I hadn't been back to Popie Redd's in a while and I'm glad to report that the bbq and sides are just as delicious as ever. I ordered a pork rib platter and a wing platter, each with two sides. Both the wings and ribs are fall off the bone with tasty sauces. The greens are tangy and mustardy, the beans are rich & sweet and the mac & cheese is creamy. Its legit. Some of these prices are genuinely jaw-dropping. Like, incredible and unheard of. A steak and cheese sandwich for $5?! Now, I'm sure some of the quality of the items might not be the same as a fine dining place, but it was still delicious. The steak and cheese sandwich came in quite a large portion (especially for the incredibly low price). The steak was surprisingly fairly tender and not too fatty. There wasn't a ton of cheese on the sandwich, but just enough to make it tasty. The bun itself was kind of soggy, but not incredibly so. All in all, this place has some nice meats and amazing sandwiches. Some of these prices are truly stellar, it's definitely overlooked, and I would love to come back! read more

Excellent flavors! Eaten from here couple times but the food is so good that it doesn't last until a picture can be taken. Finally able to this time. Ordered Half pork ribs-- fall off the bone tender, with a beautiful rub. Sauces were House spicy & Bourbon ((lightly sweet))-- both went great with the ribs. Sides were: corn bread, collards & potatoe salad-- I do not believe these need any explanation, if you've tried these you'd know! Still.... Oh so wonderful!! Last time we had the Candied Yams which were so good! A bit extra sweet if you like it that way. I'm so surprised this place not once popped up in our BBQ searches until we moved to forest hills. Hello, as of 3/22/2023 I have went here today on a whim. The food was very good, I had ordered the special with the 2x bones/ribs, 2x sides, etc. The owner(s) welcomed me with open arms and were extremely kind. So you may be asking me why exactly am I giving this wonderful restaurant a "1 star" review? Well, I suddenly met a guy there named UNCLE NEW YORK who proceeded to insist that he shows us a MAGIC TRICK. After watching his trick for about 10 minutes or so, and then finishing my meal, he tried to bum me for tips because I witnessed his trick. Afterwards, he begged me to give him a ride back home "up the hill" as he calls it. Once I tried to drop him off at his apartments, he then told me that he needed money. So being the empathetic person that I am, I drove to a nearby bar which he claimed to have an ATM. Once I was at this extremely shady bar and walked in with him, I withdrew a $20. He then tried to get all of my $20, so I gave him half and booked it in my car and got the hell of Forest Hills as quickly as I could. Please do not offer this man: 1. A ride 2. Everything to love about this place. Food is excellent. Really authentic BBQ. Staff was outstanding. Very helpful and d friendly. Casual atmosphere but that was perfect for the the food. Prices very fair. I can not wait to go back!! I had the smoked chicken that fell off the bone. Don't even need utensils. Sweet n spicy Beans were crazy good, like nothing I've had before. I happen to be in the area working today around lunchtime and decided to stop in. I actually could smell the ribs cooking before they even opened and boy did it smell great First, very nice owner and I enjoyed having a conversation with him. I ordered a sample of the ribs, 1/2 chicken, macaroni and cheese and he included a piece of their cornbread. His signature sauce was phenomenal in the ribs were everything I hope they would be. The chicken tasted delicious and was very moist inside. The mac & cheese was like mama used to make. I am not usually a big fan of cornbread but I can tell you, I've never tasted anything like this before, it was almost like eating candy! You must try the cornbread. Not as I anticipated or expected. 1. They were out of the sides which I had selected. 2. The Greens were good, but a bit salty. 3. The Potato Salad was bland. 4. Hands down the best BBQ I've ever had in my life! Both the food and the service are incredible! We ordered both beef and pork ribs, macaroni & cheese, and some corn bread. The food is the real deal. Great smoked ribs and chicken - very tender and flavorful - and superb sides. Beans are the best in the 'burgh, mac-and-cheese is creamy, rice and well-seasoned, and the candied yams are perfect. Cornbread is quite unique, moist and hearty, not the crumbly cornbread some places serve. Sides can run out, especially late in the day, but that is to be expected. Popie is charming and helpful, and the dining experience is overall wonderful. This is an authentic soul-food restaurant well worth seeking out. I love this place. The family behind the counter is super friendly and you can just tell they are extremely proud of their food... and they absolutely should be. I've never even tried their sandwiches because their barbecued chicken and wings are so good. The best part of their chicken is that they come with the amazing sides! The sweet and spicy beans are my favorite. The greens are also very good. The yams may be the best yams I've ever had. They have about ten sauces to choose from, all homemade.
