I am so grateful to Casco Bay EyeCare! Last Spring, I had an accident with one of my eyes while shaving. It was scary, I thought I might lose my vision which was getting blurry and deteriorating in just a couple of weeks. Since I was on Cape Cod dog sitting, I drove up to the Mass Eye and Ear emergency room in Boston. What a shocking disappointment, their ancient equipment looked left over from the Civil War and their ER doctors were literally running from room to room. After that strange appointment, I was more anxious about my vision. Then I thought to call and make an appointment with Casco Bay EyeCare in Portland. I'm a long time independent Medicare agent and have lots of Maine clients who are happy patients there. A week later, with little sleep and stressed out, I drove over three hours for an appointment with Dr. Amy Cyr. I entered their beautiful Old Port offices, hopeless and exhausted. I asked one of the front desk gals for a hug. Dr. Cyr led me into her office which was so clean, her equipment looked brand new and as up to date as could be. Dr. Cyr put me at ease right away and said she could help me. She spent over an hour examining my eyes from every angle, with the latest equipment that Mass Eye and Ear ER did not have! I had one of the worst cases of dry eye Dr. Cyr had ever seen, my eyes were a mess with irritation and thus the blurriness. I left the appointment with hope restored and deep gratitude. I immediately began a daily regimen of preservative-free eye drops in both eyes several times a day, which I continue to this day. My eyes retuned to normal within a week of my appointment with Dr. Cyr. On a follow up visit a few weeks later, I brought a bouquet of flowers for my eye hero, Dr. Amy Cyr and the good gals at the front desk. My two children and I had eye exams here, but our insurance doesn't cover frames just the exams. After I told them that I would be purchasing glasses online because there was no way I could afford even one pair of their glasses they were very rude and the tech's tried to refuse to do our PD measurements. After some convincing they begrudgingly agreed. They did my two kids, but when they got to me, I noticed they held the PD machine at a strange angle and the measurement came back much different than my previous PD. I asked if they were sure they did it right and they responded with a very curt 'I know how to do my job' I got a more recent eye exam at a different place and they confirmed my PD measurement never changed and that the people at Casco Bay had botched the measurement purposely because I wasn't buying their glasses. read more

I was referred to Casco Bay Eyecare by a neighbor who has used them for years! They are by far the best place to go for an eye exam & glasses. My great experience started with an enthusiastic greeting by Debbie as soon as I walked in the door. Courtney & Dr. Amy Cyr gave me a super thorough eye exam. Then, Gina Namin pleasantly & patiently dealt with me while I tried on 25 different pairs for frames. She made sure they were just the right one & fit perfectly. Fast forward 6 months and I went back for a pair of prescription sunglasses. I needed a new style. Nick Howe was a huge help and pickled out a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses I would have never tried on myself. He was so good - my wife even loved the ones he picked out!. Inflexible policies. After being a patient here for over 10 years, I had to switch providers because this practice doesn't accept the most common vision insurance (VSP) -- and they were unwilling to help me get contacts during the period before I could get into the new practice. read more

I arrived on vacation having forgotten my contact at home. They were extremely helpful in providing me (free of charge) a 5 day supply. Everyone was super nice. If they extend this type of service to a random tourist, I would expect them to treat returning patients even better. read more

Dr. Liem is so pleasant and helpful, takes the time to explain what's going on with my eyesight and makes recommendations and assisted with referral. I can not speak to the service of the doctor but we were visiting Portland and I needed contacts on my trip because I did not paxk extra. I got my prescription sent and went there with the intention to buy a box of contacts. They were so friendly and accommodating and actually just offered since I only needed them for a few days to give me samples! And on the way there my sun glasses broke (of course how ironic) and I asked if someone might be able to fix them. Literally they fixed my sunglasses and gave me free samples for contacts (and they had nothing to gain but just good business) because I am not local. It was really appreciated and everyone was very friendly and accommodating! Thank you again. read more

