    Crust not baked long enough
    Alexis P.

Its been a year or two since I've had a sweet potato pie from Carmi. They were always so delicious so I'm not sure what happened to the pies I remember but they are not the same. I recently bought two pies and unfortunately the crust was not done. I also found a few pieces of skin and a sprout from the potato, inside. Extremely disappointing! I had to put them in the oven as well, to brown the crust. They were pretty tasty while warm but I should not have to finish baking them at home.

Great service from Tijae. She was pleasant and provided great details when we were unsure what to get. My whole family left the restaurant happy and with take home boxes because the portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. My only disappointment was that they only had 1 dessert option (banana pudding) but I was too full to be sad about it. The seasoning of everything was on point- not salty, not bland, just right. Tried catfish nuggets, fried mac n cheese, and chicken wings with sweet potato waffle. Fried mac bites were huge and way bigger than expected. It makes no sense how they perfectly fried that much mac n cheese. It wasn't greasy or burnt or under cooked. The mac inside was actually flavorful and cheesy as if you were eating a side of mac n cheese alone. I don't think anyone makes fried mac n cheese as big or as good as Carmi's. Chicken & sweet potato waffle- Taste amazing together; taste amazing separately. The waffle doesn't need syrup. The chicken seasoning is special. I can't believe this is the 1st time I've been here but it won't be the last.

Came this past weekend during the Covid-19 fiasco. I called in advanced and there was a 30 minute wait which wasn't too bad for a Friday night. As everything was to-go, I walked in and did my best to steer clear of the other patron waiting on his food. Because the entry is so small, it was kinda hard to social distance but not impossible with just two. Unfortunately another guy came in and it was impossible...oh well...hope we're all safe. Cashier came by a few minutes later to get my name and meal. I got the fried chicken dinner with a side of mac and cheese and potato salad. Both sides were plentiful and I really enjoyed the potato salad especially. The cornbread was a little too dry for my taste but had a nice flavor. Finally, the flavor of the chicken was really nice with the cracked pepper and crispiness, but the chicken breast was small and chicken wing had almost no meat... Overall I enjoyed the meal but found it to be a little overpriced.

I loved the service received here! Came in on a Saturday for brunch and it wasn't busy at all. Our meals came out very quickly and delicious. The only reason they got a 4 star from me is because I was not the biggest fan of the yams. They were more on the savory side and almost tasted as if the yams were overly ripe so I tasted some bitterness. They do not offer parking so come prepared to look for a street meter parking. I will definitely be back anytime I'm in town.

READY to have tastebuds activated. The baked beans I give a 5, try( SHOWCASE BBQ). The smoke wings not dry slight smoke flavor. I give them a 5 as well. (Showcase wins again)

My parents ordered dinner here recently and the food was WAY undercooked! They've reached out multiple times for team members to inform them "management will be in touch." It's been over a week with now two attempts and nothing... This is unacceptable, especially considering what we pay for dinners here. The service is just ridiculous.

Catfish crispy w/sweet potato fries sprinkled w/cinnamon

After touring Univ of Pitt/Carnegie Mellon we were starving and looking for a good spot for lunch. The marketing for Carmi's says "the best Soulfood in Pittsburgh" now this is my first time in Pitt, but I'll bet this is the truth!! The food was absolutely mouth watering! I ordered the lunch option of catfish w/a side of sweet potato fries and mixed greens. I asked for the catfish crispy, which was delivered and the fries had a sprinkle of cinnamon which is missing when most folks prepare sweet potato fries (Thanks for the person that indicated this in their review), the greens were mixed with Kale (a bit diff) mustards and collards w/turkey (always a plus). They have a full bar, so I also Indulged in the TN sweet tea! My 4 colleagues enjoyed their meals as well, one was new to soul food and throughly enjoyed her chicken/waffles; the waffles were a bit "light" to me; but they enjoyed it! The wait was a bit; but it was 100%worth it! If I ever make it back to Pitt, I'll definitely go back to try the shrimp n grits!

Loved Carmi (pronounced Car- my). It's run by a dynamic husband and wife. All of the staff and incredibly friendly. Wait staff is young and whatever they lack in experience they make up for in effort. I visited on a Sunday during a work trip (when my flight was cancelled *cue uncontrollable eye rol. I was traveling solo so I sat by the bar where I sparked up a conversation with who I found out later was one of the owners. I could sort of tell because I noticed she was the same one on the t-shirts lol. I ordered the carmi punch and the catfish and grits and a side of mixed greens with smoked turkey. Food was exactly what I wanted/needed. Definitely had a lot of soul and southern flair. Cornmeal crust on the catfish was super crispy, the mixed greens had all that smoked turkey flavor and the cheese grits were damn near perfect. I could have done with the yellow cheese on top of the grits tho (but then maybe they wouldnt be cheesy grits). I could tell based on the conversations that its a place loved by the community. There were a lot of "hey Aunties" and "long time no sees", seemed like there are a lot of regulars. If Im ever in Pittsburgh again Im coming back for seconds.

