I posted this review many days ago but no person seems to care about the Flag. I arrived on October 7, 2025 and still no correction. When o asked the day person in charge he stated that the out the flag up there so they could direct people to the bathrooms. Really! He said people were "Stupid and couldn't read"! Highly disappointed in Castaways! No one seemed to know who was in charge of the six church group that sponsored Castaways! Personally the display of the flag is disrespectful and unpatriotic! All Veterans should consider shopping somewhere else! Arrived at Castaways early Morning on July 2025. Our favorite place to look for great deals at at a reasonable cost for a worthy cause. The only complaint I have, as a Veteran, is the display of the U.S. Flag. The American Flag is displayed above and to the right of the Bathroom. Personally, I would consider that display to dishonor the flag and what it stands for. Perhaps the person who was told to put it up did not take into account what was underneath the Flag, an honest mistake! I would hope that the Manager of Castaways would look into this matter and place the flag in a place showing Dignity and respect. Signed a Veteran! read more

If I could give ZERO I would. The pure garbage they have the audacity to sell at a ridiculously high price, is criminal! The children's clothes aren't fit to be used as rags. The appliances are DISGUSTING, filthy disease ridden! The shoes, you have got some nerve selling this crap to people that struggle financially. But good old Rockport has loves the "beggars can't be choosers" thought. The volunteers? Nasty, rude, self righteous, better than thou people. Overpriced and extremely rude staff . These are all second hand items . The prices they charge are the same as you would pay at a store for a brand new item a lot of the time ... Everyone that works there acts like your inconveniencing them and god forbid you have a child in your shopping cart . It's like they hate children ( mind you my child was literally in the cart , not screaming whining or crying or making a scene or touching anything ........ Despite the controversy regarding hanging the American Flag above the restroom doors, this shop is vital to the community. Recycling used items keeps items from going to the landfill, provides affordable options from furniture, clothing, kitchen wares and more. If you're into thrifting, this place should definitely be on your radar. Although it basically has the same offerings that any goodwill has. It has the usual helpings of old worn out furniture and used and unwanted appliances. We found their pricing on the furnishings were much more expensive than Goodwill. After looking around, we thought their pricing on everything is just slightly higher than what Goodwill would charge. Some of the prices just seemed out of line from reality. They do offer some sale events on certain days and keep in mind they are closed on Sunday. Our shopping trip did not yield anything worthwhile, but perhaps your visit will be different. read more

This volunteer-driven thrift store is a great member of the Rockport community. They raise bunches of money for charitable causes in Rockport. Many of the community churches are beneficiaries of this place, so it's all for a good cause. The store is somewhat clean, with wide aisles and plenty of used clothing. The prices seemed to be a bit on the high side for electronics. Of course, most of the electronics were out of date, and as far as I could tell, there wasn't anywhere to test them out to make sure that they work. They had a good variety of cups, mugs and coffee carafes. The art selection seemed weird and overpriced- I usually just buy the art for the frames, but it was too expensive. The clerks are all volunteers, so don't expect stellar customer service. Nobody was on the sales floor to answer any questions. The check out line was long with the clerks taking their sweet time. The most expensive stuff is kept behind a locked case at the front of the store. The building is nice, and there's plenty of parking. I am proud of Castaways- during Hurricane Harvey, they became a hub of activity to help people who suffered through the storm. They handed out clothes and other materials to people who had lost everything. It was really a great sight to see. read more

I'm not really that impressed with this "thrift" shop. I believe their prices are way too high for a community that is struggling to get back on it's feet. Much of the clothing is outdated and not in good shape. The shoes are way over priced. I know this is a non for profit, but I would like to see it cater more to lower income people, who otherwise, can't afford new clothing or household items. read more

Hands down best thrift store ever! This was one of my Mom's favorite thrift shops to visit every time we came to Rockport. Now, even 2years after she passed away, this is still my kids favorite place to visit when we are in town. The staff is ALWAYS very friendly and helpful! Over the years I've donated thousands of dollars of property to this organization. That's going to come to an end. It seems that last time I made a donation and then went to the main entrance with my wife and daughter to shop there was a new policy at the store. The policy is to refuse entry to anyone carrying a large or medium sized purses. It seems to be administered on an ad-hoc basis and only succeeds in hurting people's feelings and upsetting people who come there to shop and make additional donations. I hope in the future that the organization will provide security in the parking lot now that women are having to put their valuables in their cars. More often than not I would come to the back of the store to make a donation of property (which I transport from San Antonio) and then do a little shopping. I guess in the future I'll be shopping at other thrift stores and looking for other places to donate our families items. It's unfortunate that it has to come to this but it just seems like an unfair policy across the board. read more

This thrift store is staffed by volunteers from 5 of the local churches. All proceeds go back to the community and churches through grants to non-profits and other community interest groups. I find their prices to be competitive for resale merchandise (online and in person). Some items are great finds but you must go frequently to find some of these. It's also a great place to replace a broken lid, or pick up decor for a themed party, craft materials, kitchen gadgets, and of course clothing. Have fun! It's a treasure hunt! read more

First Volunteers are very sweet & friendly . The prices are ridiculously high & I've been thrifting all my life. For example Art and frames so high I'm not sure what the goal is ? To keep it ? It's DONATED! Move it ! I do donate here and stop by and find things about every 5th time ! It's the only thrift store in town & I do believe they donate proceeds locally so that's a positive . Castaways started out many years ago as a small, friendly thrift store and the prices were very reasonable. That is not the case anymore. They don't allow you to bring in your handbag, which is VERY inconvenient. The prices are ridiculous for what is in there and it no longer has the friendly atmosphere that I remember. It reminded me of your typical overpriced Goodwill. It is not what it used to be and I won't be returning. Sad! read more

