We visit my wife's aunt in Latrobe about once a year from Connecticut, where the default cuisine is Italian. There is something different and special about an Italian restaurant in Western PA. It's just better. More delicious and more hospitable. Carmine's is the perfect example. As mentioned in other reviews, Carmine's smells amazing. It will be crowded, so either arrive early or be prepared to wait. It's worth it. Everything our party ordered was terrific--zucchini planks, cheesy bread (from Enrico's), polenta, eggplant parm, and even an outstanding version of a Pittsburgh steak salad with that famous Carmine's dressing. So good! Great portion size for the price (50% cheaper than Connecticut). I also agree with reviewers who consider the marinara to be a tad too sweet, but that's up to your personal taste. It's still delicious. Carmine made a personal appearance at our table and was super hospitable. We could not have enjoyed the experience any more than we did. We will be back to Carmine's every time we are in Latrobe. read more

What better way to experience Steelers Training Camp with a local restaurant hosting a food truck... Carmine's had a food truck at St. Vincent College for Steelers Training Camp and their pizza filled the entire lot with a delicious aroma!! Even from their truck, the pizza was phenomenal. The crust was so fresh and perfectly baked with that brick oven flavor! Cheese and sauce had so much flavor and... well... pepperoni is always the best topping. Even cooler... this was the only food truck that leaned into the Steelers vibe with banners to greet guests into their pop up tent. Oh... and a pop up tent for guests to get out of the sun.. talk about putting the customer first!! I will have to come back and give Carmine's brick and mortar a try now to! read more

We were visiting my in-laws for a longer stay this time so we had the chance to explore more restaurants in the area. Our aunt mentioned Carmine's Pizza & Pasta so we decided to give it a try. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed. We later realized it was the day of the St. Patrick's Day parade so many people seemed to stop by afterwards. We noticed a lot of tables enjoying pizza but since we had just had pizza the day before, we decided to try some other dishes. We started with the Fried Cheese "Formaggio Fritto". The menu mentioned that it was made with aged provolone which is why we ordered it but it tasted more like mozzarella to us. Because of that, it wasn't quite what we expected. I ordered the Lump Crab Fettuccine with marinara sauce. The marinara was sweeter than I personally prefer and I didn't notice much crab flavor in the dish. My husband tried one of the polenta dishes since we don't often see polenta offered at Italian restaurants. We originally thought the polenta itself would be baked but it seemed that only the top was baked. We prefer polenta that's crispy on the outside so it wasn't exactly what we had in mind. The sauce on top was also on the sweeter side, though it paired better with the polenta. One thing we have to mention is the portion sizes. They were incredibly generous! My husband ended up getting about four meals out of his polenta dish. We also ordered tiramisu to go which was sweeter than we prefer but enjoyable with a nice espresso flavor. I almost feel bad writing this review because the staff were extremely nice and friendly. Overall, I think the flavors just didn't quite match our personal taste but we appreciated the great service and generous portions. read more

We order pizza from Carmine's fairly often and think it's the best around! We decided to order catering for my birthday party and it did not disappoint. Lasagna, meatballs, salad and stuffed peppers. Ordered take out. One large pepperoni pizza. It's a thin pizza but not a tough dough. The pepperoni are smaller but they are quite thick. While the orange cream cake is not made in house, it is fantastic. While we did not eat at the restaurant, it seemed really nice. The noise level was low and there was not much noise coming from the kitchen. Overall, very nice establishment. Price is very competitive for the area. Parking might be difficult during busy hours. The street is level and would not be a hard walk if parked up the street. read more

Update.. It's been 5 months and I came back to Latrobe for work and just had to try Carmines again. The food and service were just as amazing as the first time but this time I tried the house made salad dressing! Luckily they bottle it so I have 2 to bring back home. I was blown away by the quality of service and food at this restaurant. Chris welcomed us in and set the tone right away. He made some recommendations and we went for it. The pizza was insane and cooked beautifully. He recommended the wings to us as well and they were delicious and crispy. The ownership here is so welcoming and humble. This restaurant deserves the world and they truly delivered us an amazing experience. The ambiance is chill and it's not an overwhelming massive restaurant with too many tables. With that being said you can have a conversation without yelling. I travel more than half the year for work and this was easily some of the best food I've ever had on the road. I ordered an x-large pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms, IT WAS GREAT! The pizza was huge and weighted about 20 pounds. Enough to feed a small army. The flavors were the perfect balance of sauce and cheese with a ton of toppings. I grew up in the Philadelphia area and have had a hard time finding pizza here that matched back east. I now have. I waited over two hours for my order shortly after they opened originally. When I got my pizza the toppings were slide totally over to one half of the pizza. Fantastic mom-and-pop pizza joint... Located outside Latrobe downtown-proper, it's really not much to look at from the street, and inside you are greeted with a length-wise bar and seating that is tightly packed beside it. All of this I mention simply to paint the picture of the charm to the place. A small, family owned pizza place where they treat you like they know you and the food is plentiful and fresh. My golfing partner and I stopped at his suggestion - I am glad he did. For dinner I had their massive meatball calzone, while he had a cheese pizza. I also took home a small mushroom and onion for my wife. All of it was delivered hot and fresh to the table and it was so much, we had to take doggie bags home. Service was super attentive and kept my glass of water bottom-less. I needed it as I was slightly dehydrated from our golf outing. Carmine's is a blessing to all those who appreciate family, home-cooked meals with love being the first ingredient. We have been to Carmine's on many occasion and the food has always been exceptional. The atmosphere is simply that of a large Italian American family getting together for a meal; feels like home. Take yesterday for an example, Carmine, Chris, Gabby, their mom, and Carmines mother-in-law all chatted with us and the other patrons. This is the place to go if you wanted to be treated like family. As for the meal, we had the short rib ragu special. It was beyond phenomenal! I have never had it prepared and taste any better or even close. I spend a lot of time in Chicagoland, best foodie city in the world IMHO, and Carmines would be a gem and hold their own with the best Chicago has to offer.
