We stopped in for lunch today. The setting is very nice. The waitress was friendly. Those are the only positive things I can say about it. It was a little after 2 and we were the only ones having lunch. We ordered two hamburgers, both medium rare. One was supposed to be without cheese. We didn't want lettuce because of the current scare. In fact, I asked only for onions. We waited about 40 minutes for our food. Another couple came in after us. They finished eating before we were served. When the food finally came, they both had cheese and they had lettuce, tomato and pickles. No onion. Also, they had fries, which we didn't ask for. And they charged us extra for them. The waitress took back the one that wasn't supposed to have cheese and brought another one. Unfortunately both were cooked well done and were cold. They asked if we had time for them to redo our order. We were not willing to wait any longer. Apparently the staff was taking pictures of the food to post on social media. That's probably why it was cold. So when the waitress finally brought our meals, she told us that they were going to be shown on their Social Media Accounts. I guess that was supposed to make us feel okay about waiting almost an hour. It didn't. We asked to see the manager but he/she never came over. They did comp one of the burgers. The waitress was apologetic but that doesn't compensate for poor management. So unless you have a lot of time and don't care if after a long wait, you don't get what you ordered, I would avoid this place. read more

On a recent road trip around New Mexico, we stopped in Las Vegas, New Mexico for one night specifically to stay at the Castaneda. Owned by the owners of The Plaza also in Las Vegas, NM, they have done a beautiful job of restoring the old hotel. The Castaneda was once a Harvey House of Fred Harvey fame and located right at the railroad station. There aren't too many of the old Fred Harvey hotels and restaurants left. The rooms are historic, yet have all the modern conveniences and are extremely comfortable. You can feel the history within the walls. There are 20 rooms in the hotel. Our room was immaculately clean, comfortable and looked at at the railroad tracks. We stayed in a family bedroom. The main bedroom had a king bed, desk, and large bedroom. There was a door that went into another small room that had bunk beds and a chair along with a window to the outside. Perfect for a family with 2 children. We would loved to have eaten at the restaurant, and had a drink at the bar, but unfortunately we were there on a Monday, and both were closed. We have good friends who stayed at the Castañeda and loved it. We've seen the great remodeling job the owners did, and the rooms are modern but still with a Western touch. The main problem the hotel is having of late is keeping its restaurant open. For a while they had a lovely fine dining restaurant, augmented by a cozy bar/lounge area with a fireplace and a view of the tracks and railroad station. But, due a lack of staff, they moved all the food operations to the lounge. It was nice enough, and they had a fairly good menu, so no complaints. However, now they have changed restaurant owners, and apparently the previous owner took his liquor license with him. So the nice little package store is closed, and you can only get soft drinks with your meal. The kicker is, during this "soft opening," they also don't have their full menu available. My wife and I went for an anniversary dinner there last night, and it was perfectly fine, but the dishes we had researched on the hotel's website were not offered, and we ended up going to another place for an after-dinner drink, so it wasn't quite the festive occasion he had envisioned. That said, the staff is fantastic and hard-working, and everyone aims to please, so as someone else mentioned, there are lots of good places to eat in town -- come for the hotel and Harvey House ambience, and try some of the other restaurants who'd love your business until this hotel sorts out its dining situation. read more

A fun stay to say you've been there, if you've arrived on the train, and/or to imagine how it might have been in its heyday. But...the Casteñeda seems like the less fortunate step-sibling of the Plaza Hotel. A few of the oddities that made it feel less classy: a big pile of towels were being folded on the table in the lobby; dishes were being scraped right at the end of the bar in the doorway to the patio; we had to ask for shampoo and soap; and the room themes didn't make sense to me - see photos. We didn't eat at the restaurant given the lukewarm reviews both online and by locals. I love that it's a historic building and applaud the efforts to restore the hotel - just wish I loved it more in person. read more

