Yo this spot is bougie af but in a good way. You can dress somewhat nice in here. Honestly we rolled up in Disneyland day attire. Like shorts, shirt, dad hat backwards, with a baby car seat and we were welcomed in with open arms *cue Journey*. The tiacolo and tetela were good. The smoked pig and pork belly were delicious too. Got couple glasses of white to wash it down. We had homeboy(server) literally describe everything to us and he was super friendly and chill about it. Honestly this spot is a cool date night spot but also could be a good family outing. As a tourist, I'm glad to have spent the extra dime here because gyyyaaawdamn this part of New York lacks flavor. You would think closer to the farms, would be a bit better, but maybe just the areas we visited were ehh. This was the only spot in Leeds we checked out cuz we were more congregated around Saugerties. Idk the area just tryna spell the context. This is really a 4.5 Casa Susanna is located in a cabin-like hotel that is surrounded by quite a few cabins, so it's a casual space. It has low ceilings and feels nice and comfortable. Since it was a Sunday, it was brunch time. I ordered the chilaquiles which had tender, flavorful pork/barbacoa. All components were done well, from the crisp chips to the salsa verde. I would have preferred my eggs a bit more runny, but it didn't detract from all the wonderful flavors. I also ordered the concha with cacao and it was softer than any concha I've ever had - which was great. The cacao is subtle but it was definitely there. Service was friendly and timely. I'm definitely a fan and I'd happily stop by again to try more items. read more

Since they are already finalists, according to James Beard, I'll spend this review explaining more why I only gave it three stars. The food in general was well prepared, delicious and certainly had a sophisticated knowledge of spicing in flavoring. But it's more the minor details that stops an experience from being a really wonderful one. So here are some details, you may think I'm crazy or you may relate. The first was coffee: they didn't have decaf and they don't have half-and-half. I'm not going to speculate why, but for quite a few of us decaf is a true pleasure and it'd be nice to have that available. To the waitresses credit she offered to bring me milk and cream, so I could make my own half-and-half? That was a first! The second was the hot chocolate: the actual hot chocolate was quite delicious, Mexican style with some cinnamon. But it was topped with a mountain of whipped cream and some small crunchy pieces. I think it's pretty standard nowadays that when you're going to top a drink like that the staff tends to ask whether you like whipped cream or not. I really dislike whipped cream so had to scoop all that stuff off. The next one was just simply funny: when you're ordering a side order of eggs, one option they list on the menu is a sunny side up egg, one of the other options is to have a "fried egg". I asked the waitress what exactly a fried egg was, she didn't know. She asked the chef, and apparently they didn't know either. So I ordered it over easy, hoping that was doable, but I just got a sunny side up egg instead. And lastly, was the ambience: the space is quite nice and comfortable, but if you're sitting in the outer ring near the windows and it's a very cold winter day (which it was when we ate) expect to be cold in there. They kindly offered to hang our coats, but I had to keep mine on the whole time. Maybe if the insulation and heating system is unable to keep up, you bring in a couple space heaters for the day? read more

Truly transcendent mexican food with a focus on innovation and local flair driven by Hudson valley ingredients. The space is beautiful, ingredients are all fresh and outstanding, and there's clearly a love for the spot from everyone working at Casa Susanna. The cocktail menu is unique and fun. Yes you could get a margarita, but everything on the menu is so interesting from Raicilla drinks to Carajillos, there's so much to love. The space feels like a film set and you need to make sure you get a reservation so you can enjoy rather than sitting outside or at the bar. Surprisingly reservations were harder to come by than expected the weekend I was there. The dishes are all great, with the Duck being my standout dish, just perfectly cooked and really exemplifying the beauty of Hudson Valley + Mexican cuisine. The tetela was also a real standout despite the simplicity of the dish. It leaned into good mexican food, withou ttrying to do too much. Each and every cocktail was fun