the waves might be too harsh), and the staff was friendly. I saw some people on jetskis around, but if it were me, I wouldn't rent jetskis here. The lagoon is big enough for a kayak or paddleboard, but I imagine people on a jet ski or boat might bore of the small space rather quickly. All in all--a fun day activity, and a great price with the travelzoo deal. Minus one star, because I'd have to agree with a previous reviewer, the views aren't that exciting (the view to the west is a small slope and then the Interstate, the view to the east are nice houses. I have to start by saying that as a San Diego local I'm well aware of how privileged I am to experience the beauty of our community nature everyday. That being said, nothing beats the beauty and convenience of this little gem. You pull up to a gorgeous view, park right on the shore (if you don't get there early enough theres a ridiculous amount of parking up the hill) walk barefoot in the dirt to the office, get a rental, and then enjoy a serene aqua- meditation for the next hour. The staff is friendly, the customers are happy, and everything is clean. Now onto the best part... the man candy. Go find staff member Joe and ask him to flex for you... your afternoon will be complete. Recently went to the Lagoon with my sister and our best friend visiting from Colorado. My sister and I have been to the Lagoon multiple times throughout summers past but this would be our friend's first time here and first time on a jet ski!! Braden D was absolutely amazing!! He made sure our friend felt comfortable and understood how to use the jet ski. When we first arrived for our jet ski rental he was really busy, getting a group of 4 ready for their jet skis and helping unload a trailer of other jet skis which would be ours. AWESOME, we went for an event so we could use all their equipment... I spent most of the time jetskiing. There was plenty of room for everyone. The center of the lagoon was set aside for the jet ski's with a large wake zone for paddle boards and aqua cycles. A mother & infant child were out & didnt seem bothered by the wake. They have kayaks & wake boarding as well. The lagoon is bigger than it seems & there is a ton of space to enjoy. The shop is professionally run and safety seems a top priority... so are the rules. They had to ask someone to leave the lake after reminding them of tbe wake zone. But all went well. They offered him a paddle board instead of a jet ski. We will be back. First time here and we from out of state... Customer service inside the store/ reservation area was awful. Three girls in there and no one turned a head when we walked in and stood in front of them for assistance. All on their phone and one was even sitting on the display table. They continued time on their phone, story talking, etc. and then helped us. Besides that, lake side assistance was amazing and all the men helping were so kind. We rented a water tricycle and everything was great on the water. We reserved time and activity ahead of time as well as paid, super easy. The 3 is only for the service. We saw this place from the freeway as we we r driving to our timeshare in Escondido. While looking at reviews and pictures, I saw a toddler on a raft being pulled by a boat! I thought...ooooowww looks so fun for my kiddos! They are 3 and 5. We ended up renting wave runner and a boat with two drivers. JOSHUA and GARIN, they were so fun and had the best attitude! Helpful and shared tips, felt like family was guiding us. We ended up using a coach floaty thing and a huge round hockey puck thing. We got pulled and we're able to sit with the kids.They even went by themselves. We went for an hour for 155 and they supply everything b you need! We will definitely be back. An awesome spot!!! We went on a Thursday afternoon and it was perfect! Crowd was not bad at all. Plenty to do. Tubing Wake boarding Paddle boarding Aqua cycles Jet skiing Canoe / kayak I've never rented a boat before but $155/hr was good for us. If it was cheaper that would hVe been gr8 too but it wasn't lol!! Plus u got to do what u wanted in the time u got. So we did an hour wake boarding & hour tubing. Had a blast!! Our driver was Austin!! Hella cool and the boat has Bluetooth so u can play ur music he did awesome with us and very patient & encouraging. 2 adults 3 teens & 3 kids.. They provided life jackets for all activities so double ! Ping pong Basketball Volleyball Big floating mat for kids (in the water) ** set up and free to use on the grounds** Benches, chairs, and little tiki umbrellas on the shore for sitting and there were 2 decks that had the EZ up and bbq capability ( u might have to reserve those.. Not sure) Parking: different levels. 1 level right on the grounds near the water and then 2-3 levels up above that required a lil hike ( not far at all) Bathrooms were huge and clean. They also had a lil shop that had: Cell phone water protection packs Slippers Sunglasses Water/snacks Water shoes Etc.. Also... Groupon was available for certain activities.. I came here with a friend yesterday and it was our first time to be here and also doing paddle boarding. Very nice and peaceful lagoon, not too crowded. Staff are friendly and helpful. We had our picnic by the lagoon but we forgot to bring plates and forks. The staff were very kind and gave us plates/forks/cups. This place is amazing I brought a group of students from Los Angeles and it's a great fantastic place firstly it's cool it is closer than San Diego but I must be the most impressive part about it is that so many choices of different water activities to enjoy and the staff are all young and friendly and kind. I brought a group of students with our nonprofit organization and when the location heard what we do then the general manager Josh went beyond to accommodate us and to help make our trips a great success. we had a great driver with a very clean and new boat, for over an hour with a tube attached to it. The driver was so patient when each student fell off the tube, the driver stopped, put in the back on the boat and continuing. this place is great, the lake is not a beach where there are millions of other boats it's private, the showers are brand new the toilets are spotlessly clean and with lots of parking. it also has a great picnic area with the view of the water and I must say even without the boats the kids enjoyed just hanging around in the water which is nice and shallow Can't wait to come back read more

