We paid them almost $1800 for a 3-night stay and they put us in a BASEMENT room, with one window off in an alcove looking UP to a trash in an alley. We asked for a different room and after much back & forth put us in a same-class room that at least looked OUT on a dumpster. (Then as we were leaving there was another couple in the lobby saying "They put us in the basement??") This apparently used to be a glorious room with a high ceiling but the space has been awkwardly chopped up including a bathroom wall that doesn't go up to the ceiling. And the bathroom had no exhaust vent, so it steams up when you shower and then if you want to see the mirror to shave or brush your teeth you're out of luck. But what was really galling is their note saying that "to enhance our stay" they have charged us an extra $35/day basically for 2 small bottles of Dasani water. Oh that also covers the loan of vintage board games. No coffeemakers in the rooms. You make your way to the lobby and stand in line. The room had a guide to historic hotels. It listed many there in DC that would have been much better.

Being an Expedia Gold Member, I was able to take advantage of the VIP rewards and the manager Lyle generously upgraded our room. Our room was gorgeous with a city view, I loved everything about it, the color scheme, the bed, the bathroom, all of it. Our stay was very comfortable, they made us feel completely at home and we even took advantage of their happy hour before we headed for the rest of our day. To top it off, right as we're leaving the lobby, we noticed an employee making fresh popcorn in one of those old school popcorn stands. We immediately grabbed a cute little bag and got a huge scoop of popcorn for our train ride. Score! Aside from the inside of the hotel, it is conveniently located in Dupont Circle, so close to the metro station, down the street from a CVS and restaurants. They even had a farmers market going on right next to the hotel on Sunday morning. Beautiful hotel, friendly staff, a very comfortable stay in my books. I love boutique hotels and this one is off the charts!

Do not book this venue…read more My spouse and I booked this venue for our wedding a year in advance. We are extremely busy attorneys and wanted to stay ahead of schedule. Three months out from our wedding day - having put down thousands of dollars in non-reimbursable deposits and friends and family from around the continent planning their travel - Dumbarton sent us an email in the middle of the work day to say our wedding had been cancelled. Not even the courtesy of a phone call. The reason? The HVAC needed to be replaced. Dumbarton claimed to be invoking the force majeure provision of the contract. As attorneys, we know that this is not a proper invocation of such a provision. Dumbarton failed to take account of the age and state of their HVAC system and booked events it could not in fact host due to these issues. Just because Dumbarton failed to foresee the need to replace the HVAC does not mean this was unforseeable. This was negligence. And it was a breach of our contract. Through our own extraordinary effort and extreme luck, we ended up securing another venue for the same date. That other venue, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, was extremely sympathetic and made accommodations for us, which was the only reason that this last minute change worked out. This was also the only reason Dumbarton avoided a lawsuit from us. After we had secured a new venue, Dumbarton attempted to backtrack and said that we might still be able to host our event at their venue, but we would have to sign additional waivers related to the HVAC system. Obviously our confidence in Dumbarton to host this most important event had been completely destroyed, and we had no interest in waiving any rights we had against them. Nor do we think it was appropriate for them to say that they would only honor our contract, which they had already breached, by signing additional waivers. Making matters worse, it took Dumbarton over a month to return our several thousand dollar deposit to us after this debacle. First, they claimed their online payment system was not working--something we had to point out to them after the money never came to us. Then they said they would mail us a check. After more weeks went by, we asked where our money was. Only at that point did they actually bother to send us the check. In the time we were in contact with Dumbarton, they went through at least two event managers, both of whom were fresh out of college when they started working there. I cannot stress enough the importance of booking a wedding venue with an experienced event manager. The fact that Dumbarton cannot seem to keep one longer than a few months is telling. (And to be clear, the fault went straight to the top, including the Executive Director who emailed us about these "updates.") As a final warning - when we first looked at this venue, we looked at reviews online and we noticed some saying that their event management staff were disorganized and inexperienced. When we brought these reviews up to staff when we visited the venue, they assured us that those reviews were not by the couples themselves. Well - let me be absolutely clear: I am half of a couple and Dumbarton was a nightmare. Do not book this venue if you actually want your wedding to happen.

