Just moved into our new *used* house 3 weeks ago and woke up to a cold house yesterday. I looked on our neighborhood Facebook page for previous posts about recommended HVAC companies and settled on Carter & Sons. They came out first thing this morning and replaced a bad motor in one of our furnace units. Very professional, polite, honest and transparent about all my options (considering the unit is 12+ years old). Just moved to Smyrna and the HVAC in our new house was not working properly. John from Carter and Sons came out the same day we called. He was cheerful, smiling, professional, and knowledgeable. He got it running in about 7 mins after explaining the problem. It worked for about 2 days and then stopped again. We called and he immediately came back out at no extra charge - diagnosed another problem and ordered the part. It came a day later and he came back and installed it. Only charged us for the initial consultation visit and the cost of the part. This is a great family business and I am so glad I got lucky and found them on my first call in this part of town. Another provider had already looked at it over multiple trips, and charged us more than $1200 to replace various parts; none of which solved the problem. Zac found the problem and had it fixed within 2 hours, and the total cost was only a couple hundred dollars, including the diagnostics and part. Our heat works, just in time for cooler weather. OK - so they were over an hour later than my appointment window. I wasn't surprised by that: it's summer, they're slammed, everybody is screaming for repair. Their rep called to say he was running late. Alas, I didn't let that bother me and if you're getting HVAC work done in the summer? You shouldn't either. Nature of the beast. Mr. Carter refused to answer questions regarding his company or to offer a fair quote in response to my request for proposal (RFP). Having stated, "Our relationships with our homeowners are built on a foundation of trust that you do not seem to posses," he apparently expected me to trust his company blindly, without question. In this culture of unfaithfulness and "fake news"? Not a chance! For those who exercise wisdom and caution trust is earned, not bestowed. Stating "I do not believe that we will be a good fit for each other," he likely referred to my being a self-identified 100% PTSD disabled Marine veteran. Mr. Carter apparantly is under the misconception that I could be a threat and/or danger to his employees: "I would never place my employees into a potentially harmful situation, be it their person, or their reputation." Thank YOU for YOUR service, Mr. Carter! I made no allusion to his employees in my RFP though I did mention an un-Reliable vendor with questionable business practices. Mr. Carter attempted to rebuke and bellitle me by expressing his "politically correct" disappointment regarding this. Had Carter & Sons service and repair a unit at my rental property in July. They said they replaced the capacitor. By early Sept the unit was failing. Another company said there was an oil leak in the condenser and the unit needed replacing. I insisted to my property manager we have Carter & Sons confirm this was necessary. Their tech came out, did not do a system inspection as requested and did not even look at the condenser to confirm an oil leak. What they did was replace the capacitor AGAIN...even though they allegedly put a new one in a few months prior. AND, they did this without work authorization. We refused to pay the invoice, which coincidentally came out to the maximum $300 maintenance threshold we allowed. They offered to send another tech out to do a proper job but at that point, we knew what we were dealing with. Stay very, very clear of this company. read more

I'm behind on submitting this, but Carter and Sons have been out to make repairs for me twice. Both times, the company has been extremely professional, polite, and efficient. I really appreciated the ease of communication in requesting service. They are very responsive via email and phone. This is a family run business, so you can honestly tell they care about their brand and how they treat customers. I also liked how they covered their shoes before walking in my house--it's not a big deal but it's little things like that, that count. Carter and Sons are very reasonably priced, they explain in detail the costs and work very quickly. All in all, I highly recommend them for your HVAC needs. It's funny, they came out once in the summer when my A/C went out and repaired that, then I called them again in the winter when my furnace was a bit wonky. I have had no problems since! I'm so glad I found Carter and Sons. They've helped me twice now. The first time was in winter, when my heat went out. Very easy to call and set up an appointment. Turns out the transformer in our furnace was completely shot and needed to be replaced. John was incredibly patient and honest and explained everything that needed to be fixed in detail. Very quick to respond to a request for a quote via Yelp to fix a broken furnace. John was flexible and agreed to come out after his appointments the next day. He was able to properly reinstall the Nest that we didn't install right the first time with some rewiring and setting changes. I really wanted to support a local small business so if you are trying to do the same, this is the company is for you. John came out to provide an HVAC duct quote since my home inspector discovered the clothes dryer air duct was simply lying on the attic floor and not connected to the outside as it should be. Grrrrrr John seemed very knowledgeable and I trusted him, therefore, I did not call any other companies at that point. The quote seemed completely reasonable to me but whether or not it was I really do not know through comparison. Although, I will say it did take about a week to get the quote and another week or so to get the service scheduled. Since my issue was not urgent, I was willing to wait but I did have to follow up a couple of times to keep things moving. The job was done to satisfaction at an affordable rate so that is all that matters to me. I plan to call back again for another issue I have. read more

My AC stopped blowing Cool air at the first heat wave in March. Because of the Covid outbreak I put off calling anyone until the inevitable 80+ degree temperatures were on their way. Within a a few days from my Online request a service person came to check out the system and another 2 days a supervisor came out to give me quotes and 2 days after that I had a whole new system that is working perfectly ever since. I couldn't be more disappointed with this company! I called Carter and Sons at 6:15 pm and asked if they could send someone out to check my AC since it had stopped working sometime during the day. I was told that someone would get back to me to let me know if they could even make it out. At about 6:50 I received a call back saying that they had a technican that was on his way to another job and would it be ok for him to come out between 9:00 and 10:00 pm. I said that was fine. 11:00 rolls around and no one has shown up. I call Carter and Sons back and talked to there answering service who told me they would reach out to the technician and let me know what's going on. It's now 4:00 in the morning and my whole family is miserable because our bedrooms feel like we are sleeping on the surface of the sun! No calls saying your running late! No calls to let us know you're not going to make it. No calls to apologize!