and good! If you want to have delicious Mexican food with local Hudson ingredients while feeling like you're on a Wes Anderson film set, Casa Susanna is your place. The vegetable dishes really were the unexpected standout stars: beautiful little gem lettuce with an herby epazote green goddess dressing and sprinkled with a dusting of cotija cheese, sope with red and green strawberries, radishes and sunflower mole with a spicy kick, and heirloom blue corn masa with stinging nettles and mushrooms. We also got the pork belly with fermented mole negro, a rich sauce packed with flavor, and the mackerel, which was light and balanced-- delicious in its own right but the accompanying chintextl caulilini or "sweet stem cauliflower" stole the show with its fresh crunchiness. (I would happily eat all vegetables here.) We liked it so much we came back for brunch to enjoy crispy quesadillas envelopes sealing in the potatoes and the savory blood sausage tamal-- both with sunny side eggs on top. The servers could not be any nicer and made the experience both relaxed with a touch of fine dining. The servers for dinner and brunch were thoughtful, attentive, professional and friendly. They offered to change dishes between courses at dinner and also recommended dishes with a lot specificity and answered questions about how certain details of each dish were made (like the strawberries on the sope were dehydrated first and then soaked to establish a more potent flavor). It's on site of Camptown, which has lodging so some of the diners were staying there. The booths were comfortable and windows wide. Definitely worth a trip and stopover. The meal ended with a postcard showing what this location used to look like, a nostalgic nod to its past. read more

For those of you wanting a completely different Mexican dining experience, definitely do not miss out on this place. There is a reason the chef is a James Beard finalist 3 years in a row. This is fine dining mexican in casual but trendy digs - apres ski trendy rustic lodging vibes. The restaurant is in a converted motel turned boutique lodging and dining. The food is INSANELY good, every dish was complex in flavor and texture. Even the asian pear app, so simple - just asian pear, gochujang, and lemon juice - I could not stop myself from eating the whole thing even though I knew a lot more food was coming. The homemade tamal and the pork belly was incredible, the meat had a nice sear but was also pull apart tender. The mole and crema were perfect additions and it is one of the most comforting (yet sophisticated) dishes I have had in quite some time. The dessert? Outstanding! Possibly the best Mexican cuisine I've ever had in the US and on par with the most innovative and upscale restaurants in Mexico City. I never expected to find Mexican food of this quality in upstate New York a short distance off the 87, and even the best I've had in Manhattan pales in comparison. This is definitely worth the trip. Chef Efren Hernandez is an artisan and magician - how he gets some of these rare authentic ingredients in this remote location is a miracle. Getting a reservation was a chore only a few days in advance, but I managed to get one when a table in the lobby opened up at the last minute. The lobby table was small for three people, but we managed. I started with the Carajillo cocktail made with reposado tequila, orange liquer, Licor 43 and cold brew. The coffee flavor dominated, balanced by the sweet ingredients that made it taste reminicent of Kahlua but lighter and less cloying. Also later enjoyed a glass of orange wine that paired very well with the main courses. The little gem ensalada with cotija, radish, and epazote green goddess dressing was crisp and refreshing. That came the same time as the scallop aguachile, which was also a nice, cool entry into the meal after a hor July day. The sauce was so good I drank it directly from the bowl - screw the manners (no one was watching anyway)! Next came the biggest hit for my family and me - the squash blossom tetela. The squash blosson was pressed on the outside of the blue corn masa with melted cheese and beans inside, sitting on a bed of fragrant salsa verde with only a slight touch of heat. This is what a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme wants to be when it grows up and gets a real job. Next time we go we'll probably each order one instead of sharing. Fortunately the basket of fresh tortillas we ordered arrived in time for us to use them to soak up the glorious salsa verde. Fortunately we still had some tortillas left when the chayote/watercress