We can't say enough about the wonderful service and informative staff at Carol's Critters! My son wanted pet fish for his 7th birthday. Carol and other employees provided us with a detailed explanation of how to care for fish properly, which fish are compatible and why, and they kindly answered all our questions (my son had a ton!) Unfortunately, a few of our fish (through no fault of Carol's) didn't survive the transition period into the new tank. Without hesitation, Carol tested a water sample we provided, replaced the deceased fish without charge, and kindly reassured my grieving son that he did nothing wrong and that "sometimes these things just happen." Trying to get a chinchilla for my little boy for Christmas and found out they don't keep them in stock and order them as desired which I think would be great if they shared this information on their website when they list chinchillas as something they sale...well I decided to not order it at the time and try to find somewhere that may have one in stock since they couldn't get it in til after Christmas...I couldn't find one in time so starting the day after Christmas and for the next two days after that I've called their shop no less than 7 or so times per day during business hours with the website saying they're open and have yet to get anyone answer the phone and no way of leaving a message..I understand that it gets busy at times and people are unable to answer but that's why I focused majority of my calls in the last 30-45 minutes of business hours when typically it's died off and more than likely someone would be in the office something counting tills or whatever other closing routines they have to do...and at very least it would be nice if they at least had an answering machine or voice-mail setup so you could leave a message and possibly get a return call read more

My boyfriend and I found a flee infested kitten today and I didn't have the heart to surrender her, we saw fleas and ran to petco, the worker there suggested we go to carols critters because they have products that are more natural and would have been better for a kitten as small as she is. My boyfriend and I made the 20 minute trip into college town and we were very pleasantly greeted, while the store was very small the worker we spoke with was very experienced and knowledgeable about the products in the store she gave us very good recommendations. Terrible experience this afternoon. Entered the store, which was incredibly over crowded and not following social distancing guidelines AT ALL. Several people were not wearing masks and were shopping without interruption, however when I entered a young man who would only identify himself as Sebastian (refused to provide a last name) asked if I had a mask. When I politely informed him that I have a medical condition he YELLED at me to "get out of HIS store" and proceeded to say "Second time today!" sadly implying that he had treated others with a medical condition in the same way. It was obvious that Sebastian was not the owner of the store and had no right to act with such hostility toward a polite, potential new customer. I have filed complaints with the BBB and several State organizations who will be following up to investigate the illegal discrimination and blatant lack of social distancing as well as failure to limit capacity in the small, crowded store. I took my business to a nearby pet store and spent $300. Carol's Critters lacks adequate management and I am disappointed at the all-around hateful and hypocritical environment provided. read more

This shop is a unique pet store and probably the best in Tallahassee. I enjoy coming here and looking at their wide variety of pets. My problem is the wrong care of Axolotls. Every time they get Axolotls in they put them on rocks, which is a swallowing hazard. The other day I saw an Axolotl in the tank that was unusually round. Either it in fact swallowed rocks or it was housed with males and is about to lay eggs (males and females shouldn't be kept together, the males will breed the females to death.) Once again I enjoy this shop but I know the owner is aware that rock substrate is a no no for Axolotls but they do it anyway. Pet stores are here to educate pet owners but when they operate wrongfully then they aren't properly educating pet owners. read more

Honestly one of the more sad experiences at any pet stores I've ever had. Animals are all kept in tiny cages, the girl who helped was friendly, although she noticed there was a sick rat in the cage with the other rats (not feed rats, but actual pet rats) and told us about it before putting the rat right back in the cage. She told us that they commonly get respiratory illness and that they can spread it amongst themselves and other little critters, but she did not separate the unhealthy rat. Nearly every rat seemed sick. I will say that it seems like they take good care of the reptiles and fish they keep, but seriously sad on the small mammal path. read more

