I felt very comfortable with the level of care they provided during my visit. I would highly highly recommend anyone who has an exotic pet to never bring them to this location. To give you guys all a brief overview of everything that happened. My pet gecko had tissue coming out of her behind. We looked for any exotic vet around our location and unfortunately happen to stumble upon this vet. but we were told they had other appointments so they wouldn't be able to look at nixie(our pet gecko) till mid morning. We were there 40 minutes before they opened due to nervousness and in hopes if we were were there and able to explain the situation they would immediately start the process right then and there. however my wife had to call for an update since they hadn't reached out. We were told the doctor would call us with an estimate, an hour went by before they reached out about the procedure and estimate. Even though the doctors seemed careless and said to just euthanize her rather and gave us an option for surgery, we went the surgery way fast forward to about 3 o'clock he gave us a call saying how he went to go do the surgery however she had passed away. Not only am I heartbroken but I just wish I could've taken her somewhere else where this would've been taken as a serious issue rather than brushing it off and waiting for hours. In my opinion it was a wrongful death since it could've been prevented, if it wasn't I preventable we were never told or had anything communicated. The doctor had communicated he wasn't sure what the cause was he gave us multiple different options. If you live in the 5 cities be careful they care more about appointments rather than urgent care. I can't say enough good about Cat and Exotic Care. I wished I'd known about them on January 7th. That's when I took my Iguana to a vet recommended to me by another vet who no longer does Exotics. The recommendation was a joke. They had no idea about iguanas. A month later and almost $3000.00 in they say she's egg bound. This is what i said on January 7th.. To say I was ticked off is an understatement. I went home and just started calling everyone that said they do exotics. Also looking them up for reviews before hand. I came across Cat and Exotic Care in Pismo Beach,I live in Santa Barbara. Sooooo worth it. She was so egg bound because of that month with the vet they became calcified. She needed surgery and soon. I walk into the office they took her right in have her fluids and some other things and set her up for surgery. 90 eggs!!!!! And 4 stuck in her tubes ( forget what they're called. But she got through it like a champ. Today she finally got her stitches out. She's happy and healthy. The 3 visits with xrays, fluids, medications, surgery and after care, was half of what I paid for 4 visits starting January 7th to a place that was giving her animals saying she was impacted. If we were in south county we would 100% take our cat there! Couldn't have been happier with their service and care. My Holland lop bunny, Sandy went missing for 6 days. She was found by one of my neighbors grand daughter who didn't give up on catching her, bless her sweet little heart. When I picked up Sandy she had quite a bit of ticks on her from the fields up on the mesa. The veterinarian here at this facility was so helpful and got me in the same morning she was found. They preformed a physical examination. She is healthy and no major issues. They removed all the ticks and did booster vaccines. Also gave her some medication and ointment. My wife and I have been bringing our rabbit, Bunito, here since we moved to SLO County in 2023. Dr. Conn and his staff have treated Bunito for a variety of health issues, and we have always found them to be wonderful. Dr. Conn consistently demonstrates a level of knowledge, experience, and compassion that makes him one of the best veterinarians we have ever encountered. One of the issues Bunito suffered from was over-grooming, for example, and no other vet whom Bunito has ever seen (including a well-respected practice in the Bay Area) suggested looking deeper into the problem. Dr. Conn, however, suspected Bunito might be suffering from ear mites and treated him for them. Sure enough, his over-grooming disappeared practically overnight. Dr. Conn and his staff really helped us out when our puppy chewed on our baby sulcata tortoise. They fit us right in with an appt the same day and the office is clean and friendly. The cost to fix our poor tortoise was very reasonable and they even called to follow up a couple days later. I did not think it would make it at first but Dr Conn did an amazing job. As I put into the tip, they don't treat dogs here so that the felines and exotic animals are more at ease without the scent and presence of canines. It's conveniently located in the shopping center next to the Pismo Outlets so grab a latte at FourBucks (i mean, Starbucks), get an ice cream at Rite Aid, or go