I've never been to CarMax before because of their reputation of no price negotiation. I decided to check them out to look at an SUV advertised. I never made it to a test drive because the car was dirty & had signs of being used for something other than someone's personal vehicle. If you can't recondition a car you should never sell it. The salesman was pleasant but lukewarm when I complained about the dirty car. Last month around the time of the quarantine starting I had gotten a price quote on my vehicle. The offer was for 10k and was very fair. I had every intention of closing the deal with them in my 7 day time frame. Unfortunately the location closed the day before my 7 days were up. I went back today, the first day they opened since shutting down. They stated that they needed to re appraise the vehicle, I thought It was fair, 5 weeks is awhile for something to happen that may lower its value. Everything was the exact same minus a few additional miles. They came back with an offer for $500 less than the original offer, I politely contested due to not being able to take advantage of the full 7 days due to the company completely shutting down. The reason I was given was "market has changed" completely disregarding the fact that I wasn't able to fully utilize my window of time. Later that evening I was ready to sell and I had my wife make the same request, a young lady that took her concern saw no issue with it, like any normal person its not an outlandish request. The sales manager Korey beam lined at us to make a point. Had an extremely defensive stance and treated my like a crook for daring to ask again. After that Korey proceeded to yell at the employee who approved giving us the original offer, belittling her making sure she knew he had the biggest dick in the room. I am in retail specialty sales and worked throughout this entire unprecedented event. I had to make a lot of unusual comprises over the past month and a half to take care of my customers. What I went through yesterday was a total shit show from the leadership at the Carmax. I felt like yall kicked me when I was down and robbed me for $500. read more

My wife and I had sold a vehicle at this store before and it was quick and easy. We talked with a customer service representative over the phone and had picked a vehicle out but it needed to shipped to the Hulen store. It arrived on December 17th, 2020 and we went and did all the paperwork for it and drove home. 5 days after having signed the paperwork I noticed the coolant temperature rather high on the 22nd of December. It was at 254 while driving down the hwy. I called and made appointment for them to look at it. I also told them to look at the AC and check the alignment as it was surely out. They gave us a rental and said they would fix it. As they should. Not only were the thermostats bad. But the alignment was out as well as the AC compressor.. today the 8th of January I get a call from the service representative saying the compressor they ordered is bad.... im sorry where did you get that refurbished compressor from?? So they've had my 2014 dodge journey since the 26th of December. A car that I thought was a sound vehicle for my wife to drive. It's been in the damn shop for more than we've drove it. I want to know who looked this vehicle over and checked off that it was good to go and safe to drive because obviously they just penciled whipped the check list. Stand up company or so I thought. I hate doing reviews like these because I know there's always good/non bias people in any business but I also feel obligated to share my experience with the rest for future warning. I visit this Carmax today interested in a Jeep Wrangler and wanting to test drive it. My mom and I walked into an uninviting environment. The first guy we met with eye contact in the front that was NOT busy did not greet us whatsoever, he was an older caucasian guy with mid length hair who we later found out was the manager. The guy standing next to him was Latino guy with short hair who also didn't greet us but instead we got challenged to a stare off. We had to assist ourselves most of the time we were in the business. After taking the initiative to go look at the cars outside for ourselves no one still greeted or initiated contact to help. After walking back in I approached the older gentleman (manager) and before being able to finish my sentence (trying to get help) he gives the finger as to "hush" me because he wanted to talk the Latino guy before helping me. When engaging in conversation with him he was rude and condescending. The Latino gentlemen just kept staring as if we "Walking while being BLACK" was illegal. We felt totally out of place and mistreated. For my African-American folks hopefully your experience is better as I know everyone is not this WAY! BEWARE! I would run and take my sale/hard earned money to another CarMax that value and appreciates EVERY CUSTOMER that walks through those doors! Very negative experience and distasteful! I must say the process started off hectic but Karen made up for it. Between her and Ashley they made the rest of the process amazing. Unfortunately that was short lived I made it home and two lights were on on the dash so I dropped it off at 8 on Thursday well I'm being told I can pick it up sometime on Friday yes sometime on Friday. Of course I called and spoke with Kelley in services since I was told it was only a matter of Lincoln resetting the electronic dash if I could get a better time frame well now I'm being told after 4:30 on Friday. So I've had my car a total of 3 days and it's been in the shop for 2 just to simply reset an electronic dash smh. I'm glad that I'm not paying for this because it would be costing me an arm and a leg but I guess that's also why my cars at the bottom of the list of importance. My wife and I purchased a 2011 Chrysler Town & Country minivan on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016 and then returned a week later to trade in our older minivan and submit payment for the 2001 Town & Country. The service we received throughout that process was personable and great. We were particularly impressed by Rachel Benford, our sales consultant. It was after closing hours by the time we finished purchase arrangements on Friday, Sept. 2, but she never seemed tired or impatient. The following Friday - Sept. 9 - we returned to submit payment and trade in our older minivan. That was supposed to be Rachel's day off, but she came in to help us again and wish us well. I hope it will be many years before we need to purchase another vehicle. When the time comes for such a purchase, though, we'll be thinking of this CarMax location again. read more