It was a private residence until 1928 when it became the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America HQ. Four years later, they opened a house museum inside. They offer tours for $10 and it takes you through the house museum on the ground floor and the exhibit on the second floor, which rotates every six months. There's also a large garden on the property as well. Dumbarton House also hosts some of the most unique events in the city- 1) The Dumbarton House in Georgetown hosts some of the most unique events in the city- 1) Jane Austen movie nights on July Wednesdays in the garden, 2) Ice cream making on the lawn in honor of First Lady Dolley Madison, 3) Afternoon tea for families, and 4) Chamber music concerts. If you love events and history, it's worth a visit. The staff are also very friendly and very knowledgeable about D.C. and the museum industry.

We were there around the time of GWU "move-in" so there were lots of parents dropping off their college-age kids - when did this sort of thing become so dramatic? Only "off" thing about the place is the short set of stairs between the reception and the elevator. Every single guest has to haul their luggage up and down the steps - seems like a small capital investment in a ramp would be a good idea.

I chose the Melrose Georgetown because of location. I arrived to the hotel earlier than expected,…read moreabout 1:30pm-2:00pm. I went to check-in,hoping that my room would be ready. I was told right away that my room was ready but there's a $50 charge to get into your room early. I thought it was a little crazy to charge someone extra to get into a room that is ready. So I paid the $50. They told me about the amenities. Including the $10 bottle of water in the room. The room looked nice. The Furniture looked high-end. But that's only on the surface. I'm not sure how secure the room is. I say this because the door latch/lock is about halfway off the door. Routine maintenance apparently isn't a thing. The room was also EXTREMELY dusty. The Bed: the mattress didn't have much give. To be honest, it felt like somebody had put a small pad over center blocks bed. It was very hard and extra firm. The sheets and bedspread was nice, but the fitted sheet appears to be worn out. Or maybe too big for the mattress. The fitted sheet does not take much to get loose and starting to raise up off the edges. I noticed just laying on the bed the fitted sheet becomes loose, a lot more than it should be The pillows feels like somebody took some padding and chopped it up into 1000 little pieces and then sewed it in a pillowcase. The pillows may have been top-notch when bought. They're definitely not now. The Bathroom also is where looks can be deceiving at first glance. The countertop and sink were fine, however the countertop did have numerous paint chips, but I guess that's just normal wear. There is a door that separates the toilet and the bathtub. Toilet seat is extremely loose and moves back-and-forth very easy. It would not take much for it to come flying off. The first day I noticed while using the bathroom, there are several brown stains and on the wall. If you're sitting on the commode, it is well within arms reach maybe a foot away from the toilet. I have no clue what it is, but I'm guessing either blood or poop. Either way, there is a big smear on the wall. And then other various similar brown marks around it. The bathtub has numerous rust marks. The tub is a broken hip waiting to happen. The tub is curved at the bottom so it's not necessarily a flat surface. If you're taking a shower, between the soap and the water, my feet slid around several times. Also, at the base of the door frame, where the shower is, the wood is split numerous times. The bathroom door looks like somebody tried to punch it open. There's a small crack above the door knob. The Hotel: according to Google, the Melrose Georgetown is a four star luxury boutique Hotel. Luxury or not there are several things that are absent. Trash cans in the common areas. Other than your room. The only other trashcan they have is in the lobby. Several times during the week I've had to go downstairs to put something in the trashcan. I'm not sure why, but I feel there should be a trashcan on each floor, even if it's by the elevators. Ice machines is another thing that's absent. They have one you just have to go down to the lobby and ask someone at the desk to get it. Depending on who's at the desk, you may get an attitude. There's one lady who's been there the majority of the week who seemed very irritated anytime I came to ask for ice or anything. I had several occasions where I would ask this lady something and it seemed that it was such a hassle for her just to answer the question. A few evenings ago I asked another one of the front desk clerks about Uber availability early in morning. She seemed very irritated that I even asked her a question. I got a one word answer "yeah". I wished I knew these ladies names. I believe I know one of their names. But these ladies are giving your hotel a bad name with their attitude. Convenience or not I definitely would seek out another hotel if I'm ever in the area again. Between the bed, the unknown stains wall next to the toilet, the rude staff member in the added price to get in a room that's already available is unnecessary. And with the price I paid for the room the bed should not be uncomfortable Also at checkout this morning I had an additional $200 in fees, such as Historical fees. I thought I had already pain in full (minus the room service cost). So this charge seemed like a surprise full of random fees. ROOM 832
