A bit of a splurge but worth it when in Madrid and in the mood for a steak. Located a few blocks east of Puerta del Sol, it's nice because there are no hordes of people you have to navigate to find it. This is a place for people who appreciate their food and the experience, not for the tourist masses that are looking to get fed quick and cheap. It is an interesting set up as they have dining rooms on both sides of the street. I was in the one on the east side of the street and taken downstairs into the basement which has the looks of a refurbished ancient cellar. I had a 2 top in the corner to myself with a great view of the room so I could appreciate what everyone else was eating. I had a very civilized time. Frenetic Tapas this is not. There are white linen tablecloths present, a small container of housemade chimichurri, menus on line, great wi-fi service, a full bar and wine list, and menus that are bovine centric. I had an Argentine Negroni (the Argentine nod is due to a splash of Fernet Branca giving it a slight minty taste on the back end) and a glass of affordable, high ranking Tempranillo. These were perfect with the olive and bread starters with EVOO/Spanish vinegar on the table to mix to taste and also served with compounded butter. I was there to eat and the Mollejas (veal sweetbreads) are a must in my opinion. They are listed as a house specialty and come on a charcoal heated sizzle plate served with a side of broad flaked sea salt to finish to taste. Crispy edges and creamy textures throughout with a hit of grilled lemon and they were simply sublime. I also took down an Entraña (skirt steak) that seemed larger than its described 300 grams. Also served on a sizzle plate it was perfectly cooked by some expert grill guys upstairs. To ensure that I ate something with color, I had a salad on the side that I dressed to taste with the EVOO/Spanish vinegar on the table. The service here is friendly, professional, and not overbearing. My meal was about $85 USD which is pricey by typical Madrid eating standards but it was worth it considering the quality, quantity, and variety of what I experienced. Absolutely incredible evening- I passed on the starters because I had my eye on main course and sides. I had flap steak with fries and leek confit- beautifully prepared and the steak was the best steak I've ever had in my life- cooked medium rare to perfection. Eclectic interior is very inviting. Love the windows, especially the locking mechanism. Now, for the food... Ordered filet (medium rare), mixed veggies and a house salad. First off, they brought everything out at the same time. By the time I got to my filet it was cold! The sautéed mixed veggies were cut julienne style which was not called out on the menu. They were also mushy, no texture whatsoever. Salad was great! I ordered the filet medium rare; see pics and decide for yourself if this is medium rare. It took 5+ minutes to get my waiter's attention ....finally flagged him down as he was walking by. I asked him to warm the filet and why he brought everything at once. He replied "my mistake, I thought you wanted to mix the meat with the salad or vegetables". Really?! At that point, one of his colleagues walked up with a table top hibachi type cooking device and asked if I wanted to cook myself. I politely (okay, maybe not so polite) asked him to simply take it back to the kitchen and warm it. He returned about 7mins later with the filet and it was great. The veal sweetbread in America is a delicacy and here it was amazing and very affordable. The charcoal grill made the sweetbread taste amazing. My family and I were excited to have our first formal dinner in Madrid but to our disappointment we were greeted with nothing but dismal service and not to say it lightly discrimination. We were properly dressed for the occasion but nevertheless we were escorted to the basement. Next thing I notice is that most of the customer were Asian in the basement and no Asians were in the mainly dining areas upstairs. Unbeknownst to the waiter I do speak fluent Spanish and overheard the say " go help the chinos". These senseless attacks to a decent family of Three is unacceptable no matter in what country. Food was mediocre. Once they realized that I spoke Spanish the tone changed a bit but the damage was done. I still left them a tip as a courtesy but this will be an unforgettable moment for me and sadly, a negative about my experience here in Spain. Need to preface this with the following: I'm half Argentine -- the half that loves cows that are lovingly grass fed in the Pampas and get to soak up the sun. La Cabaña is the second best Argentine steakhouse I've been to in my LIFE. If you're curious, my number one favorite is in Buenos Aires (La Brigada, get the entraña al punto). But I digress. La Cabaña's entraña al punto is the kind of meal I'll remember fondly years from now--just as I've salivated over memories of my dinner at La Brigada. Located walking distance from Plaza de Santa Ana, we got there at 9PM, which we thought was late enough. Dinner doesn't usually start until 11PM in Madrid, so bring the TUMS. By 10PM the restaurant was completely full (on a weekday), so reservations are recommended. It's so rare to get a steak so perfectly executed that it requires no salt, sauce, bread or fixings. Argentine steak is typically served at a perfect pink medium (al punto) with a crispy crust and mega moist middle. Our steaks were served on a communal platter that arrived sizzling and could have easily served 3-4. I said could have. We had no problems devouring it--every bite coupled with a head shake and close of the eyes to soak in the experience. read more

BEST STEAK I'VE EVER HAD. I usually get well-done steaks, BUT this place changed me to a medium, to medium-rare, type of person. Their steak cuts are perfect. The texture and taste of the different cuts really make a difference. This was the perfect date spot. I highly suggest making a reservation at least two days ahead of time by sending them an e-mail (details listed on their website). I believe this is the only way you can get seated as I saw a couple of people getting turned away, but I am not sure. Regardless, do the work and make a reservation! It is extremely worth it. If it's your first time, you definitely need to give their Rib Eye and Fillet Mignon a try. Bring a date, and share half of each! You just can't expect any better situation.
