After having experienced two grandparents in the general retirement area, and one of those grandparents later in memory care, I can say with confidence that the family chose well with Morning Star. Yes. There are always difficulties in communication, insurance, billing, and everything else that you might expect from dealing with any sort of business entity at all. This simply comes with the territory. But what makes me happy with how my grandparents lived out their time at Morning Star is the respect, dignity, and help that they got from a great staff. If my grandfather was feeling ill, the staff would bring soup to his room. If he needed help with medicine, there were services to assist in managing his pills. Finally when he died, the staff was helpful to the family in planning for my grandmother. In memory care, my grandmother was taken to every meal, she was brought to the daily activity session, and was never just left in her room to fade away. Her defiance was met with patience, and the staff always let us know about anything she might need (socks, pants, etc.) The last few years of someone's life is an uncomfortable topic. Death is an uncomfortable topic. But I'm so happy that Morning Star made my grandparents last days more bearable. They have a very high ratio of staff to residents, much higher than anywhere else within 30 miles of Castle Rock. The staff truly take an interest in the people under their care. The staff learn about the residents, providing activities that interest them and keep them engaged. They understand how scared and abandoned someone can feel beginning this part of the journey, and they work very hard to help a new person become part of a community of support. I can't thank them enough. The house feels like a house, not a facility, in a pretty neighborhood that is great for taking walks. My dad passed away last year, and my mom now resides in Memory Care. Overall, they have been part of the Terra Bluffs community for about 2 1/2 years. Management: The management team is attentive, responsive, and very easy to work with. Any questions or needs we've had have been handled quickly and professionally, which gives our family great peace of mind. Caregivers: This is where Terra Bluffs truly shines. The caregivers are compassionate, engaged, and genuinely care about the residents. There appears to be very little turnover, which speaks volumes. They provided excellent care for both of my parents in assisted living and continue to take wonderful care of my mom in Memory Care. A family member who works with many assisted living and memory care communities in South Carolina visited recently and was especially impressed--not just with the facility, but with the genuine connection and attentiveness of the caregivers. Dining: The dining room is beautiful, and the food is well-prepared with a weekly menu and à la carte options. I've dined there myself and have always been pleased with the quality. Family can dine anytime there with the residents for a charge. Also chef usually prepares a special meal during holidays and special occasions. Activities: There is a wide variety of activities that keep residents engaged, including offsite outings, which adds to the overall experience. Just attended a ventriloquist show and thoroughly enjoyed it. Maintenance: they are on top of keeping the facility maintained and requests are quickly taken care of. Apartments: The apartments are spacious and well-designed, ranging from studios to two-bedroom units. My parents lived in a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment, and it was both comfortable and roomy.Washer/dryer combo in each room. Overall, I am very grateful for the care and support Terra Bluffs has provided to our family. It's a beautiful community with a truly caring staff. We have 2 children at the facility that are suffering from a terrible neurological disease. They will never recover, and Rowan Community is their home. The staff treat them as such and take care of them like they are their own. You can't put a price tag or a star rating on that. If something were to happen to my wife or myself, we know that they would be taking care of. With that said, it is an older building and has a lot of the issues that come with an older building. They unfortunately are dealing with staff shortages much like every other business these days, but they are doing the best they can. Everyone pitches in to help. It is all hands-on deck when it comes to meal service, and they do the best they can. We are very involved with the care of our kids and you will find my wife there at least 3 times a week. Unfortunately, several of the residents have been forgotten by their family members and they expect the staff to just "handle" their needs. If you are looking for a state-of-the-art facility, Rowan probably isn't that. If you are looking for people who care, Rowan is the place.

My father was brought to Rowan after a back surgery for rehab, because it was affiliated with the VA. They seemed to be highly rated but this is the biggest nightmare of a care facility I've ever experienced in my life. This is the hell you send your loved ones to when they are dying! Before I even got there, my dad was texting us non-stop to come save him. He did not get breakfast because his dinner the night before was practically inedible. He begged us to bring him outside food. Upon walking in you are immediately hit with a smell of a mixture of morgue and mold-riddled cafe. Then you see the paint, decor, and bedding is all from the 1970s and 1980s. The beds spring boards and the mattresses are foam, not memory foam, regular camping mat foam. The beds at the hospital were more comfortable. The staff seemed mostly nice, but the Director of Nursing seemed to find us audacious for saying that the beds were not adequate. Dad was complaining of pain three times more in these beds than he did at the hospital before his surgery. I asked her how old the beds were, and she answered with "They are perfectly functional! What's wrong with them?!" That's not what I asked. The more I sat with my dad, the more triggered I got by the sounds and smells. It sounds like an insane asylum. Doors being slammed every 30 seconds, equipment knocking and slamming, staff yelling at each other across the halls, patients melting down, etc. There is no AC in the individual rooms. The PT center can only handle one patient at a time, and with as many patients as they had, I'm not sure how often they could have gotten around to my dad's care. As I walked to different places in the facility I was hit with what smells like feces and rotten menstrual pads. Then I had to get on the floor because my dad dropped his hearing aid battery and the floor was sticky. There were no chairs for visitors or patients to sit on. We sat on the unoccupied bed in the room and our backs started hurting as well.

They even let us borrow a cell phone for several weeks so that we could set up her Dexcom so the nurses and our family could monitor her blood sugar. They welcomed my Dad every night for dinner for months before he became a resident himself. The staff host amazing events with great food, cocktails, and mocktails. They have movies every night in the theater room. The facility is beautiful and has on site PT, OT, and speech therapy which has been so good for my mom. The staff took such good care of my dad before he passed. It really made such a difference to my family. I feel lucky that my mom is here and confident that she is getting excellent care.