Well, we're excited to go and paddle board. Staff was friendly, however probably not aware of weather conditions for the city slicker coming to do the abnormal for them. We did an hour paddle board for the family if four (14 and 12). Wind was an advisory warning which didn't seem to strong, but once we got out and had to paddle back it took us two hours and my daughter had to have me push her back along with my board. After 2:45 minutes my son made it back and had to tell them to send out a jet ski to get us. I got back with two feet swollen and bloody with cuts trying to drag her back. Have been paddle boarding on the Lagoon twice now, it's been so much fun! I feel so lucky to be able to live in Carlsbad and have access to something like this! The main drawback is that there is a ton of traffic on the water (other SUP's, kayakers, boats, rafts, etc.) on the weekends and that's the only time I can make it out. The other thing that isn't awesome is that it's right by I-5 so I'm sure you can imagine the pollution we're swimming in :( Still a beautiful place where you can kayak all the way back to see crabs and other marine marine life (furthest from the 5 fwy)! read more

My hubby and I wanted to go boat paddling and found this awesome deal on AmazonLocal for $23 for 2 hours (original price: $20/hr). We got our paddling boat, which was hard to control. After 1/2 hour, our boat was still circling at the same spot. A lot of water got in our boat, and it was up to the point almost sinking. Thank God we're right next to the pier and asked for help. We got their attending and someone came to help us immediately. We requested to change to aqua cycling, and they okayed us. What a pleasant day, warm weather, cool water, what a blast. Decided I wanted to go SUPing for my birthday so a few friends and I bought a groupon and headed out. I had never been to the lagoon before but knew about the rentals, I decided to pick here over the harbor because I wanted to avoid boats. Check in went smoothly the girls at the front office were helpful. We headed out to get going. The guys at the launching point were very laid back and seemed a little unorganized when it came to multiple parties trying to head out at one time. We ended up spending some time standing around before anyone helped us because of this. Same thing when we came back, there really wasn't much organization with who do we check in with and say we are back to? To be honest since they don't have any identifiers we weren't really sure who was even working or just there for fun. Their attitude wasn't off putting or anything just typical teenager probably rather be on the water than working. All seemed nice though. The groupon gave us $27 for two hours of paddle boarding and it really was a great deal. We started at 11am on a Saturday and there wasn't many people on the water. It definitely got busier and more crowded as we came back in. I wasn't confident enough to stand on our way back in because the boats and jet skies where causing waves that ended up knocking one of my friends who's been multiple times into the water (but seriously who cares it's a water sport not a sit on water and stay dry sport) Once we had paddled out past the boat area of the lagoon though it was a really relaxing day :) I've found a new hobby and will definitely be back for more read more