I love historic hotels - especially ones that have been touched by Restoration Angels. The Historic Fred Harvey Castaneda Hotel has definitely been touched by angels. As I stepped into the Lobby from the hustle and bustle of 2021, I felt like I had stepped back into the 1800's. In my mind a beautiful cowboy stepped out of the shadows and offered me a seat at the bar . . . . . . . Oh, wait . . . . . I'm promising too much. I wish that had happened . . . but every minute I spent in the Castaneda I kept looking over my shoulder for that cowboy. In reality - my room, the one on the 2nd floor corner, was a cross between modern elegance and historic splendor. Windows on two sides. Great view. Historic furnishings. Modern bedding. If you find yourself in Las Vegas, NM to visit friends, to crew for a film, or just as a tourist in a great western town . . . be sure you make reservations to step back in time . . . . And then we had dinner in their restaurant . . . . wonderful service, fantastic food. My only regret is that I was so full of great food & wine that I was forced to SHARE a dessert. If you like history and a renovation well done, you will love the Castaneda. You can sit out on the porch, have a drink, watch the trains come in and out, and enjoy the New Mexico air. Our room overlooked the courtyard, yes. Comfortable and large, the only negative was the little refrigerator was on the floor. Large parking lot! Restaurant was open and food good. Art (avant garde) was contradiction to history but lots of photographs on wall informed us of where the old girl had.been. So glad we stayed here instead of the Plaza on the square. We visited the Plaza and it was busy right ion the street with little parking except valet. read more

We took a day trip to Las Vegas NM. We stopped in to see the Castaneda Hotel. They have done a grand job remodeling it. The antiques are well preserved. We didn't eat there, wish we had, we saw the chefs preparing the food. They have a package liquor store that is magnificent. They carry many New Mexico wines, beer and liquor. They carry many products from different countries. We taste tested 3 different products, all were delicious. The man behind the counter was pleasant and very knowledgeable. My mother was treated terribly by the front desk attendant named Andre Luna. She made a reservation sept. 29, for an upcoming trip a few weeks later. She broke her foot shortly after making the reservation and regrettably had to cancel. When she called The Castaneda. She had the misfortune of getting , Mr. Luna on the line. His affect was cold and unsupportive. He told her it was policy of the hotel not to issue any refunds if the reservation was less than 14days. He offered nothing to help my mother with her situation. Fortunately she decided to wait a few days and let the shock wear off from this inhospitable experience with Mr. Luna. She was almost resigned to losing the $300 because of the way the Mr. Luna treated her. My mom came to her senses and called back and found out that in an emergency situation they would refund her and gladly did so with no reservation. Thanks to Amanda who answered the line when she called back. She was professional, and took care of everything. My mom was treated so rudely by someone just because he is mean spirited and or ignorant of his job title. Mr. Luna, I hope you read this review. If you are unhappy in your place of work Get out of hospitality. You bring the whole industry down. Everybody has bad days. I have been following the progress of this wonderfully restored building that has been closed since something like 1948! This was the first time I had been in Las Vegas since it opened and what a treat! Great restoration. Wonderful history. Beds were nice. Keep in mind that it was originally Restaurant is very nice. Even though it is next the railroad it was not at all noisy. Give it a try! Built in 1898, so it does have some rustic aspects to it. But that is what makes it special!! I saw someone else's review that the restaurant was not open on Sunday. But it was last night. So, maybe in the past 2 weeks since the other review, they have changed hours. Also saw on someones review that it was tough to get around town. But there is a shuttle that will take you anywhere in town for some ridiculously cheap rate. Meadow City Express. read more

We really were happy with the restoration of this Harvey House hotel. It is like stepping back in time. Great staff and the room we had "Squirrel" was very large and furnished with great antiques. Every thing in the hotel was very charming and such a change from the typical hotels these days. The train came by twice and since we were on the second floor, we got to enjoy seeing it stop at the Las Vegas station. My reason for 4 stars is that we did eat an early dinner in the bar area ( regular dining room was closed) but there was a limited menu . Unfortunately, my wife and I had the Green chile stew which caused my wife to have stomach distress. I did not have any problems. However, the flan dessert was excellent. I am sorry as this was the only problem we had while staying at this charming hotel. Here is hoping for a successful business adventure in Las Vegas. read more

