Tried a few famed and beloved Bifana places during my trip to Lisboa and this was my absolute FAVORITE!! So much so that we returned two more times for breakfast throughout our week stay. Their bifana has a really good amount of savory meat inside (others I tried only had a thin slice) and the most delicious flavor. The bread it was served on was superb - light and fluffy and perfectly crusted. Right around the corner from the Mundial Hotel where I was staying. Hits all the marks for inexpensive local food in a tourist area. Lots of choices on the menu other than the bifanas, but when in Rome, or in this case, Lisbon, you go with the flow. Unlike the experiences of other reviewers here, my waiter spoke excellent unaccented American English, and we actually joked around a bit about his being in the witness protection program. My sandwich arrived quickly, seemed a bit bland at first, but with a couple of hits of the Peri Peri sauce which was on the table, and accompanied by a beer, it certainly hit the spot. The "Portuguese" roll, incidentally, was not what I'm familiar with here in the eastern US, more like a soft whole wheat bun. Not better or worse, but different. Usually I opt for eating outside when I can, but in this case, I don't see the charm. The restaurant is on a city square, near a metro stop, and lots of busses. You're surrounded by traffic fumes, pigeons, locals, tourists, commuters, and as I was to learn on another day, pickpockets. Not much English is spoken here so there was a lot of gesturing and pointing and attempts at speaking Portuguese (which turned out to be poorly spoke. Spanish - but at least we tried!) The map on Yelp is extremely inaccurate which cause us to walk in circles for a good 20-30 minutes. In the midst of all this, we participated in the Championship parade of the Portuguese national soccer team - so all in all not too bad when it comes to getting lost. My husband ordered two bifanas to go. They are juicy and well flavored, and even our son was a big fan. This seems like a very local shop even though it's in the very popular and touristy square.
