I joined this gym a year and a half ago after having my baby. I, an overweight new mom, was very intimidated by the CrossFit style workouts but decided to give this gym a try because they offered childcare for a reasonable rate but I stayed for the community! I joined and was quickly welcomed by the other gym members. The 9:30am class was truly a safe space without judgment where I could workout and learn the CrossFit movements. I was skeptical of all the glowing reviews, I'll admit. But I did the free trial and found every word here and on their website is sincere. As well as stellar coaches, my gym-mates, the real athletes, are so friendly and encouraging. It doesn't matter to anyone that I'm older than many of them, that I've still got weight to lose and need the options to scale the workouts. The coaches are warm and welcoming, and the vibe of the gym is definitely about being supportive of each person no matter their initial fitness level, and continually pushing them from there. I was in Monterey area visiting family for 5 weeks recently. As a 66 year old woman living with Multiple Sclerosis, I was feeling down as my walking and balance difficulties were progressing to the point where I seriously wondered how long I had. However, I remembered my UCSF doctor once said "Exercise is medicine!" I decided not to give in and emailed some local gyms to look for a personal trainer. Frank from First City emailed me back and thus began a 5 week journey back to wellness. When I told my son where I was going he said "Mom, Cross Fit??!!" What did I know? Well, Frank and First City did not care about my age or condition. With great music playing, I trained with him for an hour, 3 times a week. He developed a plan to take home with me that includes cardio, upper body and core strengthening, as well as leg strengthening and flexibility. Frank showed me patience, encouragement, knowledge and persistence. I told him "You saved my life!" and I mean it. I'm back home now and setting up a home gym based on Frank's lessons and plan. UPDATE!!! 4 months in and I feel great! On my way to being in the best shape of my life. Repeat, I feel great. And it is fun! a quick description of yesterday's workout: a 50 yard dash, followed with 3 dead lifts, followed with 6 medicine ball sit ups... every minute on the minute for 15 minutes. Everybody pushing it, high-fiving, FUN! If you're reading this, you may already have an idea of crossfit, so I'll focus on the First City Cross Fit staff and facilities. Frank, Erica, Kiara, Isaac- all knowledgeable, encouraging, and enthusiastic, and maybe most importantly, engaged in every class, focusing on safety and proper form. I really credit them for pushing me AND keeping me injury free. The new place at 2700 Garden Rd is big, has every piece of equipment imaginable (although I'm sure Frank can imagine more), and is perfectly located right off Highway 68 near the Monterey Airport. If you're new and considering CrossFit, then this is the place. That's my experience. And if you're already a crossfit veteran, this is a great box to call home. read more

I visited FCCF when I was in California to take a CrossFit Training course. I can't say enough great things about Frank and the rest of the First City team, especially as a fellow CrossFit Coach. The classes were well run, the programming was well though out and proper movement was prioritized. Thorough explanations were given about each movement and effective cues were given during the classes. As a coach, Frank's ability to run a class is one that should be modeled. I know I took a couple things away with me and use them every day in my own box. On a personal level, Frank and Erica are some of the nicest, most genuine people I've ever met. They made me feel at home and were a HUGE part of making my trip to CA a success. I hope that I can visit FCCF again in the future. We just moved here from the east coast and I was nervous about finding a new gym; and my first crossfit gym, at that! Everyone at First City was SO welcoming and friendly. The coaches are very attentive and give great guidance. The warm-up and mobility focused cool downs after the wod's are geared towards keeping us injury free - not just your typical "do the work out and go home" ideology. I have to be honest....I love the idea of cross fit. It's a workout like I have never had before. But I just did not like the cross-fit boxes I had tried. It felt like an exclusive club I was never going to be good enough to be a part of. As much as I wanted to continue, I just felt so unwelcome and uncomfortable I stopped going. It was way too much money to not feel like that. Enter First City CrossFit. It's more than a box...it's a family. From the moment I entered the building I felt welcomed, encouraged and taken care of. But form is king and the instructors and other participants are amazingly good at keeping you on the straight and narrow and getting the most out of each move. Where do I start... The owner Frank is phenomenal. As soon as he met me he knew what I needed. He recommeneded the Book Ready to Run from his crossfit Library. I'm almost done with it. I am injury prone and rehabilitating. I was very intimidated by a cross fit environment, but Frank told me that it's like family here and very supportive and he would have the instructor scale me so I don't keep hurting myself. God helped me 6yrs ago to go plant based so the journey of losing 40lb and rehabilitating old and new injuries prior and during Army NG life has been rough. God found me this place to take me to the next level of rehab. I am not a very competitive person yet even with myself. I just want to not feel injured anymore, I'll take sorness over injuries any day. I used up my 5 free sessions today and I pray to sign up Monday with my husband of 10 yrs. Frank says a couple who does crossfit together stays together. In our case God first and then crossfit. I was so thankful that a Christian memeber who was former Army started a conversation with me today about a plant based diet and we exchanged some helpful info then