WHAT I LOVE: + STAFF: A previous reviewer said it best: the people who work there are real people and they really care. Every time I walk in, at the very least I get a friendly hello, and every so often whoever is sitting behind the front desk will strike up a little small talk while I swipe my key card. They also made touring the facility and eventually signing up for a membership a total breeze, which is not always the case when joining a new gym. + CLEANLINESS: There's always enough spray bottles and towels to wipe down equipment, and the staff does a great job making rounds to keep things tidy. The women's bathroom is always clean, and unlike so many other gyms, Carp Athletics doesn't have the issue of lingering, musty smells-- huge plus! + EQUIPMENT: Considering the size of this space, I'm actually quite surprised that they have as much as they do. There's a good selection of cardio machines, loads of free weights / dumbbells, and your standard machines and racks. + YOGA ROOM: This is upstairs and is one of my favorite parts of the gym. They recently painted the room a dark color, adding to the peacefulness of the space. This is also where the fitness classes occur throughout the week, though their class schedule doesn't jive up with my work schedule so I can't speak about the classes at all. + PRICE: When compared to other gyms in the area, membership at Carp Athletics is extremely reasonable. The cost of a couple's membership for me and my husband was cheaper than a single membership at some other gyms I was looking at. My only gripe: - SPACING OF EQUIPMENT: As noted previously, Carp Athletics has a great variety of equipment, but due to the constraints of the space, they've had to get a little creative with the placement of some machines. Most days, this isn't an issue, but when you visit during an especially busy hour it can be difficult to maneuver around everyone / everything. Loved the old-school and rugged vibe of this gym. Caters to the locals and tourists of Carp. I was visiting the area for a few days and needed to train cleans and squats. Carp Athletics had everything I needed for cleans. I trained outside in the sun and fresh air. They had bumper plates for those who train weightlifting or CrossFit. $15 for a day pass. read more

Here's how much this gym costs: Monthly Fee: $50 Day Pass: $10 Fitness 19 costs: Monthly Fee: $12 Day Pass: $5 Though this gym has a wide range of equipment for you to get a solid workout done, it lacks in size, cleanliness, and amenities. The equipment was dirty, rusted and show signs that it hasn't been properly maintained. Space is limited making free weight use difficult during a busy day. There is no pool/spa, sauna, locker room or fitness staff to help with exercises. All of which fitness 19 has. I don't recommend this gym nor do I see myself coming here again. read more

This is a nice gym which excellent work out amenities. Problem is that it is the only gym in town so you have to work with it. The bummer is their hours, it would be nice for them to be open later but the great thing is you never have to wait for a machine, there are always plenty available and the atmosphere is clean and friendly. Lots of tvs everywhere and music is always playing. Some of the machines even have television with cable, simply plug in your headphones and you are good to go. Love that they give you towels and that the front desk area is always clean and tidy. The employees are the same 3-4, and they are always so nice and cheery. read more

The gym has everythign you need from cardio, machines, free weights, classes and trainers, The gym is small and hot inside. Overall it's the best you will find in Carp unfortunately. read more

It's a great little athletic club. Convenient location and pretty awesome employees and trainers. It's perfect for a set of weights and free style machines. The city already has the best running spots around. No need to run inside. The Carpinteria bluffs are around the corner and the fun hiking trail in Montecito is miles down the road. The local swim spot is down the street. ie.. jump in da ocean my friend. Peaceful and relaxing you're work out is done. read more

It is difficult to accept the trivial complaints I see on this place. How many small towns in America even have a gym? Let alone one as nice as Carpinteria Athletics. Yes, I agree it is not perfect but neither is my wife. I am a visitor and just completed my first workout here......I will return. By the way I found the pricing to be extremely fair, the premises neat and tidy and a good selection of iron and machines. read more

