I went to Dr Hwang for two procedures, a colonoscopy and a sigmoidoscopy. The first time I went to Newport Beach, the second time to Irvine. Both centers were very efficient and the care I received was excellent. Dr. Hwang was cordial, and I trusted her completely. Why go anywhere else? Waited about 2 months to get an appointment (took the day off of work for this appointments) office staff call to confirm my appointment, then they call the DAY OF My appointment to tell me Dr. Hwang does not take my insurance and is out of network ! My insurance calls them to let them know my insurance does indeed cover the office visit then they tell my insurance that the Doctor is no longer working out of that office ??? Seriously ? Why the heck would you wait until the day of my appointment to tell me this wishy washy inconsistent information??? I appreciate speaking to her as I was able to find out that there were several other providers under her medical group that my auth would cover. I had asked her receptionist yesterday, but was told the other doctors were in another office and I would likely need a new auth. I have Dr Hwang for a while since she was at USC. Even though I live in LA I decided to go all the way to OC and let me tell you it was worth it. I was referred to Dr. Hwang by my surgeon, Dr. Rad. From my initial call to schedule an appointment and speaking with Cammy, I felt "at ease." It's always hard going to see a specialist as you may not be sure they understand your concerns and feeling comfortable with the Physician. My initial appointment was supposed to be a "TeleHealth" one due to COVID - 19. I wasn't really keen on it due to my issues but Dr. Hwang was highly recommend by Dr. Rad and I trust him implicitly and agreed to the "TeleHealth" visit. Again, from my initial contact, I was thoroughly impressed. Calls were returned almost immediately as were emails. Two days before my "TeleHealth" visit, I received a phone call saying Dr. Hwang could see her patients in person and was asked if I wanted to go in, I immediately said "YES!" When I checked in I was greeted by the most friendly, Cammy! I didn't have to wait long to be brought back to the exam room. The nurse (I don't recall her name ), took my vitals and although I could not see her entire face due to having wear a mask, I could tell she was smiling as I could hear it in her voice and see it in her eyes. Before I knew it, Dr. Hwang came in along with her Nurse Practitioner, Richard. Dr. Hwang made me feel at ease right away. She was already knowledgeable about my health history - and it's a long one. (Many times I feel health records aren't always read). I was impressed on how much she knew about me and felt like I was already an established patient! Dr. Hwang explained everything to me simply and really took the time to get to know me as a person! She had prescribed a medication for me and there had been a problem with my Pharmacy as they said they did not receive the new prescription. I called Dr. Hwang's office back and literally within a half hour, Richard, the Nurse Practitioner, resolved the problem and my prescription was actually ready! Richard even called back to let me know he had remedied the problem - note, he called after hours to boot. Even he was surprised to know that I had already picked up my prescription! Dr. Hwang's office was that quick making sure was "taken care of," prior to the long weekend! Vanessa was essential in scheduling a procedure for me. I wasn't even home and she was already calling to offer days and times for me to choose from. I was immediately emailed the information that I would need! I know this is a long review, but there are several people - people who offer their care to make it so! Everyone I was in contact with was friendly, professional, and offered genuine care! I've never doubted I was in the right place since the day Dr. Hwang was the GI on call when I was hospitalized. When I was hospitalized for 12 days she came to visit almost every day and the day's she didn't visit she called to check on me and included my wife in every aspect of my treatment. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Hwang. She's incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate, and personable. She exudes a very warm feeling. I've suffered from ulcerative colitis for 40 years and have seen my share of GI doctors. She is by far the most knowledgeable. For the first time in my life, I have hope that i will be able to live a normal life, despite my colitis. I'm well on my way due to medication changes she's provided me with. Dr. Hwang is a wonderful doctor. I've been battling UC for several years now. My local doctors weren't very concerned and didn't do much to help me, so I decided to travel 3 hours to see Dr. Hwang and she was amazing! She helped me get into remission and I've stayed there for almost a year now. She's very knowledgeable and caring. I will gladly drive the 3 hours to see her versus any local doctors. I didn't have a good overall experience with Dr. Hwang's office. I called to make an appointment, and received a time/date for a zoom meeting. Turns out, this was not with the doctor, but rather with the doctor's assistant. We spoke for about 10 minutes, and at the end I elected to postpone the appointment due to their COVID test requirement. In the following weeks, I received a bill from the office charging $250 for my 10 minute call. I made an attempt to resolve this with the office, which ended up taking over 4 months. I felt that the front office was unprofessional in not returning my calls or addressing the issue. In the end, I was disappointed that Dr. Hwang didn't waive the fee, knowing that she didn't provide services for that fee. It seemed very greedy. No one should be charged $250 for a 10 minute conversation. There are many doctors to choose from, so I would not recommend using Caroline Hwang. read more