ensalada sitting on a base of a hearty chunky chipotle and peanut sauce arrived. The chipotle sauce had notable heat but the flavor was vibrant and smoky. The chayote helped offset the heat. I was really looking forward to the smoked goat birria I read about in a review that inspired me to seek out this place, but the smoked lamb barbacoa replaced it on the menu. No worries - this was an awesome substitution. The lamb was smoked in a manner that was neither subtle nor heavy handed. I could taste the gamey lamb flavor and smoke in equal measures. It came with four tortillas for making tacos, accompanied by a plate of radish, pickled jalapeno (nuclear heat), grilled onions, cilantro, lime, sardines (!), and an outstanding chipotle salsa rojo that I wish I could buy by the bucket. The tacos I assembled were on another level of flavor - who knew that smoked lamb and sardine could go together so well? I also had a taste of my wife's mackerel (delicious) and my daughter's duck. I would have been equally happy choosing either dish instead of the lamb. I noticed that the ingredients for a few dishes (mainly the duck and scallop aguachile) differed from those in the menu posted online, but it seemed that the changes reflected seasonal substitutions made to use certain items at their peak. We finished by sharing the coffee shoyu ice cream topped with delightfully light but rich whipped jocoque (a fernented milk that's like yogurt). While there were a few light Asian touches to some of the dishes, they were subtle instead of the occasional heavy handed culture clash of some fusion cuisine. The overall focus is on Mexican flavors. Everything was vibrant and fresh, with uncommon, unexpected flavors that are difficult to find north of the border. This was probably one of the greatest culinary surprises for me over the last decade or two, and it greatly revived my increasingly bored palate. I cannot wait for my next visit. read more

Came here for an early dinner on a Saturday night. We had a reservation and arrived early. They didn't let us come in but were told we could wait at one of the tables outside. They didn't make us feel welcome or even bring us water to drink outside while we were waiting, so the customer service initially seemed lacking . Once we were able to go in, everyone was nice and hospitable. The drinks were strong and delicious. The food was very interesting and flavorful. We had the rib eye, asian pear dish that is perfectly sweet with a dash of spice which I loved, bok choy, pork belly, endive salad, a dish with beans and cheese, and maybe a couple of other things. The bartender was extremely rude we had to wait 10 minutes just to get water. Later, when my friend said the food was too spicy and asked for a menu, the female bartender laughed with her colleague and mocked her, saying "It has habanero in it, how could she not know?" That's completely unprofessional. You cannot treat people based on how they're dressed if four people are sitting at the bar and each orders a different meal, saying "this is a bar" is not a valid excuse for serving the food however you want. I asked my colleague for a few places to eat in the are and Casa Suanna was about quick ride from where we were staying. if there was any place to eat at first in Hudson, I will promise you this is one of the finest restaurants you'll go to. We had a really great meal at Casa Susanna. The parking is right out front, but we did have to wait about five minutes for someone to leave as the parking lot is very small. The space was really unique and the service was very good. We got the beets with flying ants (yes ants!) and it was very good, but spicier than I expected. The masa with blood sausage was so unique and excellent! For the main meal we got mackerel which was amazing and the lamb tacos. The lamb tacos were flavorful, but probably the spiciest thing I've ever eaten and could barely eat two tacos worth. The menu did not indicate it would be spicy and it was build your own tacos, so wished the spice came not on the lamb but in a salsa or pepper on the side. Such an amazing find upstate. Really authentic and innovative food and outstanding service. We tried the following dishes Beets - really complex and innovative. Would def get this again. Tetela - very tasty albeit less complex but would order again as well. Beef Tartar - very good although sauce was a little different from usual steak tartare sauces (had a sweet pickled undertone to it) Sope- my husband liked it but I didn't care for it. It was difficult to eat at the base was a bit dry. Smoked Lamb Barbacoa - it