The main building was empty except for a couple of employees selling tickets. I thought it could definitely use a refresh but we were not there for the lodge. We rode up 2 lifts to reach the top of Whitefish Mountain. There are two peaks you can take lifts up and we went to the higher peak for one if the longer hikes. Both lifts were easy to get on, getting off was a little sketchy as we had to quickly jump off and move several steps forward to avoid being hit by the lift. Thank goodness for the lift operator assisting people off the lift! I'm sure it's much easier to exit when skiing. The ride up was great. Such beautiful views! There is a small bar/restaurant at the top with amazing patio views and a restroom. We hiked down the Danny On Trail From the top. There are plenty of trail Markers so you cannot get lost. We did see a sign warning us of bear activity while hiking but we never actually saw any animal activity, not even a deer. A majority of the trail had beautiful views of Whitefish Lake. The lower part of the hiking trail was covered with dozens of people picking huckleberries so you just had to navigate around those groups. The hike took approximately 3 hours to reach the Alpine Slide area. You could ride the slide down or jump on the ski lift to go down. Whichever you purchased tickets to do. There are is also a separate trail for mountain bikers but we didn't cross those trails until closer to the Alpine slide area. We purchased tickets for the Alpine Slide so we jumped in line which went quickly. There are two slides to choose from. One slide is "fast" and the other is slower and more scenic. We chose the scenic as it was our first time on the slide. You can also choose the speed as you navigate down the slide. The slide drops you right off at the bottom of the resort so you can walk directly to the parking lot. I would definitely recommend the hiking and Alpine slide. It was very scenic and a wonderful experience.

We had a little bit of trouble finding it based on Google Maps, but if you're heading up the main ski resort hill road, you'll hit a fork in the road with the small grocery/alcohol store in front of you. Go left. Turn into parking lot #2 and the Slopeside Lodge is the end. The first two rows are reserved for hotel guests and they will give you a dashboard pass when you check in. I got the impression that they only have rooms with two double beds, no single queens or kings. You can totally fit two people on each bed, but it was definitely more comfortable since we each got our own bed to ourselves. Beds come with two different-softness pillows and the mattresses are on the hard side, which I prefer. There is a dresser as well as an open closet area to hang up clothes. Rooms are relatively sound-proof, but I don't think the hotel was a full capacity when we stayed there. I know there were people in the room next to us, but we never heard them or even heard their door open/close. The lodge has a really nice and cozy family room-style lounge on the main (second) floor, with a tv and lots of books, as well as an open air lounge area on the third floor. There are two small hot tubs on the ground floor that can quickly get filled up as the capacity of each is 5 people. Note that there is no restaurant on-site, so they are not licensed for alcohol consumption in these public areas. There is a vending machine on the first floor near the exit. The lodge is ski-in, but not ski out, as you will need to hike up a bit to get to any of the lifts. There are ski equipment lockers for each individual room. All staff members were really nice and accommodating, including rummaging around for glasses (vs the plastic cups available in the room) so that we could drink our wine (they found one tumbler, and one wine-like glass, and gave us a little rag with dish soap squirted on it). Overall, we really enjoyed out stay. It was no frills but it was clean and had what we needed.

When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised it is definitely not a 2 star but in my opinion a definite 3 star hotel. As the last review stated it is ski in but a very short hump up to the lifts. Has 2 hot tubs that we never ran into any other people at, the hot tub areas also had 2 bathroom/showers in the area and towels. The hotel is older but well maintained & decent appearance, large rooms with 2 queen beds, large closet, 6 large hooks along the entrance wall, good sized bathroom with shower/bath combo, coin operated washer/dryers, refrigerator, microwave, coffee pots supplied with caffeinated and decaf coffee, large dresser and daily housekeeping. Also had a great view. It's about a 10 min drive to downtown Fernie with several great restaurants. This place is a gem! Would definitely stay here again. Only wish the weather prediction was a lot more accurate as it kept saying sunshine and we skied in a cloud with horrid visibility for most of the time.

We actually traveled for over 2 months this summer, and this was by far our favorite stop. Within 10 minutes of arriving, we extended our stay for another week. Just beautiful and peaceful and relaxing on the lake with so much to do. And the owners were friendly and gracious. The whole property is so well kept, and the cabin itself had all the amenities you could need. Lots of special, unexpected touches - like ingredients for making s'mores at the nightly campfire. One night, they put up a big screen and played a kid-friendly movie. Also, wifi was great everywhere on the property. Plenty to do nearby - hiking trails, Whitefish, Glacier National Park (of course). We picked huckleberries! Can't wait to go back!

There is no air conditioning in the other bedroom or main area. Even with the ceiling fan in high and windows open the unit is hot in the summer. The other bedroom has no fan. Our family rented two condo/hotel rooms at the Timberline Lodge in the Balsam building, rooms 540 and 545. The rooms were very spacious and each of the two bedrooms and loft room had their own bathroom (1/2 bath in the loft), which was great because everyone had their own space. Every room, except the loft, had a TV, which was very nice too. Wifi was provided for free and the connection was superb. There was a coffee pot, slow cooker, toaster and electric kettle provided along with a fair selection of pots, pans and a couple of bowls and 1 casserole dish. The only "food" provided was 2 packages of coffee, some tea and packages of salt, pepper, sugar and sweetener. That's it. I would have wished and will recommend the hotel to offer more condiments available such as ketchup, mustard, mayo, peanut butter, jams, etc. You essentially have to bring or buy EVERYTHING for your food which is a rather big expense and inconvenience. No spices to cook with or anything, I understand perhaps this is a food safety regulation, but single serving/portion packets could easily solve this problem. I also found it odd that we were required to empty our own garbage upon check out and that they charged me $13.50 per night for a play pen and did not provide a sheet, I'm thankful I brought my own from home, just in case. There is also a condition that if they "take longer to clean your room than normal" they will charge you extra. I'm not sure exactly what this means, but I will be watching the credit card to see if they charge us extra, as the place was very tidy but I ran a small load of dishes through the dishwasher as we left. The room was quiet, we did not hear our neighbours at all, but it was very noisy if kids were running down the hallway, especially the hallway below us, for some reason. All in all, the location was wonderful, the hotel room was perfect for our family of 5 and the shuttle was very convenient to use to the hill. Jenn was wonderful and very responsive to deal with pre-booking.