Went to look at a car yesterday and the sales lady was very friendly. After talking I decided to go ahead and get my car appraised just for giggles to see what I can get. My car has an aftermarket AEM cold air intake and a axle back exhaust, I was standing outside on the phone when a lady and a guy went outside to apprise a couple cars. The lady working fired my car up and went to go for a test drive she pulled out of the parking spot and stop and revved it up really good with a one two punch. That was fine you need to make sure the car sounds good and healthy which it is/was. After she drove back she parked it up and I heard her rev it up again and then got out the car and did the walk around of taking pictures of everything and so on. The dude who was out there finished up the other car and headed over to my car where the lady started revving my car again as the dude popped the hood and started laughing. I understand having to get on it on the test drive to make sure it flows through the gears and revving it to make sure the engine is smooth but it's very unprofessional to just be sitting in someone's car revving it over and over. I will not be coming back to this carmax when it's time for me to shop for a new vehicle. read more

I'm actually really glad that I waited to write this review. We purchased a car, 3 years old with fairly low mileage about 5 weeks ago. It comes with a 30 day warranty and we purchased the extended warranty through Carmax. Had a pretty decent buying experience and I was sure that we would be returning in the future when we needed another car. Weeellllll, on the 34th day after we purchased the car the remote start stops working and the next day the check engine light comes on. 2 issues.....first, OBVIOUSLY something was going on with the car before we bought it. They bandaided it enough for it to get through the 30 days so then we have to give them $150 for the deductible for whatever in the world is wrong with the car. Second, their service department isn't open on Saturdays, you know, because no-one works during the week and everyone can just take time out to go to the service department during banker hours. I returned a lease, not buying it because it was having problems choosing instead to buy this car that's now having problems. So we've pretty much decided that we will stick to dealerships from now on. However much of a pain they are to deal with at least I could have taken my Chevrolet to the dealership TODAY and had it repaired with no money out of pocket. If I've had a vehicle for a year, ok fine, have to spend money to keep it going. But before I've even made the first payment on the stupid thing, um no! So steer clear, go to any dealership and deal directly with them. read more

I bought my car here I thought I got a great deal on it, only 4,800 miles on a 2016 and since then I've only added 5,000 miles on it. I came back because my breaks didn't work and I almost crashed. They said that it wasn't their problem and ignored it, but they could repaint my bumper still so I left my car with them. MY MISTAKE. They sent my car out to the hundai dealership for my breaks without my consent or knowledge and are now trying to charge me $160 just to figure out what's wrong with my breaks. I asked for my car back and they offered me a loaner and that they would figure out what's wrong with my car. So I come in when they tell me to and my car is still not here and they are also saying they can't give me a loaner car because my license is in my car that they sent out without my consent ??? I've bought multiple used cars from various Carmax locations, and purchased one this week. I am decreasingly satisfied with this business, and am unlikely to spend any more money there. I found a vehicle I liked, but there was a noticeable gash in the paint several inches long on a side door. When I asked if that could be touched up, the sales rep said it was an acceptable defect, and they wouldn't be fixing it. They also tell you that you have 3 days to potentially find other financing that may have a better APR, but the process to do that is not good. They make it difficult to pursue other financing. This latest transaction has really left a bad taste, and will be the last time I'll use them. They really aren't very interested in satisfying reasonable customer requests. I've given a very generous rating of 2 stars. read more