was good although really nothing special. Essentially it was decomposed taco (a very solid and tasty taco). Although I have had better tacos for sure. Also at essentially 10$ a taco I found this dish overpriced and less exciting compared to other things we ordered. Brown butter tamal desert - this was a bit weird and honestly not great. Service was outstanding. Like upscale NYC restaurant good. The waiter was amazing at explaining the menu and making suggestions. I will say that the place was on a pricy side for a Mexican restaurant and dishes on smaller size. We shared 5 dishes and a desert and were not stuffed. However it was a really great experience and I'm excited to go bank and try more dishes. read more

This was a spontaneous stop for an early dinner, and we are so glad we came here. It was a snowy day, and the first thing we noticed was the cozy fireplace in the center of the restaurant. The ambiance was lovely, and the staff were welcoming and attentive. The restaurant is part of the restoration and re-envisioning of motel of the same period (Camptown Catskills). CONCEPT: Chef Efren Hernandez conceives and oversees the preparation of cuisine inspired by the Mexican state of Jalisco. Given the state's position along the western coastline, seafood dishes are popular, as well as hearty meat dishes that stem from northern and central parts of the state. Dishes shift seasonally, reflecting what is locally available from farmers, ranchers, and fishermen. LOCATION: Casa Susanna is located inside the main lodge of Camptown Catskills in rural (population 377) Leeds, New York and just off interstate 87. AMBIANCE: Reminiscent of a diner design, the restaurant has bench seating adjacent to wrap-around windows. However, here the design is elevated by the inclusion of the soothing sounds of Central American music, flowers displayed in clay vases on tabletops, and the warm glow of forest green metal pendant lights. FOOD & BEVERAGE: The weaving of the lodge's past with local craftwork extends to the service-ware. Dishes are served on clay plates, representing a variety of earthy colors. Beverages are poured into vintage or vintage-inspired glassware. As a result, the presentation of each course invited an aesthetic surprise. Matching these surprises were the appearance and taste of dishes and beverages themselves. Being unfamiliar with this cuisine and many of the ingredients described on the menu made selection challenging, but the server declared that there were no poor choices on the chef's menu. Yet another surprise was that at the conclusion of the evening we agreed -- hard to imagine to have experienced such skill and creativity in a small rural restaurant! As but one example, the triangular Tetela was composed of ground blue corn and had an iridescent imprint made by squash blossoms. Encased inside was a mixture of mild beans and cheese. The Tetela sat in a verdant pool of salsa in the center of a rust colored clay dish that was adorned with grooved rays along the border. SERVICE: Service was attentive, with just the right amount of spacing between courses. Spot on advice as to number of dishes to order. Did not feel rushed, and was kindly provided complementary dessert upon learning we were new customers. TIPS: Seating in the dining room is limited, but there is a patio and bar area as well. Brunch is offered on weekends between 10 AM and 2 PM. Chef Hernandez is responsible for another successful restaurant associated with the folks behind Camptown Catskills -- the Tavern in Hudson's Rivertown Lodge. Located just off NY Thruway Exit 21, Casa Susanna is a Mexican restaurant & bar which opened recently at Camp Town. I stopped off here for dinner recently and sat at the bar/lounge for prompt service. There is also a dining room with table seating. I was given food and drink menus to look at and a glass pitcher and glass of cold water. They make their own corn tortillas fresh in house ($6-$10) for the table. I did have to Google some of the menu offerings since this is not your typical or standard Mexican fare, higher end unique dishes served here. I eventually ordered the Whole Grilled Black Bass Al Pastor ($35 plus tax) with Caramelized Fennel, Guajillo Salsa, Fennel Sauerkraut. My food arrived to me in 15 minutes, which was a big whole grilled bass, sliced & spread out with skin, head and tail. I took my time to enjoy this dish, which I carefully deboned the flaky, soft and tender bass. The accompiments went well with the bass. I passed on the offers for fresh tortillas and dessert since I already ate sweets before stopping here for dinner. The dinner check was $37.80 with tax and before tip. Overall, a good dinner and good service at the bar. I would stop here again for the dining room atmosphere, but I would bring a date with me since the dining room had plenty of couples here enjoying a night out for dinner and drinks. read more

