The Reach is situated high up on the property, above all the other cottages. Each cottage is completely secluded with its own driveway, hot tub, and fireplace or wood burning stove. There are trails on the property, which we greatly enjoyed, and the stargazing at night is spectacular. Cathy and her family were absolutely wonderful hosts. We mentioned we were taking this trip shortly after our anniversary, and we arrived to find a bottle of champagne, chocolates, and roses waiting for us. Oh and they really do leave you farm fresh eggs, fresh baked bread, and plenty of chopped firewood as well! The kitchen has all the gadgets you'd need for basic meals, as well at a Keurig and a little stockpile of coffee and hot cocoa. This was the most relaxing vacation I have ever had, and I nearly cried when it was time to leave. We are already planning our trip back. Location is great too, not too far at all from Black Mountain and Asheville, and a short ride from the Blue Ridge Parkway. This place is worth every single penny, don't let the one or two negative reviews impact to your decision. Please stay here!

We took the cooking class (extra charge) with chef Marti on Sunday, and we made Scottish cottage pie, which was delicious. You not only get to cook, but chef Marti provides background information regarding Scotland. (Map, history, a couple short videos of movies about Scotland, regional dishes to Scotland, etc.) Chef Marti involves everyone in the cooking process. Once our cottage pie had baked in the oven, we sat around the kitchen table and had a bowl of pie, and a salad and bread. (Drinks also) Breakfast was served each morning at 9am, and was very good. Fresh fruit each morning, and yesterday we had oatmeal with apples, bacon, baked egg dish with red peppers, skillet potatoes with homemade ketchup, and really good toast made from some type of French bread. I added some strawberry jam on top, and it was delicious. Today we had homemade sausage with fennel, skillet potatoes, cream of wheat with cranberries, and croissant French toast. There were only 4 of us at breakfast, so there was a lot of food for everyone. I was stuffed...it was so good. The lobby sets the tone for what to expect -- there's so much to take in. From original artwork (including striking curated pieces) to unique jewelry available for purchase, every corner has something interesting to discover from inside and out. The evening piano by the fireplace was such a classy and relaxing touch. The library was fantastic -- I could have sat there reading all night. I also loved the rocking chairs outside, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the atmosphere. There's art thoughtfully placed in every nook and corner, which makes the entire property feel curated and special. My room was fantastic and spotless. As a coffee lover, having my own Nespresso cappuccino machine was a highlight. Complimentary in-room amenities were generous, and the steamer was incredibly convenient -- I was able to steam my jacket before a business event with ease. The staff was amazing, and I appreciated the evening turndown service that prepared the room for a restful night. I would absolutely come back and only wish I could have stayed longer. Cheers!

Arrived and Taken to our table by a young unfriendly and unsmiling hostess. Restaurant was not even 1/4 full. Our server Logan was wonderful!! 5 star service from him. We had a Caesar salad, not enough dressing, needed lemon wedge and no croutons. Some of the lettuce was rusty. Hubby got the lobster fritters that were lacking any real lobster flavor. He gave it 3 stars, good flavor and light but small on size. I got the smoked and seared prawns, they came swimming in sauce and could have been mistaken for soup. They were whole prawns chopped in half with the shell and tail still on and also the heads complete with legs- inedible and impossible to eat....sent back Ambience was beautiful and the aperol spritz drink I had was delicious. I would not be willing to eat here again.