If you are sick of bar food on carson Carmi is a great option. I was finally able to give this relatively new restaurant a try. The menu offers a great selection of dishes; it was really hard to choose! I ordered the fried chicken and it did not disappoint. Each dinner comes with the option of soup or salad and two sides. I got the hot sausage soup; which was just alright. To be honest it tasted like elevated chef boyardee but that's not necessarily a bad thing! I picked sweet potato fries and cornbread stuffing as my two sides. The fries were wonderful and complimented the savoriness of the chicken very well. The stuffing on the other hand was a little dry for my taste. If I go again I'd definitely try the Mac and cheese. The service was a tad slow but very friendly and helpful. Overall, I would recommend Carmi and I'd definitely go again.

I still love Carmi so much. During Covid they have made takeout very easy. Everyone needs some comfort food right about now, and this is just the place to go. They give you a nice portion size, and everything is always so tasty. I will say the dinner prices are a bit steep though. I paid $18 for my fried chicken dinner, and I was kind of disappointed in the chicken. It was sort of underwhelming, and the quality of chicken wasn't the best. The sides are unbelievable! I highly recommend the cornbread stuffing, mac & cheese, and greens. They give you a really decent portion of sides with your dinner and a piece of cornbread. Also the stuffed chicken dinner is my absolute favorite entree. Two chicken breasts stuffed with the cornbread stuffing, covered in gravy. YUM. You gotta give them a try.

I have had my eye on this restaurant for a little bit . We were truly hungry for some comfort food. We came during dinner time on a Tuesday . I think it was around 430pm so the restaurant was pretty empty. We were seated immediately and they came to take our orders fast. We ordered chicken and waffles with collard greens. My boyfriend ordered catfish and grits . The food came out hot and ready to eat. I have to say if you have not come here, you need to. My waffle was big and fluffy . The chicken was juicy and crispy on the outside. It was like my grandma made it. The catfish was crispy and very big. The grits were very good but somewhat oily so be aware of that. The meal was not overly expensive. It was comparable to what you'll see on the southside. This place is a hidden gem

No one came to greet us for maybe five minutes, and I started to get nervous because there were only about five other occupied tables in the restaurant and I figured that servers would be pretty prompt. The person that served us turned out to be the bartender as the bar was right next to our table. This person did not offer us water, ask have you been here before, or any of the other pleasantries that all the other wait staff was telling to the other tables that we could hear. The other wait staff was telling people about the breakfast and their specials and the biscuits and everything and we got nothing. I don't know why we weren't seated somewhere with a server who didn't have to also deal with the bar, but our service was extremely slow and I am sure that is why. I ordered the lemonade and it was really delicious except that I would've liked to have had a water to drink as well. My husband ordered an iced coffee which he said was good but it was in a very tiny brandy type glass that could not have been more than 6 ounces. At five dollars for each of our drinks I would think that it could be maybe a little bigger. The person helping us never came back to talk about refills or having another drink or water or anything. We ordered the biscuits and I ordered a breakfast meal and my husband ordered the half of a chicken. I wanted my eggs over easy and they were almost hard. They were definitely not over easy; they were overcooked. Everything else was acceptable but not delicious. My husband's chicken was very juicy. He didn't get his salad until a few minutes after our entrées were delivered though. A different server brought the salad over to us and she said "ha ha found it" trying to make a joke, but it was like yeah we get it. You guys aren't very good at running food out. When it was time to pay, it took us asking for the bill to get it and then at least five minutes for it to be picked back up when we would've liked to have been on our way. The food was ordinary and the service was pretty bad. We won't be back again. Our breakfast was $50 plus $10 tip and parking and we can get much better service elsewhere for that same price.

Unfortunately, a frustrating service experience ruined what should have been an excellent dinner. My main course was supposed to feature chicken served over potatoes, but when the plate arrived, it came with rice instead with zero prior notice. When I inquired about the missing potatoes, our server offhandedly mentioned they were out and had substituted rice. When I explained that rice actually nauseates me, her response was simply, "Well, you're not allergic, right?" and walked away. She only offered to make something else much later after noticing I had pushed the rice as far away from my food as possible, but by then, our table was well into the meal. Not wanting to make a scene or drag out the evening, I declined. As a result, I only got to eat the chicken and mushrooms, leaving the restaurant still hungry. Con Alma has incredible energy, top-notch live music, and great flavors, but substituting a core element of a dish without telling the guest, followed by a dismissive reaction, was a major letdown.
