My fiancé and I like to visit The Able Baker while we're in Maplewood to get some treats for ourselves. I highly recommend their coffee, I get a different drink each time and I'm never disappointed. The bakery can get a bit crazy and crammed, it's fairly small, and there's a lot going on, especially on the weekends. The staff move quickly to get orders ready and out, everyone works efficiently. As for the treats, my fiancé has enjoyed a variety of goodies from there, especially the cupcakes. I usually opt for a box of the gluten-free (also vegan) raspberry bars. The box is definitely pricey, so it's absolutely a treat for me to splurge on myself. You can also purchase pre-packed goods for a present, to bring with you to a party, or to take home. It has limited space for sitting, and you may have to share a public table, but the desserts are well worth it. The décor and staff dress code are old-fashioned Rosie-the-Riveter-inspired style. My first interaction with the Able Baker was their strawberry rhubarb pie. I grew up with pies my grandmother made, too many to count of really delicious pies. And I've made 'a few' myself. I've tried the scones, royal frosted cookies, and now the lemon loaf (GF) and have loved them all. It does tend to be busy but the staff is friendly and moves you on through. I love the location of the Abel Baker, right in the beginning of the heart of maplewood. I spotted their outdoor pick up window and I just had to try a few goodies. Their menu is a good size, not too overwhelming. I wanted to try a few different things so I asked the worker what some of his favorites were. I went with the chocolate chip cookie, the blueberry lemon crumb, the banana bread and the chocolate chip scone. The star of the show was the banana bread. I am a sucker for a great slice of banana bread and this one was really really good. It was super moist and not too overwhelming with any flavor particularly. My second favorite was the chocolate chip cookie. It was perfectly crunchy on the outside and chewy in the middle. The blueberry lemon crumb was ok. It didn't stand out to me, the flavors were a little bland. The scone was also just all right, I know scone is meant to be dry but this one was just a little too dry for me. If you're ever in the area definitely stop by for a slice of banana bread and I'll definitely be back to try their cupcakes, they also looked fabulous. We randomly popped in one afternoon and I decided to try the pumpkin chocolate chip bread and the banana bread (I bought a loaf of each). My family and I devoured it! I got the kids cupcakes and they absolutely loved them. This week (Jan '25) I went in and they had French onion hand pies. I grabbed one, a cookie sampler and another loaf of pumpkin cc bread! I'm writing this from a gluten sensitive family. We are not celiac. This is officially our favorite discovery as of yet. Unlike many places that make gluten free baked goods that don't break when you throw them against the wall, this gem of a place has the finest gluten free baked goods. We got the cherry vanilla scones, pumpkin chocolate chip bread, double chocolate cookies and the cranberry orange cake slices. The cakes are soft and moist. Flavors were spot on. There wasn't even a hint of dryness. We also picked up a small flourless chocolate cake that was packaged. For celiacs, this was the only item that was pre-packaged and away from other gluten containing goods. The only reason I won't give this place 5 stars is because despite its brilliant baked goods (cupcakes, bars, brownies, scones and cookies) and good espresso coffees (the cortado is better than serviceable), they don't have one unique standout signature goodie that they can call their own. Palmer's nearby may not get the crowds but their salted corn muffin is out of this world which is why they have the edge over Able. Similarly, Erie bakery in Rutherford has its citrus olive oil Bundt cakes which makes that little place also worth the queues. Still, if carbs are your thing, this place is fantastic and for aspiring commercial bakers, it's always good to get a glimpse behind the glamor and watch some seriously good craftspeople at work. read more

I was given a box of cookies as a gift. They obviously have high quality ingredients, but none of the flavors "pop". I was told that the cookies come prefixed, without the option of picking your own. This leaves the consumer buying cookies the receiver may not like. Also the ginger cookies are strong and should not be packed with other cookies. Is it criticism to suggest just a little less topping on the cupcakes so not to distract from the gorgeous texture and pure flavor of the bottoms? Good idea to preorder for an occasion, but anything you come away with --- even your second, third or fourth choice---will hit. The coffee is good but adding milk and sweetener is a pain while juggling packages and children or commuter bags. What are we tipping the staff for? And since COVID there is a Soup Nazi vibe with the service and I just avoid it. Also - why in such a diverse town are the bulk of the patrons White? It makes me feel uncomfortable. I love the vibe here. It's so cute. I come here regularly after yoga at Baker St Yoga which is right across the way. The service is very friendly and the food is really good. I like that their gluten free stuff (banana bread for example) doesn't have the grainy and/or dry gluten free taste. You wouldn't know it was gluten free. Their scones are also top notch. My aunt's husband died last month, so we ordered her a nice birthday cake to cheer her up. The pre-paid order said pick up by 3pm. When I got there at 2pm, it had closed at 1pm for outside heat. Other bakeries in the area were open. So I had to go buy another cake elsewhere, after already paying for this one. Also the back door was open and the light was on in the kitchen. Last week I ordered 2 coffees at the window, and 3 women who worked there were busy flirting with a white guy skateboarder for 20 minutes while we waited for coffee and 4 people ahead of us were served. We had to ask 4 times for our order, and no one give a response though they obviously heard us and looked in our direction. They're too into themselves. How do you run a business like this? This charming gem hires customer friendly staff, adorably outfitted, who know their products! Everything was delicious and well priced for the quality. Our favorite was the savory scone as a welcomed surprise but you just can't go wrong here! A few outdoor table allowed for pets outside complete with a jar of dog cookies so they too felt welcomed.
