Sometimes come here as a guest to watch tennis matches. Nice facility with lots of trees and you feel remote in a good way. The staff are always friendly here (even if you're a guest). There are two areas for courts so if you're not on the outer edge to use the restroom you need to go to the front desk to walk through gym area to use restroom. Just ask and they will let you use. There are two sections for parking as well the front and the back (near the outer edge courts) There's not much surrounding this area so keep in mind in case you're visiting - the last time I came their cafe was closed and I had to drive off for lunch and come back as the tennis matches I was watching were doubled up for the day. Very tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. Weight Room: Good gym/weights; there are plenty of machines and enough weights to make it challenging. Plenty of room to do your exercises and it's never too busy; bonus is the terrace/deck upstairs where you can take a breather between sets and admire the serene setting. Pool: great for kids, been there plenty and never had anyone complain. There are two hot tubs, a family and an adult. The swim lanes are nice, but I guess can get a bit busy I don't really play tennis (yet), but there lots of courses and thy never look too busy. I had a very disappointing encounter with Mitsuko. She is very condescending (when you understand what she is saying, which is not often). She was downright insulting and I will never return to this place again. I get treated very well by other exercise/tennis clubs in the area. I am not a confrontational person and did not say anything directly to her. In hindsight I should have, because she should know when she's crossing the line. I really hope that CVAC chooses more wisely who comes in direct contact with the customers. The fires in the waiting area and outside give off noxious smells. I would not consider exercising in an environment with such poor air quality. read more

This is an update to my original post of Carmel Athletic Club. It has been sometime but when the new manager took over they started to lite wood fires in an area of the club the smoke would go into the gym and tennis courts where people are working out. One day when I was promised they weren't going to have fires anymore the new manager told someone to lite the fire which sent me to the ER for an asthmatic attack. Also a couple overnight stays at the hospital. I am still trying to collect in the trouble the put me through. Excellent tennis program and not much else. We were members for two years. We thoroughly enjoyed the tennis program, if I could give a separate 5 star rating for Brian and Alice and their tennis clinics and lessons, I certainly would. I would not recommend this club for families. This is not a club that welcomes children, it perhaps tolerates children and families but there is a palpable sense that they do not want children there. I witnessed and experienced hostility towards children at the pool by older members on more than one occasion. There was very little support from management on this matter. Attempting to book pool time became nearly impossible via their online portal during Covid. Requests for assistance with this were dismissed. Once at the pool your subject to questioning, absolutely zero customer service. Are we members or fugitives? Half of the reason for our family membership was for use of the pool facilities, now we not only can't readily sign up for pool time but when we arrive we are treated like criminals, did you sign up? When? Do you have your confirmation? Was it for family pool or for a lane? It created this high security atmosphere, having staff patrol and question. High turnover at the front desk. During Covid my non member friend could not play on a court with me BUT she could attend a clinic..... no response when I inquired on that ridiculous policy, pick one, either they can or can't be on the courts. On one occasion I was playing on the courts on a Saturday morning and a vagrant who appeared to be intoxicated came out of the clearing and walked across the courts talking to himself, carrying all sorts of gear, helped himself to water, relieved himself in the bushes, three of us were using our cell phones to try and alert the front desk, no answer. One ran up to the office, no one was at the desk. This was brought to managements attention, you guessed it, no response, no reassurance. Very poor upper level management, which trickles down. It is unfortunate because the location and facilities are lovely but the service is mediocre at best and should you ever actually need something..... don't hold your breath. Since leaving the club and taking with families at other clubs, apparently I was out of the loop this whole time, CVAC has a reputation of being less that family friendly and any serious concerns brought to managements attention are immediately turned around on the individual who dared bring it to their attention. I viewed a few emails from CVAC management and was shocked at their lack of professionalism and complete disregard customer oriented thinking, in writing! Perhaps older members have a different experience, we met many lovely older members who were warm and welcoming, especially on the tennis courts. If older members do not have these experiences, then perhaps that would be a better direction for CVAC to take as a business model, a 55 and up club would make sense and might fit the managements vision better. If that is the case, then commit to that and stop taking money from families. We looked at CV Ranch and Pasadera, both were fabulous alternatives for families. They have separate family pools where kids can swim and play freely, there's music playing in the afternoons, your food orders are brought to you. Adults have a separate lap pool...imagine that... they are accommodating their member populations needs. We moved clubs and used the pool facilities 15 times in the first 3 months. That was more than we were able to use at CVAC in a year! Our kids absolutely bloomed with the freedom to play and splash and not worry. Lots of family oriented events and great tennis and golf. If you are a family looking for a club, I strongly recommend touring everywhere before committing to CVAC. read more