shopping at the outlet if you have a wait like I did for a procedure. Second time Dr Conn literally saved a bird of mine from death. First time my parakeet ( budgie) was attacked by my green cheek conure, saved birds life and not lasting damage ( AMAZING!) Second time today, yes i should have wrote sooner...One of my budgies got bit by our ringneck at bedtime, it was bad, blood everywhere, all places closed Conejo was the closest 24 er for avian. Came in this morning and low and behold he did surgery and did his best. Budgies have a hard time making it through anesthesia but Ocho did ( my bird) and at even, time will tell if another surgery will be needed but i can not express enough, how smart this doctor is kind, knew budgies pick at bandage and made extra tape on end of splint to differ her from picking at the actual leg. "Called, made appointment, told them I was coming and had to sit in my car for two hours. They got started on my bunny almost 30 minutes late. I purchased multiple medications that I never got to use or even take out of the bag, because my rabbit died shortly after our appointment. I did not unseal them, the vet did, and I just transported them in the bag. Showed up the next morning as soon as they opened and I tried to get a refund, but I could not return them. I also paid for X-rays and blood samples, which I mentioned to the girl at the office. I am still waiting for those results/updates. Have not heard from the business since. Not the best experience." - My review on Google from 5 months ago. Now, 5 months later: I still have not received the documents and tests that I paid for. While I sat in my car during the entirety of my visit, there is no way of knowing whether or not they even performed these tests, which I paid over $200 for and received no proof of being done in actuality. Please read through the Google reviews if you get a chance. The owner/Dr. is a very interesting businessman, as he really does have 0 sympathy whatsoever. Reading through his responses to other pet owners who have shared very similar experiences with me, he somehow has a pattern of ALWAYS making it the patient's fault, and if you share your honest experience, you're just "hurting his reputation," which I guess is all that really matters to him. Very interesting. I should also mention that I brought my dead rabbit in a box the next morning, and they wanted to charge me $100-200 for an autopsy. I refused because it was clearly a money grab, and to this day I have no idea how my rabbit died. A money-centered business, that's all I can say. They even had the audacity to mail me a sympathy card after this horrendous experience. I didn't even open it. Ripped it up and threw it in the trash. To the owner: I'm sorry that you "LOST A CHUNK OF YOUR EVENING FAMILY TIME"!!! I guess it's a good thing my rabbit died, you'll never have to deal with that inconvenience ever again. Maybe you should have seen me at my actual appointment time instead of making me wait 30 minutes into my appointment to be helped. Also, no, you weren't very clear in your prognosis which is why I chose to buy the meds. If you CERTAINLY knew that he was going to die, why didn't you say that? I brought my bird here because she had lost some weight. Dr. Conn didn't know what was wrong with her. He performed tests on the stool and nothing problematic showed up. He wanted to take her blood and perform an X-ray. When I asked what those tests would tell us, he became argumentative. He was extremely short with me, then left the room, and sent the tech in the room to finish the appointment. The tech informed me that Dr. Conn wanted to keep my bird overnight in the incubator. I so wanted my bird to get better, that I trusted this advice, and left my bird there. My bird was dead before the next morning. In hindsight I realize this was poor advice, as birds are extremely stressed in unfamiliar places, and she would have been much better off at home. The vet also prescribed two expensive medications, which I had to pay for. Final cost I paid was over $500. I had been to this vet a few times in the past, and the experience was never great. I had a sick baby tortoise and had been told about two local vets that deal with exotic pets. One was booked a few weeks out so I went with this one since they could fit me in the next day, which I was so thankful for. The office staff was nice, I dropped our little guy off and an hour later received a call from the vet. (By the way, I'm new to tortoises.) He asked me a few questions and then gave me all the reasons why the sick tortoise was my fault. I told him I had another tortoise from the same clutch and he was completely fine. He proceeded to tell me, he probably wasn't. He told me my options were to spend over $700 but it probably won't help because he is so bad off. Or spend $200 to humanely euthanize him. I was a mess because wanted to do the right thing. After calling a friend who