'm extremely frustrated with my experience at CarMax. I purchased a 2019 Ford EcoSport 2019, and it has been nothing but problems ever since. Shortly after getting the car, the check engine light came on--and it hasn't been a one-time issue. It keeps coming back, along with ongoing oil pump problems that should have NEVER been overlooked before selling the vehicle. This is a serious mechanical issue, not something minor. What's even worse is the lack of support. I'm still dealing with these same problems and getting little to no real help. Every time I try to get this resolved, I feel like I'm being brushed off or given the runaround instead of actual solutions. It's exhausting and unfair as a paying customer. I trusted CarMax to sell a reliable vehicle, but instead I've been stuck with ongoing repairs, stress, and no accountability. I would never recommend anyone to go to Carmax of East Haven, Connecticut. They sell cars that have been recalled they lie unprofessional service department, especially who gave me a incorrect email hung up on me all day today they sold me a BMW that had a recall on the engine resulting in me not even having the car for three years. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, went back and got another car and I am now having problems with that which happens to be leaking oil haven't even had the car six months of course it's past the 30 day warranty. Again if you look them up, they have several lawsuits against them for similar complaints. Also not registering vehicle vehicles. Fraudulent loans I have no paperwork on this vehicle. I reached out to the customer relations department. I have also called a local news channel and plan to go after them full force so that this never happens to anyone else. I've also contacted the Better Business Bureau and I'm currently working with the attorney general of Connecticut again please do not do business with them. Maybe people have had good experiences. Sold my vehicle 1/25/2025. It has been a month and the alleged "check" still has not been received by my bank. I've been harassed and just paid two more months in my vehicle to avoid my credit to be destroyed. I keep calling Carmax, they continue to take down my name and phone number and NO ONE CALLS ME BACK! This is absolutely BIZARRE and unacceptable. Next steps is calling the BBB and the press to see if someone has the decency to call me back and resolve this issue. Seriously, I do not think I could have envisioned having a better car selling experience than the one I had when I sold my used vehicle to the CarMax here in East Haven. The process was straightforward, quick and everything I didn't think it would be. When I was looking for a buyer for my old, beat up car that I had owned for 12 years, I struggled to figure where I would sell it. At first, I tried sites such as autotrader.com, but the offers coming in were not trustworthy and from random dealerships that were not very responsive. After speaking with someone I knew about their selling experience at another CarMax, I decided to look up the closest CarMax and give them a try. Unlike other used car dealerships, CarMax will buy your car with a no hassle/non-negotiable offer on paper, which sort of makes it easier at the end of the day knowing that they give a "take or leave it" offer and the offer is good for 7 days. If you don't like the offer, you don't have to take it and can shop your car elsewhere. As for this location, the process described was exactly as advertised. I had come in once for an appraisal, but due to a technicality on my car title (as a result of the DMV's mistake), I had to go to the DMV to update it and come back. So I brought my car in with no appointment for a 2nd time, walked in and let a sales associate, Edis, know that I was seeking a new appraisal to sell my car. Edis was extremely friendly and he sat me down, took down all of my car information and someone immediately appraised the vehicle. Within 45 minutes, I was given an offer, proceeded to accept it, signed a few documents (including my car title) and left with a check for my vehicle. JUST LIKE THAT. It was that easy! I wish I had a more interesting story, but that was all there was to it. On top of it, because I had to go to the DMV to have my car title updated to correct the technicality, the general manager, Roddick, offered to pay the fee to have my car title updated. I know my experience sounds too good to be true, but everything worked out beautifully. Typically, no one likes to go to a used car dealership, and I'm one of them, but if you're looking to sell your vehicle, I would highly recommend looking into CarMax because the process is as straightforward as it gets and their sales associates are very helpful in walking you through it. And for anyone who lives in NYC, like myself, unfortunately this is the closest CarMax location, which is about 2-2.5 hours away, but if you want a no hassle experience with selling your car, it's worth the drive to East Haven. read more

