This is my family's favorite thing todo when vacation at Oceanside. They have all the equipment and safety gear needed. At very reasonable prices! We get kayaks and standup paddle boards, they always help us in and out of the kayaks and are very lenient with your return times. read more

My wife planned a morning to learn how to paddle board and we've heard this was the place to go AND there was a great Groupon deal too! From parking to paying to getting our gear; the service was great and very helpful. You do have to sign a quick waiver before heading out but it only takes a minute or two to complete. They have chairs and tables available at first come first serve basis and a store for snacks and other water equipment available for purchase. They give you a quick crash course on how to paddle board and your on your way! The lagoon was nice however you do share the waters with boats and jet skiers so the water can get very choppy at times - advice: try to get here early in the morning to avoid the choppy waters from jet skiers. We went all the way to the other side of the lagoon where there was a nice little beach to soak in the sun. It was the perfect date day for us--we had a Groupon for two hours of any water sport. Since we had never aqua cycled, we decided to give it a shot. After an hour of leisure around the lagoon and waving hello to friendly strangers, we asked if we could kayak instead. The workers were nice enough to grant us that and off we went. **Review of the actual body of water, not the business that operates under the same name** This body of water sucks, let me count the ways. 1. There are two sides to this lagoon that straddle the 5 freeway, one beautiful and serene, and one crowded with boat traffic. The boat traffic side is open for public use, the pretty side is reserved for YMCA only. 2. If you plan to kayak or SUP here using your own equipment, you'll need to buy a permit for $13 per boat, and you can't buy the permit at the lagoon (of course NOT, sarcasm) - you have to go to the local public pool and buy the permit there. 3. Only about 75% of the lagoon is open to motor boats and it's super crowded - the air is thick with exhaust. Everyone is on top of each others wake and I wouldn't dare a take a paddle vehicle of any sort into that area for fear of being run over or toppled by large wake. 4. The interesting marshy wetlands, where you might see wildlife live, is roped off, you can't explore that area. 5. The canal is disgusting, so much algae ... My first paddle board experience was last summer here at The Carlsbad Lagoon! The lagoon is okay, it's small and the water is...iffy. But I got a groupon to try paddle boarding and...I'm pretty sure it's gonna be my new hobby!! The staff was super helpful and just a bunch of laid back guys, family members I think? I got the Groupon deal for my first time. My friend and I did the stand up paddle boarding to try. It was pretty awesome! I enjoyed being in the water and just sailing along with my music and just taking in the fresh air. No worries about anything (except falling in the water). Two star less due to their customer service. The "lifeguard" was texting. No regards to who was in the water or what was happening. The "employees" by the water are EXTREMELY BAD AT CUSTOMER SERVICE. The girl in the front giving you a post-it note that indicates which water toy you were using, answered questions, but definitely could use more of a smile. Not sure anyone there knows how to smile and/or be nice. Was instructed to go to the yellow umbrella. There were 2. So what do you do? You go to the most yellow umbrella you see (wrong one). It wasn't yellow. It was a tan color leaf umbrella. Confused at what I was suppose to do, finally someone came up to me and mentioned to go "over there". The guy then took my post-it note and proceeded to tell me to get a paddle from the green trash can and then meet him at the water. Done. Get next to the water. Still confused. Not sure who is suppose to help us. We asked someone and they said, "Hey Bob (name has been changed for their privacy), did you help them over there?"... "yeah, I'll help them"... Hey, thanks for pawning me off like a rag doll. Instructions were as follows, "Stand in the middle of the board with your feet apart, bend your knees and when you're ready, use your paddle to push off the sand"... Easy enough. Pushed off, and left. Spent the next hour or so just enjoying the scenery. Came back only to be confused again. A guy came up and said, "you're done?" We said yes. And then proceeded to wash off the boards with NO INDICATION ABOUT WHAT TO DO. Do I have to check out? Do I need to put these paddles anywhere? Do I need to put the board away? Do I just stand by the water until someone comes up to me and takes my paddle? As a new comer, I had no idea what to do and their procedures. Maybe if the customer service focused more on the customers than their phones, it might be a little more successful. But I guess that's what you get when you hire teenager/young adults. read more

This page is a little misleading, as "Carlsbad Lagoon" is a public place, but this page is actually for the private business located at the address above. I guess they must have the web address too. The public location for the lagoon is at the end of Bayshore Drive, at the end of which is a nice little sandy beach. This is the only place the public can launch their kayaks and Paddle Boards from, unless they want to pay an additional fee for rental at the paddleboard club or at the address above. It should also be noted that if you do want to use your SUP or kayak on the lagoon, the City of Carlsbad requires you to buy an annual permit which can be bought at the public pool on Monroe st. read more