had experience with tortoises, I decided to pick him up and do my best on my own to bring him back to health. I cooked a sweet potato, mashed it up, added some to warm water and let my tortoise soak in it a few times a day for nutrients and hydration. A few weeks later he was getting energy back and eating on his own again. So glad I didn't have him euthanized even though the vet said there was little hope because he was so far gone. Like I said, it was our first (and last) time at this clinic, so maybe he was having a bad day, but there was no sympathy at all. (I'll add too, I'm not new to animals, so I had done a lot of research before getting the tortoises.) I'm glad to say, the appointment was beginning of May and the tortoise is doing great. I basically paid an office visit to feel horrible, without any actual helpful vet advice. read more

Dr. Max Conn has been veterinarian to my cat for over 2 years. What can I say? I am fully satisfied with the services we have received. Nice, clean waiting room, exam rooms. Friendly, personable staff. Impressive boarding facilities. Flat screen with virtual aquarium. Three celled boarding rooms. Cats and exotics are served. Sorry, no dogs. But the cats like it better that way. I used to work in a vet clinic. Some cats are just mean when around dogs. Dr Max Conn is amazing, the most caring and sincere vet I have ever met. I've been going here for 12 years now. Carla who has been there since I started with my 1st cat is fantastic as well. The whole staff, even though the rest has changed over the years, are always friendly and knowledgeable - he knows how to pick them. My cats have always felt safe with it being a cat and exotic care facility only - no dogs to freak them out. I even recently starting boarding my current cat when I'm out of town because of how comfortable she is in that environment. I took my hamster in after he had gotten out of his cage and showed back up with a scrape on his hip. The veterinarian gave him a two-week batch of antibiotics which he took like a champ. Unfortunately he died a few days after the treatment from wet tail, which is a possible side effect of hammies taking antibiotics I was unaware of. They're also apparently the only cure for it as well. If I had been told of the potential negatives that could show up after the antibiotic course I might've just cleaned the cut myself and avoided the antibiotic complications, since he was already in a fragile and stressed state. I only learned that antibiotics in hamsters can cause havoc in their gut after he passed, so I hope anyone else thinking of bringing their hammie here either doesn't or does a lot of research beforehand. read more

Great/friendly service from the young ladies up front. However, when the doctor took our gecko out to "remove stuck shed" he ended up amputating part of her finger and peeling the actual skin off of her fingers without consulting us. A very rude technician then pressured us to pay another $60 in addition to the amount we agreed upon at the beginning for treatment of the wound they caused. We had recently rescued the gecko and were treating her from the neglect of her previous owners, yet the doctor was very condescending of our own husbandry, which was unnecessary unpleasantness. read more

I can vouch for his surgical skills (on parakeets!), knowledge on cockatiels and parakeets and his honesty when, sadly, a birds quality of life is not what it should be.... But holy hell the cost was so much for a hamster. I looked it up and basically it should've costed about 2$ to put her down but they charged me 100$ for a small rodent. Took my daughters bearded dragon to see him. He was a rescue we were his 4th home. He ended up being my daughters (undocumented) emotional support pet. She suffers from a rare illness. We took him there, because cat and exotics were the only vet in this area that works with exotics. Our Dragon had what seemed to be a upper respiratory infection. When he examined him he was super rough, and very upsetting for my daughter to watch. He said he didn't really know what was wrong, other than he had tooth decay. He gave him an injectable antibiotic. The antibiotic wasn't working, and his eyes were still yucky so I called for eye drops, he filled it, but they weren't helping and his URI was getting worse. I took him back in, he examined him and literally sat back in his chair and said he did t know what was wrong.....the next day I requested another antibiotics as well. He filled it, then he died the following morning. They had me bring him in to check for a heartbeat. And they wanted to keep him, to see what was wrong....I said no, they should have figured that out while he was alive, I took him home for his mommy to tell him bye. Staff was very nice.. read more

They currently see about 4 other ferrets there, so you know that you're getting someone with experience. Other vets I've been to rarely see ferrets.