CarMax provided me with the best offer in the value of my vehicle. If you are honest with the online inquiry, the estimate is the same as the final offer (or at least mine was). The employees do not pressure you. The offer is good for a certain number of days, so you can shop around and weigh your options. When it came time to do the paperwork, the staff was knowledgeable and quick. There is a considerable amount of paperwork, but that is normal. You are selling your vehicle to CarMax. I bought the car of my dreams, or so I thought. I love jeep wranglers, and I've had a number of them over the years. This one is probably my least favorite, and I was not happy as the doors literally closed of the store one night when I got to see it for the first time. I expected a really good car for what I paid $$$$ but I found the jeep interior and other manufactured car parts that did not belong - They were definitely second hand and from a whole different brand of car. So clearly it was done on the cheap. Big lesson learned I should've looked at the car beforehand, however, the problem is that they had to ship it from five states away. I put down a deposit already and they had taken my old car so I was stranded! I really had no choice but to take it, and don't get me wrong I still love it, but I would've liked to have addressed a number of things with it. I find the service center very helpful and it was great to trade in my car. I just wish that all the parts were genuine because it makes such a difference to how these things look and work. read more

Everyone wants to know what is it like to sell your car to CarMax. I can only tell you about my own personal experience here. It was fantastic. I submitted a request for a quote on my car, I was pleased with their offer which exceeded most others by several thousands of dollars. It was exactly $2K below the current market value of my car according to CarFax. It was not the highest offer but I trusted CarMax based on my research and their reputation to deliver, and they did. Well financially they delivered. I had to deliver my car to them. However, let me contrast that with CarGuru who offered me more money and was willing to pick my car up BUT I would not get my money on th spot. That would come 2-3 days later and of course there was no guarantee it would match their offer. Well all I can say to that is no, No, NO THANK YOU! I followed my instincts about CarGuru and while walking my dog the evening before delivering my car to CarMax, I met a fellow dog walker who turned out to in the car selling business and told me NOT to deal with CarGuru. He said to stick to CarMax or CarVana only. That is hot off the dog network (as I call it) people. CarMax was easy. I got their offer, made an appointment for the following day, drove my car there and received the exact amount of money they originally offered me. I was in and out of CarMax with my check in hand in an hour and a half, and I was about 15 minutes late. By the way, the only reason I was 15 minutes late was because I made the decision to have my car detailed before brining it in to be sold. It is certainly did not hurt the evaluation process. Everyone I met there was friendly and professional from the front desk check in person to Andrew who handled my sale. I had a completely positive experience here and I highly recommend them. My son bought a car last September and so far so good. At the time, he was quickly approved for a loan with a fair interest rate and the paperwork was easy. He bought an extended warranty for a reasonable price, so that made me feel comfortable about him buying a used car. The woman at the DMV office there was awesome - great personality and explained all of the documents we were signing. What would have made the experience perfect is a follow-up call or email from the salesperson, perhaps a week later to see how the car is, or to ask for a review so that one could give feedback on the experience. It was my son's first major purchase, so a follow-up call, to make sure that all is well, would have been nice. I think that since they are not on commission and you could finish with a different salesperson than you started with (like we did), they don't connect well with the customers. Update: my son when to get his first oil change and the oil pan only had one screw holding it on!! They obviously don't check the cars as well as they say. read more

