I loved this place! The food was delicious and the drinks were super tasty! The margaritas are so cute and served in a mason jar. Depending on the size of the jar, it can serve either 1-2 people for the "half" or normal size and for the "full" it can serve 3-4 and boy are they worth every drop! The service was very friendly and to be seated we got lucky and didnt have to wait long however, the wait can be lengthy depending on the time you go because the restaurant isnt very big on the inside. Even though it isnt super big it still feels comfortable and the atmosphere is family friendly! I ordered the Birria Fries and it was DELCIOUS!!!! Wow! What a change from my first visits years ago. I've come here a few times recently, and the experience has been nothing short of tremendous. Servers and bartenders are very friendly. I had to come back to try a dessert- The Lady of Guadalupe.- ok, so I named it myself and it's a combo of fried ice cream and so-papilla but OMG... Solid Mexican food in the North Hills! Went with my husband for a quick date night. We joined the waitlist online, and even though it was a Saturday night at 7:30, we immediately had a table available! It was packed with people, but that made for a fun environment. I had the tamale of the day, husband had tacos de Birria. Highly recommend both! We also loved the chips and salsa. They really hit the spot! What a shame. I really wanted to like this place from the things I've heard about it but I knew from the second I walked in this was not going to be good. The layout is without a doubt the most whitewashed, stereotypical Mexican spot I've ever seen. It took almost 40min for my 3 tacos and 6 wings to come out but I'll give them a break since it was 6:30 when I went. Our waiter Noah was fine. Didn't bother us and only came over when it was appropriate to The birria tacos looked like they were sitting under a heat lamp for 30min and tasted like it too for how dry they were. The consommé was barely worm and just under flavored. The side rice had clumps of the seasoning in it so a bite was either okay or a pile of sodium The wings actually were kinda fucking bomb. We had not been to the Franklin Inn since the 90's (gasp!). We went back tonight, for my husband's birthday dinner. We started with happy hour at the bar when they opened at 4 o'clock. They have a 4 PM to 6 PM happy hour Monday through Friday. We had a house margarita which they serve in a mason jar and we got a half mason jar which is 16 ounces and then also a Mojito... Which literally was a properly made Mojito and the best one that I've had locally that I can remember in recent memory. Their chips and salsa at the bar are still on the house, which is a rarity these days because most Mexican places now charge you for chips and salsa not to mention they make salsa from scratch and have a different kind each week and tonight it was banana peppers and pineapple, and it was slightly spicy and definitely tasty. We ended up having two baskets of chips and two bowls of salsa! For dinner tonight my husband ordered the chicken fajitas and he ended up bringing half of them home. I ordered the street tacos based on a yelp review from someone from Texas and I was not disappointed. I ordered portobello mushroom street tacos and I had black bean and corn salad and black beans that were sort of like refried black beans as my sides. We left stuffed with no room for dessert. Our server was friendly and we definitely hope to return and not stay away for another 20 years. Hahaha. They are off the beaten path in Franklin Park, they have a large gravel parking lot. We stopped by our favorite Mexican restaurant on a dreary Friday night and grabbed a seat at the bar to wait for our table. The bartenders were slammed and made quick work mixing up some fantastic blood orange margaritas with a spicy chili lime rim. Fabulous! When we got seated, we got a fresh basket of homemade chips and salsa. The Inn's salsa is one of my all time favs and the salty chips offered the perfect salsa delivery system. We ordered the grilled chorizo sausage app that was really fantastic and so unique. It's served with grilled onions, tortilla and sauce and tasted like I had just thrown it into our charcoal grill. The chorizo is specially made for the Inn and just the right spice level. You have to try it! For entrees, we had the seafood enchiladas and the chili lime Faroe Islands salmon special. That salmon was just delicious!! Seafood enchiladas are always a winner with that yummy sauce. We had such a great meal! Wendy & John are still knocking it out of the park in the N Hills. read more

