After shopping around for the best offer I went with Carmack because they offered me the most competitive price after a thorough in person visit of the furniture to be moved. At the time my furniture arrived to texas they informed me that my bill increased by 29% due to the final weight measured vs. the one they estimated and that they wouldn't give me my furniture until I paid the full amount. I reached to the office to complain about he huge difference in cost but they said that their estimates can be inaccurate and that they can't reduce my invoice increase. I would not use them again. It's unfortunate because everything else about them was great but a 29% increase in cost at the last moment is not acceptable. It's not like they find that information out when they arrived at my new home 10 days after they picked up my furniture. read more

Don't use them. They do not follow up with claims or offer solutions to make right. If you're like me, you hire a moving company that is insured and bonded in case damages or done. As a customer you want a sense of protection and security that the moving company will follow through and provide excellent services until completely done, which is not the case with when it comes to Carmack moving. A few months back, I hired the team at Carmack for moving services. Unfortunately, damages were done to my new home. I have yet to receive a response, update or dedication for caring about my concerns to resolve. Be aware if you hired them. As long as your move is smooth, you're good to go. Do not use this moving company. The service is trouble. The director of the moving crew was extremely rude. We called multiple times to complain about the service no one has replied. Boxes were missed labeled. Missing items. The list of bad business practices is endless when it comes to Carmack moving. We are still trying to find our belonging after 2 months of our moving. There may very well be a positive review from me from several years ago, but I'm updating that review here, and I would advise caution to prospective customers. Carmack handled the cross-country move of my belongings four years ago, from my home in Virginia to a Public Storage unit in Los Angeles. In order to give me a bit of a discount, Carmack held my belongings at their facility in Sterling for a month after I personally moved, in order to group my move with that of one or two other customers. A month later my items were delivered to my Public Storage unit in Calabasas, CA. I had planned to empty out the unit before now, but plans changed. Otherwise I would have acted on this sooner. I finally unpacked my belongings this month and discovered a large box of Le Creuset cookware (and quite a bit of other-brand cookware) was never delivered with my belongings. Either it was stolen from the Carmack facility or mistakenly delivered by Carmack to one of the other customers on the trip. Yes, the drivers provide a manifest with all of the boxes supposedly accounted for. But I can tell you right now, that box of very expensive French cast iron cookware was not packed into my storage unit. The items in the box were worth well over $1,000, and I can't afford to replace them. I assumed there was nothing I could do about Carmack's mistake after all this time. Nevertheless, I emailed this message to Carmack a week ago, and they completely ignored me. Not even an apology for the lost items. I'm so upset, I can't express it enough. The fault doesn't lie with Public Storage--that unit was so tightly packed, I would have noticed had anyone broken in. And my home in Virginia was spotless and empty when we left it. This is all on Carmack. So, a word of advice. Either security or delivery is wanting with Carmack. Make sure you keep track of how many boxes they move and what you have in them. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear they're terribly concerned about your property once they're paid. read more

We chose Carmack for our April 2023 move based on excellent reviews (to that point), competitive pricing, and a very communicative sales rep. Up until the move date, all was well. From the pack date (which we rushed to move up at their request and ended up being on Easter Sunday), through delivery (we also moved this date up again at their request), and especially through the claims process, we were very displeased. The extreme lack of communication after the move was the most frustrating as we were trying to complete the claims process. We purchased the extra full replacement value insurance. We were asked to re-submit photos and promised a quick turnaround on the items they questioned. Now months later after many, many attempts to contact them through emails and phone calls with their promises of "getting right back to us," we have not heard from them. Combine these issues with the fact that items were broken due to poor packing (which the company admitted) as well as other items destroyed (i.e. a bookcase) with the response "no one can keep these from damage" we cannot recommend Carmack. read more

On 26 February 2020, I was moved by Carmack from Lorton VA to Woodbridge VA. The overall move was excellent and the Movers where very professional and duty oriented. However, during the move one of our tv's was damaged. The movers packaged and stowed the television on its side before placing it in the movers truck. Then when they unloaded the television they stowed it on its side in our master bedroom in Woodbridge. It is known that flat screen tv's especially at the size of ours (65") are required to be stowed/placed upright at all times to balance the weight of the tv and prevent damages. Our tv is now inoperable, cracked, and displays a black distorted images due to the negligent packaging/placement by the movers. Carmack Moving has not returned any of my emails or call referencing my claim. We went with Carmack Moving company particularly, due to the customer service of Ms. Debbie. This is really disappointing. It is already costly to move and then to incur a debt to replace an appliance unexpectedly due to negligence is completely unsatisfactory. read more