This place shouldn't get a single star, frankly. We purchased a vehicle from CarMax. Within less than 10,000 miles and five months of driving it, we've had to change the transmission fluid (it had not been changed, apparently, before they sold the vehicle to us - it should have been changed whether it was considered "due" or not) (a 500 dollar service), we have encountered a problem with a coolant fan (a 950 dollar repair), and the transmission has a malfunction: it jolts going from first to second gear (this has not yet been checked as we are in the middle of addressing the first two issues). We told Carmax we didn't want to keep this vehicle. It is completely unreasonable for a vehicle to have this many issues five months / less than 10,000 miles into the purchase. We have no idea what any of the potential transmission troubles will cost to repair. CarMax has offered to cover ONE week of car rental while the car is repaired. This is completely unacceptable and is a complete insult. This is what the sales representative offered after speaking to management and what corporate customer relations has offered to help with so far. This resolution is not commensurate with the scale of problems and costs associated with these events. Carmax does not provide honest customer service and sales, period. Beware of responses to bad reviews from the merchant here: a complaint to the Better Business Bureau we sent has gone unanswered for one month. read more

I sold my 2014 Subaru Impreza to CARMAX last year at the Waterbury, CT facility. They were very professional, but they follow a rigid formula with very little room to deviate. So, even though my car was in great shape and had aftermarket additions like fog lights, the only thing that counted were the factory installed options. They paid me $9500 which was just barely above Kelly Bluebook. Since there is no haggling on either end of the transaction, you can only accept or reject their offer, no negotiating. read more

I drove 1.5 hrs from NY and mentally prepared myself for the worst case scenario (to drive there just to get a low-ball offer, leave without selling my car, and driving back in Sunday traffic); but this CarMax experience honestly exceeded my expectations. I came here on a Sunday afternoon after obtaining an online quote a few days prior, and the whole process was smooth and painless. Honestly, I was skeptical they would honor the price I was quoted since it was *more* than what I had purchased the car for brand new about 2.5 years prior. But sure enough they honored the online quote I obtained; no haggling, no negotiations - zero back and forth. I was greeted at the door, checked in at their business office, gave them my offer code, paperwork + key, and sat down in waiting area (all this took less than 5 minutes). From where I was waiting, I could see they sent a guy out to inspect the car. He inspected and took photos of the interior, exterior, and under the hood (this took no more than 15 min). Then I waited for about 30 min and they came out with the full offer. I then pulled my car into their garage and went into their business office to complete paperwork (took about 10 minutes), got my check and license plates back, and off I went. My car had low miles and I didn't have a lien on my title which probably helped save a bit of time. The whole process was so quick, especially on a Sunday afternoon. Me and my wife bought a 2014 camaro ss convertible with 32000 miles on February 23RD 2018.Car needed alignment, brakes were low 4mm pads,key would not come out of the ignition after shut off the car,convertible top was leaking inside the car back carpet,water in right taillight,damaged left rear quarter above the rear tire hammered out by someone not professional! I got an estimate from a body shop to fix the body for $650.00. They refused to fix the body.They refused to fix the brakes. They took about 20 minutes to get the car appraised and another 20 to finish the paperwork and print up the check. On the downside, they misplaced my drivers license during the transaction and now I have to head to the DMV to get a replacement which totally sucks. So we live on Long Island but there were no used Fiat 500's to be found on Long Island and my daughter was dead set on one. We looked it up on CarMax, she fell in love, I emailed them with a question, they emailed right back w/an answer, I told them that we wanted the car but we couldn't get to Connecticut for 2 weeks, they put the car on hold, with their help we took care of the financing and insurance on our end. When we showed up on Saturday morning (bright and early) our sales woman Sonja was waiting for us, took us for a test drive and while we did the paperwork they washed it and put a big beautiful bow on it. The whole process took about 2 hours. My daughter is thrilled, so are we! Great experience, couldn't have been better! Anyways.. for my visit I dealt with Michael Hayes and he is such a cool guy, very nice and easy to talk to. Trust me when I say he's cool, didn't mind me walking around the lot hopping in and out of cars as I waited for a 2012 Subaru Impreza to be appraised and the second day I had two toddlers with me for another appraisal on a 2015 Honda CR-V. The 2012 Impreza with 109k miles they offered $4500 which is bit low as Subaru does hold its value. A private sale I could probably get $7500. Anyways not a big deal. A car like that with a ton of miles will not be sold on their lot and instead in an auction, as you can see they mainly have 2015s and up with lower miles. The CRV was a lease and I inquired about if they could buy it out because I was already 20k over my miles and 5 more months to go. They offered me a great price so I sold it to them! I still owed carmax money but not as much as I would have owed Honda with all their BS fees! Win for me! Jenn in the business office is really easy to work with and is very knowledgeable. I recently bought a 16 Nissan Rogue. 