A sign at the cheese kiosk advertised 20% off Murray's Cambozola Black Label if you have a Fred Meyer loyalty card, which I do have. The unit price on the label/sticker was $24.99/lb. That's the price if you don't have the loyalty card and, thus, don't get the discount. The sticker then went on to show the "price with card," i.e., the discounted price, i.e. the 20% off price. And that unit price showed as $20.69/lb. That's a discount, yes, but it's not a 20% discount. To simplify, let's say the un-discounted unit price was $25/lb (a penny more than the actual un-discounted price). What's 20% of $25? Five dollars. So the discounted price with loyalty card should have been $20/lb. Another sign at the kiosk advertised 20% off Murray's Aged Manchego. Same problem: Fred's system didn't calculate the 20% correctly. The un-discounted unit price was $26.99/lb., but the same sticker showed the price with card to be $23.59/lb. Twenty percent off $26.99 is $21.59, not $23.59. So, I was being charged $2 more per pound than the advertised price on the sign right there at the kiosk. The nice young woman at the cheese kiosk seemed to understand what I explained to her in person, but she said she couldn't change the pricing; all the cheese sales staff does is weigh the portions and their system spits out a label. So I spoke in person to the man at the customer service counter, who also told me he couldn't change the pricing system and he didn't think anyone else in the store could, either. He noted that the PLU number on the sign didn't match the PLU on the sticker affixed to the hunk of cheese. I phoned and spoke with a grocery manager who did not listen, tried to say I misunderstood, then hung up on me. Then I phoned the 800 number and, once I got past the automated answering system and spoke to a person, she listened, seemed to understand, and said she'd pursue it. Bottom line for you, other Freddie's patrons, is: Check the math on the advertised discount. Make sure that the discount shown on the label agrees with the advertised discount. read more

Wow y'all, wow. I know tensions are high and we're getting cabin fever, but can we please show some empathy for the people that are out on the front lines? Fred Meyer's employees put themselves at risk of infection every day. They are overworked and understaffed and underpaid. They, along with medical professionals and first responders, are keeping us alive right now. The only difference is that they are paid and respected much less by our society. To clear a few things up: Instacart: is not owned by Fred Meyer. If you have a problem with them, you shouldn't put that on Fred Meyer. Also: Instacart workers are also on the front lines, and need your compassion. It's a GOOD THING: that grocery stores are being strict about returns. THIS DISCOURAGES HOARDING, in addition to being SAFE. In times like this, we should only buy what we NEED. OK, so with that soapbox out of the way: Freddies is doing a great job, all things considered. Social distancing markers are in place on the floors. Employees are constantly sanitizing and/or changing out gloves. Food is getting re-stocked only days after the hoarders take it all. Despite all the added strain, employees remain cheerful and eager to help. Oh, and they are keeping alcohol sales going...essential indeed. Let's be nice, and keep it classy, Anchorage. Review is for Fred Meyer's shopping app: Insta Cart Using the app was easy, all of my favorite foods were listed, it seemed so simple. I thought I would never have to go into a grocery store again! Real life isn't always as amazing as the app appears: - All foods for my alternative diet was removed from the list except one item. My hunch is that the shopper/picker working on my order could not find the items. Until Insta Cart can resolve this issue I don't think this service is best suited for customers with alternative diets (Gluten Free, Dairy Free). - All fresh produce on the order except the blackberries had gone bad on delivery. If you need a refund from Insta Cart you have three options: - Bring the items into Fred Meyers with the receipt/your Fred Meyers Card (if you used it during purchase) for an exchange of the exact items. Note, Insta Cart which does not give you a receipt - weird - Call Insta Cart and ask for a refund, the wait time was 110 minutes LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL - Throw the items away and don't use Insta Cart until they get their act together Although I'm grateful for a pick-up/delivery grocery store option, it is of no use to me if the service cannot locate my items or if the produce delivered has already gone bad. So yeah, they've remodeled this store and f'd it up. It was great a few years ago and then they tried to give it a face lift and screwed it up in the process. The Fred Meyers on Abbott, Dimond and Debarr are far superior just by virtue of their sheer size and ability to carry more products. This store is so small, especially the clothing and toy departments... literally dont even bother shopping here for those items, it's a total waste of time. Their produce has been hit/miss for the last few months. I got garlic from this place a few times and I have to buy 2-4 bulbs just because I'll usually run into a mold spot in the peeling. This batch of 3 2 of the garlic was moldy. I've started buying jarlic which as we all know isn't the same but what do I do? The onions are on the same level of mold. I cut into one last Saturday and it was brown and dry in the middle, I had to run to Safeway to get different produce. This has been my new routine- run to Fred Meyer for dinner- then run to carrs next door to me for produce that isn't moldy. read more

