My husband has a nut allergy and will steer clear of the toppings because of cross contamination. It's officially summer now, so Carvel should definitely be one of your spots to hit up if you're venturing outside these days and in South Orange. This Carvel location is a popular spot for families. This Sunday, my friend and I stopped in after lunch at BGR just a few blocks down the avenue. We wanted something sweet to round off our meal. Plus, it was such a hot day that ice cream seemed like the perfect choice. If you want ice cream and are in SO, Carvel is a top option. Right now, safety precautions in place include allowing only 5 persons in the shop at once (there's a sign on the door, but you may miss it like my friend and me). There's also a clear tarp divider between staff behind the counter and customers. You hand your card to the cashier and get it back (the card reader isn't a self-service one in case you're curious about that stuff). Despite the whole social distancing thing, and how the getting-ice-cream experience isn't like how it used to be - with masks and stuff, people working in the store and customers seemed to be a good spirits. Maybe this applies to you, reader, but it's been a week since outdoor dining has been allowed and things are loosening up, and I'm just recently venturing into other neighborhoods and municipalities. For me, it can get a little nerve wracking as you aren't sure what you'll see in a place that you haven't been to since pre-Covid-19. After Sunday's experience, I can say that I'll be back here again this summer whenever I need an ice cream fix. I love carvel ice cream since I was a kid growing up in the Bronx!! My best to birthday cakes were from there. I was in the mood for extra extra crunchies and ice cream, vanilla that is. Once again all those happy mementos came back with each and every spoonful. Great job!!! read more

Loved it. The was my first time at a Carvel boutique. I WAS a Baskin Robins customer but I think Carvel just gained a new customer. This boutique is rather small though. Who new on a Sunday night at 8:30, it would be sooo crowded that the line went out the door?! There were 3 assistants on staff and I think they did a great job. Aside from all the people, the line wasn't stagnant for too long. There's not much street parking, but there are little metered lots in the near by area so keep your eyes open. Came here for dessert and was very glad that we chose this place! The people working here are amazing and super friendly!! My friend got the vanilla soft serve cone, another for the mint soft serve cone, and I got the pumpkin soft serve cone. I got a size kids cone and it was just the right amount! If you like pumpkin spice stuff, then I'd recommend getting the pumpkin spice soft serve! Very light and creamy and tastes just like the drinks! I also like how they give the cone holders to protect your hands from when the ice cream drips! Also- I'm sad that I don't remember her name but the person who rung me up was so nice!! She was very efficient and was kind enough to stop me when I was about to leave, saying "Oh wait, here are some napkins for you and your friends!" I thank her so much for her concern! I've been craving frozen treats the past two weeks, and considering I've never tasted ice cream from Carvel, I made the South Orange location my next stop. Walk in and you'll see the ice cream cakes on your right, and the bonnets and other small treats near the counter. Bananas Foster Sundae Dasher (Large @ $6.99): I bought this about five days ago, but I still have 1/3 of it in my freezer--no joke. The vanilla ice cream was perfect, and the chunks of banana added were freshly sliced. As for the generous serving of caramel, it tastes a lot like Werther's hard candy but in melted form. My only complaint is that the woman making my Dasher, who is probably the owner, went a tad bit overboard with the caramel. The large is simply way too much ice cream for me, so I'd probably stick with a small if I ever order this again. We also ordered a large Fudge Brownie Dasher (also $6.99) and a large Vanilla Sundae with peanuts (~$5.39). I didn't try either of those, but I can say that the other Dasher was packed with ice cream, hot fudge, and large chunks of brownies; the sundae looked a bit small for a large. Carvel is a solid local option for ice cream. My craving is definitely gone, but I did enjoy the Dasher. read more

The prices that are posted do not match the price that I was charged. I visited there on three separate occasions since the state opened up due to the pandemic. Each time that I visited I was charged up to a dollar more than the display price. Yesterday I went there and ordered a large cup of ice cream and the display price was $3.99. However I was charged $5 and I don't understand how because taxes in New Jersey are only about 6%. Also the hand sanitizer is not visible when you walk into the restaurant. Even after you pay you may not see it until you turn around and it's on the counter, away from the customer by the wall. So it seems like they don't even have hand sanitizer because the initial sanitizer box you see when you walk in has no bottle in it, it's empty and there's no sign telling you that they have another bottle of hand sanitizer. read more

Here came for ice cream cake to celebrate my boyfriend's and mine birthday (Feb 21st babies). First of all, finding parking was easy on a Wednesday evening. There was only one person on duty. She was quite nice. She wrote our happy birthday message on the cake. We had a $2 coupon. Gave us no problem with it. There were many ice cream cakes in the frozen. Different sizes to choose from. Definitely buying an ice cream cake from a Carvel store is cheaper than buying it at a supermarket. The cake was good. But I wasn't blow away like I usually am when it comes to ice cream cake. They are patient with customers, for us it takes a while before we order, we always seem to want to try different flavor each time. Theres is seating with a street view. Their ice cream choices are pretty vast in terms of hard ice cream, and soft serve has a few good choices as well. When I asked for strawberry topping but mentioned to please make sure it hadn't touched any nuts, and lady behind the counter stopped what she was doing in mid-scoop of the strawberry sauce and said, very concerned, "Are you allergic?" and I said "Yes," and she dropped the scoop and went to the refrigerator and took the strawberries from from that container, to prevent any chance of cross-contamination. It was very kind and unexpected, as many ice cream places in the past have just simply told me well, I can't promise you anything, you're taking your chances. This was a very welcome and wonderful surprise. I'd definitely go there again (and have!) The only downside is that parking is very difficult. You're going to have to park at one of 3 lots a few blocks away and either walk up or down semi-steep hills to get there. Still, it's doable. read more

You can't go wrong with Carvel ice cream, and there's pretty good service at this one. Parking is a pain.

LOVE Carvel! So many different kinds of treats and flavors. All of them are delicious! I indulge like crazy with their sundae dashers.

Only down side is they have yet to get with the time for food allergies. No gluten free options, so if you have that disposition, stick to the classics... but they have real hot fudge!! yay hot fudge! read more

Every year I get my husband a Fudgie the Whale cake for his birthday. I've gone to a couple different Carvel locations over the years to buy the cake, and the one we got this year from this Carvel was absolutely the best - there was a little more of the delicious chocolate icing than on other cakes and they gave us *extra crunchies!* on the side so we didn't have to be sad eating middle pieces of the cake.
