I've been to Carr's many times, as I stay in a nearby hotel when in town. The store is nice enough, but the customer service is some of the worst I've ever encountered. Go to the deli, the meat counter, customer service counter, it's always the same. No help available. Plenty of employees standing around chatting amongst themselves, but no one for the department you're trying to get assistance in. When someone finally does show up, I'm usually treated as if I'm annoying them. Unless I just need something quick I can get at the self checkout, I avoid this store. read more

Dakota at the liquor store harassed me because my 53 year-old wife stood outside the store and he wanted to see her ID. Also that's the whole reason she didn't go into the store cause she didn't have it with her. He was rude and should not probably be working in customer service. read more

Never coming here again. Placed an order for pick up between 6-7pm. Got a message at 6pm that there was a delay for my order and it hadn't even been started. Finally got a text at 7:15 that my order was getting started. Then i recieved a text it was ready for pick up at 7:38. I got there at 7:55pm. Checked in on the app and waited. 15 mins goes by and still nothing. Call the number on the sign and the automated voicemail says their pick up hours are 6am-8pm. Usually this wouldnt be a problem but i have a baby in the car with no stroller as we have just moved here. I called customer service and asked if there was anyway somebody could bring out my order because of my circumstances and the lady on the phone was blunt and responded with a flat out no. It's your typical Carrs...except cleaner, brighter, and super updated. You visit Carrs to pick up a thing or two. The thing or two I appreciate at this Carrs location, is definitely their large poke bowls. Included is a fresh mix of rice, seaweed, and carrots. Also cucumbers, but we didn't care for those. We found Carrs poke bowls to be a quick, light and fresh pupu for a night (or day) of drinking. The sushi cooler they're located in, is very near the entrance. Hit the self-checkout and you're in and out in 5min. We love convenience. P.S. We tried Carrs' spicy crunch roll and it was nothing to write home about. read more

In general I'm not a Carrs fan because it's extremely expensive. I definitely would not recommend doing your normal shopping here. But it's midtown location and conveniently shaped parking lot make this an easy place to pop in and out on the way home from work for the item or two you may need to complete for dinner. I've never been a huge Carrs fan. Why? Three reasons: 1) It doesn't usually carry as many of the unique/local-ish items I'm looking for. At least not as well as Fred Meyer. I have never bought that Carrs is anything other than a Safeway with a different logo to appeal to Alaskan state pride. 2) The interiors generally aren't as nice as Fred Meyer. 3) The prices are often higher (sometimes MUCH higher) than Fred Meyer. This brand new store largely fixes #1 and #2. But, #3 remains. What do I mean? Multiple cuts of steak that are well over $20/lb (not grass fed either), multiple varieties of apples for $4/lb (not organic, either), a hot bar that is the same price as (the very expensive) Natural Pantry, but not anywhere near as fresh. It blows my mind how expensive they can be on meat and produce, while offering no quality benefits. But, let's focus on #1 and #2. #1: When you walk in there's a sign bragging about all the local items. The selection here is the best of any Carrs in town, and is even better than Fred Meyer, impressive! They have so many lovely greens here that previously would require stops at multiple grocers to get. #2: interior is top-notch, as you would expect from a brand new store. They spared no expense! Other things I found notable: - You can pay at the automated terminals with Apple Pay or Google Pay! FINALLY 2014 technology has reached Anchorage! Only bummer: if you have a debit card, the terminal currently will not let you run it as credit. (I'm with a credit union that requires 12 or more non-PIN charges/month in order to get 5% interest, that's the only reason I care about this) - Kaladi's inside! Not my favorite local roaster, but such a better fit than a Starbucks. - Bulk section not as extensive as Fred Meyer's. - Pretty good grab-n-go section - Nice ready to eat options: wings, poke, sushi, etc. - It's not a 24hr Carrs, but it is open till 1am. Great hours if you have a certain friend that usually hikes off mountains in the dark and is hungry... Great improvements, but I'll probably still go to Fred Meyer across the street for produce and meat. I'm too poor for Carrs! read more

Today marked the grand opening of the midtown Carrs location. It used to be located towards the Denali street side. They shut down that location in 2015, and rebuilt it facing the New Seward Hwy. The thing I love about this Carrs is that it's A. walking distance from my home, and B. It has a Poké & Ramen Bar! No other Carrs in town has that. The store was organized, brand new with that brand new smell, and there were a lot of people in line for ramen, and rightfully so! The employees were standing by, eager and waiting to help. My cashier was Amber. She was very professional and kind! She didn't a wonderful job. The one critique I have is that they should lower their prices to Fred Meyers prices, which are more reasonable. Other than that, it's good. I love Carrs' deli! Always fresh! Will be back. Edit: I'm docking a star for their lack of gluten free & organic food section. read more

