I'm a beginner at crochet and I stopped in to pick up some yarn it was the first time I had been in and I'm not super familiar to this stuff. Never has anyone even acknowledged me (except the owner who once actually asked me "What do you WANT?"). I went back in yesterday, hoping for a new vibe because I had money to spend and you never know, it could be a new owner. The yarn is whatever but over priced. The employee acted like everyone was in her way while she restocked a shelf and tried desperately to ignore everyone. I'll just wait to hear if there is a new owner instead of wasting my time again. I've been to this lys a few times. Employees are usually rude and snotty. Each time, they act like you are interrupting, or they are doing you a favor by answering questions. I'm not sure what entitled customer service people they employ, but I would rather drive to Noma Knits, Fiber Circle, or even shop online than give money to a business that can't be warm and welcoming to customers walking in. read more

NOT a store for beginners! Really, if you are an accomplished knitter or crocheter, this store is wonderful. The selection is well-curated and ethically sourced. The staff is sweet and knows their product. But the staff I've come across does NOT know how to guide customers who aren't already fluent in the language of yarn. The store is organized for experienced knitters to browse and the selection is too expensive to allow for learning and experimenting. Until you've developed your skills, unless money isn't any kind of issue, try the Legacy in Sebastopol for odds and ends or even, oh I hate to say it, one of the corporate chain craft supply stores, especially if you're gathering supplies for kids. read more

I can't recommend this yarn shop enough! The selection of yarn is extremely high quality and ethically sourced. Every yarn has a finished swatch or project next to it so you can see what the finished yarn works up to. The place is so clean and organized! Obviously the yarn is going to be more expensive than that of cheap acrylic or nylon yarn but it's way more worth it. read more

Great little shop! Yarn shops with quality yarn are becoming free and far between because of online shopping. But if you are like me you want to touch the yarn before I buy it! They had a nice selection of high quality beautiful yarns. They also had needle felting and embroidery designs. Classes and books are available for learning how to knit and crochet. As they celebrate their 15th year anniversary I decided this was a good time to write a review. Firstly let me say that I am a long time customer of this shop so yes, this might be a lengthy review so I won't go too far back! During covid things were so hard for everyone. As we were sheltering in place I found my need for knitting became necessary for so many reasons. I needed yarn! Castaway to the rescue. Justine, the shop owner went over & beyond to help and to even allow for pick up from her front porch!! This was so valuable to me and really helped to get through a hard time. Over the years that followed I found the thoughtfulness, caring and customer service continued to date. When I've had trouble with a project they happily helped if time permitted. If not, they offered a one on one session with one of their teachers. There was always a solution. I was in need of something and sent a text as the store was closing. The owner stayed and waited for me so I could get what I needed. My orders get placed and filled seamlessly when I'm in need of more quantity than what's in stock. The yarn choices, inspirations from samples, kits, books & supplies are amazing. Lots of classes to learn something new or meet a knitwear designer! It's truly a lovely shop with an owner that loves what she does and wants to help and inspire her customers. I've learned valuable tips from Justine over the years. I for one am truly grateful to have a shop to find such broad choices of fibers, colors and brands. It's like being a kid in a candy shop! Well stocked, good selection of yarns. But, beware of the classes. I just took a 2 hour beginning crochet class, there were only 2 of us so I thought I would get some good attention, I'm a knitter and had never crocheted. Wrong, the instructor spent nearly all of her time with the other student, I barely got through single crochet, let alone double and triple. The handouts were not helpful at all, written instructions assumed you already knew how to crochet. YouTube was more helpful! read more

What a beautiful store! I have been really wanting to come here and finally made it!! WOW. The space is sooooo huge and sooooo pretty! Lots of street parking with three hour meters. Easy to find parking. Lots of other shops nearby - good place to spend the day I think! I definitely recommend if you're a yarn person that you visit!! Lots of really beautiful high end yarns in gorgeous colors and textures. They will gladly wind your yarns while you wait. I brought a project and sat at the table and worked for a while. I recently went back into Cast Away for some fresh fiber. The owner was so helpful and kind, it was shocking the difference in service I received. She helped me look for the kind of yarn I needed for a special project, and when I was checking out, she offered to wind my skein for me, even though her winder was broken! I recalled my negative review from years ago and wanted to post an update for others. Very pleased with the customer service, maybe I had caught the owner on a few bad days previously, it happens to the best of us. Highly recommended yarn shop! read more

Gorgeous, gorgeous yarns organized beautifully so you can see and find everything you need and even what you didn't know you needed. Very friendly and knowledgeable owner and staff. They will wind your yarn for you. They will leave you alone if you're a regular and I know you like to be left alone. They will also greet you and answer all your questions if you're a chatty Kathie, if you text them about what you need, they will do the transaction on the phone and send it to your house. During the pandemic they kept me sane! The space is beautiful and relaxing with places to sit and knit and special evenings set aside for that. The space is also full of beautiful samples to inspire! from Santa Barbara to Mendocino, this is in my top two yarn stores ever!!! They stock yarn across a variety of price points. And they have materials and projects for other fiber arts beyond knit and crochet... But I know nothing about if you're interested check it out. I'm so grateful that they opened and are still open -- brick and mortar yarn shops where you can touch and admire and imagine and fall into an almost meditation are very rare! read more