My husband and I have recently become members at CVAC. We both look forward to going there everyday.! So many great amenities. We love the warm pool and therapeutic jacuzzi. Friendly members, staff and environment. Top of the line equipment. Thoughtful and functional layout. Omar is an excellent personal trainer. His enthusiasm and diverse knowledge of health and fitness has inspired me to get healthy and back in shape! My husband is impressed with Antonio's stretch class. This gym is awesome! The Staff and housekeeping is super friendly and they keep the place spotless. The place is laid out well so it never feels crowded. I visited this club recently with a week pass to try out the facilities. I thought the lobby entrance and workout area was very attractive, and that the person that showed me around very helpful. However, I wanted to find a club with a good pool for swimming and this is not the place for that if you are a serious lap swimmer. The pool was built more for physical appearance than functionality. The lap lanes are part of a larger pool/hot tub pool, where children are left to float into the lap lanes while you are head down doing laps. The temperature of the water is supposedly 82 degrees, already very warm if you want to have a proper cool down while swimming, but it felt much warmer. Probably because a 103 degree hot tub has a small water fall spilling into the pool, just adjacent to the lap lanes. The chemical system uses a saline-based system, which allows for less chlorine. However, it has some by-products that caused a big reaction for me, someone who is used to swimming in chlorinated pools. The day after I swam in this pool, I was close to getting a cortisone injection to stop the itching and redness. What is more difficult to understand, is that I mentioned this to the management by email, and they did not respond in any fashion. The facility is undergoing some interesting construction changes, including a water environment with several small pools, none of which will be useful for exercising. The current locker room is a small portable facility, like a large mobile home, and is not very comfortable or well-appointed. Again, if the pool is not important to you for all-out lap swimming, and you can stand the chemical by-products in the pool, this place would probably work. read more

I did a lot of research in gyms prior to joining CVAC last year. I wanted to make sure I was getting all of the things I looked for in a gym before signing an annual contract anywhere. While CVAC is somewhat pricier than the average "gym" here in the area, it is FAR SUPERIOR to any gym we've ever belonged to. You definitely get what you pay for. I joined for several reasons: I wanted a clean facility that offered swimming, hot yoga and childcare. I also wanted to join a club that actually made me WANT TO GO! CVAC offers all of these and the facility is beyond amazing. The pool has lap lanes and a general area for open swim as well as two large hot tubs (one for families, one for adults). The setting is like an oasis and my husband and I liked to just go and sit by the fire pits or in the clubhouse relaxing, having coffee, whether or not we actually exercised that day! The surrounding valley views are breathtaking and honestly, I felt like i was on vacation every time I went! There are MANY great classes offered, including HOT yoga and reformer pilates and all but the reformer and small group classes are included in the monthly fee. The childcare facility and staff are wonderful-it is clean, open, with lots of playing area and the staff is just terrific-both of our kids loved going! They also do a parents night each month which is a wonderful bonus! The locker rooms are very nice, with steam room and sauna and it is always VERY clean. There is tennis if you choose to purchase that plan (we didn't but it's really not much more if you do) and there were always lots of opportunities for family members of all ages to get involved in the tennis facility with camps or matches. Also it is on the same property as Refuge and your membership includes discount entrance to Refuge if you really want to pamper yourself. As far as price goes, yes, it is more expensive than your run of the mill gym in a strip mall. However, if you want a true, peaceful and meaningful and ENJOYABLE club experience, it is well worth the price and a pretty good deal. Our family would just enjoy spending a day there, swimming, having a delicious lunch (the restaurant is AMAZING-Chef Moises is awesome). I considered our monthly fees easily justifiable and well worth the price. It is less than a country club membership, but here there is no attitude, just a beautiful facility in a tranquil location with excellent exercise machines and terrific classes. We will be sad when we move because there is no gym like it where we are headed and that is a shame. It is more like a resort spa (with all the athletic amenities) than the average boring gym you will find anywhere else around here. read more

Members complained that we parked our RV for twenty minutes while we had lunch after our paid visit to the Refuge. There were at least a dozen open parking spaces available at the time. Definitely reflects poorly on the members and is an unwelcoming environment that I wouldn't want to be a part of. As an aside, this is a $120k RV and I could easily afford to be a member, but certainly would not consider it after this encounter. read more

