Let me start off by saying I loved Carrera's Grill. Ate inside the restaurant many times and my go to flautas were very tasty. Today I ordered takeout for the first time and it was by far the worst. I ordered my usual flautas no lettuce or sour cream. What I got was a hot mess. Flautas covered in lettuce, sour cream and soggy! I may eat inside again but I will never order take out. Entrance is not obvious however you walk through a nice patio to the automatic doors. The dining area is very brightly lit...no ambiance. I ordered the spinach enchilada with refried beans and rice with a sweet tea. The tea was excellent along with the beans and rice, however the enchilada was not quite there. The red sauce that was dished on top tasted like it was poured directly out of the can...not very tasty. The wait staff was excellent and didn't hover. Can't give it a 5 star just because the main dish was a bit disappointing. read more

Came yesterday. Total garbage. The ground beef burrito was not at all what it is in Covington a few days ago. Covington was amazing. When I came this time it was total garbage. The dude that waited on us during lunch was lazy and inattentive. Drinks left empty. Food not blazing hot. The red sauce on the enchiladas was bland and lifeless. Chips and salsa were fresh, delicious and really good. But man was my La Bamba flat and lifeless. The ground beef taco was good but wasn't picadillo like Covington. The beef burrito and the enchilada were awful. We will not come back for a while and will opt to drive to Covington. The enchilada with steak plate was even better than this store in Slidell. Was seasoned and cooked medium. I really hope the Slidell store can get to the level of Covington stores. Both locations in Covington are on point. Going today for taco Tuesday. But Slidell location; I will try you again in a few months. You went from all star to flop. read more

I am not only a born and raised Mexican but I also come from Texas which I hope qualifies me to be a decent critic of Mexican Food. While Carreta's does have the ambience and feel was indeed of Hispanic theme, I felt the staff to be lacking the hospitality found in other establishments. Even though it was a Monday afternoon and not too busy, it took the waiter more than ten minutes to ask us our drink order. This would set the tone for the rest of the meal. Apetizer came out late. Food came out late. Drinks were late to be refilled. the food itself was not that great. I asked for a chimichanga. My wife had a cheese enchilada, and the kids shared a chicken and cheese quesadilla. My chimichanga was not well done. My wife's enchilada was little more than melted shredded cheese and the sauce was floury. The kids chicken was chewy and had a funny taste. long story short, we all had stomachaches and a mild case of food poisoning. read more

Yuck! Is the first thing that comes to mind. Service was good, but the food..not so much. We have had Carretas at other locations over the years but this location was not good, not even ok. The chips were warm but the salsa smelled sour. The tortilla soup was bland and like warm. Our lunch taste old, and re heated. We had the fajitas and the veggies smelled spoiled. I think the food was leftover from the night before and re used. Just nasty and will never go again. Same thing happened about 3 years ago, just before the lunch rush! So I love a good AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant, and I must say they did a pretty good job for the most part. I didn't get the margaritas (but I've heard they are really good here), I've been to the location in Metairie a few years back but I couldn't really remember the food. I'm ver glad that I wasn't disappointed. So I got the chicken,steak, and shrimp fajitas, the only thing I would change is more meat verses grilled veggies. But the overall taste was delicious. It comes with the beans and rice, now I'm not a big refried beans gal and there is one other establishment that I went to and the beans were Mmm good. These weren't bad they just went anything about the taste that stuck out. The staff was very friendly. I will tell you that the food comes out quite quickly which is nice when you are starved. Trash. By far the worst excuse for Mexican food I've had since living in Louisiana. The food tasted like recycled Taco Bell garbage. Refried beans from a can and enchilada sauce that was little more than watered down tomato soup with some chile powder sprinkled in. Well got here and everything seemed fine off the bat. Good atmosphere, accommodating table for our big party. Service was less than mediocre, after waiting various amounts of time for our waiter to come back to refills drinks, take our order, and very rarely if ever came to check and see if we needed anything. Fortunately the food came out quickly and was delicious but it was like after we got our food we were no longer a concern. Nearly impossible to get our waiters attention if we attempted to wave him down, did better asking the guys that were bringing out food for anything. Don't know if it was just this one server but management needs to address serving quality. read more