It was my first experience with water sports and I did not want to be in the ocean for the very first time. This is a good place to start, if you haven't tried it before. It is pretty close to the beaches also, in case you want to go in for a dip after the fun activities. The staff here is very nice and helpful. They were sweet enough to click pictures for us as well. One ticket is good for two hours where you can choose any type of water activity from aqua-cycle, kayak, jet-ski, paddle-boat, SUP or Canoe. The lagoon is about 6-12 feet, so it is pretty safe. The activities are fun and relaxing. On a good day(weather-wise), I would love to return to try something new. read more

A friend and I went to Carlsbad Lagoon to do some flat water SUPing. I had passed it a bunch of times on I-5 and thought it looked like a lot of fun. When we got there it looked nice enough. My friend rented a SUP and it cost her $50 for 2 hours, which is on the high side for rentals that I have seen in the San Diego area. The rentals are good quality boards, and as a beginner she had no problem getting the hang of it. I brought my own board but was surprised by the fact that I would be charged a $15 fee just to put in, as well as required to purchase a $9 permit. Permit? For what?!? I wasn't fishing or something... We shrugged off the annoying hidden costs in favor of trying out a new spot. The lagoon itself is nice enough, but paddling from the dock area to the calm area was a nightmare once the jets skis got going. We never fell off but it was kind of a pain. It wasn't all that busy the day we were there, so I can only imagine the mess you run into when you factor in ski boats too. Once we got to the No Wake area the scenery was pretty nice and we got to see herons and lots of fish jumping. But to be honest, the area had quite the stench and the view of the huge stacks from the plant nearby was lacking. We also saw quite a bit of trash floating in the water. There is no parking here, except what you might be able to find on a steep gravel hill. I brought my own SUP and the best way to put in was to unload the board at the water's edge then park. Otherwise I would have been hauling it down and up a very steep hill. I love to SUP, but I wish there were more options for flat water SUP in N County. Honestly, I have zero desire to ever go back to Carlsbad Lagoon. I will just head south to Mission Bay instead. There is no comparison. read more

My friend came here in the middle of winter, which I am assuming is the off-season. Although living in SD, is there ever an off season for water sports?? Hashtag SDpride :-P The guy working was super helpful and very reassuring, despite my obvious apprehension at going in a small kayak I was sure I was going to tip over. (Just for the record-I didn't tip. Not even once :-P) Our Group-On deal was only for 2 hours, but he told us we could take as long as we wanted. (Very cool of you, Mr. Lagoon-Worker, very cool.) Once we were in the water, we made a lil loop around a few times and enjoyed the scenery, we even pulled the kayak out and stopped on one of the shores and took goofy pix of ourselves holding the paddles and sitting in the kayak. There was almost no one else in the entire lagoon except for us! LOVED IT! Afterward, the staff was totally cool with us just chillin, and eating our sack lunches on a picnic table over-looking the water. (Even just watching others have fun was quite relaxing-I may have just found a new secret get-away spot. Shhhh....don't give away my secret.) Note: There is a huge driveway/hill to drive down. I have to give CL 5*'s because I would be a liar if I posted anything less. My family and I moved here 6 weeks ago and I have been here, no joke, 12-15 times. We have only ever SUP because kayaking is abundant from where we are from and the jet ski space is too small and scary, so I can only comment in SUP. The girls at the front desk are really nice and I have been there so many times, they now remember my name which is sweet. If this is your first time out, maybe go on your bottom or your knees to get past the jet skis and then there will be no wake. There are a lot of mullet fish, so that is really fun to see them popping out of the water, it looks like someone skipping a rock in front of you. The current on the way back is strong, so if you have someone in your group not as strong, maybe don't go out too far. I am thankful for this company that has made me a better SUP rider and giving my family something fun to do. read more

This place was so damn awesome. You can literally walk up and be on a Waverunner within 5 minutes. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable but most of all laid back. They have a few rules but once you get out on the lagoon it's hilariously awesome. Nothing compares to going at that speed riding on a safety net the entire time. I was pulling ridiculous stunts and was literally hanging on to the Waverunner with just my arms (butt and legs airborne) a few times. I was in a motorcycle accident a couple years back, though, and my back was hurting the next couple days. Lots of bouncing and impact, so be careful if you have back issues on the Waverunners. read more