I came down here to pick up some groceries while running errands throughout the day. This Fred Meyer is my least favorite of all the others around town. It is situated in one of the busiest areas of Anchorage at New Seward Highway and Northern Lights Blvd. across from the Sears Mall. The design of the parking lot is very condensed and crowded with heavy traffic by the road entrances and the front doors. Parking spaces are difficult to find during the rush hour. Tempers flare and patience run short as drivers ready to leave after shopping express frustration at other drivers who are waiting for a car to back up so they can take that parking space. Drunken inebriates and panhandlers are a huge problem here as security frequently escorts an intoxicated, belligerent person off the property which only adds to the chaos and confusion of the store. The employees here are happy to help you if they are available. Most of them are manning the registers by the front while there are very few working in the grocery aisles. However, when you get to the clothing and accessories side of the store, there are more employees working on the floor. That being said, I decided to go with two stars rather than one for a previous visit I made here before taking a 5-day trip to California. I found an awesome deal on a five-piece luggage set that I took home for $22.00. Hard to believe? Yes, but it's the truth. I took the luggage set and asked if the price was accurate. The luggage set included large and medium carry-on pieces with wheels, a separate pouch for toiletries, a laundry bag for dirty clothes, and a shoulder-tote bag to carry with you on the plane. The employee at the sporting goods counter did a double-take and said, "No. That can't be right." So we went down to the luggage area and all of the five-piece sets were labeled at $44.99! Apparently, the store had made a pricing error on the tags which should've been at $140.00. He explained that it may be lower 48 prices but I highly doubted that with the amount of merchandise all together. I asked him if was willing to honor that price and he reluctantly said yes. The best part of this was seeing the promotional sign for all the luggage at 50% off! I asked him if would also honor that and he mumbled yes. I basically paid a total of $33.00 total with a couple of items from the grocery section on what could've been a $90 purchase with the correct price tag! This was an awesome find, but one I don't intend to gamble on by coming back here on a regular basis. The cons outweigh the pros here. Just when I was about to lose all hope that any sort of decent customer service exists anymore on the planet, along came Tammi. Tammi works in the liquor department, and yes- she had a case of one of my favorite beers available for me while the Fred's on Muldoon does not carry it. Why one store carries it and not another, is one of those grocery store mysteries of the universe. Especially when a digital coupon is being offered for the item. So big deal, right? What is important here, is the genuine response given by Tammi, first on the phone, then while in the store. Little does she know that she was one of the upper highlights of my day. I just wanted to put in a big thank you in "writing" via Yelp, Fred's survey site, and also on Google reviews. I love Freddie's as a grocery store. It's the equivalent of Safeway mixed with Target for much more reasonable prices. We can always find whatever we need here in one stop which is nice. I love Fred Meyer in general. It's a great one-stop shop for just about anything you need. They have a generous rewards program and great deals and coupons every week. However, I don't love this Fred Meyer. Mainly because the parking lot is a disaster. The store is in between two one-way roads (Benson and Northern Lights) and the beginning of the Seward Highway. Navigating the parking lot requires undivided attention because pedestrians and vehicles alike often to see to come out of nowhere. Getting in and out is a hassle because there's little room to turn at all of the entrances/exits. On the plus side, this Fred Meyer has the only second story dining area in Anchorage, near the Starbucks. It's nice to have a separate place to eat away from the busy shopping area if you happen to be there on a lunch break. Other than that, not much going for this location. Except for the fact that it's the closest alternative to Carrs on Gamble. read more

Fred Meyer is a fantastic grocery store (and more). There were lots of fruits and veggies to choose from. The deli counter was stocked full of yummy goods. I snapped up premade sushi and enjoyed it. We bought sliced deli meats and cheese and they were good. There were fresh breads available. We also bought Alaska themed items, such as cute socks with moose and wildlife on them with ALASKA stitched across the top. Items were organized well and everything I saw was priced. The store was clean. Prices were a bit high, but welcome to Alaska. We used self check out to save time. Overall, shopping there was a pleasant experience. read more

