Since I was on Cape Cod dog sitting, I drove up to the Mass Eye and Ear emergency room in Boston. What a shocking disappointment, their ancient equipment looked left over from the Civil War and their ER doctors were literally running from room to room. After that strange appointment, I was more anxious about my vision. Then I thought to call and make an appointment with Casco Bay EyeCare in Portland. I'm a long time independent Medicare agent and have lots of Maine clients who are happy patients there. A week later, with little sleep and stressed out, I drove over three hours for an appointment with Dr. Amy Cyr. I entered their beautiful Old Port offices, hopeless and exhausted. I asked one of the front desk gals for a hug. Dr. Cyr led me into her office which was so clean, her equipment looked brand new and as up to date as could be. Dr. Cyr put me at ease right away and said she could help me. She spent over an hour examining my eyes from every angle, with the latest equipment that Mass Eye and Ear ER did not have! I had one of the worst cases of dry eye Dr. Cyr had ever seen, my eyes were a mess with irritation and thus the blurriness. I left the appointment with hope restored and deep gratitude. I immediately began a daily regimen of preservative-free eye drops in both eyes several times a day, which I continue to this day. My eyes retuned to normal within a week of my appointment with Dr. Cyr. On a follow up visit a few weeks later, I brought a bouquet of flowers for my eye hero, Dr. Amy Cyr and the good gals at the front desk. They were able to switch the lenses into a pair of sunglasses I still had, that were luckily an identical frame. They also helped make sure I had sunglass clip-ons to use until I could get a replacement. The place was clean, well staffed, and they provided absolutely fantastic customer service. Highly recommend for any vision needs.

I was directed to a large selection of frames to start picking on my own. But then Tami joined me & added a few more frames for consideration. With her optics & shop inventory knowledge, I chose two new pairs. Couple days later, I brought in a damaged pair and Tami was fixed them same day.

The optician, Mandy, spent a good while considering the options and doing research on the brand and local distributors. She was pleasant and energetic and didn't pressure me at all. In the end, we decided I would reach out to a distributor in Falmouth, since Mandy wasn't sure her lab could do the work on a specialty pair of glasses. I was very impressed that I got such good service even though they didn't make any money on the transaction. We're new residents in Portland, and they have my business going forward!

I've had glasses for 20 years and lenses have never gotten cloudy. Took them back only to hear the glasses were out of the "2 year warranty with the manufacturer." Not my problem! She is incredibly nice and makes you feel comfortable about getting your eyes checked. My four stars are solely directed towards her and her work. If I were to rate my overall experience, I would probably give it three stars. The woman who takes you for pretest before your examination, I forget her name, is slightly rude. For instance, when doing the pressure test, I have a really hard time keeping my eyes open to get an accurate reading. When I went today, she had to retake the test numerous times and I could hear her heavy breathing and annoyance each time, which didn't help an already stressful situation. When she asked me questions, it felt rushed and like her mind was elsewhere. It just made for a stressful experience. Lastly, when ordering contacts or trying to schedule an appointment, it can be a challenge to reach them, and even after leaving a voicemail, sometimes you don't get a call back. Overall, the service of Juliann trumps the lack of customer service from the other workers, which is why I rate it four stars. If they could fix some of the those bumps, Family Eye Care could be really, really great in all aspects.
