We've been bringing our miniature poodles here for boarding and grooming for several years. We've always been pleased with the care and attention they've given our pups. But they really stood out with their care for our 17 year old, Bailey. Bailey had been showing his age, and standing for grooming was hard for him. When this first happened, they would always ensure he spent the least amount of time possible there and he was almost always ready before 11 a.m. Later, they adjusted the cut they gave him so he didn't have to stand so long. We had Bailey at Carriage Hill for grooming a couple weeks ago. While he was there, he had a seizure (he'd had a couple before and was on medication for them, not at all the fault of Carriage Hill). They called us to come pick him up. When we got there, Francine asked us for his leash so she could comfort him with a familiar smell when they picked him up. They carried our sweet boy to us and Francine was very kind when I asked, "is it time?" We made the difficult decision every dog owner dreads but it was clear that he was having more bad days than good ones. That experience made it crystal clear to me that the team at Carriage Hill really does care about the animals in their care and they make their living doing something that they are passionate about. I can't thank them enough for the kindness they showed us that day and can't wait for the day we're able to bring a new puppy there for grooming. read more

OK place- but we had a few issues. Boarded my dog here for two weeks. The facility is not open on the weekends for pick up so I had to pay for extra nights- even though I was in town. Really didn't like that- I wanted my dog! I was out of the country but I called every few days to check on my dog and was never given any information other than "he's fine". There's no option for daily updates or pictures- like other facilities I've used. Here's what prompted me to write this review: When I picked up my Pug the owner told me he had gotten a bloody nose from colliding with and rough housing with another dog a few days prior in a play group. They should be monitoring the play groups a little more closely!! Then she told me my dog sneezed and got blood all over her white skirt! Uhh why even mention that? Who cares about your skirt? Seemed like a cold and out of touch comment to make when my dog was injured! My dog was had a little scrape on his nose and was making a wheezy noise the first two days home. He seemed a little traumatized and is now more clingy than usual. Cannot recommend this place. read more

Traumatized my dog ! What the heck did they do to my gentle happy dog? He was shivering like crazy from fear when I tried to drop him off and is also very scared just seeing his bag of bath stuff at home . He hasn't ever been scared of boarding/grooming at other locations . In fact he enjoys it but he is very afraid of this place . I have to now deprogram him from his fear of baths and grooming . Doesn't look like the employees love dogs . You can get a feel for places where people work there because they love dogs . Here it seems like it's just a paycheck ( in my opinion) . Their grooming awards are from years ago - 5 years old. They obviously weren't gentle with my gentle dog . It's heartbreaking to realize I took him to such a place. Also they add a fee if you pay with a credit card . Which is ridiculous. They expect people to still carry check or carry $$$ in cash? Ridiculous. And the entire place reeks! I own and train my own pointing dogs. We do a good deal of upland hunting and my dogs are more than just pets, they are my constant companions and working partners. I love them so when I need to board them due to out of town trips, I need to know that the people looking after them genuinely care. The Carriage Hill team does a wonderful job. They exercise the dogs multiple times a day, feed them according to my instructions (which is very important for working breeds) and they do a wonderful job cleaning and grooming. I've been boarding the pups with Carriage Hill for 15 plus years. I would not trust anyone else to care for them. read more

I dont know how they got a life vest on my GSD but they did and I'm an experienced dog trainer and I can't. A very nice place to board your dog and they care for the animals very well. I wouldn't hesitate to put my guy up there again and the prices are quite fair. My GSD is a good dog but he's suspicious of strangers unless your very experienced, which he senses and why we can't leave him with friends despite his training, and he flourished there during a long trip we took. I took my 5.5 month old Black Lab here for a swimming session and was very pleased. The facility is very clean. He was accompanied by a trainer who went in the pool with him which was very helpful since it was his first time swimming. He took to it like a natural. The people here are very friendly and helpful with questions I had regarding my new pup. I plan on bringing him here for training during their next session and will board him here when needed(I will update on these topics when I have tried them). I called in last minute. They said they could fit him the schedule. I was really happy about that. When I dropped my dog off, the lady said "he will be ready by 4 at the latest, we close at 6." Okay. I understand that considering it was last minute. They have his record and contacts on file. Not worried. 6 hours go by and wonder if he's done. I call and the answer was yes.... They have everything on file to call and notify us but they didn't. The minute I brought him out of the lobby, my dog looked for the nearest green patch to relieve himself. Literally, a solid minute.. I feel bad. Then we get home and he buries himself in the water dish. He probably drank close to 24oz before he left his water bowl. I feel worse. I'm upset because I feel the 3 factors of responsibility for a veterinarian weren't met. If there was any attention given, why did my pup show so much distress? He might get shaken up around other dogs in that situation but there is no reason for any of these problems. 2 stars is being generous. read more