We have been following the progress of the resurrection of this historic property. Rooms opened in April, and as soon as we saw the bar was open, we booked a room. Lobby is gorgeous, room is large, beautifully decorated in antiques and SW furnishings, and bathroom has a huge tile shower. Bar has a pleasant open feel with lots of windows and a fun cocktail menu. PROS We came here by good ole' Amtrak from the Flagstaff, AZ station. We were able to walk straight up to the hotel from the depot which was very cool. The hotel is GORGEOUS! They did such an amazing job restoring it! Our room is really nice. I saw a previous review complaining that nothing is nearby to the hotel. That's not true. There's an AllSup's down the street and an Antique shop right across from the hotel; Dick's Pub and Charlie's Spic and Span Bakery are just a short walk away. There's also Bird scooters right outside the hotel. We rode the scooters to The Plaza Hotel for breakfast about a mile away. We had dinner at the restaurant inside Castenada and sat at the bar. The in house made ice cream was good. The bartender and everyone was very nice. The food was good! I had fish and chips and boyfriend had a burger with onion rings. The Bottle Room inside the hotel staffed by Francisco was cool. Francisco was very helpful and fun. The boyfriend bought several beers to go there. CONS The air conditioning worked but the thermostat was really difficult to figure out. Maren, the front desk receptionist, had to come up to our room to help us get the air to a good temp. So, a note to the hotel, consider getting user friendly thermostats; I saw another review complaining about the thermostats too. Also, there were sooo many mosquitos outside. My boyfriend loves being out doors and we were trying to eat and play games but we got several bites and eventually had to go inside. So, if you're coming by, definitely bring some Off. And a note to the hotel, please consider putting out citronella candles out, especially with the patio seating. Overall, it was a great stay at a wonderful historical place! read more

Our room had 12 ft. ceilings, beautiful antique furniture and hand carved art that just made our experience so memorable. The staff was terrific and the restaurant was great. My only comment would be that the restaurant menu is a bit limited, but really that is nothing. The town itself has lots of really good restaurants in it for such a small place. If you are on a road trip I highly recommend staying at this place. read more

This hotel belongs to the same owners as the La Posada Hotel in Winslow Arizona. The latter is an awesome destination hotel which we thoroughly enjoy. What the owners suggest is that you can stay at the La Posada, then take the Amtrak to Las Vegas NM, stay at Castaneda, then take the Amtrak back to Winslow. The Castaneda is located directly adjacent to the train station. The owners did a lovely job of restoring the Castaneda hotel. But it is pretty simple compared to the elaborate complex at the La Posada. What's also very limiting is food. La Posada has a renowned restaurant (Turquoise Room) where you can get three gourmet meals daily. Castaneda has a restaurant which features bar food. Furthermore, there is very little for vegetarians or pescatarians. It is closed two days a week, and never has breakfast nor lunch. It is hard to give even three stars to a hotel which cannot feed you three meals a day. The hotel staff however were lovely people and made us feel comfortable, so I think 3 stars is appropriate. It is interesting that a customer from 2019 writes about their breakfast at the hotel. As of 2022, there is no breakfast of any kind at the hotel. They do set out free coffee in the morning, but I could not drink it since they only offer non-dairy creamer (I avoid consuming nasty chemicals). While there's very little to do at the hotel, the town does have more places of interest to visitors than Winslow, so you will want to walk around the town. Lounging around the hotel won't work, the way that it would at the La Posada. Now, a bit about Las Vegas NM. This was once the second wickedest town in the West, with the same desperadoes as at Dodge City. So there is a very interesting history to the town. The town is fairly spread out though (about 3 x 6 miles area). If you come by Amtrak, you won't have a car. There are no taxis, no Ubers, and no regular bus service. So you're on your own two feet. The main town square (the Plaza) is about 1.5 mile walk from the Castaneda. Fine for athletic young folks, a bit harder for retirees. You can find all three meals in town, but you may have to walk quite a bit. We could not find a single place which serves a decent latte, though several will serve you a poor one. There is a Starbucks, but it's just too far to walk to. There is no grocery store within walking distance, although you can walk to the Alon gas station, which has a convenience store. Interestingly, about a 4 block walk away is a sushi restaurant which serves very nice sushi (for dinner only). The owners also own the Plaza hotel, located on the Plaza. This is a more upscale hotel and has a full-time restaurant. But do you really want to walk 1.5 miles from the Amtrak train station, hauling your luggage, to your hotel? I thought not. So you can go there if you're driving or are a young athlete, but not for most other folks. If you come to Las Vegas NM, you need to read the book by Howard Bryan: The Wildest of the Wild West. You can buy that book ahead of time, or at the antique store across the street from the Castaneda, and probably many other places in town. The book is a total hoot and really gives you the spirit of the times. We enjoyed our Amtrak trip and our stay at the Castaneda, so I do recommend this outing, but you need to know the limitations. And again, to emphasize, if you are driving rather than taking the train, you want to stay at the Plaza Hotel, instead. Same owners, but higher class hotel. I did not check out their rooms though. The rooms at the Castaneda are very nice, especially the king suites. These are worth the slight upcharge from the regular rooms. P.S. Some reviewer claims that there is a shuttle bus in town. As of 2022, that is a half-truth. There is a free bus which makes two runs a day, two days a week (I'm not kidding) to the next town. I don't think this will help you in the slightest when you come to visit. read more

