I went to El Charro for Cinco de Mayo with a group from the office, and it was a pretty disappointing experience. I ordered the chicken fajitas, and they were just bland, barely any seasoning, which is kind of the whole point. But the real issue was the sides. The rice and beans portion was noticeably small, maybe half of what you'd expect at most Mexican restaurants. Even worse, it was served cold, and not just slightly cooled off, but refrigerator cold. On a busy holiday, I get that things can slip, but basic quality and temperature shouldn't be one of them. Definitely not what I was expecting. read more

My spouse and I love this place. We come here with my sister and nephew all the time. An order of fries with queso, the birria tacos, and the quesabirrias are our go-to favorites. They have 2 for 1 margaritas every day also, so that's a huge plus. Prices are good, service is great, and the atmosphere is very relaxed. This has been our go-to Mexican resturant for over a decade. It has been here serving the community for decades before that. We have seen ebbs and flows in service and quality but this visit was different. Subtle changes are taking place, new menus, new staff, and new food choices. Our food came out fast and was probably the best we have had here. The manager come out to talk to us about the upcoming refresh to take place. He made us a special margarita they are adding to the menu...a "skinny margarita". That was the freshest tasting margarita I've had. There was none of the margarita mix taste. You could smell it as soon as it neared your nose. If you have not tried this place in a while, give them another try. I know we will continue to come back. read more

Just started eating here been trying to find a new good medical restaurant since Cozumel on countyline closed down. This was my second visit today! I love the atmosphere and have had good service both times. The food has been very good! Today we ventured out and tried several things! On the vegetarian section I had A. Which was a chalupa, a cheese enchilada & a chili relleno! All very good the chili relleno especially! I also offer rice with queso and a spinach enchilada! Spinach enchilada was excellent I'll definitely order it as my meal next time! My husband had tacos and the fajitas potatoes were had never had that before and I expected like a spud from McAllisters it was cubed potatoes in a cheese sauce served like fajitas, and let me tell u those potatoes were on point!!!!!!! read more

El Charro appears to be under new management. This is good, maybe even great. The place had fallen on hard times with incorrectly filled orders, poor food quality, and indifferent service. Our last takeout was a huge step forward. The service was attentive, the order was correctly filled, and the food was noticeably better. I gave it only 3 stars because it was the first experience better than the 1 star I thought they deserved previously. I'm very encouraged! read more

This is my go-to Tex-Mex in my area. It isn't fancy but I enjoy the friendly service and comforting food. The burritos and enchiladas and such are pretty standard for this type of restaurant. Where El Charro excels are dishes cooked on a cast iron skillet: caso fundido and all manner of fajita variations. The margaritas are nice and not watered down. Finally they have best salsa in the area. It is chunky and clearly made there. It changes a little each time indicating that it is being made fresh. read more

El Charro is a solid tex-mex restaurant, that does offer some authentic style grub, such as cantina/taquera style tacos I had the Molcajete dish, I took a picture of it. Its a lava rock bowl, stuffed with shrimp,chicken, steak, bellpepper, onion, light cheese, with Taquera style salsa! OMG - simply orgasmically delicious! Topped off w/32 fluid oz. Of bud light draft! Wow! The only reason why I gave four stars, was because our last visit they were super slow with the grub. But they do have a nice wait staff and pretty good service 95% of the time. Being from Texas, I have rather high standards when it comes to Tex-Mex cuisine. That being said I have lived in many other parts than just my homeland and understand that you wouldn't typically go for Mexican in the Deep South just as you wouldn't go for Seafood in the Central Plains. The service at El Charro is average, the food and drink come out fast and the servers are friendly. The building is relatively clean and the decor is nice. However, the food and drink is subpar in every category. Drinks are weak and sweet, food is bland, over cooked, and in the case of the ground beef, almost a powder. If you are uncultured in the finer things life and this representation of Tex-Mex fits your standards, by all means go, if not, avoid it like the plague. read more