BUYER BEWARE: Fred Meyers is no longer accepting returns (with the exception of bad produce or meat apparently). When asked about this new policy, they say that they can't control the safety of an item once it leaves the store. But this is just an excuse to further line their own pockets. They admittedly can't guarantee the safety in the store! Many people touch items, including their own employees...so contamination happens in the store anyway. It always has and always will. Grew up with these stores back home. Kind of like a cross between Target and Walmart but usually smaller and with more unique goods. This is a huge Freddys and very well-stocked. We used it to pick up groceries while travelling and to buy souvenirs (this is the place they have a full aisle and much cheaper and more selection than anywhere else. Friendly employees, lots of parking and central location...can't beat that. They have great deals if you go all the time and they have a loyalty program! l was told this place is ghetto like somewhere between Walmart and Target. Well, with no grocery stores visible in Alaska, we came here after shopping at Walmart for some essentials and food. Apparently Walmart is the place to shop for groceries. Well, OMG this place is NOT ghetto. It's like Wholefoods and maybe a higher Target for other household needs. There is fresh food with lots of rows of packed food. We're guessing cause everything is so far away that people must stock up on packaged stuff? But the fresh food they did have was of quality. Coming from Hawaii, they prices in AK are competitive but some of the fresh food was actually cheaper. And good quality. They have a butcher who still wraps in butcher paper. Makes it all feel special. Specials at the meat counter can be economical too. I will say, I was surprised by the lack of salmon I saw, it being the time where salmon is running wild. But they have all kinds of stuff to browse through and lots of good deals. read more

I shop at this Fred Meyer regularly and consider it about the best we have in Anchorage but when traveling I see what it could be. I recently visited a Kroger's in Boone, Kentucky and it was Fred Meyer times 3 or 4. Why do we always get shorted in Anchorage and in Alaska? All aspects of the stores outside are better and a much lower price. Fred Meyer knows it has a captive audience in Alaska and therefore gives us very little. read more

I am starting to use this store more. It has some good things I need. AND though I do like Walmart's prices for a lot of items I can't handle the panhandling which is EVERY TIME. And the Carr's closest to me - Aurora Village - has never been great IMHO and the panhandling is almost as bad. Easily the worst Fred's in Anchorage, possibly Alaska. Selection is poor compared to other locations, produce and flowers are areadly nearly expired or spoiled at point of sale, and customer service is AWFUL. If you need something in a locked cabinet, be prepared to wait up to 45 minutes for an employee to make it to you, if they ever answer a page. I am currently waiting to look at a backpack, I've asked two different clerks for help, they've used the intercom, and no one has arrived with a key. This is unacceptable and one of chief reasons I will not be sad to see this location close. read more

I'm from NY (home of Wegmans), so I can't give Fred 5 stars. I'll give them 4 though, because this is the best grocer in Anchorage, by far. The produce section is leagues above Carrs and the Commissary (for the military crowd). The same is true for the meat department and the overall selection of food in general. It is also nice that you can pick up beer/wine from within the store (unlike Oaken Keg w/ Carrs). And of course, it's really nice to have all of the other clothing and home departments that compare to Target and Wal-Mart within arm's reach in-store as well. I am picky when it comes to gocery stores, and I would recommend making Fred Meyer your grocery store for fresh foods in particular (i.e. meat, fish, fruit, and veg) if you're new to the area. One drawback, I agree, is that the ones on Northern Lights AND Muldoon both have poorly designed, crazy parking lots. read more

Like people said, it's a one stop shop like a Walmart or Target, but also has a lot of groceries. The prices were pretty good. It was really good for stocking up on backpacking foods in the bulk foods section. The produce was underwhelming, but it seemed that way in a number of Alaskan stores. (I don't blame them, Alaska is far!) They have a huge selection of stuff, including a fair amount of camping gear. read more

I love this place! It's like a Whole Foods, Walmart and furniture store all in one! The produce is very fresh compared to the commissary on post. And a lot of the fruit is cheaper than other places as well. I will definitely be doing by grocery shopping here, and would recommend it to a friend!