I am very unhappy. I have just bought a new 5-gallon fish tank. I am a first-time aquarium owner and I was so excited to stock my tank. I had been visiting Carol's every day for the last three days to look at the fish. All of the staff were helpful and made the experience fun. Today I went in to actually purchase some fish and I was shocked at how RUDE and EXTREMELY CONDESCENDING one of the staff members was. She ruined my entire fish tank experience. She offered to make suggestions for stocking then made me feel terrible for not knowing which types of fish can live together. She is a miserable bitch. If she is so obsessed with fish tanks, she should go live in one and leave everyone to enjoy learning about fish. read more

Absolutely awful customer service. Carol sold me a baby crested gecko a few weeks ago, and he was doing fine and eating well and adjusting just fine. Carol never gave me any instructions as to how to take care of him, just sold me the gecko, and told me not to mess with his tail as it could fall off. I found out everything I knew about taking care of a crested gecko from google. I wake up today and see that my gecko is looking sick and call in to ask them what to do, as I received NO INSTRUCTIONS WHATSOEVER as to how to take care of him or make sure he was healthy. The employee on the phone is super caring and understanding and tells me other people have been having issues with their crested geckos as well, maybe because no one is given ANY INSTRUCTIONS and they are TOO YOUNG to be sold. I go into the store to talk to Carol and she immediately has a horrible attitude with me, interrupting me after asking questions about how I take care of him and then acting as if I should have telepathically known that I needed to mist my gecko more often than I was. She then gives me store credit instead of a refund and tells me that I can get an animal "less delicate than a baby crested gecko." If the animals are so delicate and young, maybe DON'T SELL THEM? Especially with NO INSTRUCTIONS TO THEIR OWNERS AT ALL? Awful customer service. I will not be returning. read more

My wife and I came by last week looking for a companion for our existing pet rat as they get lonely and her cage mate just passed. We were told they had only feeders and that there were "some pets in the back that will be ready in a week." Lewis said "they are healthier and handled more" and would be "a better option," then showed us three rats, two we said we would be back for. Lewis said to "check back in a week." We waited 6 days and came back. We were told those rats have been sold and "we'll have more ready in a week." "That's what you said last week before you showed us the two we fell in love with and said we'd be back for." Homegirl just shrugged her shoulders. No integrity whatsoever. read more

This place would not allow me to look at the animals to decide what I wanted without giving me problems as soon as I walked in the store. I said nothing to anyone and did not ask them a thing. A woman walked up to me and got a really nasty attitude with me and scoffed at me because she asked if I needed help and I tole her no im just looking. Then the manager came up and put me out of the store. I came from out of town to get a pet because they were not available elsewhere in town. I am so disappointed with their treatment of me. The absolute best pet store in the area. I love the large selection of more speciality reptiles Carol offers. The animals always appear well taken care off, and you can even see the feeding schedule of the smaller snakes tapped to their enclosure. Carol herself is very knowledgable and helpful. purchased my snake from her about four years ago, and he's amazing. I only buy my feeders from her, as I don't want to support the chains, and her prices are good. Never had an issue with her frozen selection. I also purchase my superworms for my bearded dragon from her, and they are perfect everytime. read more

More than 15 years ago, I purchased a Toy Fox Terrier from Carol's Critters. This December he will be 16! I just had a full work up done on him, and the Vet could not believe how healthy he is. His bloodwork, scans, and Xrays were perfect. She actually told me he has the insides of a 2-year old dog, and that she wouldn't be surprised if he lives past 20! I'm so happy to have this little man rocking out with me after all these years. He was an impulse buy that my 20-year-old-self just couldn't resist, and now at 36, is still with me! I know they have cat, dog, and bird supplies too but not in the quantity or variety that one of the bigger pet stores will have. Carol and her store are absolutely wonderful! One of the only stores in town that I have been able to find food and other products for sugar gliders at. She is so helpful and if she doesn't have the item she is always more than happy to order it for you or show you where to find it. I love this store and the staff so much that even though she has offered to give me the catalogue for the distributor so I can order the food directly, (essentially cutting her out of the sale and saving me money) I still choose to go through her so I can help support the business. I highly highly recommend this location! They have all kinds of items from cages and accessories to care products and food for a variety of animals (fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals). They also have a variety of pets for sale. Even if you don't need anything, it's worth just popping in to say hello. read more