Been several times. Its clean with a nice variety. Its great to raise money for the Churches however there are some issues.... 1) They're all volunteers so let me tell you if you're not at the cash register well before closing....they're locking down a half hour before closing. Crotchety old man just sitting behind the counter was rude to us and ordering us to" move along! so others can check out!" when I kindly asked the sales lady for a receipt please. 2)No, u cannot have receipt. No. They can write you a piece of paper saying how much you spent but if you'd like an itemized receipt you cannot have one... Kind of problematic for you when you count up everything you bought and it comes out to around $50 and they ask you for $72 and you need to produce a receipt for work to what you got! lol I didn't say anything!! She said well the prices are on all the items you can figure it out. I guess its charity huh? You need to watch them ring up each item I guess. read more

The worst! It starts with being told that you can't bring any purses in, not even ordinary sized bags. They treat you like a thief before you walk in. I pointed out that it sure tells the car thieves where to go, but they don't care. They yelled at another woman even though she showed she could fold her bag to fit in the box, but they kicked her out anyway. The prices aren't that good, and who needs to be yelled at? Do not waste you time shopping here. This place is very SELECTIVE with who they choose to let in their store. They have a sign that says no purses, yet this sign apparently only applies to certain people and not others. We were not allowed into the store by the man in the picture who was rude and and came outside to stop us. He also physically grabbed my mothers purse from her shoulder so he could compare it to his stupid basket. Even though they were the same size since it didn't "fit inside" the basket, which is impossible even for most smaller purses to begin with, he made my mom go put her purse in the car. Then as we were going to re-enter the shop without purses another woman walked by with a bag twice the size and went into the store without issue. We decided to confront the supervisor on duty as to why the woman went in and we couldn't, and he stated that it was impossible to enforce their own rules and admitted that they have difficulty applying the same principle to everyone. How in the world is it right to pick and choose who you want to enforce rules on and who you don't? I understand that they have certain restrictions but that should apply to EVERYONE, not just who they feel like it. The supervisor didn't even bother apologizing for their ridiculous standards and admitted that he saw the woman with the larger purse in the store but there was nothing he would do. DOUBLE STANDARDS BY FAR! My family, friends, and I will NEVER come to this place again and I recommend anyone who believes in civil responsibility and values should not buy anything from a store with such limited views. read more

Heeded the advice in previous reviews and left my purse in the car. And, yes, there is a rather small red plastic container which dictates what size purse is allowed. The place is clean and well-lit. Clothes aren't jammed on the racks. The selection isn't gargantuan but it's decent. Nice selection of clean shoes from well-known brands. The prices are pretty good and I only noted one outlier -- a pair of Ferragamo pumps for $20. Decent jewelry selection. At least 3 people manning the checkout area so I didn't have to wait long to pay. Lots of parking in front of the store read more

To anyone that doesn't understand the reasoning behind ANY stores that prohibits large purses or bags 'policies' need to look at the real world and the problems that other cause in it. Charitable organizations depend on businesses like Castaways and they are trying their best to pass the help along, but if people keep stealing items they can't very well do that. FYI - most ALL stores are changing their policies to prohibit large bags in their stores - GET USE TO IT! read more

Castaways does great things for the local community, is staffed by volunteers and is clean with ample parking. These people leaving bad reviews are just salty because you can not bring a large purse because the local trash is shoplifting. The policy is not a big deal, and y'all need to relax, leave your purse in the car and go find some great deals all the while giving back to the community. read more

We go in almost every trip to Rockport. I've never had a problem with the place. Only 2 dressing rooms available if you need to try on clothes. Items are cheap enough. I've bought new looking jeans for $4 or $5. I saw the new sign out front about no large bags/purses, so I left mine in the car as my husband had his wallet. No one tried to stop me for anything. We do like the way the clothes are hung out by sizes making it easier to shop. Yes, the check out line is usually long & slow, so don't plan on a quick in-out shopping experience. read more

I've been going to Castaways over 12 years even when it was at the old store. Things have really changed. I'm sorry that shoplifting has caused us to leave our purses. I understand the security but charging me 20 dollars more that I bought is NOT charity, but theft. I was too embarrassed to tell the cashier that that she had overcharged me since it IS supposed to be a charity. Considering the fact that all the items for sale are donated, cost them nothing, and the staff are all volunteers that do not get paid, their prices are high and now they are going to overcharge us, I am very disappointed with Castaways.. read more

I've visited Castaways many times since moving to the area. We moved here right after Harvey. Castaways has changed a lot since then. The tiny purse rule wasn't always in effect. If they are being stolen from at that rate that such drastic measure are being taken, maybe a volunteer could act as a security guard. I realize the staff is made up of volunteers, but maybe some would be better served in service away from customers. It's rare that I find a friendly person to ask questions to...except for the people taking in donations at the side of the building. I don't think there is a consistent volunteer 'pricer'. Some things I have found have been great deals. Some things I have looked at were ridiculously overpriced. I recommend giving them a chance as what they are doing, running a thrift-shop is a greatly appreciated job. Hopefully some of the more negative things can be solved by them to make people feel like they are welcome in an environment where everyone isn't assumed a thief upon entrance. read more
