So funny enough, on our trip to Porto, now roughly 6 months ago, which I'm *still* clearing all my review drafts of (though after this, there will be one left, lol) - I did have this specific location on my list. I also had the place next door to this place on my list, but when we got there, the line to get in was basically out the door and around the corner, so I crossed them off and went here, leaving an opening for us to go somewhere else. Then the next morning, I discovered, Casa Guedes had just recently opened a second location in Vila Nova de Gaia, down the street from where we were staying, with the same name and menu and prices and everything, so I was there for dinner the next day too. Having now been to both, I can say the quality of the food was of pretty similar quality at both locations, so from here on, the rest of this review is going to be of food I had at either location. Great service at both, too, though their offshoot, at least at the time, was much less busy than this location, but the service was great anyway, regardless of them being busy. Between the two locations, and between two people sharing, we tried: A green soup that was, as I wrote in my notes, "omg". Croquettes that were also, again from my notes from January, "omg". A pernil with cheese sandwich I also just wrote down "omg" to, lol. A francesinha that was a *bit* understated compared to the one I'd had the previous day, but had, I wrote down, "excellent sauce". (I also wrote down that dipping the pernil with cheese sandwich *into* the sauce from the francesinha equaled, quote myself, "super omg".) A pork rissol with onion and port that I called "great but not amazing" (i.e. compared to everything else.) A sandwich with "soft cow cheese" (so... brie) and arugula that I wrote down as "excellent and a half" :D. And of course, being me, a note that, on request, they also had, at least as of January, great hot pepper oil (always a huge bonus.) Also had a solid pork spritz, and of course, port by itself (when in Rome, or in this case, Port), as well as a beer, cause the beer was super cheap. Just wish Superbock were a better beer (I also wrote that in my notes, specifically.) Sort of funny that their *cocktail* cocktails were fairly expensive, but that didn't matter, since their port prices, including port cocktails, i.e. spritzes, were very reasonably priced. Would definitely come back here if I were back in Porto, which I wish I were right now, lol. read more

I really wanted to love this place and parts of the experience almost got me there. The sandwich (#17 with pork) was genuinely delicious, and the sangria? Absolutely refreshing and well worth it. Seating was a bit of a challenge since there was no space inside, but we made it work outside and thankfully, the heaters kept us warm. So far, so good. Unfortunately, the service completely changed the tone of our visit. The woman taking our order was not just unfriendly. She was outright disrespectful! When my friend misplaced her ticket (we still had the number and were being cooperative), she asked politely if it would be okay. Instead of responding with basic courtesy, the employee made a scene and said in Spanish, "para la próxima guarda tu puto ticket." What she didn't realize is that we also speak Spanish. There was absolutely no reason for that level of hostility over such a minor situation. It turned what should have been a simple, enjoyable meal into an uncomfortable experience. We came here just to enjoy good food and while the food delivered, the service left a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons. I truly hope no one else has to experience that kind of treatment. read more

Prices are fair, portions are big, and you actually feel like you got what you paid for. Vibe: Clean, efficient, and easy to get a seat. Not trying to be charming, just works. So far, the best meal we've had in Porto! The Francesinhas Gueda was beautifully presented and delicious! Slight spice, tender roasted pork, creamy cheese made for a delicious lunch. Service was spot on and they accommodated our group of 13 on the rooftop. A very pleasant dining experience! Oh and a tender flavorful steak is hard to come by in Porto (possibly Portugal in general?), but Casa Guedes delivered on that too. read more

This place was touristy but the food was so delicious. We got to try all of Porto's local specialties. My favorite were their sandwiches. The Permil con Quejo de Ovelho e Cebola Carmelizada em Vinho do Porto was phenomenal. Homemade crunchy bread with the juiciest sliest of pork leg, local aromatic cheese, and sweet boozy caramelized onions. The Chourico Assado had a nice char on it from the fire and had a cold cut sausage texture. The Francesinha was decadent with layers of meats and a wine forward tomato sauce. Everything was great and I'm happy it was open on Sunday when a lot of the other local restaurants were closed. read more