Dr. Hwang has been my doctor for over 3 years and I can't speak highly enough of her. I have a 10+ medical history and the first day we met she knew everything about it. She literally walked into the room quizzing me about it. She's professional, passionate, compassionate, and intelligent. She listens and allows you to be part of the conversation. But most importantly, to me, she's open to discussing new treatments and always ready to do what's best, with me along every step of the way. She seems to always be available via email, so it's easy to get in touch with questions. I've emailed her dozens of times with both simple questions and sudden requests and she has always been there to help, whether providing a simple answer or scheduling an appointment immediately. To me that speaks volumes- I know that if I need her she'll be there for me. Furthermore, she's knowledgeable of current and upcoming treatments and ready to educate when I ask my plethora of questions. She's not afraid to try out new medicines when something isn't working. I take my health very seriously and expect to be an active participant in my treatment with my doctor's. I ask questions, explore and study new and alternative medicines, and like to contact my doctors with questions/comments and expect them to reply in a reasonable time. Dr. Hwang constantly exceeds my expectations. I learned this early on and am pleased that she's never let me down. She's an incredibly talented doctor with a fantastic customer service attitude. OK, imagine you have a stomach ache and you call this doctor's office. They will ask for your DOB, previous medical diagnosis and previous physician before anything else. Doctor Caroline's assistant will then tell you that the doctor must "approve" you first before you're allowed to book an appt with her... I find that absurd! First of all if you knew your diagnostic you would not be trying to book an appt with her, correct? Second of all, let's say you had seen another doctor on the past, and you have a Platinum PPO and are looking for a second opinion for your stomach ache, you should be able to see the doctor, period. But, no! She still needs to approve you to see her first... Shouldn't it be your right to make that decision? So, if you want or not to change doctors? What if you are looking for a second opinion? I came to you, doctor Caroline, because you are on the list of the so called "the best gastroenterologist" here on Yelp and your offices are close to DTLA. It should be my decision, not yours, to book an appt. Only, after examining me is when you should be able to make a decision if I should or not be treated by other medical specialist, based on my exams, on fact. Not simply "by choose and picking" by my name, DOB or even if you had access to my previous medical record, you should still see me to discuss further options. Or tell me in person "I can not help you with your medical condition". I'm sure you know that patients medical condition change from time to time. My words to describe your unwillingness to assist a first time patient are: unethical conduct! You take ZERO star from me! read more

I first saw her 5 years ago. I was 103 lbs & very sick. My body wouldn't take food st all. She put me on Stelara. I hate being on medicine but she saved my life. She has been my GI Doctor for 2-1/2 years now, and she has been nothing but professional and caring. She has been the perfect balance of aggressive and patient with my treatment, and is always available for questions and concerns. When I was first diagnosed I didn't know much about Crohn's disease, and she is always willing to sit and educate me about the disease. Her efforts and work with CCFA shows just how much she is personally committed to bettering her patients lives. I often use Yelp to review and find new restaurants, but in this case my experience with Dr. Hwang has been so personal, thorough, informative, and professional that I had to write a review. Importantly , she was helpful with both psychological and physiological aspects . Terrible staff! My mother is a fairly new patient and due to the high RX pricing we have asked the doctor to prescribe an alternative RX. It took them almost three weeks to get back to us after more than 6 attempts to call the office, leave messages, and call again. Terrible follow through. Even the Pharmacy attempted several times by calling, and faxing. They gave up after several tries and told us to contact the doctor. After complaining, we finally got answers an alternative med. Now my mother has run out of meds and the pharmacy can't refill without the doctors authorization. The same story repeats again. The pharmacy just called us and told us that we need to contact the doctor. They gave up! They attempted to call and fax the doctors office and they haven't received any response! Meanwhile my mother is in pain and waiting for the refill! She has been waiting patiently and now has to find out that she needs to chase the office for a refill! DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU EXPECT GOOD FOLLOW THROUGH, OR IF YOU DEPEND ON YOUR MEDS!!! We are going to change doctor for my mother. We can't be baby sitting her meds and chase after the staff for responses! So far this is the worst doctors office anyone in my family has experienced. We though that by being part of USC, that we would be getting better care. As you can see not all the time :( read more