This was our first time here. We live in Mexico and we're looking for some authentic Mexican food. My wife got steak milanesa, my daughter got carne asada tacos and I got Chilaquiles con pollo en salsa verde. The food was good and man was it done quickly. The waitstaff was very friendly. The only criticisms I have are: 1) I wish they had some other meat options besides beef, chicken and pork. What I mean is that for most authentic Mexican restaurants you might find beef tongue (lengua), tripa (stomach or intestines), chorizo or even pastor (a spicy marinaded pork) especially available for tacos. 2) When the bill came every food item we order the price was increased by a dollar. When I asked our waiter about this he explained that with the prices of meat and other items increasing recently they had to add a $1.00 to every food item. Understandable, but the only place this was conveyed was on a small hand written sign that you could barely read in the somewhat dark entrance way. I think it would be wiser for them to communicate this by placing some sort of sign at every table or a small note on the front of every menu (if they are not going to actually change the prices IN the menu. They had like 3 drinks and none of the food I ordered. They couldn't make any specialty drinks whatsoever and the lady just "ohh haha I can't do that either." I'll start my review by saying I am from Texas, however I do understand the further you get away from Mexico the more diluted the mexican food gets. I say the food was 4 of 5, my wife says 1 of 5. We started with the queso funditios. Tasted pretty good to both of us. Salsa and chips were good too. Next came the antrees: -Sourcream chicken enchillidas: Tasted good but did not look or taste like what I typically get. -Quesidia: Wife said there was not enough cheese to hold everything together. -Chicken Tortilla soup: Quite strange, really just chicken in a water/broth with large fried tortilla. Let's get the positives out of the way first: They take Amex (business travelers know my pain). My server was nice, and didn't blink when I said I wanted fajitas with only vegetables, no sour cream, cheese, tortillas, etc. I got the fajitas "paleo" style with guac. I went there around 5:30 on a Tuesday. These have got to be the worst fajitas I've *ever* had. This is not a "I'm from Texas and any Tex Mex food made outside my beloved state is crap" sort of biased review. People from Indiana should be able to recognize the awfulness. I checked Yelp before I drove up there from downtown Jackson, and saw a lot of glowing reviews. What I didn't do was look at the pictures people had taken of their fajita plates which would have tipped me off sooner, because the meat is not right at all. They clearly do not use skirt or flank steak for their fajita meat, like you're supposed to. It chewed more like eye of round. If you go look at how the eye of round is packaged in the grocery, you'll see "medallions" of meat maybe three to four inches in diameter. 1/4 to 1/2" thick. You're supposed to cook whatever portion of skirt or flank steak (1/2lb, 2lbs, etc.) in one piece, pull it off the grill, let it rest, and then slice it against the grain. That gives you a nice medium pink center, with plenty of juices and good tenderness, not chewy at all. El Charro does one of two things with their fajita beef, best I can figure: Option 1: They take thin pieces of something like eye of round and cook the hell out of them, until there is zero chance of juiciness or pinkness, then slice with the grain. Option 2: They pre-sliced all the meat, again, with the grain, and threw it on the flattop (clearly not grilled). Again, no pink, no juice. What either of these cooking methods results in is meat that isn't begging to fall off your fork. Instead, it turns the meat springy because it's so overcooked. Imagine picking up a piece of steak with your fork. Next, imagine flicking it with your finger. Imagine it rebounding back at you when you flick it, after moving only so slightly. Much of the meat is chopped too small, so that it's difficult to find it in the plate. Smaller than the bell peppers and onions, that's for sure. Chewy, chewy, chewy, chewy. It's bad. If you went to Taco Bell, bought 6 steak soft tacos, pulled the meat out, chopped it up like you were making a cheesesteak, and then cooked it all for another five minutes (which is five minutes and thirty seconds overcooked), you have a rough approximation of what you're dealing with. I'd like to apologize to Taco Bell for even associating them with meat this bad. Shoe leather. A chopped up basketball. A run over football. Got the point? Onto the salsa and guac, which were merely C-/D+ levels of offense against Mexican/Tex Mex. The salsa is made with tomato sauce. Not with canned diced tomatoes doctored up to be salsa, and maybe blended a bit long, but straight tomato sauce. Very little chunkiness to it, almost no heat. I've gotten better salsa in a breakfast bar at the Courtyard Hotel 45 minutes outside of Chicago. Guac: I like it a bit chunky, this was too smooth, and seemed like a cross between guac and guac sauce. You make guac-ish sauce by cutting the avocado with something like sour cream, tomatillos, green onions, etc. That's not actual guac, it's guac sauce. I think it was actually blended tomatillos with some avocado sprinkled in. If you want green sauce with your chips, I guess it would be ok, but if you're looking for some good fats to stick to your fajita that actually taste like avocado, this is not it. read more

