CarMax makes it super easy to either buy or sell cars. I just sold one there, and it took less than an hour. The first thing they do is appraise it. That took less than 30 minutes, and they offered me right in the middle of the range I was looking for. I had checked out Kelly Blue Book for my car's value, so was ready to accept anything within the range they had given me. The offer is good for 7 days, so you have a little bit of time to think about it, or sell it some other way if you think you can get more. I didn't have the title yet the first time they appraised it, so by the time I did that the 7 days had expired, and I had about 500 more miles on it. Went back and had it reappraised, and they came back with the same offer again. I took it and was out of there with a bank draft (deposit only) within another 20 minutes. Easy peasy! read more

Buying experience was great- Salesman worked hard to find what I was looking for and walked me through every step of the purchase with integrity and without that "salesman" mentality I was hoping to avoid. Very pleased with the car- Further, have ha d minor issue and they have been incredibly supportive thus far in getting it resolved. The only problem I've had with this current service (they have the car overnight to resolve a check engine issue) is that the loaner they've given me (great service!!!!) is disgusting... smells like cigars and ammonia.. bah. I decided to visit carmax just to see & give car purchasing one final try. My salesman - bobby was amazing. He was so nice and patient with my dad and I. He showed me vehicles in my price range and even took the time to show me some other vehicles that I may be interested in. He even showed me parts of the vehicle that I didn't even know to look for. I was impressed by his sincerity but completely floored by how quickly he entire process was. Within 20 minutes, I was approved and my car was taken off the lot to be cleaned. So thankful for carmax! I had a good experience with CarMax in 2010 when I bought my last vehicle so I went back for the replacement. Overall the experience was good, however the salesman that was supposed to handle the deal was only present for about a total of 10 minutes and completely blew off one of my requests. I wanted to pick up the truck on a Friday evening, but he didn't remember the change, and we had to go to a back up sales rep. It was only then that we found out that there was a mechanical issue with the truck, and we wouldn't be able to get it till the following Monday. I feel like he wasted my Friday evening, since he didn't remember I was coming in, therefore didn't make sure there weren't any issues. I feel if he had been taking care of the customer, he would have known of the issue and been able to contact me to reschedule. Overall, the process and truck are great, but one salesman kinds let me way down. read more

The absolute worst experience I have had purchasing a vehicle. I do not recommend using Carmax for your next vehicle purchase. My newest vehicle has spent the last month in the shop more than I have been able to drive it and the check engine light is on again this morning after being assured many times after the last 5 times that they had completely fixed the problem. So frustrating frustrating to decide to make a purchase and then spend the next month regretting every minute of it. So now I'm looking for a good attorney. read more

First Carmax in Charlotte sells us a car with a missing fuse and leaking power steering fluid; take it to the Carmax on Wendover for a "2 hour" repair only to be left sitting for 3 hours before I was told they needed to order a part. We were told first my car would be ready today, then maybe, now they are sayiing the breaks are bad on the car??? Of course we do not get a call until almost 5:00 this evening telling us now they need my car until Friday. What makes me almost as mad as Carmax selling a car with serious issues (so much for Carmax checking all of their cars completely) is the fact that I bought a Lincoln MKX and Carmax puts me in a smelly bottom of the line Kia for a loaner!! Strarted off good our salesman was Davante i spoke to him he said we were ready to go I told him we would be there friday about 6.He could me thursday to say he couldnt find the offer and lost our information I had to give it to him again.Then all the same offers didnt come back he said he would call me back within 5 minutes .He finally called me back a hour and a half latter said he had it we were good to go.He said he would call me friday after he test drove it and got it ready.I never recieved a call I called him when i was on my wayhe said we were all set .I asked him what if anything he needed from me .He said we were all set we just needed to test drive and sign .we got there right after 6 he brought us to his office and as id lets get started he pulled up the offer and said i needed to give him 3 months of bank statements.I said you told me i didnt need anything i told him i asked him 3 times .He never answered .He said i could get on from his computer he tried and i and we couldnt get on.I said I wasgoing to the rest room and then i would like to see his manager.When i got back from the rest room he was no where to be found .My wife said she had not seen him.About 15 minutes latter he walks bye.I say whats going on he said i thought you were leaving.I said where is your manager .He said he was outside .I said could you please get him .He said he busy I said well please get him finally one of the managers comes with a sales person named odessa .The gentleman said he heard i didnt want to work with Davante .I said know i just wanted to speak to the manager.odessa was great she took my wife for a test drive Davante did not have the car ready for a test drive .Odessa finally found the car then it had no gas.lmao afterthat they had a test drive it went greatat 9pm 3 hours from when we got there we were oicking up our car Davante wssback there cleaning cars .he never said hello im sorry or anyting he just stared at me.If it wasnt for odessa we would noy of done this deal.This was our 2 nd purchase with car max plus we should a car to them.This will probably be our last. read more