I'm torn about this review, because this could very easily be a fantastic and modern gym with just a small amount of effort from the owner/employees. The equipment is up to par (though some of it is spaced too closely together) and the facility itself is a nice size for our town, but the operation practices of this place do not prioritize cleanliness, comfort, or customer service (things I really appreciate in a gym that costs $600/year). Most often, there are only two spray bottles available to clean up equipment. On week nights it is not uncommon to find 15-20 people in the gym at one time so this is not sufficient. Additionally, they do not leave out clean wipe rags to clean up after you use the equipment (I sweat, ALOT). You have to ask someone at the counter for these rags, or take the initiative to grab them from under the front counter desk yourself. This discourages people from cleaning up after themselves and is a pretty embarrassing practice. It is like asking for toilet paper in my opinion. An easily solvable issue/practice - one that I've mentioned to at least two employees with no results. They used to provide disposable disinfectant wipes in a dispenser, but I was told the dispenser fell off the wall and they couldn't figure out how to put it back on. In the same week, they managed to install a 60" tv 12ft into the air, go figure. I guess they thought it was an expendable amenity and chose not to replace the dispenser. One of the biggest issues I had this summer was the lack of air conditioning. When you sign up for this gym and see the nice HVAC system installed do not be fooled. They do not use it. Even on hot days it is rare to find it on. The gym doesn't have great natural ventilation so it always hotter inside than outside...not using the AC is just absurd. I asked one of the female employees what their air conditioning policy was, and she said they didn't have one. It just depends on who is working. We are paying for a modern gym, use the air conditioning. OK? The 3rd treadmill from the front of the gym is still broken after being a member for almost a year. I have told two employees and the owner about the issue. After about a mile of running the machine abruptly loses all power. For some reason, the owner does not see this as a liability, but I do. I no longer use that treadmill, but watched it happen to a patron last night and it is dangerous. I did have a major issue with one of the employees, but the owner corrected this and I will not fault him for that. However, the employee still attends the gym so I just give up. If you are picky, if you appreciate great customer service, etc. the convenience factor of this gym will eventually wear off and you will find yourself joining the YMCA in Montecito for $10 dollars more a month (they have a pool!). I'm to that point. All of the small things add up, ya know? read more

Carpinteria Athletics is a fantastic local gym here. During my short stay, the staff was very welcoming and knew members by name. There's all the equipment here to do the big lifts (bench, squat, and deadlift) as well as some unique stuff like heavy tires and battle ropes outside. There's a set of dumbbells in the back, a yoga/stretch studio upstairs, and personal small lockers. The gym isn't too busy and the wait times aren't bad at all. The owner is an honest dude and the staff is either helping someone or cleaning the equipment. Probably the best gym in Carpinteria for the price and environment. read more

Carpinteria Athletics is a great local gym. The hours are great, and I kid you not, there's always room. The staff is helpful and it's a great resource for finding a trainer to your liking. But I gotta tell you what really rocks the clock. There are two classes that are vital for a complete workout. Checkout the Foundation class. If you think you know your body, you don't. And there's Sunday yoga. Ever do yoga to Miles Davis? If you have, adopt me. Bottom line? This gym is worth a visit. I can recommend it highly. DO ONE MORE SET! read more

This little gym is a gem! My husband and I loved working out here while we lived in Carpinteria. The staff is awesome, personable, and are always making conversation or cleaning the place. It's small, but rarely felt overcrowded. Other members are friendly and clean up after themselves. Unfortunately we don't live in Carp anymore, so are no longer members. It's exactly what you imagine when you think of a gym. It's got all the machines you need and a normal complement of weights. That's fine. Problem is, the membership fees are OUTRAGEOUS. They price hiked recently and the new fees are asininely high. I'll be voting with my wallet and leaving immediately, after a year or so of happy membership. Sorry. Avoid unless you're the monopoly guy with big bags of cash. read more

My wife and I are fitness experts and I run a nutrition and fitness business myself. So our bar for gyms is pretty high. When we moved to Carpinteria we were disappointed that they didn't have a larger gym... But man did we fall in love with this place. It's small enough to feel like your own personal gym. And the people who work there are real people, not pretentious college students or fitness gurus. They're real, and they really care. We had to move recently, and with the move back to a corporatized gym. Impersonal and stuck up. We miss this place dearly. read more
