Great wine!

I knew this was going to be a great place just walking in the door, and the great ambiance of it. Its Porto all the way! We had an amazing waiter and sommelier, who actually told us what not not to try as well as what to try. We all got the special menus, with olives and bread, the green broth and bacalhau - all outstanding! The cod melted in my mouth! The cabbage and potatoes were perfectly cooked, everything was perfect, and we spent a perfect couple if hours here! The orange and almond cakes were great as well. The almond cake was different (moister) from the ones Ive had in Spain. This was an outstanding and memorable meal!

We felt a bit peckish while walking around Porto and stumbled upon this beautiful restaurant. We ordered: Shrimp, Bread and Olives, Clams, and some wine. Probably the best shrimp dish I have ever had. Not sure what was in it, and as you can see, I was more than halfway through by the time I took the picture.

Holy cow, the pictures and descriptions do NOT do this place full justice. If you want great food and even greater service, definitely go here for dinner. My wife and I went here on a Sunday night after taking the train up from Lisbon. We asked the young woman at the NH Collection Batalha front desk for restaurant recommendations nearby and this was first on her list. We had no reservations but were seated immediately. After perusing the large menu we decided to get the price fixe menu - soup, main course and dessert. The soup was the caldo verde, which we'd never had, and was delicious!! Shortly after that our steaks arrived table side and this is where the magic started. They had a small table set next to our main table and here they assembled the food on each plate - steak, mushrooms in demi glacé sauce, potatoes and sautéed vegetables. It was like watching a magician practice his art. The steaks were very tender, albeit a tad undercooked. The garlic olive sauce made everything super yummy. After we polished off the main course we were offered a variety of dessert options from a dessert cart on wheels. My wife got the baked apple, fresh out of the oven, with a scoop of ice cream. I got a slice of almond tart with a bit of whipped cream on the side. Both desserts were scrumptious-and tasted even better with our espressos. We highly recommend this place.

My hands down to this 80 some years old establishment . They were serving all traditional Portuguese dishes, and plating right in front of guests. To start we were recommended with a very special fine port in which we were so impressed. Another impressive dish was the octopus salad, the freshest I have ever experienced! The rest of main courses, the grilled veal center cut, and grilled kid goat were all marvelous. Also I would like to mention due to this is the traditional family style, all individual portions were generously given, enough for 2 or 3 servings! The rest of the evening was pleasantly spent with liquor, coffee, almond tart, and people watching. Highly recommend Restaurant Escondidinho with its hospitality and prestige's fine china-wears.

So so good!! We went in with no reservation and were seated happily and right away. I would still recommend that you do make a reservation though to be sure you can get in when you want. The food was really delicious! The servings are quite large. The servers were great as well, very responsive, warm and friendly. I would highly recommend this if you are in Porto.

Beautiful table setting!

Authentic food experience in Porto. The dishes were expertly prepared, showcasing traditional techniques and local fresh ingredients. The service was warm and very professional. If you want to eat where the locals go enjoy a wonderful meal, find this hidden gem- 'escondidinho'!!! Treat yourself! And don't forget dessert - cherries on ice chips!!

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel and wow, it did not disappoint. The food was amazing along with a great staff.

Goddamn son! Louis R hella loves this ornate resto in the heart of Porto. The vino Verde was clutch. The waiter was affable and quick with the drinks and eats. The tripe, steak, shrimp, octopus were fuckin deeelish. I wish Portuguese food in the USA tastes close to the food in this spot. Alas, it does not. It definitely does not. You gotta be like Louis R and come here to get the good stuff. Be like me, stop being local and get across the pond to Portugal.

My husband and I dined here Thursday night for dinner. This restaurant was recommended us by our hotel. We shared the seafood cataplana, which is recommended for two people. There was more than enough, that it could probably be split between three or even four people. The food was delicious and the service was great. We were offered soft bread to dip into the sauce of the cataplana. The restaurant has their own plates and cups with the restaurant's name on every item. I noticed on the menu that they are also available for sale, as a souvenir.

We read very favorable reviews of this restaurant, it was clearly a local favorite and we could…read morewalk to it from where we stayed on vacation. The focus here is on rotisserie chicken; they have other items but they're not the main event. It's very big inside, 2 stories and even early it's pretty busy. The chicken is well seasoned and very juicy; enough so that you know why it's So popular. Sides I can barely remember , but everything else was good- it's just that you will Always remember that chicken! Other than that, my only other clear memory of that dinner is that it was very reasonably priced. If I were in the area again, I'd return in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.

As I came in on my own I opted for the one open stool at the counter. The restaurant was busy on a Monday early evening, about 5:30-6:00 pm-ish, with what felt like mostly locals. They have a regular menu, a daily menu printed on the counter top, and they also do Take-Away. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.

We ordered a few tapas to share: croquets de alheira and croquets de codfish. Both were so good! We loved it. The star of the show though was the pork neck tacos! They were so delicious! So much flavor and perfect. I got the lemonade and it was just okay. Nothing special. Overall, would 100% recommend this place! Definitely recommend making a reservation, I found it impressive that the hostess's reservation system was essentially a notebook and pen in this digital age. We did not see much of our waiter, since the restaurant was extremely busy and filled up with diners. Standouts: 1. Razor clams - I'll always get these if I see it on the menu. Cooked in this incredible garlic sauce. 2. Fish and seafood cataplana - delicious, tomato-forward seafood stew; I liked the version that we had the night before more which came with rice and was more filling. But this was basically a never-ending bowl of fish, clams, mussels, and shrimp. Add to that the fact that the restaurant like most in Porto did not have A/C and I emerged feeling like I had been sitting in a sauna. Skipped dessert; I had my eye on the Weeel! froyo truck parked outside. One more nit - the metal chairs are not comfortable at all for sitting a long time in.