What actually happened is yes I was in a FaceTime call with my mom GUSHING about your beautiful store and asking her what I could buy for her since I was visiting from San Diego. As I was about to purchase punch needle supplies and yarn you came up to me and said "Ummmm We have a NO speakerphone policy." In a very rude tone. I was one of 3 customers in your store at the time and was not greeted when I arrived and definitely did not feel like my business was wanted even before you came up to me. If people are bothered by hearing how nice your shop is and excited to buy a significant amount of merchandise perhaps those customers should be asked to relax. Mine is not the first review to note your inability to speak politely to people so I don't feel that this review is off base at all. Thankfully I am not local to you so I will not be back to annoy you or your customers with my speakerphone FaceTime call to spend more money at your shop. read more

First time visitor to the shop. Spectacular. Beautiful selection of covetable yarns. I imagine that anything created with these yarns would be beautiful even if the pattern were off because of the quality of the raw materials. Many brands of yarn I had only seen before on line. Very happy to see in person! Also very nice supply of knitting/crochet adjacent crafts and all that one would need. I don't live in Santa Rosa but will be back. I'm from out of town and have been to the shop twice, both times with knitting friends. While I like the shop very much, my friends do not. I appreciated the modern displays but they found the environment cold. They were especially put off by the staff. So, like anything else, taste is subjective. If I could give zero stars to this shop, I would. I went into the shop on my lunch hour this past week and was not surprised why I don't shop in this store. There were no other shoppers at the time and the owner made me feel like I was bothering her with my questions. She was very uptight, unfriendly, and down right rude! This is not the first time I have had horrible service by the owner. I was easily going to spend $75+ on yarn but the bad service made me walk away with only a $13 purchase. I would rather drive north to Purls of Joy in Healdsburg or south to Yarnitudes in Sebastopol, then to shop at Cast Away. It's very shocking to see not once, but twice, the bad service I received from the owner. I will not return and will not refer my friends and family to this yarn shop! read more

This is a beautiful store with a great selection of yarn. However, they only get 2 stars from me because of customer service. I bought a bunch of yarn during the Sonoma County Yarn Hop in July. None of the shops would wind the yarn during the weekend because they were so busy. This is totally understandable. However, they all said they would wind yarn later during days when it wasn't busy. This was not the case. Cast Away & Folk would only wind yarn from their store, nothing else. When I went in today, there was no line, the sales girl was just casually eating her lunch. I even told her I would write a Yelp review, she seemed disappointed, but really didn't care. I can understand this rule during normal circumstances. But when I say I spent a whole weekend shopping for yarn in our county, you'd think they'd try to help me out. Here's the thing. I'm one of those rare people in my generation that still loves brick and mortar stores. People like me are going away. The only reason people will continue to come back to stores like this is for customer service. When we can order everything online for cheaper and have it delivered to our door, the only reason to go into an actual store is to see the material and for the customer service. Without that, these businesses will eventually go away. So, word of advice to little shops like this. Bend your rules now and then when it's easy. Win your customers over. Don't make it easy for us to shrug our shoulders and say to ourselves, "Fine, I'll get it on Amazon." To the owner: convince me to come back and I will. Otherwise, I'll window shop, write down what I want, and order it online for next day delivery. read more

Hardly any sample knits and very very little in terms of books, knitting magazines (none!) or patterns. They have a lot of the same brand yarn. Considering the size of the space I was surprised as to the few choices. Not too friendly sales staff.....one woman who, after I complimented how nice the shop was, did not respond. I have this thing for visiting any and all local craft stores whenever I can. When I saw how close this store was to where Boyfriend and I were staying in Santa Rosa, I knew we would have to swing in -- even if I didn't buy anything, I like to know what entices the locals. They sell a variety of Aida cloth colors as well as needle felting kits, which I had not seen anywhere else before! It's very quaint and the employees here are very helpful, but not overbearing. They let you wander the store in peace, quietly browsing everything they have to offer. I ended up purchasing Aida cloth in a gray that I couldn't find anywhere else except online -- and at a fair price, too! I would definitely come back here if I'm ever in the area. read more

Although I sew and knit, I visit this store primarily for the yarn - the fabric section is just too precious. They have a good selection of yarn, and I usually find something every time I come in. I like the way they've recently reorganized the yarn by manufacturer rather than weight. I generally get good customer service, particularly from Robin. The worst customer service is from the owner, who virtually never greets customers or offers her help; I've felt unwelcome at times. Because of that, I'm spending more time at Knitterly in Petaluma and Hen Haus in Cotati. read more
