We all know Mexican food is no good in Pittsburgh. We must admit it. People say in hushed tones in dark corners, "I wish I could get a burrito around here and not be disappointed. Sure, I want the basics - like tacos and guac and enchiladas - but sometimes I want to mix it up, like a t-bone steak topped with chorizo and cheese, or shrimp cooked in a pineapple. I dream of a menu with an unreasonable number of options, all at reasonable prices. And even if I pick one of those options at random, I want it to always be delicious. Indeed, Jim Gaffigan says that the foundation of all Mexican dishes is the same four ingredients, so why can't they all be delicious? Surely, surely such a Mexican restaurant like this exists in Pittsburgh, but now that ICE destroyed a just-okay place like Emilianos, I guess we'll just have to accept that good Mexican restaurants don't exist around here." Yes, these are all things that we say. I myself said this for years. But now that Casa del Tequila has come along, I can no longer say it with a straight face. It's official: Pittsburgh now has a Mexican restaurant that's actually really good. This has been one of our go-to spots for a while now, and everything here really is delicious, whether it's the fajitas, burritos, quesadillas, chimichangas, or more unique options (yes, they do cook shrimp in a pineapple). Even my two-year-old loves the place, who calls salsa, guac, and queso all "dip." The staff are really friendly, and everything really is pretty affordable (especially when you consider that you get basically two meals worth of food from any order, but it's just one meal for you, and you feel a bit ashamed about that, but it's also so satisfying). Yes, Casa del Tequila has immediately become a cornerstone of Pittsburgh Mexican food, which is only fitting, because it sits on a corner at a prime location in Squirrel Hill. I can only hope that the Manor movie theater next door now smells like those delicious, delicious fajitas. read more

Located in the heart of the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Casa Del Tequila is a Mexican restaurant with extensive menu options. It's right up my alley as there is a lunch menu, and they offer à la carte options for those that don't want a full/heavy meal. The dining area is clean & tastefully decorated with a pleasant atmosphere, and there's plenty of bar seating as well. Meals start off with complimentary chips & salsa, which are happily refilled upon request. We started off with cheese nachos, which were tasty without being overly cheesy- a great option for something to munch on while waiting for food. We went with 3 chicken tacos, 2 (à la carte) chicken quesadillas, and a chicken chimichanga (lunch special). While none of the meals tantalized the tastebuds with regards to flavor, all the meals were fresh & delicious, and were a decently sized lunch portion that fulfilled the job of filling us up without being too heavy of a meal. Service was friendly and efficient, and the food was served quickly. I'd rate the overall experience a solid 4/5, as we loved the food, extensive menu options, and the reasonable prices. I'd return to Casa Del Tequila and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others looking for Mexican food in Pittsburgh. read more

Y'all. The food was good. The prices are affordable. The space is clean. The service is enthusiastic and friendly. What more could you want? My husband told me about this place so I had to come see for myself. I came, I saw, I loved. The lighting in this place is awful and white, which really puts me off. The food was just okay. I mean, I'm from California, and a California burrito is a carne asada burrito with fries on it. Instead, it was a completely different set of ingredients that left me confused and sad. I've been here a couple times. This is a fine, classic Mexican-American restaurant. Huge menu, rice and beans with lots of dishes. Got the brand and queso dip to start and I found the queso to be way too runny. My carne asada was good-a little over salted. Tried the shrimp and they were delicious. Drinks are average. read more

Great new spot in Squirrel Hill! One of the only Mexican restaurants in this area of town and far better for the neighborhood vibe than the old dive bar that preceded it in this location. The place does still have a bar layout, with double-deck seating and some large TVs high on the wall behind a bar. But it's plenty family-friendly too. I went here for an early dinner on a Saturday with a larger group (7 total w/ 3 kids) and had a very nice meal. The place wasn't too crowded and service was pretty quick and very accommodating, especially with the kids' orders and special requests (little kids want spoons for everything). We were all happy with our food. My 5-yr-old got to pick and choose just what she wanted - shrimp taco with a soft shell plus some beans and rice. My wife got the enchiladas supreme and enjoyed them. From my end of the table, they looked pretty slathered in sauce (that might work for some more than others). I got the tacos al pastor and really liked them! They had great flavor and were pretty hearty, with some nice garnishes to add to the taste. We'll be back again. Grateful to have this place in the neighborhood! read more