This had become my preferred Carrs location in spite of the increased sketchiness in midtown. Last week I was surrounded by three huge guys on exiting the store. I thought I was being attacked but they were undercover employees accusing me of shoplifting. I had receipts for everything and rather than apologize, they treated me like it was inconvenient for them that I was a paying customer. Forget this place. read more

Another grocery option in town with many great finds. A large variety of brands is available. As always if you see something you like/want get it because you never know if it's in stock the next day. Produce and meat section is a hit and miss quality wise. I recommend really looking at what you purchase and be cautious with dates on the packages. Milk for example can already be days away from the sell by date. Parking is usually ok, watch out for the icy spots around this time of the year. The inside of the store could be a bit cleaner but with the amount of foot traffic they get I can't really complain. All on all the employees are friendly and always ready to answer any questions. read more

We like this Carrs because it is an easy stop on our way home. Was very busy when we were here. I do not like self checkout, but lines were long for checkout. That is reason for 4 stars. After reading the initial reviews from fellow Yelp friends and waiting for the hype to die down several weeks after the grand opening, I visited for the first time to pick up groceries during errands. This brand new Carrs (or should I say reincarnation...) is located at the east end of the Midtown Mall (formerly known as the Sears Mall) in the space formerly occupied by the namesake department store. This location like others have said, is clean and brightly lit with organized shelves fully stocked. The produce section is probably the nicest part of the store with plenty of fresh vegetables and well-placed displays. However, the prices are no different than what you would find at any other Carrs location. With that being said, there are two issues to address with this store and I will provide details on what this place needs to work on. The first issue and this is something that the store really can't do anything about is the process of exiting the parking lot going onto Benson Blvd. This is easily the worst road to turn into as this street is always backed up behind the market towards Denali St., even more so during the rush hour traffic during the weekdays. You will be hard-pressed to find an outer lane to turn into from this exit and you will have to rely on the courtesy of other drivers (which is always a gamble especially here in Anchorage) to make a space for you to turn left onto Benson. I can only imagine how long the wait must be during rush hour as a line of cars start to form in front of the store as other drivers have to wait before getting on the road. This is the only way for anyone wanting to head eastbound from here unless you are willing to chance turning right onto New Seward on the far left lane to turn onto Benson. The second issue is the checkout area by the deli and the salad bar. There is no organization for lines when customers approach the register to pay. There have been a couple of times when people have cut in front of others as a second employee has stepped in to ring up customers. This is made worst by the placement of the registers which is right next to the seating area AND the entrance from the Sears Mall. A line usually forms pretty quick and it only gets worse from there as the aisle from the entrance to the deli is easily congested with people walking in and those standing in the middle of the aisle in line (picture Grand Central Station in NYC but in a supermarket to give you a better picture...). My first visit has already seen customers visibly frustrated as they navigate the store all the way to the checkout lines. A visit in mid-morning or later on at night (which I don't recommend for this spot) would be better for not dealing with the crowds. In spite of the new setup and clean appearance, these take a backseat to the actual experience of shopping here which makes the older locations more convenient without these issues. read more

4 stars for all the choices! The fruit and vegetable aisles are very catching to the eye but still pricey compared to Fred's. We literally came because we saw they had a Ramen bar and wanted to see how it compared to other ramen joints here in Anchorage. Unfortunately for $13.99 I'd rather sit in at Ramen house or Narutos. SUPER pricey for a deli area ramen imo. The broth wasn't very flavorful but it had good spice/heat. They also have a build your own stir fry type option and poke! I think they cost similar to the ramen. Might try this next time as you get to choose from a variety of fresh veggies! read more

I've had the opportunity to shop at this Carrs location several times now and have only had positive experiences. I did not attend their grand opening events, but was there that day to check out the new store. That initial first impression led to several more visits from me. Everything in this store is so clean and organized, with well-lit aisles named after prominent Anchorage neighborhoods and streets. The staff are always very eager to assist customers in any way, and appear to genuinely enjoy being there. I really like how they highlight the fresh local produce, as well as the farms they work with to bring us these delicious offerings. The revamped deli has great choices that are not available at other locations. In fact, their whole "grab and go" food area seems fairly large and convenient, which is a bonus for the bustling lunch crowd in Midtown. Overall, I must say that I enjoy shopping here. I do frequent other big box stores in the area, but I am glad to have Carrs as another option for me to choose from. Especially when their customer service far exceeds that of other stores nearby. read more