This is probably the worst experience I have ever had at a business. We spent over $200 to drive wave runners in a tiny circle. The whole time another man kept cutting me off or making the wakes completely unmanageable to navigate. The water was really difficult to ride in and made the whole experience awful. Once we finished no one was there to help guide the wave runners to the beach. It gets worse. They asked for our ID and credit card when we checked in and they never gave it back. We called, left voicemails, left Facebook comments and messages and still have not heard back from them. We missed our train back and had to book a hotel just to stay nearby until someone at the business decides to give us our credit card and drivers license back. To make matters worse, they had our phone numbers on file and email. No one even called us to let us know they still had our credit card and ID. This ruined my birthday and I hope someone at your business will contact my husband or me. We have family right now waiting from out of town in Los Angeles for a birthday brunch. We wont be able to see them and will have to cancel because of this negligence. We are at a hotel nearby and awaiting your call. read more

It was incredibly fun! It was my first time jet skiing, and the lagoon was definitely the best choice (versus open ocean). It was enclosed and quiet. The only waves created were the ones from the jet skis. Cost was very reasonable, and the instructors very helpful. I recommend renting the full hour as it is only about $20 difference. For first timers with average upper-body strength, I would also suggest pairing up with someone if you are renting the jet ski for a full hour. You can switch with your partner at any point! read more

Best thing to do in North County!! I went down with a bunch of buddies and we rented some stand up paddle boards and we had a blast. The girls at the office suggested we do 2 hours and they were right! We spent like 30 minutes in the back of the lagoon checking out the beaches and the jumping fish!! Our first time at the Lagoon and we found it to be quite fun on a kayak exploring the perimeter. Easily accessible and gave us a chance to see a part of Carlsbad we've never seen before. If you go during high tide, you might catch a glimpse of the Bat Ray breeding grounds at the far end! We got stuck at low tide near this area and hit a Bat Ray so do realize that the marsh area gets very shallow really quick. Our next time there will be to try some paddle boarding and the theres a couple of outfits on the north end that will rent you the equipment. read more

Bought some Groupon deals for the rentals of paddle boards and kayaks. We went with my husband and teen son. Rentals were for two hours, enough time to paddle to the end of the lagoon and back twice. The water was calm, so I never fell off my board, I'll try open water stand up next time. The boys, well that's a different story, they kept fall down...perhaps the wakes from the jet skiers? My spot for kayak fishing, even though the fishing is so/so they have pulled out some huge Halibut out of there. Plenty of places to toss out a buzz bait and catch some spotted bay bass. The lagoon us pretty clean and there are tons of paddle boards and kayaks to rent. There is also some beach areas and a dog beach on one side. Took my husband wakeboarding for fathers' day and it was AMAZING. The boat was awesome, and they had everything we needed (all we brought were a few towels and a cooler). For a "busy" day, it never felt crowded. Our driver JP was outstanding. He knew how to drive to boat to help me actually stand up and stay up - and he actually helped me learn to wakeboard ... Moreover, he was patient with our three little kids (the oldest of whom is 4). They have a lot of options for the little ones to learn to ski. The staff was easy going and everyone we encountered were exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful. The water was also really clean and warm. We had been thinking about possibly buying a little ski boat, but why bother when you can just show up, have someone else who knows what they are doing drive the boat, and then not have to deal with any of the prep or clean up! One word of caution for potential paddle boarders... beware of the wind when making your return to the dock/shore/whatever. Picked the perfect place to try SUP for the first time. I was a little hesitant at first but after talking to a couple employees that were very positive and not pushy I said let's do it! My husband chose the Kayak and I did the paddle board. Jake introduced us to the lagoon and answered all our questions and concerns and made us feel comfortable for our first time trying this. The lagoon was calm, only a couple jet skis on the water. I did fall off the board and Jake came running over on shore and asked if I needed help but I wanted to get back up on my own and he waited until I did and also gave very encouraging words of support, very nice young man.