I was skeptical at first because of all the questionable reviews on Yelp, but after getting a quote and such and watching the consistent social media page, I pulled the trigger. Carmack called me out of the blue and asked if they could stop by and give me a free quote on my upcoming local move from Fairfax to Oakton...I already had a quote i was happy with but I took a chance on this company because I like to support local business. Turns out their quote was within $50 of the other one, BUT with Carmack I got an extra guy (4 total rather than 3) and I learned that whenever the movers get a good review, they get a pay bonus. The rep was also very good about explaining how moving insurance worked and didn't try to push it on me. So turns out I'm super clever because these guys were AMAZING. They were on time, polite - even friendly! They finished my move-out, transfer AND move-in in FIVE HOURS. Saved me $600+ from the estimate. I searched very carefully to find a locally-owned moving company who could handle out of state moves. I was doing my own packing and had some valuable and unusual items from Cambodia. What I mostly found out there were either brokers -- stay away, as they just drive down the price and have NO accountability for your move -- or companies that subcontract out the move and don't know anything about your crew. I only had a partial load but needed professionals to handle the unique items. The truth of the matter is that the moving experience comes down to the crew that packs you up and the crew that unloads you! Everyone else just talks to you but they aren't part of the actual experience. Well, I am lucky I found Carmack! Alejandra began the process with very clear and helpful communication and then Jim followed up and went through every last detail of the estimates. They rounded up a ton of boxes of various sizes and shapes for me -- that is one of the most frustrating parts of packing for your own move! The crew arrived to load my stuff on time. Rob had built a custom crate for my piece from Cambodia. They were careful and efficient with everything. They also have a good inventory system so there is no confusion about exactly what they have. They arrived at my place in SC exactly when they said they would and the crew doing the unloading was absolutely wonderful! Carmack moved me from West Palm Beach Fl to Durango Colorado and they did a fine job. The movers were so kind and respectful and they really knew their stuff. I had a couple of lamp shades that didn't fare too well--I'm still using them right now so they're not awful. Nothing was broken, a few scuffs here and there. There is one bad spot on my dining room table that looks like wet white paper that I can't get off--so the table will always be covered. Other than that, the prices were about the same as the other major movers and Debbie, who did the estimating, was great. All in all, I would use them again and recommend them highly. Jeri read more

We agreed on the price of $125 an hour for (3) men and one hour of commuting time for $125. Movers showed up on time at my apartment door and did a walk through. However, they returned to their truck and it was 20 minutes before they returned back to my apartment. My main complaint is that one of the workers whom took apart our (2) bed frames and re-installed the bed frames at our new location, used a "hand screwdriver" to take many, many screws and bolts apart. This took so much time meaning that only (2) workers were moving our furniture and property. Where was his "power tools" which would have made his job much faster and saved us money. Our last moving company used power tools to take apart furniture and re-assemble. We moved from a two bedroom apartment in Crystal City area of Arlington, VA., to Fairfax, VA and it took them (9) hours to complete!!! That's $1,100.00 folks?? We sold some big furniture items which they didn't have to move. The couch & dInette set. We were completely packed up when the movers arrived and not once did we hold them up. After packing the truck and leaving Crystal City, we were ready to immediately drive to Fairfax and unload our furniture and property. But no, the team leader said his guys were going to stop and get something to eat!!! They stopped at a McDonalds which cost us an additional 35 minutes. I called Carmack to get a quote on moving our baby grand piano. Bruce told me he would try to get me a flat rate and would call me back. He called back and said that he had called a piano moving specialist to get a quote for me because he thought they might be able to do it for less than Carmack. He game me the phone number for the other company and a contact name. Thanks to Bruce we are saving at least $200 on the piano move. We appreciate Bruce, his honesty and excellent customer service. If the rest of Carmack operates like Bruce and his looking-out-for-our-customers approach then this is definitely a top rate company. We know who we're calling for our next move. Carmack is the moving company you want to root for - small, locally owned business with a really friendly staff. Plus, the people who move your goods are all full-time company employees. Unfortunately, my move with them was no where near as good as promised. My move: they were to pick up the goods, store it for a few months and send it to the other side of the country. I priced Carmack, Town & Country and J&K and wish I would have used one of the other firms. Communication with Carmack was TERRIBLE - no one would reply to me about when my items were delivered; when they failed to deliver within the promised window no one called to let me know they were not coming; no one ever told me how much the shipment weighed until after payment was due (against federal regulations), and they over charged me over $2000 (which I would not have known about unless I pressed for the weight and detailed information). SUMMARY: Carmack employees are very nice and the guys on the ground moving your items are good; but save yourself from their terrible communication and poor accounting/billing practices by using one of the region's other quality carriers. read more