This is a great honor to be the first to review The Castañeda Hotel at long last. To fully appreciate this establishment you must understand the history of this building and entire town; a history that is too much to go into in a review but I assure you will be fascinated and totally in love with the entire town. I came to Las Vegas by chance a few years ago and fell in love the first five minutes. I am back in Las Vegas multiple times a year since and so I have been lucky to watch the Castaneda's progress which has been exciting and fascinating as the owner has been fantastic about sharing the current day progress along with the stories and details of the past. Located just moments from the famous Plaza and the modern conveniences of town and interstate yet the setting adds to the historic vibe the new owner has recreated for visitors. The revitalization project of The Castañeda has brought modern luxuries for your overnight stay while paying tribute and staying true to the history of the hotel and town. What I saw of the rooms (I had the opportunity to peek in a couple) there are various configurations from multi room suites to a more standard room. The furnishings in room are new and lovely while the common/public areas appear to be furnished and decorated with a combination of new and refurbished pieces which are all beautiful. Rooms and common areas all appear spacious. I was visiting in the morning hours so there wasn't a lot of staff but the staff I encountered and spoke with was very friendly and informative. To visit The Castañeda is a true experience and step back in time and should be at the top of your list of things to do when visiting New Mexico!!! And for those of you who have an interest in the supernatural this hotel was featured on a great episode of Ghost Adventures on The Travel Channel and yes you can definitely feel a presence of the past but not in a scary or ominous way. read more

28/29 Apr: First night of two night stay and not sure l am going to make it. Hotel is open but on a very limited basis and we knew that when we stayed Friday/Saturday at the La Posada. Main problem is the very strong chemical smell in our room - 206. Smells of fresh paint and maybe floor stain/sealer. It's past midnight and my headache is bad - Can't sleep and throat raw. Few other minor issues are this corner south facing room has no drapes, just thin, plastic white blinds; can only imagine how early sunrise will be coming thru the windows and two small windows have nothing at all. Had NO idea how program AC so had to contact front desk, who was very helpful. No blow dryer, no bath floor mat so had to have dryer brought to room and used hand towel as mat. No phone is room so calls had to be placed thru my cell. Been sitting in the lobby since 2 am when I couldn't take the smell of chemicals any longer. Gentleman at the desk went up to the second floor to see about maybe opening a window - No dice. I told him we tried to earlier but all our room windows are painted firmly, shut. Going on 4:40, absolutely no sleep and what a sore throat & pounding headache! Update 12 May: Had a terrible visit and weeks later I'm still waiting for email replies to my issues. They indicate they are 'working on it' but they NEVER reply as requested nor when THEY say they will. Be very careful before booking ANYTHING with them. They are NOT ready for full customer service and their 'soft opening' is a JOKE! read more

This is a place you must stay if you are in Las Vegas New Mexico. It is a historic hotel that has been re-designed by a team that is committed to restoring hotels that were on Railroad lines a.k.a. Harvey hotels. It is truly like walking back in time. Our bed was so comfortable and our room was a little strange in that we had a king suite and we had an extra double bed in what should've maybe been a sitting area but it was still quite comfortable. The bathroom is heavenly and the shower is wonderful. The bar Castaneda is a perfect place to enjoy an evening beverage we had the prawns and the best margarita I have ever had. Service was excellent both in the hotel and in the bar. They have complementary coffee in the morning which is always appreciated and I enjoyed mine looking out at the beautiful scenery in the morning as the sun was coming up.Historic hotel with lots to offer in a small town that is when you should visit if you are driving down the aisle 25. They have a sister property in town which we will visit at some point in the future I am sure. read more

If traveling by train, seriously reconsider staying here. While very historical, there are no amenities in the room, not even coffee and no food nearby. The restaurant only open after 3 and close Sunday Monday No transportation from depot and closest convenience store 3 blocks away. So for breakfast lunch and dinner Sunday it was convenience store food. The good parts were the bed, the elevator and restaurant good when open. If one stayed here with a car, it would have been great. No uber or car rentals in town. read more