10 -15 mins after buying it I notice this "clunking" sound coming from the front when I start to slow down intro first gear that I certainly did not hear during the test drive. I parked at my house and put it into reverse and that's when I heard the loudest grinding noise and again when put into drive and every time I changed gears. I immediately emailed the salesman Kevin as they were closing very soon, he simply reply I'm sorry your experiencing this, please call Terry in service in the morning. The next day I call Terry and it goes to voicemail and I leave a message, no call back whatsoever. I emailed her as well, no email back. The next day I call her again left another message, no call back again.The third day I call service 4 times in a row and it just goes to voicemail. On my way home I call again and guess who answers? Terry who claims she had no voicemails or emails from me which is bullshit. I explain the situation and how unhappy I am and Terry simply says "bring it to Nissan". At this point I'm loosing it and state clearly the warranty is with CarMax and you sold me this car, you need to look at it and fix it and i am entitled to a loaner vehicle as Kevin said Would be done if the car needed to ever come in. Terry said that's not true and asked who told me that, I said Kevin and she says well if he told you that I guess it's true. She says bring it in 2 weeks. Whatever at this point I just want it looked at so I agree. i bring the car in and I am greeted by Chassidy who I guess works in the service department but shouldn't. Gets in the car with me so I can show her the noise, she claimed she knows exactly what's wrong, some bullshit about a heat plate being put in wrong and says it's an easy fix. Later they call saying they don't recognize the noise and neither does Nissan but there is a notice from Nissan saying if clicking is heard from the front end that the protocol from Nissan is to lubricate all the balljoints and brake pads. Chassidy claims everything was lubricated and assured me that all those sounds are normal and Nissans are loud like that. I get in the car and drive home, same noises even worse at this point. I'm furious at this point. I call and speak to Chassidy again after She states there is nothing wrong with it as her mechanics looked it over and againis still saying these noises are normal. She claims I can have it sent to Nissan for another opinion. At this point my father calls corporate CarMax in Virginia as he is just as pissed off as me. This lady listens to my father and then gives me a call. She calls and apologizes for all this and says she wants to make this right and basically begs me to bring the car back and have it looked at again and they will send it to Nissan. She insists to please bring it back in and they will re look at it. Soo again I bring the car in and they send it to George Harte Nissan who they are in contract with (warning flag). Chassidy calls me later saying Nissan relubricated everything and theres no more noise, She confirms noises are gone and the only noises we hear are normal car noises. I go pick up the car after work, rush to get there as they were closing. I get in the car and guess what Still making the same damn noises. I drive right into the service department and confront chassidy who's laughing saying I don't know what you think your hearing. She gets in and again laughs saying this is normal noises. I told her I do not want this cAr anymore and you guys did nothing to fix it . She laughs and says well Nissans are loud you should have bought a Kia like me. She told me to call and see what can be done as in over my 7 days grace period. 3 days later Julius who claimed to be some big shot from east haven calls and basically bullshits me saying it's been to Nissan and they would charge CarMax for anything to fix one little thing then they would have but there's nothing wrong with the car and the noises are normal. He claims they can try to look at numbers and see what the buy back numbers would be if I brought the car back.I told him I am basically stuck with the car cuz I'm going to get screwed even more if I bring it back. He keeps getting offended saying stop saying I'm stuck with it as it offends him and sounds terrible when I say it. I told him it's the truth. He also begins to tell me to never have my father call or come to CarMax again especially since my name is on the car and they can't talk to him, saying they did not like how he talked to them. Julius talked over me and told me I need to make a decision and I need to let him know and once again told me not to say I'm stuck with it. At this point I'm disgusted with how he talked to me and told him I need to think about all this. He said he would be in contact either way. We purchased a vehicle from Carmax last