This place has one of the worse service i have ever gotten. I made reservations several weeks in advance and called them up on a regular basis asking questions about space, BBQ grills, and tables. And each time they answered that they have plenty of space, lots of tables and grills for us to use. A week before the event i called to confirm and to ask about reserving a table and they said that they dont take reservations and that it is all first come first serve but they had plenty of space. We then called the day of and asked about space and they said there was space but the grill was being used but we could use it when they are done.. when we got there...the whole place was packed. there was very little space on the sand. None of the tables were available and the grill was being used by a private party. When i confronted the people behind the counter - they said they have been booked up for weeks with two corporate parties who took up 95% of the space and that the tables and the ONE grill they had were reserved for the whole day. When i mentioned that we were told people cant reserve and it was all first come first serve, they said.. " oh i meant you cant reserve today..." I would stay away from this place. I didn't get to experience the entire facility and what it had to offer, but I did experience the worst customer service within the 1st 30 minutes of being at the facility. This place is definitely about quantity and not quality. Everyone and everything is all over the place, no organization and customer service. We bought 1 hour 2 jet ski passes, then were told to go outside and wait. This is when the weirdness happened. I guess the man on the throne in the picture included with this review was the owner, he looked and sounded like this big important person, ordering his young servant around with no respect to anyone around him and especially his clients. When we asked him questions he answered with such attitude and annoyance that made me leave right away. We went inside, got our refund and left as this was not worth our time. The water doesn't smell!!! Most places I do water activities at smell really badly, but this place was all right. They usually close at 4pm, but they closed at 5pm when my friend and I came. I tried to use my deal before it expired. I had gotten it so I can try canoeing for the first time. My friend and I ended up doing the aqua cycle (big wheel bike looking thing). It looks fun, and I felt like a kid again doing it. The only thing that may discourage people from doing it is that you get tired fast if you don't regularly exercise or use your legs. You can either have 1 or 2 persons on it, and it's a really good leg workout. We tried to go fast but we barely moved as fast as we'd think we'd go. We went around the areas that we were designated to go and went around a few times. The area we were allowed to stay around isn't that big, compared to other places I've done water activities at; it because of the big boats that come by. The sun was going down and we were getting tired. It probably wouldn't been more fun if I remembered to bring my music. Oh well, maybe next time. We were in a canoe this time (rather than the peddle boat). So we actually felt like we could cover some ground and have some control. Unlike last time, the very friendly and helpful staff made recommendations on where we should go (up and around the bend toward the bird conservatory). It's an entirely different experience once you get past jet ski hell. It's serene, peaceful and very beautiful! Especially when looking eastward and away from the freeway. Tons of fish jumping. Our son had a blast! Would definitely recommend renting a canoe, paddleboard or kayak. The peddle boat and bicycle thing really won't get you anywhere. read more

Came here for the first time for my 7 year old cousin's birthday party. Its pretty neat, you can reserve this large private patio deck with a big BBQ and tables. Everyone brought food and we grilled up some meat before hitting the water. The water sports rental prices seemed a bit steep compared to Mission Bay but luckily we all had groupons for the rental. The jetskiing area seemed a bit odd to me since it was a circular area where people just went around and around like a merry go round. I'm sure its still fun but I passed and would rather rent a jetski somewhere with more freedom. The lagoon is actually much larger than what you can see from the rental location, and my boyfriend and I canoed all the way from the main area down to the end of the lagoon near Canon street. Given the choice of watersports rentals I'd pick Mission Bay over the Lagoon, but if someone wanted me to meet me there I wouldnt object, its just not my first choice. read more

You can go here for free or you can rent a private party area either on the beach or at a deck, two sizes available for both. This place is freakin' awesome. A great place for a lunch break if you feel like using up some adrenalin as opposed to pigging out on fast food. They got jet skis (waverunners), kayaks, peddleboats (the overgrown tire ones that look like the tricycles you used to ride when you were a kid), and regular boats. The staff is awesome, friendly, and very helpful. They definitely make you feel welcome. I rented a waverunner and decided to tear up the lagoon. Fun! There's no real waves there, but after carving up the water, it's possible to create enough wakes to add good bumps in the lagoon. Waverunners are great, you can fit 3 or so people on it, but the most occurs fun if everyone has their own. I had my own and in fact went during the weekday so there were only a couple of people in the lagoon. I felt like I had the whole place to myself. haha. Of course, this caused me to also take some risks and hit the wakes I created at high speeds and at weird angles. You generally don't fall off of jet ski's/waverunners, but I tried some crazy stuff that could have jettisoned me from the craft. j/k. LOL. read more

