I know there is a lot of complaints on how the taste has changed. Maybe it's a raw material issue or maybe they just changed things up, who knows. I still find it better than going to one of the bigger chain ice cream shops. I live in the area it moved to so it's only a couple blocks from me so I will choose it every time. In fact my little one and I stopped in on Sunday for a couple cones and K-9 cup for the pup at home. I grew up going to the original spot all the time while visiting that area, so having it down the road now is great. They set up a beautiful bench area outside on nice days. Sorry to the locals that like this just because it's local, but Carman's is inferior to the widely distributed Turkey Hill and Green's. So obviously it can't come close to competing with the local premium ice cream, Perry Dell. This so-called "ice cream" has way too much water and not enough cream which is apparent from the crystalline texture. I grew up eating Carmen's ice cream. My favorite vanilla and chocolate. But the half gallons I purchased about 2 weeks ago were not the same as usual. Especially the vanilla. Something is off with the recipe. It is too creamy, too sweet. Not the same as it was. I am hoping this is just a one-time mistake because if it is the way they are doing it from now on I won't be buying it. Since they have moved the business from Loganville to way out in west York I have noticed their ice cream is not the same. We now have to get it at a local country store, which would be great if were any good. I most certainly would not make a trip the whole way out there. Carman's use to supply ice cream to all the schools in the West Shore School District. I had their delicious ice cream the whole way from kindergarten to high school. When I started working at Adhesives Research, I would stop and get ice cream from their location in Logansville when I wasn't traveling for work. This place is a national treasure. read more

We have loved Carmen's Ice Cream for decades. Recently, something has changed. It is no longer the icy cold wonderful ice cream that it used to be a few months ago. It is the only ice cream we buy by the 1/2 gallon and have recently been disappointed with the change in it. It is too fluffy, overly sweet and no longer the icy cold treat we once enjoyed. Some friends who also love it have noticed the change too and say they will no longer be buying it. Carmen's ice cream is the absolute best ice cream I've ever tasted! We have family that lives in Glenrock and every holiday that we got together. They always had Carmens for dessert. Whenever I am in the area I make sure I stop by and pick up whatever fun flavor they have going on. The cheese cake ice cream is one of the best that I've ever tasted, as well as the blueberry. Great local place that has been here forever. The ice cream shop is a little building behind a house. Parking for several cars off street right at the shop. Walk in and order from behind a chain at the freezers basically. No where to sit inside but a couple of sweet little benches in the shade outside. They sell by the cup, pint, quart or gallon. They also have a rack with a few local pretzel and chip choices. Bring cash, and small bills at that. No credit/debit available. We had tea berry, peach and vanilla. All great. What a great little spot that truly lives up to the description "old fashioned." We were in the area today to ride the historic steam train in New Freedom, PA with our 3 year old twin boys and then were looking for an ice cream shop to hit afterwards. This place was a great find. The shop is very small and the ice cream isn't scooped up for you but comes in cups, pints and other sizes that are prepackaged. We didn't mind because the experience was very cool, the people were super friendly, and the ice cream was delicious. The woman who served us said this business has been around since the 1950's and had been in the family for three generations. It's a great throwback to what it must've been like to go for nice cream back in the 50's and 60's before Cold Stone, BR, etc started to dominate. We would definitely stop here again. read more

The last time I remember a little cup of ice cream that I had to peel back and eat with a little wooden spoon, I think I was 5 years old. Oh how it brought me back to my childhood. This was my first visit to Carmans, and although I'd never been there I would certainly go back. The ice cream had a very creamy texture and was absolutely delicious. The price was not so bad either. I would guess the cups were about 8oz. and 1.25 a cup. Not bad. All in all, nice little hole in the wall. Check it out! read more

carman's ice cream is a york county gem and has been a personal and family favorite forever. i stick with the basics - chocolate and vanilla, but they have many more types. as another review said, their ice cream is on the icy side - and it feels a little sandy in your mouth but that's part of the appeal for me! it is not sickening sweet like many of the commercial brands. it's easy to miss the street that you turn onto for the shop so keep an eye out. read more