If you don't want to know, stop reading now. I would have to say that the experience needed help. I had been in the market for a Sierra 3500 for some time. Saw the truck on the web and called to make sure it was available. Drove an hour and a half to test drive. The salesman (Clay) did a fairly good job of talking and helping me through the process of the purchase. It was a cloudy day and getting late in the PM when we looked at the truck. Everything looked OK with the exception of a small issue that the cap to the air condition port was missing. Was told by Clay that it wasn't a problem and one would be sent. We also noticed that the Park Assist was blocked but wrote it off to the dealer tag hanging from the rear tailgate. Wrote a check for the vehicle and drove it home. No wash job because their bay was too small and the local car wash was broken. Anyway, got home and the next day drove to work. Noticed that evening that the rear bumper had minor damage. Also noted on the way home that the front end had a shimmy. Checked front tire and found feathering on the treads. Drove it to work the next day and had a check engine light come on. Transfer to service at Lynchburg, VA Carmax. Took truck in to be looked at after multiple calls to service with NO answer. The branch couldn't even look at my vehicle for a week and a half. Far past my 5 day money back guarantee. Explained the situation to the manager, Malika who did an excellent job of putting my mind at ease and assuring me that she would set it up to have the local GM dealership look at and repair to my satisfaction. The dealership also advised that the rear bumper had been "Hit", the front end was out of alignment, the front license plate holder was not OEM and was installed blocking the air intake for the transmission cooler and the module for the back-up sensors was bad, plus the check engine light was related to a DEF tank heater issue. Dealership worked hard to fix issues but was told that they could not replace the front tires by Lynchburg service department at Carmax, as they "Met Carmax's standard". Once again a visit with Malika who handled the entire issue with complete professionalism put my mind at ease about the tires being replaced. Carmax agreed to have a new OEM license plate holder installed, but I was left with a front bumper with holes in it due to the one removed. Salesman was called and stated that it wasn't installed by Carmax, probably previous owner. Look at the picture! I doubt it. Morale of the story. Not everything was noticed or fixed by me or Carmax. Look closely at what you buy. Be prepared for the stress involved in getting it resolved. I have a truck that has holes in the front bumper and a damaged rear bumper on a vehicle that was "Certified" to not have been in an accident. I bought a vehicle that passed a 125 point inspection (yeah, right) that had a bad alignment job and bad front tire, a bad park assist module and a failed DEF tank heater within 36 hours of purchase. and.... I still don't have the cap for my air condition connection. Bought the extended warranty and am offered a $50 discount to bring it to Carmax for repairs. I'll pay the extra $50 to keep it out of Carmax! Two star review ONLY because of Malika in Lynchburg!!! read more