So this place showed up on a bunch of lists of places to go in Porto, and for good reason - but I…read morewas having trouble finding the hours, so I figured I'd just get there around noon once I was in Porto, and ask. Around noon, someone did show up briefly to post a sign out front saying they were going to be opening at 12:45 that day (I asked out of curiosity; sounds like it's *often* 12:30, but it's really mostly a "they'll open when they want to" kind of place.) I knew it'd be the sort of place that would fill up immediately, so I got back at 12:30. At least that day, it turns out they still had 1 table left after they sat everyone there before they opened - that last table got claimed at 1, 15 minutes later. It's not a large space, and word is out for good reason. Given it's not a large space, it was also easy for them to have excellent service, which they did. You could tell they were all passionate about the place, and again, for good reason - it was great. Definitely one of the best meals we ate on that trip. Between the two of us, we tried: Complimentary bread and olive oil. One OMG fantastic, wonderful fish soup. The sort of soup you'd want to eat every day if you could. Croquettes that were pretty good. Enjoyable enough, perfectly crispy, a little too salty. Not nearly as memorable as everything else. The seafood rice stew for 2 - a description I always question ("for 2"), but true in this case. It was quite large - and great. Excellent shrimp, which I'm picky about. I'm even pickier about shellfish (clams, mussels, etc). I was expecting to give my wife most of them, but I did *not* do that. They really know how to get and cook the best seafood here. The rice at the top of the stew wasn't anything particular to mention - filling, though, and warming for the drizzly day it'd been that morning. The rice at the *bottom* of the stew, that'd been slowly cooking in hot stew the whole time, was *very good*. :D Wine-wise, they have like a hundred bottles of wine by the whole bottom, some very expensive, some *surprisingly* reasonably priced, but we also didn't need a whole bottle of wine with lunch - by the glass, they just had one red and one white house wine (also solidly priced, though, for a place like this, 6 euros (Be way more than that in the US. I had the red with the stew - solid.) Also a handful of solid-looking ports by the glass, one of which I had with dessert, a reserva tawny for 6.50 euros. After eating the stew, my wife tapped out. I was also pretty full, but I'd spent a lot of effort getting here and I was *gonna* have dessert, darn it. Had what was basically just a whole roasted stewed apple, cooked down until it turned to pudding. Super good. Went really well with a reserva tawny port. This place was great.

Luckily for us the restaurant was only half full so there was no need to wait (weekday at 3pm). Odd hours for popular restaurants worked out the best for us on this trip. Inside there were just 8 tables so I can see why this place usually sees long lines outside. It was quite cozy. Menu was straightforward with appetizers, seafood and from the country (aka meat). The octopus rice was so good. The strips of sliced octopus were very tender and the flavors of this dish were delicious. It was comforting on that cold and rainy afternoon. The salt crusted seabass selection was delivered the with flare all covered in flames. Our server ignored the flames and proceeded to crack open the salt crust, fillet and debone the fish. Full service! The fish was meaty and perfectly cooked. The side of potatoes and broccoli was addicting and I normally don't eat a lot of potatoes. We skipped dessert but the menu was tempting. Besides the fish service it would've been nice to have a bit more proactive attention from our server. When we requested our check, she pointed out that out that tipping was not included and waited until we completed the transaction. Would return for the food next time in Porto.

It's the best cooked octopus I've tried in Portugal, super tender and a nice char. A little on the expensive side, but great flavor. I wish it had more bell peppers on the side to add some sweetness. The burrata had a great creamy gazpacho sauce with fresh sun-dried tomatoes. And the veal had a nice tender wine flavor. The dessert was amazing, a trompe l'oiel lemon with lemon sorbet and a sweet cookie crumble. The lemon had a light chocolate crust and was filled with cream and lemon curd. And there were a series of small, minor issues that detracted from the experience. Bread course came warm, with a caramelized onion butter and some spicy bell pepper mayo that was ridiculously divine. This was my favorite course. Got the Cyber Punk tuna sashimi. Presentation was amazing. The tuna itself paired with the ponzu sauce was quite good. There were other elements like trout roe and crispy chicken skin, but the portions were sparse and I felt like the sauce drowned out their contribution a bit. Still a great dish though. Would order again. My main dish was the Vitela (braised veal). While the menu ostensibly presents these items for two to share, they can make half-portions of certain items, of which the Vitela was one. The meat was wonderfully tender. Flavor was had a slight tinge of bitterness and saltiness that didn't quite agree with me. Good dish overall. Service was kind and engaging. Possibly a bit too fussy over me for my American sensibilities, but they were very nice. The server knowledgeable about wine pairings and helped me pick out some for the courses I ordered. A couple of very minor issues here and there, like spilling some wine when pouring the glass, stuff like that. Also, the server shook my hand coming and going. Nice gesture but all I could think of was germs. Bathroom: Single-occupancy, upscale and nice. Toilet seat wouldn't stay up though. All in all, at decent restaurant but like I said, I had a bunch of small complaints that just added up, and it says a lot that my favorite course was the bread course. I would not repeat personally, but I think it might be worth a try for those that really love what's on the menu.