month. When we brought the car home, we found out that one of the key fobs sold with the vehicle does not work. We were not informed in advance that the key fob was broken, and were given both keys at the same time to test drive the vehicle, masking the issue. When we contacted carmax, we were told that this does not violate their policy because we were given one working key fob, despite the car being advertised with and provided with two key fobs. They shared that they are only required to provide one working fob. This is a terrible business practice and very deceptive. They shared that if reprogramming it does not work we will now have to replace the key fob, spending more money for a car purchased 4 weeks ago. They have not yet provided a copy of their key fob policy despite multiple requests. Check oil light also came on after less than 500 miles added to the car. They did not do their due diligence in preparing the car for resale. We have bought multiple used cars in the past from other dealerships and never had any of these issues. read more

The atmosphere was more than depressing. Bright lights loud music. I felt like we were waiting to be interrogated for something. It was painful. The staff was even more disgusting. There are employees walking around doing absolutely nothing while you wait hour after hour to get your paperwork completed and get the hell out of there. We arrived and they said the wait would be 35-40 minutes. After an hour we inquired and again they said 35-40 minutes. We were annoyed but foolishly waited again. Finally we inquired a third time and a good few hours into this experience and they said 40 minutes They were apathetic and had no regard for the overly long wait. It was not that they were understaffed (which can happen) They had way more employees than customers. But their employees were all chatting it up with each other, or walking around or playing with their hair. One woman kept getting up and dancing to the obnoxiously loud music playing. They were not only NOT working but when they were, they were incompetent. They had to reprint the check a couple times because they put the paper in the printer incorrectly.. They had to reprint the paperwork, too, and we were told there was a long wait at the printer so it would be awhile. 3 people to do 1 job. The woman working with us couldn't have been less interested. I think she was actually half asleep. She couldn't get the key board to work so they had to replace that too in the middle of getting this job done. Honestly it is not worth the few extra dollars they gave us for our car. We actually just about broke even with what we would have gotten with a trade in. Remember one thing. When you do a trade in, you also save on taxes for the final price of the newer car as they reduce the price with the trade-in price factored in. I was originally going to go with Carvana but I thought maybe Carmax will be better because they have been around for much longer. But that was a huge mistake. Initially everything went smoothly. They made me buy insurance, send them documents and do a credit check on me. And the car was supposed to be delivered yesterday. And nothing happened, nobody called me or anything. Every time I called CarMax I had to go through many transfers to get to some sales person in some other state who will tell me different story on what happened. Some person would say that they are busy so they cannot do home delivery, another would say that the documents are incomplete, and yet another would say they cannot deliver to my home address, etc. After my 6th call within last 4 hours, they said they don't have the car anymore because they started the transfer to another customer. I hope that customer has better experience than mine. In they end, CarMax cost me money for both the insurance and doing multiple credit checks on me. Needless to say I am not going to even think about buying a car with CarMax again. Note that every time you call CarMax, you have to talk to some general customer service person and go over the order history (15 minutes at least). There is no way to get to East Haven CT store. CarMax's prices are significantly inflated over the Kelley Blue Book value. They sold me a 2013 Subaru Forester with 52000 miles on it. I took it to my mechanic and it needed a new fan belt on the engine, a new battery, and new front and rear brakes. That's $880 worth of repairs, immediately after paying an already-too-high price. I took it back, they re-inspected it, and they said it passed their inspection. I believe it is bad business to charge that kind of money for a car with 52,000 miles and original brakes. They will not go the extra mile for their customers. They care about profit, and not customer satisfaction. Luckily, they have a five-day window during which time you can change your mind and return the car. They know there are plenty of suckers out there who, because it is convenient, will overpay for a car. Please do not buy a car at CarMax unless you want to overpay. Now it's one year later.