On the way back to Texas from Alabama, had the craving for Mexican food so we stopped here. Not impressed at all. The food wasn't good and was over priced. This is one of the best mexican restaurants I have been to. My wife loves it too. Portions were large and a soda was the size of a big gulp. The staff was fast and courteous. Carretas is continuously so super good! I could not recommend it enough! The prices are average for Mexican cuisine, but the food has never been anything less than great! They give good portion sizes and the staff is very friendly. Every now and then they may take awhile with the food but it is not a frequent issue by any means. read more

The beans on the vegetarian menu contain LARD (beef fat). When I asked the server they lied and said they do not. After eating there many times I finally got a server who was honest. This could be a serious problem to people with dietary restrictions for health, religious, and/or ethical reasons. If they lied to me about what is in my food, what are they putting in your food? The food was not that great. We had to wait a while before getting served on and the appetizers and the meals came out about the same time. My wife didn't get time to enjoy the appetizers at all. I felt rushed to eat before my food got cold. The management came out to ask how it was and I told him it was bad service the food came out together instead of allowing the customer to enjoy the appetizers. The appetizers we ordered we sitting on the table 3/4 full because we didn't eat them and the manager didn't even offer to take those off the bill. I like Carreta's. I just found out that they have Happy Hour all day Wed. But it only includes Margaritas. The food is decent and I have always had great servers. Since I don't eat meat and I can't eat cheese, my options here are limited. But they do have some great fish tacos. I know, I know, fish tacos sound gross, but they are really good. They would probably be even better if the fish was grill instead of deep fried. I love how the booths in this place are huge. You can fit a lot of folks in them. Food was not bad, service was very good. The food was good for a place that is not near Mexico. I'm used to Mexican food from Southern California, so the food was not what we were used to. The carnitas were pretty dry, the beans tasted like they were from a can and the tortillas were from the grocery store. We are used to made in house tortillas and chips. Overall, not bad for the area, just not actual "authentic" mexican food. read more

Food was good but overall experience was poor. We were seated near a table of 10, 4 adults all drinking excessively and 6 kids running around like they were at home. Parents weren't doing anything and waiters weren't interested in asking them to quiet down or even sit down. Couldn't hear the other people at my table without shouting and you could tell by just looking around, that other tables were just as unhappy. The waiters were all sitting on a counter near the back or in booths rolling silverware and laughing, not paying any attention to their customers. Due the poor service, we won't be back. read more

We were told that this place was the best Mexican restaurant in Slidell. It proved to be the complete opposite. Our food arrived and the burritos were ICE COLD and had some sauce on them. When we asked told the server he took the plate to the back and came back less than 3 minutes later with replacement burritos that had been in the microwave. The sauce over the burritos was Pasta sauce and horrible. After this incident the waiter avoided our table other than to bring us the bill. We asked to speak to the manager and a the associate at the front brought over another waiter. This waiter finally found the manager and he was kind but tried to tell me the pasta sauce was TEX MEX style. We've lived in Texas as well and this is so not TEX MEX style. While the Manager was taking care of the situation the waiter was talking crap in Spanish to the Manager as well as the everyone else who was gathered up at the register. The funny thing is we speak Spanish and understood exactly what the waiter was saying. My Best Advice go to Tacos & Beer or Taco Bell. I will never return to this restaurant again. Nor will I reccomended it. Save your Money and your time. The staff is rude and assume that because you do not look Mexican that they can say bad things about you. Food was great. Service was TERRIBLE. we received our food from kitchen staff. At this point both of us needed refills. The waitress did not come back to our table until we were halfway done eating to check on us. Tell her we need an unsweetened tea, she comes back with sweet tea and disappears again before it's noticed it's the wrong kind of tea. She did not take one dirty dish off our table except the old drink I had to HAND HER. (Otherwise she wouldn't have taken it) At this point we are finished eating and ready for a check and a box. We can see our server standing in a mirror fixing her hair and not checking on her tables. I go to the hostess and ask her for a corrected drink, the check, and a box. The server does not come back out. she sends the hostess with everything!! I walked out while my mother paid the bill. The server came out and told her to have a good day at that point. She should have came out 20 minutes earlier! We should have been checked on directly after our food came out. I ate half my meal with no drink. For the price the service should have been 100 times better! read more