Carmack Moving & Storage Experience March - April 2015 The salesperson provided a reasonable estimate. However, as typical with most businesses (large and small), Sales and Operations do not always communicate so just confirm that what you discussed with the sales estimator is conveyed to the operations team. By general standards, overall the move went well in early March (we have moved 7 times in the 23 years using everyone from local 'mom and pop' operations to global corporate/government relocation services). We did have one item damaged and filed a claim for it. We were still waiting for a reply this month to our insurance claim but after finally juggled our schedules to review the damage it was a simple cabinetry repair which Carmack's Operations Manager personally took care of at our residence in an hour; no hassle with locating a repairman. All I can say is, WOW. We had a special situation requiring overnight storage and additional help, and the folks at Carmack went above and beyond to take care of our needs and give us a good deal. The movers were very polite and made sure to be careful with our things. They checked to make sure everything was packed up the way we wanted, and they even packed loose items we hadn't thought to pack, no extra charge! They triple checked that all our items went to the appropriate rooms. They also worked very fast! I don't know how they do it! This Company is the absolute worst. COMMUNICATION IS THE WORST. They are nothing but robbers. They tell you one thing and do another. The guys that came to move our things were really nice but the people in the office was terrible, especially Rob C and Jim. Jim gave us a quote to move our things from the old house to the new house. Our new house was not ready to be moved in and they charged us 300 dollars per day for storage (rip off). We agreed okay. The next day we were ready for our things to be delivered, they told us that it's an additional 2,500 for redelivery fee, (complete rip off) the 2500 was never discussed in the beginning with Jim when we talked to him. Rob then said (extremely rude) that until the 300 per day for storage fee and the additional 2500 was paid they were not going to release our items. I swear I wished we had chosen another moving company. Please, save your time and money. CARMACK IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST. All our belongings was in that truck. This is a complete robbery to us. THE TOTAL WE SPENT WAS ALMOST 8 THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM WHEN THEY MOVED THE OLD HOUSE TO THE DAY THEY MOVED OUR THINGS TO THE NEW HOUSE. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME. read more

Have used three times since early 2011. First, a move from the west coast to Virginia. Then, a change of apartments and moving items from storage to the apartment. Finally, a local move from apartment to house. The west coast move was very fortunate, as I was flexible in scheduling, and could wait for a Carmack truck to already be out west for a delivery This made the cost really reasonable, and was a win for everyone (as the truck would have returned to the east coast empty). I was able to put my car in the truck, which saved me about $1000 more. Final cost was as estimated. For the two local moves we had the same crews both times (about 12 months apart). Everything went very well, no damage, hard working guys. I had some new, expensive book cases that were well wrapped and protected (no damage). Both times the actual cost was as estimated. Both times crews arrived as scheduled. Again, no issues, done as expected, cost as expected. read more

Our experience with Carmack was fantastic and we highly recommend them. They were extremely nice and attentive in all aspects of our local move. Ron, the operations manager, was a pleasure to work with. The office staff was very helpful and focused on our needs and the movers themselves were some of the hardest working people we've ever seen. They did all they could to complete the move as quickly as possible to limit the cost and they took great care of our things. They showed up an hour late, and then three of the movers spent the first two hours basically standing around watching one guy work. My husband and I had to constantly go find them in the truck, where they were chatting and hanging out. Not surprisingly, the move took several hours longer than expected, and we ended up having to pay then hundreds of dollars more than their estimate. They gave us a free month of storage while our house was being built as well. So everything was great until the actual delivery. So our house was on time to be finished no issues. So we signed the contract for delivery no issues. Then hurricane Matthew hit Charleston where we were moving. Then it all went bad. House got delayed. Closing got pushed but not the movers. So they started out okay working with us. We were communicating just fine with the Operations Manager no issues. Then our closing got delayed another week. Tried to work out the timing with the OP Mgr but he said he couldn't because of two other customers that had been delayed but weren't affected by the hurricane. So we had to find a storage unit and have it unloaded and then find new movers to move it in. It was hassle. All we needed was an extra 4 days. And the OP Mgr told me since the other two customers weren't affected there was nothing he could do. Are you serious? There was a category 4 hurricane with flooding everywhere and power outages. Told us he had already delayed the other ones by two days and that were all they could do. So we asked for some assistance and got a list of storage places. We called around to ask other movers what they would have done and basically they would have arranged for the delivery and storage with another moving company taking on the financial burden to make it work for us. The bottom line that the OP Mgr told us was that they couldn't do anything and they were protected by the contract and the federal government in cases like this. So with all this said I would not recommend Carmack at all. I do believe they should have done better customer service and not hide behind a contract. read more

