Carmine’s Pizza & Pasta - Lump Crab Fettuccini with marinara sauce

There is something different and special about an Italian restaurant in Western PA. It's just better. More delicious and more hospitable. Carmine's is the perfect example. As mentioned in other reviews, Carmine's smells amazing. It will be crowded, so either arrive early or be prepared to wait. It's worth it. Everything our party ordered was terrific--zucchini planks, cheesy bread (from Enrico's), polenta, eggplant parm, and even an outstanding version of a Pittsburgh steak salad with that famous Carmine's dressing. So good! Great portion size for the price (50% cheaper than Connecticut). I also agree with reviewers who consider the marinara to be a tad too sweet, but that's up to your personal taste. It's still delicious. Carmine made a personal appearance at our table and was super hospitable. We could not have enjoyed the experience any more than we did. We will be back to Carmine's every time we are in Latrobe.

Our aunt mentioned Carmine's Pizza & Pasta so we decided to give it a try. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed. We later realized it was the day of the St. Patrick's Day parade so many people seemed to stop by afterwards. We noticed a lot of tables enjoying pizza but since we had just had pizza the day before, we decided to try some other dishes. We started with the Fried Cheese "Formaggio Fritto". The menu mentioned that it was made with aged provolone which is why we ordered it but it tasted more like mozzarella to us. Because of that, it wasn't quite what we expected. I ordered the Lump Crab Fettuccine with marinara sauce. The marinara was sweeter than I personally prefer and I didn't notice much crab flavor in the dish. My husband tried one of the polenta dishes since we don't often see polenta offered at Italian restaurants. We originally thought the polenta itself would be baked but it seemed that only the top was baked. We prefer polenta that's crispy on the outside so it wasn't exactly what we had in mind. The sauce on top was also on the sweeter side, though it paired better with the polenta. One thing we have to mention is the portion sizes. They were incredibly generous! My husband ended up getting about four meals out of his polenta dish. We also ordered tiramisu to go which was sweeter than we prefer but enjoyable with a nice espresso flavor. I almost feel bad writing this review because the staff were extremely nice and friendly. Overall, I think the flavors just didn't quite match our personal taste but we appreciated the great service and generous portions.

I would say in that time we have ordered just about everything on the menu. While we have moved half an hour away, we still make the trip for the food. That stops today. It took the waitress 25 mins to bring a salad and hot cheese balls. Firstly we thought they changed and were now a finger food establishment as we didn't get silverware. Then we noticed the cheese balls not only being room temp but also did not arrive w sauce. The waitress never came back for us to ask for sauce. The croutons on the salad were stale beyond belief. Inedible. Then the entrees arrived. What happened??? What did you do to the alfredo? There was no flavor and very little of it. We know what this sauce can taste like and that wasn't it. The broccoli was hard and seemed as if they just added it at the end, raw. The waitress never came back after dropping off the food. We never got refills. To say I am sad and disappointed would be the understatement of the year. I cannot stress enough how this failed all previous expectations. An hour and 15 mins for hot cheese balls, alfredo & a Stromboli is a bit much. Had this been the quality we know it can be, it wouldn't have mattered. No more road trips. Plenty of free parking on and off street. There is a ramp but I will warn you, it's long and a decently high grade. Inside there are booths and regular tables. Enough room to walk through the rooms or use a wheelchair, walker, scooter or cane. Noise level is low. You feel a part of the restaurant but not too close to those around you. Decor is simple and honestly what you might expect from an Italian restaurant. Kitchen is visible but you don't hear or see much from it.

It is so terrible that it actually became comical. I wanted to visit Falbo's because I remembered eating there as a child in the 1980's. I was excited to eat there when I was visiting Latrobe. I now live 1500 miles from there. It began when we walked in and we were told that we could sit anywhere. I saw a 6 top table in the corner. Before sitting there I asked if it was ok since we were only a party of 2. The waitress said, "you can sit anywhere except the top level." That was fine. So we sat at the 6 top table since it was on the lower level. We sat for about 10 min without any acknowledgment from the waitstaff. Then, another waitress said, "you are going to have to move because this is a reserved table." I told her we had already asked about sitting there and had received permission. She said we could absolutely not sit there because it was reserved for reservations. We got up and moved to another table. More than an hour later when we were finished and leaving, not one person had ever sat at that table. The waitress was rude and absolutely made it that I will never return. Picture of the "reserved" table is attached. Waitstaff is very inattentive. We waited long periods of time for drinks. We ordered a Chianti and then were told that they didn't have Chianti but had something "similar." I asked what the wine they had was. They didn't know. The pasta is cheap and the sauce is relatively tasteless. I would give FALBO'S a hard pass. Average food at best and terrible service.