Took a drive out north for some errands and realized I'd be stuck in 5' o'clock nonsense. So heading to Franklin inn for a margarita was a better decision. If you like a strong margarita this is the place for you! I got the special margarita of the month which was pineapple and it tasted like straight tequila. Both my husband and I felt it after a few sips. The chips and salsa were great. Especially if you have kids. Ours were happy to sit munching away. I got the Jalisco spicy shrimp tacos which were really big and honestly didn't even need sides. They had a pretty big kick of spice once I was finished. Overall good experience. read more

I had a great experience at Franklin Inn! I met my friend for drinks & dinner on a Tuesday evening, around 6:30pm. We got a table for 2 right away in their dining area. The atmosphere was pleasant, the perfect amount of people but didn't feel overcrowded or overwhelmed. We got the queso to start and they brought out a complimentary basket of chips which was a nice touch! The queso was fantastic. You could totally tell that it was made from scratch. Literally SO good. For dinner I got the fresco enchilada with the black bean salad and again SO GOOD. I never really finish Mexican food because the amount of grease at chains usually fills me up pretty quickly. I was impressed with the fresh ingredients. I finished my enchilada and luckily had some black bean salad to take home! I ordered the skinny margarita, half mason jar. The half mason jar still gave me two pours in the margarita glass which was nice. I could see the value in ordering a whole mason jar for a group of friends. I didn't love the taste of the skinny marg, it was sweetest with monkfruit (which is great and more healthy) but I didn't personally like the taste. My husband and I stopped by on a Saturday evening for dinner, and, as expected, the restaurant was busy. Tip: Use the Yelp app to reserve a table in advance. I unfortunately did not do so. Our wait for a table was about 40 minutes. The restaurant is cozy with many tables placed in a small space. Our waitress was friendly and had a perky personality. Quite some time passed before she brought out our waters and appetizer. We were over 50 minutes into the service by the time that she brought out our entrees. Please note that if there is a waiting list, customers are allowed to use tables for 90 minutes before that table gets cleaned for the next customers. Here are my reviews for the foods: Tortilla chips with guacamole and salsa - 4.5 stars - The chips were fresh, crispy, and perfectly salty. The guacamole was also fresh and had a nice flavor. The salsa was chunky and had some spiciness. Vegetable fajita - 3.5 stars - In a container were three fajitas. The vegetables included green peppers, red peppers, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, zucchini, and mushrooms. On the side were lettuce, guacamole, and pico de gallo. This entree could have used slightly more salt. Steak fajita - 2 stars - My husband described this entree as "garbage" and the "worst food that I have eaten in 2-3 years." He said that the entree seemed to be created by someone who has not previously eaten authentic Mexican food. Ouch. Specifically, he said that the entree lacked flavor from salt and spices. Please note that my husband is part Mexican and grew up eating some authentic foods. His entree did look fresh, but it could have used more seasoning. read more

Great tex mex style restaurant that has been delivering for decades. Took my kid to celebrate a special occasion up north of the city and told her about this place I used to go to when I was I kid and I was astounded at how vibrant and happening it still remains. My husband and I drive by this restaurant all the time and decided to give it a try. We arrived at the restaurant about two hours after the restaurant opened and ordered the special on the chalk board that greeted us upon entering the restaurant. I can't remember exactly what it was called, but beef tips and risotto were the main ingredients. Not incredibly "Mexican" I don't think? But it sounded good! We also ordered a tamale. We had our 15 month old son with us and he was doing great, eating the snacks we brought for him, and being well behaved. However, our food took a ridiculously long time to come out and after almost 1.5 hours waiting it still wasn't out. Our waitress did bring out the tamale somewhat quickly it the middle was completely frozen. We also appreciated the chips and salsa to munch on while we waited. Eventually I took our son out to the car and we asked for our food to go because there was no way he was going to stay happy whenever the food was finally ready. Popped in for dinner recently with my wife and our son. We weren't starving but have been wanting to try Franklin Inn for a while now so we planned to share an entree and side. We were quickly seated and brought complimentary chips and salsa. While looking over the menu we ordered the queso which came out a short time later and we both really enjoyed it. For our main course we opted