Carmack Moving and Storage was recommended to us from a friend who used them years ago. If there was ever a company where the phrase "past performance does not guarantee future results" applied, it's Carmack Moving and Storage. The sales rep was very nice, on-time and after a walk through of our townhouse sent us two estimates for the first move (majority of items) and second move (remaining items used for staging home). The first move quote was for $862.50. The second move quote was for $575.00. Combined total for house of $1,437.50. The movers were extremely polite and we worked well with them. Unfortunately, the integrity portion of Carmack management came to surface at the end of the day of the first move, when they told me to sign the bill for $1,660.00 - more than the two moves combined. It was 7:30pm so no manager was available to call and the movers insisted I sign and work it out the next day. Believing it could be worked out the next day was my mistake. Their Moving Scheduler and Ops Manager both assured us they would look into it the next day, make adjustments/refunds and lower the cost of the second move in case more furniture was moved than expected. I placed half a dozen calls and emails approaching the second move, each time with assurance it would be worked out. Come the day of the move, they never showed up. I'm fortunate enough to have friends that offered to help with the assistance of a Uhaul, otherwise we could have jeopardized the sale of our home. To this day, no refund, no communication and no apology. I was about as polite as I could be, emailed the estimates vs the receipt, even invited them to come back to the house or look at the MRIS listing pictures to confirm that all the furniture we used for staging was still in the house (not moved the first time). It's the lack of integrity to call back, offer an alternative solution, partial refund or show up for the second move that really took us aback. The bottom line: With Carmack Moving & Storage, perhaps they were once a professional company but their actions indicate those days are long gone. Just a common bait-and-switch operation now. In hindsight, we should have chosen a more reputable larger moving company and not taken a gamble with them. read more

I do not think I could have hired a better company. I am so pleased on how they moved my 21,000 pounds. They picked up my fully furnished three level townhome on Saturday which took six hours, six guys and two 26 ft. trucks. They delivered on Sunday 60 miles away with six guys and it also took six hours to unpack. They were great, especially their team leader "Oscar". We had no damage. They showed up at both ends on time and at 8:00am. I would definitely use this company again. I did get five moving estimates and they were one of my lowest bids, Debbie did a great job quoting me something very competitive. I did go to their office, met the owner and support staff and they were all great. They also had a very well organize warehouse which I did not need and many trucks. read more

Set up an appointment with Mike on Carmack Moving & Storage on 7/6/17 at 4:00 for our interstate move. The appointment was confirmed by the office on 7/5 and Mike the morning of the 6th. 4:00 came and went. I called Mike & got voice mail so had to leave a message at 5:00 and 5:30. At 6:00 & 6:30 I texted him. He finally replied saying "Sorry, I can't communicate with you." As an HR manager, I know this is another way of saying he quit or was fired. No one from Carmack called to tell us he wouldn't be coming out, not the 6th. I let that slide knowing it's difficult to cover a sales persons appointments at the last minute expecting someone from Carmack would call the next morning with an apology and to reschedule. That call never materialized on the 7th or any other day. Yes, I could call them for an explanation and to reschedule, but figured if this how they treat you when they're trying to earn your business, I don't want to know how they treat you once they have your belongings to hold hostage. read more

Carmack Moving & Storage is the best. I've used them several times now, for both personal and business, and wouldn't think of calling anyone else. They are professional, on time, and on quote. You work with your Sales Rep for quoting and scheduling. On moving day, you work with your Team Lead, tell him what you want/need, you do this one time and there is no need to explain it again to anyone else. The ladies in the office are efficient and willing to assist no matter what your need. The first time I used them, I thought that I would do some of the work ahead of time, so I chose to pack in order to get a cheaper rate. However, on moving day, everything was still not packed. They came in and made very short work of what I had been spending days on. Won't make that mistake again. I just recently saw the history of Carmack and see that they started in 1985 with just one 1972 pickup truck. This is a family owned and operated business and that kind of growth just doesn't happen by providing anything but the best of service.