Carol'a Critters is a cool place. I work at petsmart so I go there for my dogs food because I get an employee discount and petsmart just has higher quality dog and cat food, but for my snake, I always go to Carol's. PetsMart won't sell live feeder mice, and I understand why, but my California king snake is stubborn and will only eat live mice, so I have to go to Carol's. They have hedgehogs and ferrets too, which my PetsMart doesn't have, BUT they sell purebred puppies which I think is immoral. There are too many homeless dogs out there, and PetsMart won't sell dogs or cats, they only have adoptions from shelters, which is the more humane thing to do. Carol's employees are really nice and helpful though! read more

I was in shock at this store. For most of the reptiles the animal is in the appropriate cage/environment but the way they keep some of the animals shows how little they know about what they're selling. The sugar gliders were the worst problem I saw. They were being fed the wrong food, wrong size cage, kept alone (which causes depression and aggression), and slept in broken and torn up pouches. Only one glider was given a wheel and it was falling apart. I overheard the owner complaining about how one of the gliders wouldn't eat so I suggested to feed them banana (much healthier and cheaper than the yogurt they were trying to feed her) which they responded to by being rude and dismissing my advice. Sugar gliders are a difficult pet to take care of and if a store isn't ready to take care of their needs then they shouldn't be selling them. The products they sell at the store are also sold on exotic nutrition for MUCH less. read more

While yes, their staff is very nice and helpful, unfortunately their knowledge is very outdated. I came home with a ball python from them a month ago and it is HORRIBLY aggressive (and balls rarely ever are), it has mites which can be life threatening to a snake and is a result of poor loving conditions, and it also has pneumonia and respiratory problems - another result of unsanitary living conditions. Yes they have pretty and exotic animals but SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. It has been very stressful and expensive to get these problems taken care of. Also, their feeder mice are about $1.50 and if you were to buy a mouse from them it's way more expensive than $1.50. Why? Because they cram all those feeder mice together for them to get infections and then infect the snakes. This place is dirty and is causing much stress on all their animals. read more

Today I visited Carol's for the first time and decided to buy two pet rats from them. The staff was nice enough at first... but then I requested to see some younger rats from the back. The girl working with me (who I found out later was new) got the approval from another supervisor (also female) to take me into the back where they are basically breeding feeder rats/"pretty" feeder rats to sell as pets. I fell in love with two young rats, despite the fact that the living conditions weren't the best (they were on cedar bedding with males and females mixed in). It was very stupid of me but I got caught up in the moment and decided to buy them (also feeling like I might be saving them-- not the best decision). As soon as I got them home in their new cage I noticed both of them were sniffling and wheezing uncontrollably. They also scratched more and smelled worse than other rats I've been around. I called the store and spoke to their manager (male) who told me that those rats ARE feeder rats that HAVE NOT had any antibiotics. They don't give antibiotics to rats until they decided to put them up front (at which point theyre usually too old to sell) and gave me two options: A) return them for a refund or B) buy the antibiotics from the store myself and treat them. He would not give me the antibiotics for free to treat the sick rats he sold me. I'm very disgusted with this store, because I really thought that going to an independently owned pet store might have better animal living conditions. Not only are all their rats sick with respiratory infections, but the living conditions of the feeder rats and mice were sickening. Why would anyone want to feed their snake a diseased and infected mouse? And any of those illnesses can spread easily to other animals. Overall I'm very disappointed that they didn't tell me the truth about the rats they were selling me and the living conditions of those animals behind closed doors. I really want to file a health code violation against this place. Don't give them your business-- the people at Petco are just as knowledgeable if not more. THEY ALSO BUY THEIR DOGS FROM PUPPY MILLS. Nothing about this pet store is humane. read more