he prayed for me on the spot regarding my husband hopefully joining with me. His wife comes too and I can't wait to meet her. He has back problems like me, we were able to relate in so many ways. I feel so blessed that First City provided the right environment for us to make this connection possible. Another women I worked out today with was so wonderful and she kicked bum and she started talking to me about her being prior service as well. I loved it so much because God new my comfort zone, who to meet and where to start. Kyle, the instructor. Where do I start.. Kyle is out of this world amazing. He put up with me for 3 days straight. I went to 5 of his classes in 3 days, lol. He made sure I knew what I was doing and made sure I was comfortable. He even wrote up my own special work out so I wouldn't be doing the same thing over again. I was blown away that he was prepared for me the 2nd day with a new routine. I love his black lab child Kila who we get to run with on our 400mm. I pray this place will get me to rehabilitated completely so I can stop thinking of my injuries completley. If you go to the same class time every day you will do something diff every day for sure. I was just gunho about it because I'm 33 and I'm tired of wasting time. I have the luxury of going twice a day since the Lord had my quit a full time job. Now I just have to be mission ready for whenthe military calls. I have a feeling First City fitness will get me there. I have a PT test i. Oct and I am so close to getting 300. I have a few ambitious goals but I am taking slw because even if I do y reach those goals I know I will be better off then when I started regardless. -I never have to worry about water they have delicious state of the art coconut filtered water machine that pre measures your water. -checking in is easy, with a barcode on my phone -the cleaning product is from Seventh Generation, eco friendly cleaning spray, love it. -lots of quality fiber neon colored cleaning towels. -Child care available in the morning. The instructor I met in the morning had her 2 children at work with her. She was so pleasant and wonderful to talk to. She answered my questions when I first came in. She made me feel so at ease. She used to work at Monterey Fitness. She said this place jist worked out better for her and her fam. She is incharge of the run group on Sat. I won't be going since I have Sabbath, but it sounds like a great way to challenge ones self since they are getting ready for a half marathon at Big Sur. I've been to quite a few regular gyms and a fair amount of "boxes" and can easily, easily say this is my favorite. There are a ton of reasons to love it, but I'll just list the best. Atmosphere: It's a well stocked crossfit gym, so you should be able to find darn near anything you need to get in that great workout if you go on your own. But I'd recommend going to the classes. It's always clean, always bright, and usually has a flurry of openly warm and friendly people working out, chatting, or both. Seriously, they all seem to welcome you like family. I haven't felt such a sense of belonging to a gym in many, many years. Coaches: Each coach not only knows what they are talking about, but knows how to break down an unfamiliar exercise in a way anyone can understand. And the best part? They are all safety first coaches. They don't really care what your time is or if you're trying out for the games (unless you tell them you do), they just want you to be safe and injury free. So they'll watch your form, gently stop you if necessary, and retrain on the spot. It's very refreshing to be somewhere that you're not pushed to the point of injury just for a better time. And because I've been injury free for quite a while now, I'm in better shape than ever. Equipment: Very clean, well organized, and plentiful amounts of everything you'll need. The max class size is 16 and there is enough room and equipment for pretty much everyone! Owner: Frank legitimately loves this place. You can tell in his smile and the way he talks about it, the fact that he will regularly and happily take classes himself, assist in coaching, Coach himself, and stay after class helping people with a new skill. Just a great place to drop in at! The box is set up nicely, and the staff that I dealt with were super friendly, and helpful. I had trainers Anthony and Theo. I was impressed with Anthony and his style, and would have been really happy with just that, but I'm so happy to have had Theo train me. He was incredibly knowledgable and helped make my front rack better in about ninety seconds, something a dozen other trainers have all attempted to do, and failed. I cannot recommend Theo higher. I didn't get to meet Frank, the owner, but he was very available and friendly via phone and text and email. Great box, great facilities, great staff, great people to work out with. I was in Monterey for two weeks and needed to find a good crossfire gym to hold me over while away from my normal "box." FCCF turned out to be a very wise choice. The gym is huge and in great condition. The coaches I worked with, Heather and Connie, were welcoming and very knowledgable. They both took a personal interest in seeing the "visiting member" be successful. I liked their programing a lot. While still very challenging, it was easily scalable by the coaches when needed. Been looking for a good CrossFit gym for awhile. Came to try the First City CrossFit gym and was not disappointed. As a matter of fact, it exceeded all my expectations!!! It's very very clean and neat, extremely professional and nice coaches, as well as people who attend the gym. Every exercise is explained in great detail; either there are 2 people in class or 12, you always feel like you have one-on-one training. I had attended FCCF for roughly 2 1/2 months before moving out of state. I thoroughly enjoyed the people I've met, the coaches, and all of the training I was able to take away in that time. At first it was a little intimidating, but once you go a few times you get kind of hooked. I'd see the workouts, and think..