The blond woman fitting glasses at the front was difficult. I had just ordered my glasses at almost 400 dollars and was picking out glasses for my daughter. I asked for the info on glasses for my daughter and she didn't want to give it to me! I was ordering glasses for daughter too but they did not have her size. They needed to order them so she could try them on. I asked 3x for my daughter's glasses info before she did not have an excuse not to give it to me. She acted put out I asked for it, which I found rude especially given the amount of money I was spending, I wanted it in case she broke the 300 dollar glasses I was ordering. I fully intended on buying their glasses I knew could get online at a fraction of the cost . I wanted to be sure my daughter liked how they looked for her first pair. Two days later my glasses were ready, went back. Receptionist put my name on list. About ten minutes later a woman came back (apparently) and said she decided to put her name back on the list. I waited my turn without leaving. When my turn came up she took the lady that came back that put her name on list after me. I will not be buying glasses for daughter here now. Going some place else. No one needs this aggravation when there spending 800 dollars on overpriced glasses 3 days before Christmas! My husband thinks I should ask for a refund for the glasses I never picked up because I promptly left after she looked at the list and took the other lady without acknowledging I had been sitting there waiting. We needed to be seen on short notice. The South Portland, Falmouth and Fore Street offices collaborated to ensure we were seen. We met with Dr. Nickerson. My husband has an incredibly complicated history as it relates to his eye health. Dr. Nickerson was patient, supportive, open and very knowledgeable. My husband rarely goes into medical appointments with high expectations. Dr. Nickerson helped him feel heard for the first time in a long time. What sweet and pleasant people! This eye care center saved me when I ripped one of my contacts during a business trip. Of course the one time I didn't bring a back up pair of contacts, one rips. I couldn't believe how nice this place was with helping my contact my optometrist from CA to get my prescription and getting me a trial lens to hold me over until I get home. I came in to pick up my trial lens and I offered to pay for it but they didn't want to charge me. So unheard of nowadays that businesses are so selfless and generous. I was incredibly appreciative. I recently went there to get a pair of glasses. I was extremely happy with the selection of frames, knowledge and service I received! I ended up getting a pair of progressive prescription glasses, plus a pair of prescription sunglasses for less than the price I was expecting to pay! I came into the Portland office of Casco Bay Eyecare as an emergency visit. My only pair of prescription eyeglasses had fallen into the ocean while i was in Portland on vacation. Not only was I seen promptly, but I received an excellent eye exam from Dr. Katherine Nickerson and additional help from her and the staff in finding another optician's shop that could make my lenses that same day. The whole office went above and beyond what was necessary to help me out. If I lived in Maine I would be a loyal client! read more

Up until several years ago I'd been either wearing glasses or lenses for most of my life until I had eye surgery. I've been to many optometrist and a few ophthalmologist in my life. I had mediocre serve at Casco Bay on Congress, mostly due to off hand comments made by an inappropriate and crass optometrist who enjoyed making off hand remarks while I was seeing another optometrist who I actually appreciated. I went to the Casco Bay on Middle St at the beginning of the year. My wife was gong there for her lenses. I had not been for an exam in the nearly two years since the follow up at Maine Eye Care for my surgery. Maine Eye is an excellent provider- very top quality. Prior to my appointment at Casco Bay on Middle St I hand the receptionist my issuance card and she verified it was the information they had on file for me. I had my exam consisting of thirty minutes three days later and everything looked great. The following week they send me a bill $160. They don't take Anthem Blue Vision. I was told that it was not their responsibility to tell me that because they don't have that information when they "verify" your insurance. I have talked to plenty if people that have experienced the same thing. I filed a complaint with the better business bureau of Maine but Casco Bay "does not comment of private patient matters." Six months later I paid the bill after they threatened to send it to a collection agency, stating that I would "agree that they were MORE than patient" They also told me that this happens "all the time." Not once did someone try to contact me to speak with me about the situation. Casco Bay Eyecare is a consumer beware operation and their customer care is abysmal. I strongly recommend finding a practice that has empathy for their patients rather than viewing each patient as dollar signs.