Nice little place with very friendly staff. This is basically the same layout as what had been Silky's, with better lighting and some new decor. The menu is quite extensive, but the vegetarian section is a little disappointing: mostly combination platters of various vegetarian filler. We dined in this time, and the overall experience was great. The beer list was basically what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant: no real craft options, but all the typical Mexican lagers with a few domestic lagers. In terms of the food, it was nicely presented. The vegetarian fajitas arrived with the typical flare of a super-hot cast iron platter and corresponding steaming vegetables. The vegetables were generally nicely seasoned and crisp, but the carrots seemed like they were probably thawed from frozen. The shrimp salad was more interesting than expected, with a good portion of shrimp and crisp white onions over lettuce. A little more lettuce and a little less onion would have been welcome, but that's a personal preference. The fish tacos were a mixed bag. The fish was nicely prepared, with excellent texture and flavor. The lettuce and tomato toppings were nice, but the tacos ultimately needed a little more flavor. It really seemed like they needed to be served with additional salsas or hot sauces to fill out the flavor. Or maybe the space needed some sort of topping bar. All told, this was a nice experience. I was surprised to see how much the new space resembled the old Silky's, given how much time had been spent on renovations. I was generally happy with everything we ordered, but there's room for improvement. All that having been said, the overall experience was good, the service was good, and the beer was crisp and refreshing. read more

Convenient to the Manor Theater we thought this would be the perfect place to eat after our movie. What a nice job they have done with the interior. We decided to eat upstairs as it seemed to be a bit warmer and that was a good choice. It was really pleasant and the service was quick and friendly. As none of us had eaten here we ordered a variety of food. My Mexicanos burrito was very good and I'm told the quesadilla was extremely good. The only downside was perhaps the taste of the flan. That could have been a matter of personal judgement so others will need to decide for themselves. The menu offered many very affordable choices and we will return to make some new ones. If you like Mexican food then this is definitely a good place to go in Squirrel Hill. read more

Pretty standard Mexican / Tex-Mex fare at this place. I feel like the food could have been better and the potential was there - but maybe I just got unlucky with the couple of items I ordered. We had a good time and enjoyed it overall, as we were there for a celebratory weekend. The waiter was really nice and he did bring the graduating kids some shots - which was a nice gesture. I ordered a combo meal with a cheese enchilada and a tostada. The tostada came out completely soggy, which was actually quite disappointing. We came for lunch during the week. My chicken chimichanga lunch special had good flavors. It was just the right portion for lunch. I liked the cheese sauce that was on top of everything. First time trying this new Mexican restaurant in Sq Hill. Came on a Friday night at 6:30pm and they were quite busy. The food was very good - excellent beef tips, amazing chile rellenos, the beans and rice were flavorful and even the free chips and salsa were good. Ordered the Cadillac Margarita (fresh lime juice-no sweet/sour mix!) with Tajin on the rim - also very, very good. Hubs is a beer drinker and after tasting my Marg he ordered one for himself! I hope they create a host station by the front door on the weekends; lots of people were waiting to be seated and there were plenty of tables open, but the staff was busy and the waiting customers not easy to see. That being said, the staff were lovely - kind and tried hard to please. You should give this place a try if you like Mexican food! read more

We are gluten free and although we don't need a dedicated fryer, we can't consume gluten. I did ask about what was gluten free and not. After ordering the nachos, served them, and took a few bites, we were informed that the queso had beer in it. It's not listed in the description. I took a friend there on December 30th for her birthday. It was delightful. From the ambiance to the service to the food itself. The staff sang 'Feliz Compleanos" I ordered the Guadalajara Special and my friend got the rib-eye dinner we shared an order of Ceviche which is sort of a shrimp salad with avacado, pico de gallo and slices of lime. The ceviche was a little spicey but delicious. The Guadalajara special was huge, took up two large plates. I ended up taking most of it home with me. when you go to to Casa del Tequila be sure to take an hearty appetite with you.