When I first got my car from these guys 3 years ago the service department was extremely communicative, helpful, and timely. In the most recent months it has really been a chore to get my car serviced under my extended warranty. I understand it can be busy but what I have noticed is that the communication skills, friendliness and timelessness has severely dropped. There is one new guy who works there and I believe he is one of the main issues named Barney. I unfortunately have to deal with Barney every time I have gone in. Number 1 and I am usually not so nit-picky but he needs to brush his teeth or something. His breath reeks. Number two it seems like he wants to charge me for ridiculous things and I had to argue with him until the mechanic standing there told him he was wrong and he suddenly charged me less. Basically I had my AC serviced months before this and he wanted to charge me to look at it again when I knew the problem was an electrical issue which it turned out was true. It was the cabin Fan system not my AC. I had to take it in twice for them to finally discover that. During these two repairs I was told I would receive a phone call to update me and I ended up waiting all the way until 3pm (I work 7-5 so I have to have my car by the time I leave work other wise I would have been stranded) I had to call them and ask them what in the world was going on. This is another issue with this location. They now have problems answering the phone or getting to the phone to explain the diagnostic. For example I got a voicemail 3 seconds ago when I check my phone and call back immediately and no one answers the phone and when they finally do Barney was no where to be found for 3 hours. This location has really gone downhill and It honestly has become a hassle to get my car serviced there. I don't even get sent a service survey anymore. I was waiting for that to come to my email but of course it never came this time after a horrible experience so i am posting here and to their website. Edit: they called me after they saw this and cleared somethings up. I also had a great experience the very day I posted this message. Those 2 incidents were clearly isolated. Service department of carmax is the worst. when I bought my car, I decided to get extended warranty. I paid off my car in one year. when it comes time to service the car, they kept my car for over a week and refused to give me a rental car which is part of the warranty. WARNING do not buy your car at CarMax!! they are overpriced. there are other companies and car dealerships that are willing to work with people with less than perfect credit. read more

Upon finding a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit online that fit the parameters of my search, I contacted Carmax and got Anthony on the line. Anthony was the nicest salesperson I had met during my search so I was encouraged. I explained to him the vehicles specs were exactly in line with what I was looking for, as was the price, but the pictures on the website were washed out and difficult to see detail. He offered to go look at the vehicle himself and report back. When Anthony called back he said that the vehicle looked to be in great condition and then sent me another obscure picture from his camera phone. I explained that I was a very particular person and I would be driving from 5 hours away, he assured me that it was worth it. I was impressed the next morning with Anthony called and asked how our drive was coming and let me know he was headed into work early to meet us. Everything seemed to be going great... until... we got there. The outside of the vehicle was clean as a whistle and in great shape... but the inside... dear God... it looked like vehicle had been used to ship angry, feral cats. The entire inside was dirty with trash and dirt throughout the vehicle, foot prints on seats, tears in the leather, and extremely faded leather. I looked at him and said "Are you serious with this?!" To which he responded, "Well, it does have 40,000 miles." 40,000 miles?! This thing looked like it was used as a taxi for 250,000 miles! The thing is, for the price, it would have been an okay buy for someone that knew what they were getting. But this was a 2014 top-of-the-line model that was destroyed on the inside. Anthony knew we were making a 10 hour drive and didn't have the courtesy to say "Hey man, the inside is a little ragged out, before you drive that far, you should know that." The reality is, that's exactly why they put hard to see pictures online, because this thing looked terrible. Anthony showed no remorse and didn't even bother making any alternative suggestions. 10 hours of driving and 40 seconds at this Carmax. Shame on your Carmax for pulling a bait-and-switch and shame on your Anthony for being a liar. read more

You'd do better going to a traditional car lot. From pricing to financing there is nothing worth the effort at this place. I had purchased a family car a week prior (from a traditional lot) and I'm sure you're wondering why would I go to Carmax for another car. They happened to have had the "weekend" car I'd been looking for, life is too short not to treat yourself. MISTAKE, I have never been more angry after an exchange with an establishment claiming to be a "no hassle" business. Hassle from start to finish. The "manager" told me to my face that my income looks suspicious because he didn't understand my paystub. Apparently, I don't pay taxes? I'm sorry but as an American the only thing we are guaranteed is death and taxes. Nor did he put forth any effort to actually read the fine print of the bank they were trying to force on me (they won't show you all the banks). I feel it was more about how they perceived me and not about the financials. Too young to have a BMW but old enough to be able to afford one. To Carmax- please don't supply me another lame, generic, "well it's just policy" response. If someone was willing to blow $30K-$40k+ I'd shut up and figure it out. P.S. if you have a trade-in you'd make more junking it than with Carmax. read more
