Carter is a SCAM and a CROOK and mistreats his customers. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT USE HIS SERVICES. I WILL EXPLAIN WHY. Two days ago my mother and I was rear ended by a car on the highway going south bound for vacation. Unfortunately our car had to be put on a flat bed on his truck. Instead of dropping us off at his shop. He left us at a gas station and charged us 350 dollars for the movement of our car only around ten miles away. Our insurance Amica was in charge of handling the payment but Carter decided to go to us for payment. He was very rude and did not allow my mother to speak to inform him of the way he would be payed. We called our insurance and was told he was not supposed to come to us for payment because later we figured out HE WAS ALREADY PAYED. And heres the worse part, he raised the price to 500 because he said he had to wait for us to get our possessions out of the car. Here's the thing, HE LEFT US AT THE GAS STATION and dropped the car off also. The locals at the gas station told us about him and let me say, this man is a crook!! He even ASSAULTED my father when he was picking us up and is to my knowledge not allowing the tow truck that is suppose to pick up our car gain access to it BECAUSE HE HID THE CAR AND IS DEMANDING 500 dollars for it. AGAIN, DO NOT USE HIS SERVICES. We are currently in contact with the Sussex Sheriff Department and are making sure this man will never do this to another soul again. I rarely write a review but I recommend this company. I was on the road on Sunday afternoon, three hours from home. Chester Carter towed me, contacted someone to deliver an alternator, told me it would be 3 - 4 hours. (While I was there, three other people came by with problems and that's why he said 3-4 hours). He suggested I go to a Shell station to wait in A/C comfort since his place wasn't open. Fixed it, picked me up from Shell. (I had found out he also owns a restaurant and several people in the Shell told me what a great guy he was). While settling the bill, I noticed he had grease and dirt all over him, etc., and I said, "You've been in business for 40 years, and by the size of this place and owning a restaurant, you obviously you don't need to be doing this on a Sunday evening. You must really like it." He looked at me and said "I like helping people". I've seen the couple of poor reviews and all I can add is... you don't stay in business for 40 years in a small town and have everyone around you speak well of you. I've put his number in my contacts and if I ever need someone when I'm on I-95 around there, I'm calling him. (Two hours after I was back on the road I forgot to switch to my other diesel tank and ran my engine dry on my F250, which is a big no-no. I called him and he told me what to do to bleed the air out of the fuel system but I wasn't successful. I called him back and he called a buddy who had a service close to me who towed me and got it running.). PS - Mr. Carter charged me less than he had estimated. How many people would do that to someone stranded away from home? They know we're desperate and 9 of 10 would probably charge more. Anyone who thinks differently hasn't been around long. read more

Son suddenly lost power driving back from college as darkness set in. Had his pickup towed to Carter's. Early next morning, they called him up at the hotel, he stayed at overnight, advising the alternator was being replaced and someone would pick him up and take him to Carter's in half hour. We were traveling south on I-95 in Virginia when the "check engine" light came on in our truck (a 2005 GMC 3500 diesel). I spent several hours on Friday, without success, trying to find someone to diagnose and repair. I was able to limp to a campground for the night. The light went out on its own but came on again just 10 miles into our journey the next day. We limped to a hotel and I spent all Saturday booking a Monday appointment at a dealer and searching for someone to take a look at the problem in a Saturday. I found Chester Carter at Carter's Towing Service. He spent several hours diagnosing and repairing the problem by cleaning electrical connections. But as the problem appeared only when towing, I had little confidence that he had actually fixed the issue. I paid a little over $250 for the time and effort (no parts), which I thought was fair. The next morning the problem reappeared almost immediately. I pulled over in a parking lot just a couple of miles from Carter's and was evaluating my options when Chester pulled up in his truck and offered to take another look. I was reluctant, but agreed. After a "more aggressive" tightening of the connection on injector #7, we took the entire rig for a 20-mile test ride. The light stayed off. We went back to his shop. His charge for the fix? ZERO. So Carter's was able to diagnose and fix the problem for a very reasonable price. And I was able to travel on Saturday 300 miles rather than waiting until Monday to have the GMC dealer take a look. I am sure the dealer would have charged me at least $250 to fix the problem. I am very satisfied. read more

Oh, we were taken! In June traveling from FL, to RI our rigs alternator needed replacement. With recommendation of AAA, we used Carters to assist our needs. The owner came out to where we were stranded and he got us started and we followed him 18 miles to his shop. We had fuel filters on board that we had planned on changing when we got to our Destination. We spoke to the owner and decided since they were working on bus already, to go ahead and change the fuel filters too. The original filters we had bought from NAPA were not the right size, so they instructed us. Since they are also a NAPA dealer they exchanged the filters for us. $797.69 later, we were on our way. we traveled another 250 miles and began to lose power. What happened was, we were losing fuel. the fuel filter was defective. I called Carters Service Center and he found us a mobile repair, and he explained that this was warrantied, we would be responsible to pay the mobile company and he, Carters Service center would reimburse us. the bill for that job, was $357.22 FOUR months later we have not been reimbursed, although have collected many good excuses as to when check would arrive. read more

So, my daughter had to start driving back to college today from MD to FL. However, there was decent size snowstorm that hit MD/VA/NC. She ended up sliding off the left side of 95S and was unable to get her car out of the snow. She contacted the insurance company to use roadside assistance but a police officer showed up while she was on the phone with them and said she couldn't waif the 60 minutes for the insurance company and that she will have to use a local company. He contacted a "local" company which was about 10 -15 minutes away and she was pulled back onto the road. However, and aside from the "good ol' boy network and having to use a local company which I believe is just a way for them to make extra money, this is why I am giving one star. A normal bill to simply pull a stuck car back to the road (approximately 25-35 feet) is around $65 (with an honest towing company but clearly not this one). However, due to the inclement weather, I would expect a slight increase in the bill. This dishonest and gouging company charged my daughter $200 to pull her to the road. She didn't need to be towed any where other than the 25 feet back to the road. Then, they wouldn't allow her to pay at the site of the job. She had to follow him back to his shop in order to pay and get the receipt. Do not use this company! They will take advantage of you in a heartbeat. Complete garbage and they don't care who they take advantage of as long as they get their money. read more

We limped into Carter's shop. We knew we had broken another fuel line and had been leaking fuel coating our towed car with diesel fuel. We had the engine serial number at the ready and we also had a diagram of the injector fuel lines. We had also removed the access panel under the bed so that the tech could access the engine. I also pointed out which fuel line had broken. The young tech recognized the problem and they ordered a new fuel line but told us it wouldn't arrive till the next morning. Early the next day they installed the new line and we were shortly on our way. After about ten miles of travel, the engine started to run roughly and then we could again smell the odor of diesel fuel. We called them about 1:00 PM that day and they told us they would come out to where we were in the nearby town of Wakefield, VA. Mr. Carter came out about two hours later and determined that the young tech had not properly installed the new fuel line. Mr Carter had not done the first work on it, nor had he supervised the young tech's work. He proceeded to have tools brought out to him by the young tech and began to show the young tech how an old pro does things. He also installed a set of vibration isolators to prevent the fuel lines from vibrating themselves to the point of failure. Carter made good on the repair by spending some time with the young tech and this time the problem was properly repaired and we were finally able to be on our way again, the next day. So, this story has a happy ending but was not without some trepidations. read more
