Business is situated in a great area between Ridgeland and Jackson. The store was nicely organized but had a strange odor. The food in the cafe in the back looked like it had been sitting for hours and it was only 10 am. Highly deceptive pricing! They do not put prices on anything. Staff will speak only in Spanish to you. As a Latina, I find that this not only is unprofessional but not tailored to serve a community that is in need for reasonable pricing. Carniceria Valdez is a great option for Mexican food and it is a great example that the best Mexican food comes from humble establishments rather than some high-end establishment heavy on atmosphere and ambiance. Carniceria Valdez is literally a counter in the back of a Mexican grocery, but coming out of that kitchen is some mighty fine Mexican food. I went with a couple of tacos and a gordita. For the gordita, I went with chorizo as the protein and for the tacos I went with the asada and the barbacoa. The tacos were just under two dollars each ($1.99 to be exact) and the gordita was, I believe, $3.50. I probably enjoyed the gordita the most and the chorizo was definitely my favorite protein out of my three choices. The staff was friendly enough, though the ordering process was you walk up to the counter and order your meal and they call you up when it is ready. All in all, I would definitely recommend here and I will give it five stars. read more

We got the Barbacoa and pastor gorditas, and oh man, we inhaled it so quick, I forgot to breath. From the crispy fried corn flour, to the well seasoned, tender meat, to the two different cheese that they used, this thing can take my breath away any day. We also got the asada torta, the asada was delicious, but I'm not a fan of tortas. The man really enjoyed it thought, fries wasn't seasoned and we usually like it more crispy. We ran into my friend, she let us try the fruit cup and the pineapple mango drink. Both were so good! The mango was sweet, tangy and had chile. We eat very similar flavors in the Asian culture, so I'm used to these flavor mash up, my American boyfriend, not so much. Surprisingly not that cheap for a Mexican place. It's actually a Mexican store with a restaurant inside. The food was excellent! I had a steak burrito, a pork taco, fries, and a strawberry soda. (I thought I was going to get rice and beans not fries but meh). $12. $14 with my after lunch Ferraro Duplo Hazelnut bar (love). There was not all that much meat in the burrito which was disappointing. It was almost solely rice, beans, cheese, and veggies. I still say rice is a way for places to fill a burrito without using meat. The steak was very fatty. Like cow flavored bubble gum. The picture on the menu, which I know is an unrealistic expectation, was meat, avocado, tortilla. This had almost no meat and no avocado at all. This was like buying a red jacket on eBay and getting snow shoes. The seasoned pork taco was excellent!! Really, I think I just ordered the wrong thing. I should have skipped the burrito and ordered a plate of tacos. All in all I think it was pretty plain because I ordered the wrong thing. I know I am not the first person to do a review on Carniceria Valdez, but I'm gonna write it anyway. I've had people tell me about this place for the longest, but I didn't think about it, because this is Jackson and there's not too many places that provide authentic cuisine, especially Mexican. In Biloxi there's quite a few spots, but I look at Biloxi as if its Northwest Florida (that's what it was originally called anyway), but in Jackson you have LaMorena's and La Guadalupe, but now that I'm officially hip to Carniceria Valdez, this is gonna be my official go to spot for authentic taco's in the Metro area. I'll let all the southern yuppies, buppies (that's black yuppie, lol!) and preppies have Babalu's and Jaco Taco's - I wouldn't touch that gringo tex-mex fare with a ten foot pole and it was for free, I don't eat for ambiance - I want some good authentic grub when it comes to my tacos and burritos. They even have a butcher shop where they offer all the beef cuts and then on top of that they have the pre-seasoned fajita meat, where you can take it home and make YOUR VERY OWN AUTHENTIC TACO's - yes indeed! They sell groceries as well, tortilla's, seasonings, fresh fruits and vegetables, and marinades (their selection is better than La Guadalupes) Carniceria's offers diverse mexican sodas and drinks, including your standard beer collection - Corona's, Modela's, Tecate's as well. Taco's go for $1.99 a piece, they have fried chicken, the REAL chiccarone's, shrimp cocktail (cevache), they offer a good size burrito too. I'm so glad I finally broke down and tried this place, because now I know where to go when I want some really good tacos and La Guadalupe and La Morena are too busy. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, this is it! It's basically a grocery store with a deli in back. They have a meat market as well. We ordered at the deli and sat down to eat. They don't serve you at your table. And I got the feeling it was family owned. I had to use the translate feature on my phone as not everyone spoke English. But everyone was so nice and helpful! A few months ago, before I knew that La Morena was closed on Tuesdays, I made the trek out to Ridgeland for my taco fix. When I saw the "Cerrado" sign on the door, I was disappointed, but not disheartened. This gave me the opportunity to try some other taquerias in the area. Carneceria Valdez is first and foremost a "mercado" or grocery store filled with produce and dry goods you would expect to find in Mexico. They have fresh produce, a true butcher shop (as opposed to the pre-cut, pre-wrapped meat counter you will find at Wal-Mart) and aisles of dry goods. You can get Tide or Clorox there, but although the logos will be familiar, the boxes read "detergente ultra" and "salvo en los colores." All of the tacos and other menu items are ordered at the butcher counter and you know that the food is fresh because you see the cooks take the meats directly from the display counter to the back and return again with your meal. The tacos are served with cilantro and onions and come with radishes and lime on the side. Although they are just as authentic and fresh as my favorite (La Morena), the seasoning isn't quite as top notch or they also would get that forth star. So if you find yourself in Ridgeland on a Tuesday, or if you need to pick up some plantains and a new tortilla press, grab some tacos from Valdez...and don't forget to order a handful of Chicharones (fried pork rinds) which are made fresh, on-premises. Along with La Morena a block up Old Canton, this is one of the best places for tacos in Jackson. The place is primarilly a meat market and grocery so the fillings are fresh, grilled to order and served with in soft corn tortillas of chopped white onion, cilantro and sliced radish and a squeeze of lime and red and green salsas. End of the week is the best time to drop by. Carnitas are tasty and you get a fair portion with a plate. The chicharrones here gave me faith in chicharrones (I've not tried chicharrones elsewhere that I'd actually liked). The Birria is closer to barbacoa than the birria that would be prepared in Jalisco, but it is still very good.