Just want to give everyone a heads up about the service department there. BE SURE they understand why you are bringing your car in for service. Took my car in for service and they completely ignored the original issue. Instead they found several other issues to fix (under warranty) but not the original issue. I understand the more they find the more they can charge the warranty for. When i went back after the repairs were completed (two weeks later) the bumper support was hanging loose, and different color lug nuts were on the car. I understand the car was taken to the Chevy house for repair but Carmax was "cleaning" my car before i picked it up. If they were cleaning it how did the bumper support hanging loose get missed? When i asked the tech about fixing it he seemed annoyed i would ask, and after it was fixed the duct work inside was left loose and rattling around. I took the car and got stuck at a store because the FOB's were not recognized, this was the original issue!!! When i got the car started i returned to drop the car off again to get it fixed. The tech told me that's not what the car was dropped off for, WHAT?!?!?! i asked him to read the front page of the issue they recorded when the car was dropped off, it stated "customer reported car not recognizing the key FOB" to which he replied "we didn't have a problem with that, it worked here". Next i asked him to read page three of the report Carmax printed, he refused. I told him the third page said "tech noted car displayed message that FOB is not recognized "he replied "we didn't fix the car the Chevy house did". i said OK well i need to drop the car off again to get it fixed and i don't expect to pay another deductible. He said "I cant help you with that" WHAT!?!?! I asked him so you are telling me because YOU did not fix or get my car fixed correctly the first time i had to pay another deductible? He replied "that's between you and the warranty company" WHAT!?!?! so i said you are not willing to help me? He replied no you need to take the car to the Chevy house they fixed it not us "this is not our problem" WHAT!?!?!. I took the car to the Chevy house and was told Carmax never reported the issue with the FOB. WOW!! The Chevy house was able to repair the car in 1 day, under the original ticket, the tech at the Chevy house never once thought that it would not be covered and he was very helpful. I am not writing this to get anything nor do i want to be contacted by Carmax i just wanted to inform anyone thinking about buying a car from this place google reviews (I wish I had) and look how people are treated post sale. read more

I wish I could post a video. I had looked at a couple of vans a few days before, and was able to immediately look at them. I came back with my wife, daughter and two small grandkids. My original salesperson greeted us and said there would be a short wait. In the next HOUR (60 minutes) we watched my original salesperson and others sit, chat and meander. About the video ... I actually have footage of a guy inside an office whose large window immediately faces the waiting area. While he leans back and talks on the phone he repeatedly bounces a ball against the wall above the window. You can hear it hit the wall from our seats. I sometimes expect this kind of wait at a doctor's office, but is business really so good in the auto business that they can force buyers to sit and sit and sit just to have the privilege of talking to a salesperson? Carmax will always be the place for me and my family. From my experience, the entire process has been transparent, professional and eye opening when selecting a vehicle. After purchasing a car for my teenage daughter, we saw a puff of smoke after she drove off but had to take it back to get it serviced. Happy about the temporary loaner for the teenager so that was a smooth transition. You would think the car was at a daycare center, because we were daily kept abreast of the condition of the car and the next step when it was being serviced. The mechanical problem was so minor in that it gave us a reassurance about the quality of the car that was specifically chosen just for our daughter. Have a 2017 Lincoln MKX that I wanted to sell. Called Carmax to schedule an "appointment" at 11am the next day for a pricing quote. Drove 2 hours and arrived at the dealership at 10:55am and told the front desk I was here for my "appointment". Front desk informed me that my scheduled time was not an "appointment" per se, but just a place in line, which completely takes the "point" out of "appointment". Front desk said someone would be with us in 15 minutes or less. We took our seats at the nearest table from the front desk. No one ever attempted to assist us in any way much less give us a price quote. At 11:18 we hit the door and drove 2 hours home, needless to say, no body attempted to stop us or assist us. Terrible business practice to require an appointment and then have no employees available to keep that appointment. Wasted half a day driving. Done with Carmax. read more
