ABSOLUTE must for local golfers. The course can be a challenge for beginners. Good people are always present and never a dull crowd.

This course is NOT a SERIOUS golf course. Sure, it's in the Golf Digest Best 100, but how it got there is one of life's mysteries indeed because it has nothing good going for it. Here is a list of the Bad: 1. Pro Shop - Nothing special 2. Driving Range - Inferior to a heavily-used muni course 3. Putting Green - Beats me because it was closed. 4. Directional Signage - Pathetic 5. Greens - Just acceptable, nothing more 6. Ball washers - None 7. GPS - Very humble. The display is only a tad larger than my Galaxy S24. Here is a list of the Ugly ... and I do mean UGLY: 1. You must book on line and pay a $10 booking fee, and then pummel you with incessant emails and texts 2. Confusing tee locations. Call me a purist, but painted farm implements are not better than standard colored tee markers. 3. Blind shots are abundant. On numerous holes you literally cannot see the green even when you are 30 yards in front of it. In one case, their use of a 12-foot-long flag stick did little to help locate the hole. 4. While there are no "sand traps," there is an overwhelming number of "waste areas," so many and so large that you are permitted to drive your cart in them. And forget hitting cleanly from them because they are 40% sand, 40% packed dirt, and 20% ROCKS. 5. Bugs! Geeze the bugs!! Buzzing gnats were in my face (and ears and eyes) for the entire round. 6. Hazardous drop-offs from fairway to waste area. Exercise serious caution getting into and out of these suckers. Falling is a definite risk. And as a final point of pain, the Ranger insulted me when I calmly told him I did not like the course by asking me if I was married, then telling me that he felt sorry for my wife. Clearly, I did not like my experience, but fortunately it will not be repeated because Hell will freeze over before I return because I feel exactly like a guy below who wrote that he would have had more fun setting two $100 bills and a $50 on fire in the parking lot. Yep! I agree!!

I am 78 years old and still blessed to be healthy enough to walk 18 holes most days. That day was extremely hot and humid, mid 90's with high humidity. There are no water coolers on the golf course so I carried a bottle of water with me. I came in at the turn and mentioned to the pro shop attendant that it was tough that day and some water on the course would be helpful. He was very understanding and said he would pass the information on. I refilled my bottle and actually got a second one to carry. I got dehydrated on the back nine and actually felt some dizziness. I came back by the pro shop after my round and again mentioned the need for water on the course. The pro shop attendant again was very sympathetic. There was another person behind the counter at the time (I later found out was the head pro) who spoke up and said "we will never have water coolers on this course, they are unsanitary and we have a refreshment cart going around that you could have purchased water from". I told him we saw the refreshment cart one time all day, on our 11th hole right after I had restocked at the turn. His response was "I guess you should have carried more water with you". This kind of customer service is totally not acceptable and left me with a very bad overall feeling about The Challenge. I will continue playing there occasionally as my regular traveling group goes there a few times a year, but the head pro needs to get some training in customer service.

The course was a combination of Poa Annua and 417 hybrid Bermuda. It appears the greens keeper is trying to rid the Poa Annua but is not making progress on the greens. The fairways are not getting water and are bare with sparse growth ... that leads to the next problem .. One thing is that the greens are all very sloped. Combined with firmness (a strategy to prevent lingering ball marks ) and speed along with holes placed on 4 degree slopes and you have the worst "miniature golf " nightmare you can imagine. With wind it was a replay of the 2004 US Open at Shinnecock. With One putt, I barely missed the putt on the high side. Once the ball stopped -- the wind started it rolling .. rolling until off the green. I very lightly tapped a 3 footer that rolled 18' to the low side of the hole. Now imagine hitting irons from sparsely covered fairways with bare spots and getting little backspin to stop an approach shot. This all resulted in A very frustrating day. I have no doubt the new ownership will bring this Pinehurst course to playable conditions; however, right now Spring 2025 it is not a playable course.
