While visiting Chicago for a hockey tournament, we found this hidden gem that should be a must-visit for anyone in the area. We simply liked this place so much that we went twice in a row. The tasty food is just one aspect of what makes it special. The owners also show genuine kindness and care towards each customer, which adds to the overall positive experience. Still one of my favorite Mexican places! The woman who works here/owns this restaurant is amazing. Nothing stops her from coming to work. This place is her life and you can tell how much she cares. Truly a wonderful woman. The food is fantastic. I still love the chicken chimichanga, but I've branched out and tried the chicken enchiladas and the shrimp cocktail. The chicken enchiladas are fantastic. They are packed with tons of chicken! Truly, they do not skimp. If you look at the photo I posted you can see how thick they are. The shrimp cocktail is large! A full meal portion! It has tons of shrimp and great flavor. This is in my top 3 for places to get a shrimp cocktail: the other two are specifically seafood restaurants though. The fried ice cream was good. The ice cream itself was delicious- it didn't have icicles like so many do. I think she coated it in cereal flakes to give it a crunch, but didn't actually deep fry the ice cream ball. Regardless, it had the crunch and awesome flavor and then a homemade strawberry sauce that I absolutely love. She uses the same sauce in her Margheritas. ;) read more

Wonderful stop for Mexican food. The owners are just as wonderful. So nice! My wife and I have loved everything we've ordered. It's only the two of them so please be patient as everything is made to order. You won't be disappointed. A couple recommendations include the chili relleno plate & burrito, tacos, and the San Juan Plate is as good as it gets, so good! I'll order everything again. I'll update this review as we go. Update: Well, we can't help ourselves this place is so so good. I'm Mexican and very picky when it comes to our food. Casa San Juan continues to amaze us. We brought our daughter last week, this week we brought our son. Add the tortas and enchiladas to the list of our favorite dishes. If you love Mexican food as much as I do, you have to visit this wonderful place. It is a small, family restaurant run by a warm and friendly staff. And by staff I mean usually two people, sometimes three. It is just about the best Mexican food I've had anywhere including Mexico. In summary: 1. Our first time trying this restaurant and I'm sorry we didn't try it sooner. My daughter just catered for a party which is why we decided to go there. It was very clean and welcoming with beautiful decor. The margaritas were the best we've ever had. On to the food.... I had the shredded chicken taco and it was delicious. My Fiance had the flautas and loved them. Of course we filled up on the chips salsa and guacamole to start. Dania waited on us and she was really sweet and friendly. Casa San Juan is a small, neighborhood taqueria that seats maybe 30 people and has probably 3-5 employees. I can honestly tell you that 3 of these are a husband, wife and their daughter. The daughter was working the front of the house. The father was cooking in the kitchen and the mother bounced between the front, the kitchen and the small bar. Mom also functions as the barkeep, and they have a nice selection traditional Mexican cocktails (I had a Cantarito which is served in a clay cup - delicious), as well as Mexican and domestic beers. The mother and daughter were some of the friendliest and most genuine folks we've run across in a while. My wife commented that their personalities alone would probably warrant a return visit. We were promptly seated and served some fresh chips and salsa. They gave us hot and mild salsa, and l didn't particularly care for either by themselves - the hot was very peppery and bitter and the mild was really, really sweet. They were much better, IMO, when combined. For our meals the wife ordered chicken enchiladas in green sauce (she LOVES a good salsa verde) and I ordered the combination fajitas. Here's where it gets a little weird. Let me also say that the wife and I LOVE Mexican food. We already eat out a lot, and I would guess that over 50% of our dining experiences take place at Mexican restaurants. We're not Hispanic, but we have definitely eaten more authentic Mexican food than 90% the average "gringos". I digress....... The food a Casa San Juan was good. The chicken enchiladas in green sauce were good, but they were just unlike any chicken enchiladas my wife had had before.. not that they were bad, but just unexpected. I guess we mistakenly thought that "green sauce" meant a type of tomatillo-based salsa verde, and this was not that... that being written, again, it wasn't bad. My combination fajitas were also good, but a bit salty for me. I enjoy some spice, and I love spicy food, and these fajitas were seasoned nicely, but they were saltier than I prefer. By the time we left at 7-ish in the evening, the place had filled up, and pretty much all the tables in the small restaurant were taken. You could tell by the surrounding conversations that almost all these patrons were regulars, and that's pretty cool. So, in short, Casa San Juan is a great spot for a lot of people and the reasons are evident. The service is fantastic. The food is good. The place is lively and clean... it's just not our "jam" necessarily. As they say.. "different strokes...." read more

This is a nice little gem. Found this place while in town on Yelp and decided to give them a try. If you're looking for more traditional Mexican this is your spot. If you're looking for the traditional texmex this may not meet your needs. They have a lot of things you'd find at any other Mexican place but even better here. I got the chimichanga which is tremendously huge. Also tried the chorizo con casa which is chorizo sausage with melted cheese and served with tortillas. The food was wonderful and fairly priced. Steak isn't dry or fatty, chicken is juicy and not just dark meat, pork is flavorful being both sweet & savory, and the chorizo is just delicious. My husband and I have been wanting to come here based on reviews we've read. So glad we finally did because it did not disappoint. We were greeted right away by the woman who owns the restaurant along with her husband. She was friendly, humorous, and really took that extra step to make us enjoy our experience. The salsa and chips we were given were very good. The salsa was served warm and it really made the flavors pop. We started with the queso fundido with chorizo as our appetizer and it was the best we've ever had. It wasn't just mostly cheese that typically seizes up after it sits for a few minutes. It also wasn't a pool of grease. It was mostly chorizo and it was very good chorizo. The flour tortillas were absolutely delicious, too! My husband ordered steak tacos and I ordered chicken. My chicken was extremely juicy and full of flavor. It's amazing how many "authentic" places serve dry, bland chicken. Thankfully, that isn't the case here. I tried the steak my husband had and it too was very good. It practically melted in my mouth. We each had a margarita while dining and I'm happy to say we were not disappointed there, either. Great flavor, authentic, and several quality tequilas to choose from. While we loved the food, we thoroughly enjoyed our special margaritas. The restaurant was very clean, as were the restrooms. I'd like to add that it's a smaller place without a lot of staff. It wasn't crowded when we were there, so our needs were met fairly quickly. If there are more diners present when you visit, just be patient. The homemade, authentic food and attention to detail is well worth it. We've all been to Taco stands where it appears they chuck your order in the container from 10 ft away. Steak refried rice taco mess with instructions to put it in the blender. The best authentic Mexican food you will find in the southwest burbs. I have tired a lot places and Casa San Juan always brings me back. The owners are super friendly and accommodating. I have had Lomo en chile de arbol, damn that was good! I have also had their tacos, full of flavor, I have also had their chicken enchiladas in chile de arbol (red) I wanted more they are that tasty!