to share one tamale and ordered the special of the night which was beef tips with risotto. This is unfortunately where our experience went from 5 to 3 stars. To start, our tamale came out 15-20 minutes later and was still frozen in the center. We sent it back and thankfully they were very apologetic and comped that part of the meal. A warmed-through tamale came out another 15 minutes later. By this time we'd been seated for about 45 minutes and no word on the main dish. The waitress came over soon after and mentioned that since this was the first time this Special was being served and it was taking longer than expected to get all the components ready. By this time we asked them to simply put the food in a to-go container and we took it home about an hour and 15 minutes after we'd initially been seated. This restaurant is nothing but amazing. The employees are extremely sweet, the food is so tasty, and the margaritas are phenomenal. The guac was a little spicy this time, but still very yummy. As for our meals, I order the House Burrito every single time I dine here. The spiced ground beef is some of the best I have ever had. Plus, it comes with two sides of your choice. We also ordered Mushroom Empanadas. I have never tried an empanada before, and I was definitely not disappointed. The mushroom filling was so flavorful, but the dough was to die for. It nearly melted in your mouth with every bite. I definitely recommend trying the homemade empanadas. Last but NOT least, the margaritas! If you choose to dine here, be sure to order one of the margaritas. There are a handful of flavors to choose from so you should not have trouble picking one you will absolutely love. There are half and whole sizes. The half size is the perfect amount for one person, and the whole is perfect for two people. Although, a half comes with more than one drink and a whole is more than two. Who doesn't love some extra margarita! We did not decide to order dessert today, but everything on the menu is amazing. Lastly, our waitress was so kind despite how extremely busy she was. My go-to for cozy Mexican food in the Pittsburgh area! Visited on a Monday night around 7:30 and there was no wait for a table. The bar was bustling and there were still plenty of customers, as they ALWAYS have customers no matter what day you visit! (For weekend evenings I recommend giving yourself an hour-long grace period for a wait time.) It's not a huge space, so be prepared for some noise on a busy night. Last night we were next to a VERY rowdy table and the sound did take over the entire room at times, but that's pretty standard on most visits. I shared the special margarita of the day with my friend - they offer the option of a LARGE mason jar to share. It was cucumber jalapeño flavored and it was refreshing and delicious, not spicy! The rim had tajin instead of salt and it was a perfect compliment. For dinner I had mole enchiladas with shredded chicken, which is my Franklin Inn meal of choice - I've probably had it upwards of 10 times on various occasions! My sides were fajita veggies and the black bean and corn salad. I find that those two sides are perfect contrasts for the starch of the enchilada. The chips and salsa were perfect as always! The portions here are so big that I get to enjoy half of my dinner for lunch today, which makes me a doubly happy customer. Some of my other recommendations are the hot wings appetizer, the queso, any of their enchiladas, their street tacos, and their fajitas. They also have amazing desserts, but good luck ordering them as you'll almost certainly be too full to try them! I'll be coming back here for many visits to come. read more

The food here is amazing. It's homemade Mexican and there are very unique items on the menu. I actually love their wings. They are grilled wings and honestly the best I've ever had anywhere! The restaurant appears to be an old house, which is a great plus to the ambiance. The downside? Because it's an old house it's small and noisy. But I don't mind. Love this place! Great food and margaritas! Highly recommend the Jalisco Shrimp Tacos with side of black beans and corn salad with Mexican rice. The Cucumber/Jalapeño Margaritas are fire! As I previously remarked we are long time diners here. The wait staff and bar staff are friendly and usually very attentive. The food is usually very good especially wings and burritos .. the drinks used to be much better especially when Mary Kay Julie and Eric were there.. my biggest complaint is charging extra for sour crème a small guacamole when we asked for both as a side but the thing that really got me was you charged me .50 for soda water in my drink ( which was mostly soda) all told it was 6.00 in up charges ... not a lot of money but it was roughly 10% of our bill First time I've felt this way walking out of here.. read more