Read the reviews about this place; it's a winner. The food is wonderful. I went there for breakfast. I sampled both the tetela (heirloom blue corn, bayo bean, alpine cheese, salsa morita) and the chilachiles con conchinita (pulled pork shoulder, black bean, habanero onion, sunny-side-up egg) with a side of concha (brioche bun, cacao crumble) and a coffee. I was unfamiliar with either of the breakfast items but after having tried them, I want to be more familiar. The tetela was grilled on a flat top. This resulted in some crispy bits of tortilla dough yet it also remained soft and pliable. What you find stuffed inside the house-made tortilla is melted, gooey alpine cheese, earthy bayo beans and smoky salsa morita (made with chipotle). It's a wonderful combination. The softened tortilla chips in the chilachiles is better than bread to sop up all the goodness in the savory breakfast bowl. I don't know why but the crisp halo of egg white of the sunny side egg got to me. In my opinion, that single element added a lot to the dish; it added crisp texture to an otherwise "soft" entree. I chose to eat at the bar and Patrick was the bartender. He couldn't have been a better host. He's good at small talk, attentive to a dining customer's needs (more coffee please), and was kind enough to answer all of my questions about the menu. Casa Susanna is part of a larger establishment called Camptown which rents cabins and rooms. I didn't see the rest of the spaces but the restaurant has a "glam camp" look to it. It's curated, for sure, but retains a casual feel. There is no substitute for the sight, smell, and warmth of a fireplace in the middle of a restaurant. Lastly, the choice of equipment and tableware add to the ambiance and space. Technivorm coffee makers provide a good cup. The heft and simple elegance of the ceramic plates in combination with the modern silverware are nice "bougie" elements which provide the jewelry to adorn the space. Nice place. The tortillas were excellent, among the best I have ever had. we had roasted peptias to start, spicy and delicious, followed up with the roasted beets served 3 way which was excellent and has a bit of habanero, which could have easily been overdone but wasn't. Next we had yellow beans with cheese, very good. For the entire we had both the roasted duck w blueberries and mushrooms and the tile fish. both tasty. I had high expectations coming into my meal at Casa Susana. Rivertown Lodge has been one of my favorite restaurants in Hudson since it opened, and I had heard that Casa Susana was more of the same: an excellently curated menu with fresh ingredients and an understated yet aesthetically elevated interior design. Check and check. Casa Susana strikes the balance between sophisticated and down to earth, from the service to the drinks to the food to the overall vibe. Right off the highway, under 15 minutes from Hudson, Casa Susana is a worth a stop whether you're staying at Camptown or living nearby and looking for a superb dining experience. We came here at 8 on a Friday night. There's indoor and outdoor seating, and both were completely packed when we arrived. We sat in the main dining space, which is super cozy. Low ceilings and thin, long windows give the space an illusion that you're almost dining in a trailer/RV. The design is clean and simple, with banquets and lots of wood and natural elements. Even the silverware, flatware, and glassware are beautifully curated, with earthen plates, gold spoons, cream napkins, and some clay vases used as cocktail glasses. It's all done so well. We had to try cocktails to begin the night, as the cocktail menu, in its agave-forward glory, is not something you should be skipping. I'm sensitive to tequila but I'm oddly fine with mezcal, so I was a little worried about how I'd navigate the menu, but with great joy, I learned early in the evening that all drinks featuring tequila were conceived of such that mezcal could be easily swapped without throwing off the balance. So I was able to try everything I wanted, with a smokier twist. To start, I got the Elote Sour (jalapeño infused blanco tequila, nixta licor de elote, strawberry, fresh lime juice) with mezcal. Spicy, sweet and a little savory. I'm not sure I've ever had elote before so that was a nice touch. To finish, I