As a former server myself, I know the value of customer service. It's not walking by a table saying "we're closed" right at the exact closure time and not actually directed at a table and instead speaking passively aggressively into thin air. Instead. it's kindly explaining that we're closing now, what can we help you with, would you like any boxes, how did you enjoy your meal, etc. In addition, the food was mediocre. I am reminded of why I don't usually visit here and recommend that others do the same. In COVID world we are still in this together, and hospitality is crucial in the restaurant business. read more

I travel often to Jackson for work and this is my favorite restaurant for great Mexican food to go. This isn't the place for you if you're looking for an upscale experience. But what it lacks in ambience, it makes up for in reasonably priced food. The staff is friendly and quick with your order. The salsa is perfect. You cannot go wrong with the fajitas or the build your own combo which let's you pick your favorites from a massive list of options. The queso is a true highlight. read more

The food is great. Service by the waiter was very good. He kept our glasses refilled. He also kept the chip basket refilled. My only complaint is concerning the man at the register taking the money. He stopped waiting on the man in front of us so he could talk on the phone. When it was my turn he stopped waiting on me to go and put menus on the tables. I thought are you kidding me. Came for lunch and was thoroughly disappointed. Ordered the lunch fiesta fajitas and once it arrived the portions were ridiculously small. As I started eating the guacamole was the same consistency as water, the lettuce was brown and wilted and the tortillas were stale. This is one place I can guarantee I will never set foot in again. Do not recommend this restaurant!!! I went out for a girls dinner night to try some "authentic" Mexican food. Unfortunately, this is not the place. First and foremost, our waiter was not too friendly. When we asked for napkins, she brought is a bunch of silverware with the one napkin around it. So we had to open up all the silverware to use the napkin. They started us off with salsa and chips. Really nothing special to it. It's your basic corn chips. I've had better salsa store bought in a jar from Kroger's. The quest cheese dip was really nothing special either. It was quite water for cheese. I ordered the fillet plate which was grilled tilapia with rice and salad. My friends ordered a super burrito and a chicken enchilada I believe with rice and a bean dip. All three of us were highly disappointed with our food. It was completely tasteless. I couldn't even finish it. This restaurant is not true to its name. I don't believe this to be true Mexican food. Chipotle has better Mexican Food than this place. Follow my future reviews as I am on a hunt to find the best Mexican food in Mississippi!!!! read more

Personally, this is my favorite mexican restaurant in the Jackson area. The servers are always exceptionally nice - but yes it can sometimes be slow because they are so busy - but that's not the server's fault. I have eaten here numerous times in the 7 years that I have worked close to El Charro - and I have never once had a complaint about my food. Everything is good. Some favs are the fajitas and the nachos in the back of the menu that have chicken, beef and beans - can't remember the name. Salsa and chips are great and fresh! read more

Wonderful Mexican Food! We visited Jackson and were advised that this was the place to eat excellent food and we were so thrilled at the high quality taste and service. Very reasonable prices made for the family budget. Atmosphere is a bit dated but the taste makes up for any shortcomings to building appearance. Building is fine just not new. I'm not sure why this place gets so much love. I spent $21 for me and my two toddlers. The kids' meals were frozen, not fresh. The nachos I ordered were sloppy and the chips were not restaurant quality. More like generic brand from Kroger. The hostess, an older lady, did not greet me or let me know who my sever would be.
