This place was kid friendly (by European standards) but the squid, fried cod and coquettes were the best! The wait staff was super attentive. It certainly gets packed but if you are by the Alcázar, definitely stop by! It is opened during the 2-4 pm break since you are in the tourist area. They also have an amazing cake selection but we were way too full! The 1/2 portions are massive so choose carefully! We over ordered and didn't expect such generous portions for the price. Our original plan was to visit a popular tapas bar nearby, but it was way too hectic, so we decided to look for another option and ended up at Casa Tomate. We're glad we did. Yes, it's a touristy spot given its location, but we enjoyed both the food and the service. I didn't have high expectations for the service, but an older gentleman took great care of us. Despite his limited English (or, more accurately, our lack of fluent Spanish) he did his best to make us feel welcome. We ordered squid croquettes, shellfish salad, fried eggs with Iberian cured ham and fries, and anchovies. The Iberian ham was just okay, but dipping the fries in the egg yolk turned out to be surprisingly good (we only did it because there was no ketchup. I know). The squid croquettes were a bit odd. They weren't bad, but not really our thing. It reminded me that croquettes are best with potato or ham. The highlights were definitely the anchovies and the shellfish salad. The anchovies were packed with flavor without being overly fishy, and the shellfish salad was refreshing and delicious. I'm usually not a fan of shellfish, but I really enjoyed their take on it. The service was quick. Great - ox tail, salmon tartare. Good - shrimp with garlic and sangria. Bad - shrimp croquettes (gross), octopus (tough) , pork (dry). We have had about 8 meals in Spain by the time we got to this place and this was bottom 2 of us. If you pass this place...keep on walking. After you visit Seville cathedral, you will find this little gem when you walk up the street littered with tapas bars all the way to the end. The beer is cold and the food is great. I recommend the large size. The bartender cools the beer glass in ice water before pouring the beer. Nice! Nice decor but poor execution of many standard tapas. We got ham croquettes that were accompanied by French fries. The croquettes were small and flavorless. Pork sirloin with Whiskey sauce was tough and forgettable. We also had homemade spinach with chickpeas and finished with salmorejo - both were just Ok. Overall, a solid mediocre tapas bar. read more

I don't like to be the ugly tourist, so it is with some trepidation that I write this review. My partner, our Spanish friend, and I visited this establishment on our first night in Seville. There was nothing particularly different about it than any of the other dozen or so cafes/bars in the one block radius around us. The food was good. The prices fair. Except for the roll delivered to our table still in the plastic shrink wrap, there would've been absolutely no complaints. After we left, our friend told us the manager/owner was say "he hated tourists." Okay, get it. People coming to your country and expecting you to adapt to them would be annoying. But that was not us. Our friend was talking and guiding us through everything. Maybe the table of Americans next us??? Either way it does not matter. Look, you are a service industry business, at the heart of the tourist section of town. You don't like tourists? At least have the sense to not assume they don't understand what you are saying. read more

This restaurant is definitely somewhat of a tourist-trap! It is in the heart of Seville, the chances of you walking past it are extremely high. Good things: * The atmosphere: The atmosphere was amazing, there were photos of guitars on the walls, there were cool Lamps hanging around, but it wasn't enough to convince me. * The location: Super-Central and in a nice neighborhood Bad things: * The Service: We asked for some cards in English, which apparently was a wild thing to ask for (!?), when we ordered the food and drinks, we got them and weren't asked again until we paid. The waiter left our empty plates and trash right in front of us for a good 35 minutes before taking them (and it wasn't busy!). When we wanted to pay, it took him about 10 minutes just to get the card reader! - I work in a restaurant as well and I would be ashamed if I worked like that! * The food: Very mediocre food, Mini hamburger was nice, nothing special Though. Nice salad. Again, nothing special. * The price: Very much for very few. We all felt like we payed way too much for this kind of food. Honestly, a bit of a tourist trap. The tapas were overpriced for what you got and they really weren't anything memorable. It was probably the highest tapas bill we had while in Sevilla and the least amount of food we got. The servers didn't really seem interested in serving us and it took us almost 45 minutes before we could even get a drink on the table. The location is prime though for just enjoying the Sevillan streets, so if you need somewhere to just stop for a bit and enjoy the city, this could be the place. Just hope that you'll have a better experience than we did. read more

On this April 2012 visit, for what it is, which is a tapas and light plates restaurant on a busy street of eateries of what I assume are mostly tourists, it was quite nice. The service staff was pleasant and the food, from what I can tell as a first-time visiter to Spain, was good. The dish of "calamares" was among the most tender I've tasted anywhere and beaten, surprisingly, only by the succulence of a chicken dish. The Serrano ham was flavorful and not dried out. The paella was a little off because the seafood was a bit dry and the rice was al dente on the inside, which is fine as it might be the way it's supposed to be. Overall, the seasoning was light allowing one to taste the flavors of the food and the atmosphere was colorfully pleasant. read more

Went here Mid-July with a Friend one night around 10 PM. I had a beer since there were no wine by the glass, after an evening stroll. It was right by the Cathedral and all the other lively restaurants. It was a nice leasurely evening. We ordered the patatas bravas, shared the paella, and salmon. We were obviously tourist and were asking about what certain things on the menu and boards included, I think they might have been a touch annoyed with us for asking. No one hounding us to finish like here in the states, which was awesome, but to get waiter's attention needed to flag him down. Having said that, it seemed to be the norm so I was embracing it and going with the flow. Overall, ambiance, overall food and drink I would go back. read more

Casa Tomate (CT) is made for tourists. First, it's near the Cathedral and just about anything this close to the cathedral is designed for tourists. And second, they serve dinner before 8PM which is a tell-tale sign that it's for out-of-towners. Now, that's not a bad thing, and I am definitely one to get hungry at 7:30PM which is how we found ourselves in CT. At CT, I wouldn't opt for street-side eating - c/ Mateos Gagos tends to be insanely busy, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, and crowds will bump into you as you dine. Instead, move inside to the pleasant-enough dining room. The menu -- which is in Spanish and English -- has all of the usual suspects: cola de toro, espinaca, croquetas de gamba, tortilla de patatas, a mixed salad with tuna, olives, asparagus, tomato, and white onion - and some surprises (including a surprisingly good couscous with loads of caramelized onions, garbanzos, and nuts). The very best thing to get here, I think, is the mixed salad, with an honorable mention to the couscous, and I'd probably skip the bone dry potato tortilla. There is nothing particularly remarkable here, except for the fact that you can eat at 7:30PM, but it is certainly serviceable, and as always, affordable - we spent 17 euros on 3 tapas and one racion. read more

Avoid if possible. Go to plaza alfalfa to get tapas instead. It is located conveniently next to the catedral and alcazar but is mostly for tourists. Prices are marked up for the location but the food is rather bad for the cost. It isn't bad in and of itself, but it certainly is not worth what they charge. If you do go here, go early as it tends to fill up around 2pm for lunch. read more

Small tapas place along one of the busiest streets in Seville, next to tens of other tapas places, it really stands out for quality of service and quality of food. We arrived at ~11PM and were lucky to find a table. The waiter came within five minutes and in other five minutes we had our drinks. The wine selection is excellent and so are the tapas. read more

Very flavoury tapas. The paella was good but it is better to eat paella in Valencia region. Lots of garlic use in the tapas, which I like.