Always open very longs hours, fresh produce, great ready to microwave meats selection/potatoes when I'm around, when deli is open, always tons of choices. Fresh fruits, vegetables. The new Carr's is hard no for me. With the new design they've done away with the hippy food /natural food section. They do have a lot of gluten-free stuff there, but it's so hard to find it's not worth the time looking for it when you can just cross the street and go to Fred Meyer and get everything you need in one section (and less then 5 minutes) instead of playing an game of scavenger hunt at the grocery store. I looked for a gluten-free chicken nuggets for 10 minutes, then looked with the assistance of someone who worked there and still couldn't find them (or even any chicken nuggets). Due to the lack of support for the allergy community and the fact that it would take me 10 times as long to complete my shopping there I will be skipping this new store. IMO *not* Gluten free, or dairy free, or allergy convenient. Otherwise this store is beautiful, super clean, and everybody was super friendly. I honestly didn't have time to wander the isles aimlessly looking at everything, due to the coronavirus (I was here on a mission). Unfortunately they were out of what I was looking for (flour for my mom who loves to make homemade bread). I guess the gluten free fad is over. Either that or someone is stockpiling all the flour in town. Or everyone suddenly loves baking. Either way, I did pick up a couple other things I needed and really enjoyed how neatly everything was stocked. The fruit and vegetables were magazine photo quality stacked. It is a brand new built store and it was shining. The staff was helpful and friendly. What I liked the most was that they had kaladi brothers coffee instead of Starbucks at the front. Made up for being out of flour (yes I know it's not their fault). I'd been hesitant to come in due to the homeless population in the area and the issues that caused across the street at Walmart, but they had a security guard at the door and I didn't see any problems on my visit. I'll be back for sure to explore more when things like "social distancing" are not a thing. read more

Whenever I want to give flowers to someone, 90% of the time I go to Carrs either on Huffman or Abbott. This time I decided I would try out the new Carrs on the Seward Hwy. I've never been before and everyone has been telling me it was really nice. So I go in thinking I'll pick up something quick but they didn't really have what I was looking for so I decided to buy a couple bouquets and a vase and put together my own. So I gathered the flowers and asked the girl by the floral counter if I could get a tiny to/from card, some flower food, and some fabric ribbon because I was going to put together my own and the gals name was Markus she was super sweet, friendly, and very helpful. She said sure no problem we'll include free of charge. I said ok I'm gonna run grab a soda and I'll be right back to pick out the color ribbon I wanted and pay for everything at the floral counter. So I came back and the older lady that had been standing behind her, "Marínela" told her to charge me $3.00 for a small piece of ribbon. You know, I don't have a problem paying for it. After all the store does not get it for free, My problem is I do and have many many times in the past put together my own arrangements and Carrs on Huffman and on Abbott have NEVER charged me for ribbon, flower food, the tiny card, or a little mixed green or babies breath to mix in my bouquets that I purchase from them and this time I even bought a vase. I very clearly felt the negative energy pouring out of this woman and quickly decided I was not going to let her steal my joy. So I happily paid for my $3.00 small piece of ribbon and decided not to dare ask for any greenery or babies breathe , lol geez that might have been another $9.00? Yikes. I really do not like giving negative reviews this lady clearly had a problem with me not having her put the arrangement together or something??? When she rang up the ribbon there wasn't even a code or number for it. It was rang up as consumer bunch. On the positive note. Markus was soo nice and if she was the only one working it would have been 5 stars the other part of my experience makes me never want to go back to that location. If you close at 1 AM then you close at 1 AM not 1254, not yelling in the mic telling people that the store is officially closed at 12:54 and we won't be able to get anything further Which she said it very rudely and I'm pretty sure she was directing it to me seeing though I was the last person. I just landed from an12 hour flight and was hungry !. So after ringing out because I did check out before one I did ask about the store hours, the lady stated 1 AM. Which prompted me to ask then why are you telling people on the mic at 12:54 that is close. She stated they have things to do as in the workers. Ok, this didn't go well, to say the least... I tried the delivery service from (I think, it didn't say on the paperwork) the Midtown Mall Carr's. Wow... when it finally arrived, 80% of the order was completely wrong. I'd ordered a 1.25# package of burger, got a 4# "Value Pack". I'd ordered 28 ounce cans of tomatoes, got 14 ounce ones. Same with the ricotta cheese. Ordered large containers, got tiny ones. Ordered whole milk mozzarella, got "lactose free"... Literally the only things correct were the lasagna noodles, a can of tomato sauce and the whole cooked chicken. Needless to say, my plan for starting the sauce for the lasagna I was planning for a dinner party was not possible. I called the toll free number provided on the receipt, got an extremely rude woman who pretty much told me "tough luck" but did grudgingly agree to credit me for the FOUR POUNDS of hamburger. So, in summation, the entire experience was a nightmare. Now I have to drag myself and my broken foot to the store to get what I need! I've been a loyal Carr's customer for 30+ years, but Fred Meyers is looking better all the time. Very, very disappointing... read more