We were really excited to stay at this hotel with so much history. Rooms were cozy and big after the remodel. Hotel staff was friendly, dining room staff was wonderful. We had drinks in the afternoon, onion rings were underwhelming. Everyone loved their breakfast the next morning, but the avocado toast wasn't worth the price tag. What a cool place! This is an old Harvey House hotel that has recently been lovingly restored. They put a lot of thought and care into the effort and it shows. It is definitely a memorable place in which to stay. And, for that matter, so is the surrounding town. Las Vegas, New Mexico is an old, old town - it was here before the railroad came through. And, it was an important town - it was bigger than Denver. There are lots of cool old stone and brick buildings in the town, many of which are still in use. We stayed in Room 208 on the nights of November 11 and 12. We were not pleased with the room -- it is small and does not even have a closet. There was no place to hang clothes except a couple of hooks on the door. The thermostat did not work and no one could figure out what was wrong. So we had to rely on a space heater, which meant the room was either too hot or too cold. The door does not fit -- we could see lights from the hall all around the door and could hear everything in the hall. The side of the bed closest to the outside wall creaked everytime we moved so much that we thought it could collapse. If you do stay there, do not let them give you Room 208. On the good side, the room was clean and the food in the bar was verty good. read more

Restaurant advertised Christmas Eve dinner, special menu, $50 Prime Rib specialty (pre-order). We got that and more. Hot food trays coming out of the Kitchen through the reception/waiting area pushing waiting customers to the side- what a nice experience! Advertised 10oz and 14oz Prime Rib but told 14oz not available, 3 main course orders made wrong, servers had no idea whom ordered what meal, did we have our drinks freshened? Of course not as server never once came back and asked if we wanted drinks or refills. Gets better- the infamous Prime Rib was hard to cut. Part the meat and part the dull, old "steak" knives. Best part of dinner was the server - if you like to be served by someone that would rather be having a route canal than doing his job. Rude, dismissive with backtalk and all. Couldn't wait to get out of this place. If the check had not included a 15% gratuity, server would have got a bag of coal. Merry Christmas! read more

We came to the Castaneda as a result of our love of the El Posada in Winslow. Knowing that the lore of the Harvey House in Las Vegas, NM was being recreated brought us here with excitement. Unfortunately what we encountered during our two day stay was a hotel that was not yet ready for prime time. Good aspects...It's history that is in the process of being recreated. The exterior of the building looks good and will only get better with landscaping. Our room was clean (other than filthy exterior windows), the primary bed was very comfortable, the furnishings in the main bedroom were for the most part period appropriate, the shower was large. The on-site restaurant was very good...food well done and presented, service fine. The front desk staff was very friendly. Needing Attention....The hotel is in the process of being restored and is in a neighborhood that can only be described as decrepit. In twenty years (assuming the country doesn't implode) the neighborhood will no doubt be vastly improved, but we don't have that time. The main lobby is a bit of a mess with for sale sweatshirts and tee shirts claiming too much territory. The room...Not one place to hang up clothing. The bathroom mirror is hung so low that for anyone over 5'4" it's almost impossible to use it without becoming a hunchback. The blinds in the main bedroom were flimsy, hung so that the length was six inches short of the bottom of the window, blinds also rather ineffective at shielding light from the outside street lamps. The freshly painted walls were unadorned of art and only a few very small black and white reprints of photos were hung. We stopped by to look at this fantastic 122 year-old Harvey House which was the very first Harvey House built by Fred Harvey along the Santa Fe Railroad line. Located on Railroad Ave in Las Vegas, it is one of only 3-4 that survive today. Although we did not stay in the hotel, we ate in the restaurant out on the huge veranda. The menu has something for everyone, children to adults; and the full-service bar can mix up anything you desire to quench your thirst. We split the fish and chips, which was enough to satisfy us and have room for desert. A treasure trove of delightful details. I stayed 2 nights in room 211. The boutique nature is apparent in the details of unique furniture choices, artworks everywhere and embedded history of Fred Harvey, the Harvey girls and train travel. My room was spacious, bed comfortable and shower had hot water and good pressure. The front desk staff are friendly, knowledgeable about the hotel and the area. I ate several meals at the restaurant and enjoyed each one. The corn beef hash with poached eggs and potatoes is fantastic. Even the ketchup is flavorful. Cottage cheese pancakes are hearty and yummy with juicy blueberries. Dinner items I enjoyed are the sweet potato soup, shepherds pie with lamb and a buttermilk ice cream with baked plum. The dining area is well designed with if windows and a warm fireplace, and comfortable. The dining staff is excellent. read more

Hotel built in 1848, vacant for 70 years is being restored. Just s few rooms open and we managed to get one for a night. Gorgeous refurbished suite. The entire hotel is still being refurbished so it was fun to see the work. The bar is open and very nice. They have a small menu for snacks, onion rings fantastic! Loved our short stay. read more