I've taken my pets here for years to be boarded and I've never been disappointed. But this review is solely about their grooming services which have slowly degraded over the years to just shear disappointment. The first time I took my dog to be groomed they did a fabulous job and the price was reasonable. They managed to get all the undercoat out and she didn't shed for months after. The second time I had a coupon and the job wasn't as good as before, but still better than anything I could do. Now, the previous three times have really cemented my belief that I need to find a new groomer. The prices haven't been consistent and neither has the quality of service. It seems that every time I go in the prices have gone up and I'm not talking about a several years span here. Over the course of a year I've paid 3 different prices for the same services, each time more and more. Yet each time my dog comes back to me smelling like wet dog and her hair is clearly unbrushed. She is shedding all over the floor of the lobby and I have to brush her when I get home. My dog is also fairly old and because of her age and breed she can't really clean herself very well. I tell them every time to give special attention to certain areas and thye never do. Once again I have to do it myself when I've already dropped a good chuck of change to have them do it. I myself could do a better job and I can't really speak volumes for my grooming abilities. This place is just not worth the price. read more

Love, love, love this place. This is a family business, run by a brother and sister whose parents passed it down to them. Now even their children work there. These people live and breath pets. I have been taking my wheaten terrier here for grooming every two weeks for seven years now. Love the way they trim his butt. He looks so cute walking away from you. That's not to say that occasionally we don't get a trim that's not exactly right. We do. But never too short, so they always can take him right back and fix him up. And they do it happily. Also, we probably have the only swimming wheaten and he enjoys the indoor swimming that they have there. read more

I am so glad I found Carriage Hill Kennels! This place is GREAT! Francine, Bobby & Jimmy have been so wonderful with our dogs. They are a 3 generation family business, they love what they do and you will feel that the first time you meet them. They have a wonderful balance of being professional but treating their customers (pets & owners) like lifelong friends. I found this kennel about 2 months ago. I had never boarded any of my dogs ever & was a little nervous. I have a 12 year old Boston Terrier and a (now) 8 month old Rottweiler puppy. I needed to board both dogs for a week while on a family celebration vacation. Our Rottweiler is a high maintenance dog, who has needed much socialization & work overcoming anxiety (grrr). Francine, Bobby & Jimmy have been amazing at helping us with her! They have been reassuring & patient & just have understood her from day 1. We loved that they could work on training with her while we were away. I also like that the kennel was clean, had heated floors & large sized kennels. When we brought both the dogs home they were in great spirits, happy & healthy & our Rott was much more confident. We have continued training sessions with them & I am very happy with the results. We recently had the dogs boarded there again and it was so nice to know that they were in good hands & they love going there. I highly recommend this kennel for boarding, grooming, swimming and training. In addition to being great at what they do, I find them to be reasonably priced. We have been boarding our 3 year old Lab Gilson for the past 2 years during family vacations, as well as the occasional overnight situations. We are extremely pleased with the level of care that Gilson receives at Carriage Hill. Everyone of the staff is genuinely a "dog person" and they are truly there to take care of our loved pets. Yes, at the end of the day, it's a kennel. But they really do a great job. I have some specific experiences to share: When I toured the actual kennel area before dropping off the first time, I did not smell any urine or feces at all. Yes - it is a kennel with chain-link fencing and all, but it was clean -- much cleaner than I anticipated. After our first vacation with Gilson at Carriage Hill (it was a 2 week trip), upon getting him home, I noticed his elbows were a bit raw. I felt funny calling - but did so anyway. The response from Jackie was very caring and very supportive for me to have placed the call. They do give them blankets to have in their kennel, but she counselled me for the next drop-off to remind them of his elbow situation, and they would give him extra bedding, and to give extra watch. We have not had one problem with raw elbows in the 2 years since. As we have returned for subsequent drop-offs, my dog does not cower or try to avoid going in - he just walks right in (and he does have a cowering reflex to uncertain situations). I had one of the owners come up to me once upon pick-up and tell me how much he enjoys my dog, with specifics -- which means to me that he was interacting with my happy, well-adjusted Gilson, not a sad and bemoaned dog. When the dog-flu hit Chicago, we were soon going out-of-town. The staff was VERY specific in the questions that they asked before allowing Gilson to come to stay in order to protect and ensure the health of their kennel. And as soon as the vaccination was available - they required all dogs that boarded there to have the flu vaccine. They are very committed to the health of all dogs that are in their care. And finally - our most recent trip occurred over the 4th of July. Sadly, Gilson has developed a noise fright in the past year to thunderstorms. We were VERY concerned about the fireworks and their impact on him. We were in a high-level of contact with Francine and Chris - and their support of our concerns went way way above the call of duty. We are so grateful to them both. At the end of the day, we know that we have a safe, caring, loving situation for Gilson to stay in when we are not home. We feel that we have partners in both resource and support as we lead our dog's life. We highly recommend your consideration of Carriage Hill Kennels for your doggie needs. read more