Had to stop by to try the francesinha as recommended by social media! We were able to sit on the rooftop on a beautiful September day and enjoy the weather and views. The servers were kind and responsive. The menu is quite expansive with multiple pages of options for everyone. We ended up on the rooftop area, ordered the pork rinds as a starter, two versions of the francesinha, and two other sandwiches as well as two orders of fries. Everything was cold. It's a busy place and clearly food is prepped and sitting around. I'm not going to judge the sandwich by this place and hope to try it someplace else before leaving. Wonderful restaurant had dinner here one night and really enjoyed the food. The company and the service. A free Wi-Fi is also a plus. I ordered a pasta with tomato sauce and basil. I was really craving pasta at the time and it was very filling. It was cooked well and the pasta was chewy. Also got a glass of white wine, which was crisp and refreshing. What is there a table of shirt, a Keylime pie and a chocolate cheesecake, both of which were delicious and filling. The service was fantastic here. Visited 6/11/24. Yum! Highly highly recommend Casa Guedes-one of my favorite restaurants we ate at in Portugal. Even more fun is the rooftop seating where they have fun music and rotating tapas. We decided to go with 8 & 14. #8 Pernil com Queijo de Ovelha - great if you're looking for a meat & potatoes type of sandwich. #14 Chef Guedes - similar to #8 bc of the roasted pork, except w Brie cheese, arugula, and caramelized onions in port wine. I can eat it! The roasted Park and black pork sandwich is my personal favorite, slowwww roasted and flavorful indeed on the best bread with cow cheese and rocket. Yum! Fries for the table and coke zeros. Sure there's other food here but these are the best! We've been to three casa Guedes and they are consistent! During a visit to Porto in November I kinda googled for some "must-trys" and this place was mentioned several times. There was no wait when we went, possibly due to the off season (Oct-Nov). Lower level was empty because everyone was on the rooftop. I could tell they probably get super busy during high season because the workers had earpieces to communicate~ Anyway, made it to the rooftop. View was nice. Got seated on a barstool with a wobbly table in between some other parties. Staff were reasonably friendly~and fast. We ordered the francesinha and a lemonade to share. The lemonade is exactly that. Lemon juice + water so if you're used to the sweet ones, be warned. The francesinha is basically layers of bread with meat drenched in this sweetish spicy sauce. It reminded me of an egg benedict for some reason~its apparently a famous Portuguese sandwich~just didn't float my boat~a bit too "bready" and hearty for me. Its great to share. I would legitimately eat here everyday. The Picanha a Brasileira is very delicious and for 23 euros it's hard to beat. The meat is tender and full of flavor, accompanied by the farofa and rice it makes a dish spectacular! That reminds me we need more dishes with farofa back in the states! The prices were reasonable, and the food was excellent! Tapas are bigger here than in the States. They could easily be the main entrees. We ordered: 4*Bolinho Bacalhau：it's like fish samosa, made from a mixture of potatoes, bacalhau (codfish), eggs, parsley, onion. In a city with perhaps the world's best sandwiches, Casa Guedes might be in contention for the best in the city. Melt in your mouth roast pork on fresh baked rolls? I'll have 20 please...and they have variety to choose from. I went with the Da Casa (roast pork with soft sheep's milk cheese topped with caramelized onions in port wine) and the caldo verde soup. Stopped in for a semi late lunch on a Monday at around 2 pm. Maybe that's the normal lunch hour around here because there were a good amount of people still dining/coming in around that time. I randomly found this spot because I saw it on Google Maps and it was right by the hotel we were staying at. It had great reviews so we decided to come check it out. We sat at the rooftop, which is kind of enclosed but luckily it wasn't too cold anyway. It had a nice chill vibe. For drinks, I had the green wine. I wasn't really sure what that was but decided to try it. It's kind of like a white wine, which I don't even normally like. But this green wine was very good. It was light, crisp, and refreshing. Hubby had come kind of spicy chili cocktail, which was interesting because it had a kick to it. He enjoyed it. Their most popular sandwich seems to be the pernil with sheep's head cheese and I can see why. The 4 stars here are really just for this sandwich and the drinks. The pork is tender and the cheese is perfectly melty. It's also the perfect sized sandwich if you're not that hungry and don't want something massive, but want more than just a little snack. You definitely need to eat this fresh while you're there though. We got one to go on a separate day to bring back to the hotel and the meat was a little dried out, and the bread was soggy. The cheese was still good though. Hubby had the Guedes Francesinha (house bread, roasted pork, egg, mortadella, chorizo, fresh sausage, ham, gouda cheese, and special sauce). This was our first time trying a francesinha. Looking at photos online, we already knew it would be too heavy, and it was. I also don't like my sandwiches covered in sauce because I hate soggy bread. But still, we wanted to try one since we were just visiting Portugal. This came with a pretty big plate of fries. We almost ordered a side of aioli to go with the fries but our waiter suggested against it because the francesinha already comes with a bunch of sauce and it would be too heavy. Glad we listened to him. The fries were kind of soggy, matching the theme of the heavy sandwich. Overall, I would say stick to the simple dishes (like the roasted pork and sheep's cheese) and maybe a few tapas and drinks and you'll have a great experience. read more