I have been a member for two years and LOVE this club! My tennis instructor Tisha is such a fabulous person and teacher. The club has finished their Pilates studio and it is amazing. All of the Pilates teachers are great but Kelly is amazing! She is ballet trained and is a brilliant teacher as well as being a wonderful person. I have not come across one staff member at CVAC that hasn't been helpful and pleasant. The club is beautiful, maintained impeccably, up to date equipment, fabulous pool, yummy cafe, and plenty of group classes at all hours to choose from......also it is located in such a gorgeous location. Not a family friendly club.... As much as I love the facility and the staff, it is simply not a family friendly club. I heard there were issues with the older swimmers sharing the pool with kids and didn't believe it but it is true. Several times it has been verbal harassment by different swimmers, but it culminated in a swimmer verbally harassing my 11 year old son and his friend, asking them personal questions, and physically pushing my son. My son ended his day at the club feeling unsafe and in tears. That said, the staff agreed this was inappropriate, was very kind to my son and responsive even to the point of trying to identify the man after he left the club. My husband, daughter and I have been members for several years. The staff is great and the facilities are clean and attractive. The members are friendly and cheerful. The parking is manageable if you use the auxiliary lot - no harm walking a few steps if you're there to work out. The reason for only 3 stars: It is disappointing that there are very few activities open to kids under 16. Family membership is not cheap, and kids are definitely 2nd class citizens. Just a few bathrooms open for their use, no yoga or fitness classes until they are 16. I would like to see at least 1 family friendly yoga class in the lineup. Another nice gesture would be a 2-3 special times a year when older kids are invited into the Refuge area with a parent and clear expectations for respectful behavior. The pool is fine for lap swimmers but 'play' swimming is limited to a small area. On the upside - very nice lap swimming set up and the recent reduced member satisfaction has eliminated wait time for lanes :-) One of the best things about the place is the Café - Chef Moises is a gem. I hope the new management can make some needed changes to support the families who support the bottom line. If nothing else, it seems like good business to cultivate the next generation. read more

Im a member here. Its really the only place to go unfortunately. Its ridiculously overpriced. The starting fee for a family membership seems like a joke...its not. The monthly fee is ridiculously high for what it has to offer at the moment. Especially since in order to get to it you currently have to take a detour for another 3 more months. On top of that, It costs $20 every time you bring in a guest...as if they weren't price gouging you enough already. In addition to that, they limit how often you can bring any one person in as a guest. in addition to the ridiculous cost, there are way too many people there most of the time and the poorly designed and set up upstairs gym is always packed full of old geezers who constantly give you dirty looks while your over in the corner squatting or deadlifting more then they ever could. Make sure you don't walk away from your equipment even if its just for a second because there's plenty of idiots that don't respect your workout that'll steal whatever your using. My favorite assholes are the ones who sit on the leg press, flat or incline bench, or hang around the cable area and talk for 45 minutes and ignore you if you try to ask them if you can use the equipment that they are draped over. Cvac, please invest in heavier dumbbells, a lying hamstring curl machine (none of that hydraulic bullshit you have now-preferably plate loaded), and 1 or 2 more benches for the dumbbells. Also, extend the upstairs gym to accomadate these things. U don't need 2 outdoor balcony's and a ledge overlooking the bottom floor when the gym is as tightly packed as it is. Extend the floor so it covers the huge area overlooking the bottom floor. And finally, stop burning down your buildings so that you can get insurance money... read more

This athletic club is perfect for families, mature adults, and senior citizens. The demographics strongly trend toward the active older crowd that is into tennis and swimming. Families with kids love the outdoor pool. Our 5 yo son loves the small Kids Club with its indoor and outdoor play space, and summer swimming lessons at the pool. My husband loves the outdoor tennis, and the staff helps match players up and there's frequent tennis workshops and tournaments. The separate building out back for yoga and aerobics stays busy too. I like the small but friendly area for cardio machines. Weights are upstairs in their own space. The cafe is putting out tasty food (salads, sandwiches, burgers) and puts on special dinners. My husband also likes the monthly poker night. This club is slightly expensive but has a great atmosphere that is cozy and clean. I just wish the locker rooms had towels available - you have to plan ahead and grab towels upfront at checkin, rather than towels being on hand by the showers. Family membership is roughly $200 per mo, and kids babysitting is $7.00/hr. Cafe is about $10.00 per meal. I belive individual membership is about $50-100/mo depending on whether you include the use of the Tennis courts. There is a sign - up fee unless you join during a special promotion. read more