Do not board your dogs here .... Theres a reason there's no pictures of the kennels. I dropped my dogs off here recently and before I left asked to see the kennels and where they would be sleeping ... I was mortified. The kennels are small and crammed in a long thin hallway that are filthy. They cram as many dogs as they can fit into there and all the dogs are barking non stop and panting looking very stressed. The dog run is a a cardboard that lifts up in the kennel to an individual Little Rock area just big enough for them to pee or poo. These poor dogs are in these small cages not even big enough to call a kennel for majority of the time. Even with an added charge of group play time and swim that's only an hour and a half activity for the whole day .The dog run name is very misleading because a it's smaller than there "kennel". I took my dogs out immediately and headed over to paradise 4 paws... similar pricing when adding group play and swims and 100000x better with webcams. All the "awards" for carriage hill are very misleading. Must just be for training/grooming/ or daycare if they are real. read more

Beautiful and clean facility but VERY pricey. They are closed on Sunday so many times you have to pay for another day of boarding. We ordered a bath for our dog and was shocked to be charged $46. I was told that it also included a brush out and nail clipping. The charge was only $5 less than a grooming. I have brought my 1-year old dog to Carriage Hill Kennels for grooming twice so far. I really love this place. The facility is clean and the staff and owners are friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable about dogs. I love the way they groom my dog -- haircut as specified, nails and sanitaries trimmed, ears cleaned, and glands expressed. Their prices are comparable to other grooming places. They will have you drop your dog off early between 8 and 9 am and give you a time when your dog will be ready for pick-up (usually mid-afternoon). Meanwhile, I get to run errands and do the many other things I cannot otherwise do when my two young dogs are home with me. I've also brought in my new 4-month old puppy on my second visit for a puppy trim and coat de-shedding and the owner offerred suggestions on what she thinks is best for my puppy. She also told the groomer to make sure to take my puppy out sometime that afternoon and to feed her. I have not inquired about their boarding services as I haven't had the need for it so far. read more

I would not recommend this kennel to anyone. Our 4-year old Jack Russell came home after a 7-day stay with a horrible rash on his stomach and the underside of his neck. He was extremely skitish of us for a few days and had horrible diarrhea for 3 days. We dropped off his food and gave them directions on feeding, etc. We paid for extra play time... but who knows if our directions were followed or if he got extra play time? The kennel refused to take any responsibility... but said they would give us one day free on our next board. As if we would ever return. Like my father said, you get what you pay for. I brought my dog here for the first time for a groom this past Friday since my work is just a mile away. The ladies at the front desk were very nice and everything was done when I came to pick him up. Starting Friday night he was intensely itching his ears and crying and when I looked in them, they were covered with dry blood inside. Over the weekend he was itching on and off and I figured it was due to aggressive plucking. Yesterday, I got home from work and he ran up to me crying hanging his head to one side. I went to the vet immediately and they said he had a yeast infection in his ears due to excessive moisture that got in there during his groom and the blood. $200 later he is traumatized to have anyone touch his ears because they had to take him in back, give him a shot for the pain, and completely clean out his ears. He didn't sleep all night and is sitting here just crying from the pain. I have only had him since May so he has been to 2 other places to get groomed (both were less expensive also) and he didn't have a problem. I noticed cuts and dry blood on his inner thigh also - I understand that stuff happens but someone should have told me when I picked him up instead of just grabbing him from the back and dismissing me. This is my first time actually going on Yelp and reviewing ANY place, so that should tell you something. I won't be going back here and I would recommend not using this place. To think of how aggressively he must have been groomed due to all the blood I saw in his ears makes me feel so bad I ever took him there. read more