Took the whole family to go paddle-boarding for the first time ever and had a great time. Instruction was minimal, but adequate. Lagoon was calm, but all of us still managed to tip over several times. Nice place to fish along the shores at the lagoon. Watch out for the crazy tree hugging Karen walking up and down the pathway yelling at people for cutting the clearing made path to the street. She thinks she owns the entire property and feels she has a right to tell people what to do. Obviously she has nothing better to do but harass people on a saturday morning. People.like this care more about the dirt on the ground than people living in this world. Why don't you go out on a Saturday morning helping the poor and sick out there rather than kissing rocks and trees. One of my favorite places to spend an afternoon. Or all day. While I don't frequent the area where you rent the aquatics equipment, I am usually found on the opposite side of that business closer to Pacific Coast Highway side that is west of the I-5. I can be found fishing for bass and halibut, and lo and behold I have had decent luck. Nothing crazy, but I have caught enough keeper fish to bring me back to fish again. And I do practice catch and release so those little bass can grow some more. Parking can be tricky, as there a few residential areas that you can park in. Your best bet is to get an aerial view in Google or Yahoo maps and see where the best place to park is based on where you are headed for the day. You can access the beach through the dirt path as well. read more

It's a beautiful day to get out there and do something active! I came here to kayak while a few of my friends were there to paddle board. The staff was super friendly and got us out there pretty quick. Their rates are very reasonable and if you can find a deal online, it's even better. If it's great weather, the area is pretty and you can enough room for shenanigans on the water. They also separate the lagoon from any power motors like jet skiis so you won't have a wake hitting you and throwing you off balance. I definitely want to try jet skiing next time! read more

Super fun place for water activities! The lagoon is a nice size, so you don't have to worry about being crowded and runnin' over people! They even allow 2 people on a single SUP board! Sure I'm a people-person, but sometimes you don't want a million people around you (especially your first time stand up paddle boarding! Falling off into the water, etc...) The service is super chill, and it's run by surfer-dude's. I couldn't believe how easy of a process it was. Paid inside, walked down to the water, grabbed my SUP board and was on my way. We woke up one morning and decided to rent jet skis for an afternoon. Someone had pointed this place out and we gave it a try. The employees were friendly enough and they had a good amount of rental equipment. I felt the prices were a little high for an hour rental but I didn't complain. After paying we went down to the lagoon and we were given a safety briefing. We were told that there was only a certain place where we could ride the jet skis; with several jet skis on the lagoon the useable space becomes small quickly. At this point I started to complain a little about the price because we were limited to a confined space, speed, and distance from each other. During the rental my jet ski was running low on oil so I had to bring it in to get worked on. I asked the guy if this would affect my remaining time, he said no, it did. Overall we made the most out of our afternoon and rental. I don't mind paying high rental fees when I have free reign, that's what deposits are for. My sister was in town visiting from Florida. Neither one of us had ever done SUP and we wanted to experience it together. I've lived in North County most of my life and this was my first time at the Carlsbad Lagoon. I can't believe I waited so long to check it out. The employees were very chill and friendly. We went on a weekday morning so it wasn't very crowded. After a quick SUP lesson, we were on our way. Since it wasn't crowded, they were flexible with our time on the water. The lagoon was pretty peaceful until it got a bit windy and the water got choppy. But it made it more of an adventure for us. Thankfully they have the motorcrafts area bouyed off so they aren't near the SUPs or kayaks. It makes it much more relaxing to not have to worry about the boats and wave runners. Overall it was a great experience (except falling into the water...haha). My sister and I bonded & chatted while out on the water and we will laugh about falling in the water for years to come. Bathrooms were typical beach bathrooms so don't expect a hotel level restroom. Parking was easy. You can rent a locker for $5 (worth it since you can't really bring your keys or phone on the SUP with you). Cost was fair. Would definitely look for a groupon deal next time. Their store has water shoes, bathing suits, and other sun/water essentials. Can't comment on the prices though since I didn't buy anything. AND...I will absolutely be bringing my two sons (9 & 12) to the lagoon to try out some of the cool water toys (kayaks, SUP, aqua cycles, etc.). Give this place a try. Super fun experience. read more