Upon sitting down they asked what we wanted. We asked for menus as spouse likes to pick from what is on tap and I was looking for a mocktail. Barkeep brought us menus. Right as I was about to pick food along with the drinks they told us the kitchen would be closed the whole night. Buried the lead a bit there. It was dinner time and we had spent past few hours driving. They rattled off a list of restaurants and I looked up menus and review on yelp. I feel like a sign or earlier heads up would have been appreciated after waiting 5 mins or so for service at an otherwise empty bar. Our room was 2 away from the elevator. I was hopeful with the plush carpet that most of the sound would be absorbed. It was fairly well quiets with some random bursts of activity. Bed is a bit springy. Requested more pillows before arrival they responded in the app and the pillows were there. Pillows were assorted levels of thickness which my spouse and I needed. I was able to make it work. Body wash is Korres and a nice scent. Main item of note: Pool on the website and app looks as though it is open year round. After an experience a few weeks ago I now call and check. This pool is open seasonably from May - October. I would like if their website and app page could relay that as other hotels are able to. I like the central and walkable location. We would absolutely return. The Spartanburg website by the tourism council has a ton of activities, events etc listed. The look and aesthetic of the rooms, hotel communal spaces and exterior are all pretty, clean and nicely kept. I did like that the hotel as a whole was exactly depicted and expected. Actually, I was a little apprehensive coming here for that reason. The only reason I came was that I knew it was a beautiful area since we had been here in the 90's. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. This morning I went exploring and it is absolutely beautiful. Let's start with the unit. They are small detached houses with cathedral ceilings. The looks are deceiving since the house is terraced on the mountainside. As you enter the front door there is a staircase that goes down to a whole other level which is the master suite. The main level consists of the second bedroom, living room, dining room and kitchen. There even is a washer and dryer as well as a juccusi. I am so happy with the accommodations. Now the amnenities...I went exploring this morning and ended up taking an aqua aerobics class at the pool area. The pool also has a lazy river and a kids' play area. On the way to the pool is a beautiful golf course. I may even try golfing during this stay! For kids there is miniture golf. There are ample tennis courts as well as playgrounds. Of course, there are plenty of lake activities. You can rent pontoon boats, kayaks, jet skis and canoes. I am excited for my kids and grandkids to arrive so that we can enjoy all that Fox Run has to offer.

We should have been leery when the check-in area was at a mobile trailer. We were greeted with a strong whiff of a stale musty odor as soon as we opened the door to the unit. The unit is extremely dated, circa early 1980's architecture, decor, and style. It certainly has not been updated in over 30+ years. It is a split level townhouse with the main bedroom, bath, and laundry room in the bottom level. The kitchen and dining room are on the top level and the second bedroom and bath are on the entrance level where the old parquet floor is peeling up. The walls and ceilings are marked and stained everywhere and cob webs in the corners throughout the unit. Bathroom and kitchen fixtures are all outdated and laminate flooring had seen better days. We only used the refrigerator and decided not to cook because the utensils, dishes, and cookware were limited and appeared dirty. We wore our shoes in the unit at all times because I could tell there was a layer of grim on the floors and the carpeted areas needed shampooing. Then only thing that was recently updated were the wood decks outside of the living area and main bedroom (although, the outdoor furniture was rusted and we didn't trust sitting on them). I would not recommend staying here until this unit is gutted! I do not know if all the units are this horrible or not, I can only speak for Fox Run unit 16. As far as the area goes, the unit is located on an average golf course, otherwise there is not much around and you are in the middle of nowhere. Also, if you want to use any of the amenities at the "resort", you have to pay an additional fee for use of the pool, tennis courts, and fitness center, which we did not. The unit is approximately 30 minutes from anything else including a grocery store. So be prepared to drive for any type of activity.

If you've ever wondered what happens when a campground gives up on being a campground but still…read morecharges resort prices, welcome to Lake James Campground and Marina -- a masterclass in unmet expectations. Let's start with the grounds: mowing appears to be an optional hobby rather than a maintenance task. Weeds regularly reach over a foot tall, yet management is quick to blame everything from the weather to property ownership rather than simply getting the grass cut. It's a perfect metaphor for the whole place -- neglect wrapped in excuses. As for amenities, calling this a resort is comedy gold. There's a small, perpetually crowded pool that's the only semblance of recreation. Beyond that? Nothing. No playgrounds, no activities, no amenities for kids -- unless you count watching the weeds grow as entertainment. The "main office" doubles as a ghost town; there's no store, no supplies, and certainly no service. The showers and changing rooms only operate during pool hours, which means forget early showers, late rinses, or any kind of off-season use. And the mountain side? It's an oven with no tree cover -- a sunbaked slope that feels less like camping and more like punishment. But the crown jewel of disappointment here is the management. The manager, Bridgette, has turned poor hospitality into an art form. Unless you're in her inner circle, expect hostility instead of help. Any mention of the park's shortcomings is met with denial or name-calling -- everyone's a liar except her. Fees appear out of thin air, rules shift without warning, and enforcement feels more like harassment than management. We were even chastised for having kids' toys and outdoor furniture -- apparently joy is a violation here. Before booking, I strongly encourage anyone to read the management's responses to other negative reviews. Notice the pattern -- rather than addressing issues, she calls the reviewers liars. I'm sure this one will be no different. If you're looking for a peaceful camping getaway, keep driving. If you're nostalgic for the charm of a retirement community run by a vindictive HOA that accidentally allows children, you've found your paradise. Lake James Campground and Marina could be something special -- but until the management and maintenance rise to even basic standards, it's a cautionary tale, not a destination.