Terrible first experience here. Took our 14 week old dog for her first private swimming lesson. The 'trainer' dragged her into the water and made her swim to me. No easing into it, on play in zero depth. I asked that he give her time on the steps or shallow area. He waited less than 5 seconds and then pulled her into the deep water. She was terrified. I've taken my dog here for training, swimming, and grooming, and I'm going to find another place. The training wasn't bad; I have noticed that my dog is much better behaved. The swimming was fun for my dog, but it probably isn't something I would pay for unless my dog couldn't exercise another way. The quality of the bath (with minor trimming) was pretty good. The reason I gave them 2 stars and will not go back is because of the customer service (to me and my dog). They treat me like they are doing me a big favor whenever I come in. Most dog businesses are sweet to the dogs that come in, but they don't really acknowledge that my dog is even there. I tried to ignore it, because I think they do an OK job. I brought my 4 1/2 month Golden retriever for training with Jimmy and he did an excellent job! My dog now walks on a leash perfectly without pulling and does not bark or interact with other dogs unless I give him the command that he is free. He now comes when called. I have also boarded my dog here and they do an excellent job. He also took a swimming lesson and now Loves the water! It was wonderful to take him to a dog beach and have him swim out and catch a ball and come right back when I called him. It is so worth it to have a well-trained dog! read more

Brought my small dog in for a cut and 8 hours later, the dog came back FREAKED OUT! REALLY, REALLY FREAKED OUT!!!!! It took months to get him calmer. He was nervous, jittery and was visibly shaking for weeks and weeks. I called Carriage Hill to ask what happened and was given no reason for this behavior. Actually they dismissed my call in a way I do think this is not the first time an owner has inquired. I do not know what happened but I do know that I WILL NEVER take him back to this place again. Owners seemed nice but very bad experience for the animal. The pet owner is not allowed in the back so anything could have occurred and you will not be aware. I made the mistake of sending an expensive family pet to a kennel based on price. The prices are good at Carriage Hill but that doesn't make it a good deal. Warning: DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. Dog training at Carriage Hill Kennels is the best! Bobby and Jimmy give an outstanding beginner and intermediate dog training class. I dropped my 4 month old puppy off in the morning and picked her up in the afternoon one day a week for their 6 week board-and-train program. My Lab, Dannie, received personal, professional, one-on-one attention the entire time she was there. Bobby and Jimmy trained her several times a day. When I picked her up at the end of the day they provided a demonstration of the lesson with my dog. Every question that I had about the lesson and about how to train my dog was answered. I received a homework sheet on what to practice at home throughout the week. Bobby and Jimmy also encouraged me to call or email them at any time with any questions. They were always there for me and Dannie. In the beginner class we learned to sit, down, stand, heel on a loose leash, about turn, automatic sit, slow and fast pacing, long sits and downs, and most important.....the recall. The best thing about this class is that their training sessions include training your dog with distractions. I was so pleased with the results from the beginner class, that I immediately enrolled Dannie in the intermediate class for another 6 weeks. Once again, outstanding. My dog couldn't wait to get there every morning she had a training session. The intermediate class fine tuned everything learned in the beginner class except now we were learning how to heel off leash, long distance recalls, working on a flat collar and giving my dog commands from across the room, sits, downs, the stand, etc. Kudos to the entire staff at Carriage Hill. Chris, Francine, Bobby, Jimmy and Jackie know what they are doing when it comes to dogs. You can tell that all of them enjoy it by the personal and professional service they provide.