got the Valenti Martini (scondessa prickly pear-orange blossom gin, jalapeño infused blanco tequila , mezcal, genepy, dry vermouth, celery bitter) with mezcal, which was easily one of the most creative martinis I've ever had. Smoky and impeccably balanced, with clean and herbal notes. I also tried my husband's second drink, which was the Mezcal Negroni (Draft) (mezcal, forthave red aperitivo, cocchi di torino sweet vermouth, ancho reyes). I love a mezcal negroni and this was no exception. The ancho reyes was a nice touch here, giving the drink a subtle kick. Food-wise, there are exciting options for every section of the menu, so it was impossible to deliberate. Ultimately, while we were wanting something from the Masa section, we ordered a main that included a tamale to attempt to kill two birds with one stone (technically it was only one bird -- duck -- that died for our enjoyment, oh well). We went with a veggie-heavy meal and we also tried to order things that seemed particularly unique. We had a nice variety and it was the perfect amount of food. Eats, below: Grilled Little Gem, Perilla, Masa Crisp, Coriander Dressing: A Your typical gem salad with a Mexican twist. I'm gluten free, so masa crisps instead of croutons was much appreciated and the texture was nice too. The salad was lightly dressed with a super flavorful dressing which tied it all together. Uni Tostada w/ Epazote Crema, Guajillo, Trout Roe: A+ This one is worth paying extra for. Super flavor bomb right here, delicious and umami-forward. The uni is brought in fresh each day and you can tell that everything is top quality. This dish is truly unique and truly excellent. Grilled Cactus Salad, Quelites, Smoked Queso Fresco: A- We got this for the novelty, though obviously it's not a novelty in Mexico. Not as exciting as the other veggie dishes we had but still solid. The cactus itself was tasty and paired nicely with all of the microgreens and edible flowers. Smoked Cauliflower, Sikil Pak, Salsa Seca: A+ This was truly divine, every element working perfect with one another. I could've eaten three orders of these. Sikil pak is this pepita-based dip, kind of like a ground hummus but with more crunch, that is something I'm going to need to try my hand at soon. Tamal Tonto (heirloom yellow corn), Duck Leg Confit, Fermented Mole Negro, Crema y Pickled Habanero Red Onions: A+ The grand finale, we got a little bit of everything here. The duck was crispy yet juicy, and the combo of the mole and crema was just magical. I know they do all of the vegetable pickling in house, and I would've loved a quadruple portion of those onions. I had a great time tonight with a pal. We started out with the radicchio salad with a bright satsuma dressing, raisins and smoked olives. Simple and refreshing. Followed this up with the Squash Blossom Tetela with Frijol Bayo, Alpine Cheese and Salsa Verde. This was decent. The star of the show was the tamale tonto, which came with THE MOST FABULOUS, succulent, and perfectly crisped shreds of duck confit, crema and pickled onions. I would come back for this. 10/10, no notes. The smoked goat birria was nice, but nothing could top the tamal. For dessert we split the chocolate tamal, which was a playful take on a dense chocolate pudding -- and instead of crumbled cotija there was a "crumble" of vanilla ice cream. I was not sure whether to award 4 or 5 stars. The food was delicious and unique in taste. The ingridients are healthy, organic, and carefully chosen. The service was perfect. The restaurant is beautiful, and ambience is memorable and romantic. The restaurant has high end cottages and a motel attached. The downside are small portions and high prices. When you pay a little and are still hungry, something does not seem right. read more

People are acting as if this place is a Michelin-worthy dining destination. We had a good meal, not a great one. Of the four dishes we tried only one of them was a stand out; the rest were just fine. I'm glad that someone is trying to bring authentic Mexican cuisine to the Hudson Valley, so we'll try it again. It's just kind of amusing how easily impressed people are they do. We had a very good recommendation from my brother who is a chef about this place. The atmosphere is so warm and inviting. The service is outstanding, waiter answered a ton of questions regarding the menu, restaurant and ingredients. He made some great suggestions. Amazing meal! Amazing drinks! Great addition to the Hudson valley area. We stayed in Athens, easy drive. Also close to Hudson and Saugerties. Standout is masa, in tamales and tortillas.
